Really helpful to distinguish btw "transactional" and "advisory" types of work :) never knew corporate lawyers could be further distinguished like this too! Also I trained at a small firm very recently, partner couldnt care much, too overloaded with work. Associates were the same. So the probs you highlighted are not only prevalent in big firms but small firms too. Some small-firm partners probably also lack the ability and knowledge of best (ethical) practices to appropriately guide trainees.

oh i see! that makes sense, so i guess the partner: trainee ratio doesnt necessarily apply then even if there are is a good ratio in smaller firms there may not be adequate training. thanks for adding this here!! i think it’s helpful for other future trainees to know that be it small or big firms, they should take note of the quality of training partners give :)

hey! thank you for the insightful video. I was wondering if you think retention is an important consideration? and your thoughts on it? :)

hello and thnku i’m glad u found it helpful! for me, while it is preferable that your firm trains to retain, i think it’s not as impt a factor. with proper mentorship and experience working in top form for that practice area, i think even if you don’t get retained (due to budget/capacity reasons wtv), i’d imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult looking for another firm as you have the skills they are looking for! essentially i have some faith that if you are competent and show commitment to learn, there won’t be a shortage of firms willing to take you in! just my two cents HAHA
