Can the dream of world peace can be achieved through education? 18 years ago Modesto City Schools began teaching the nation's first and only world religions course required for graduation in a revolutionary effort to make that happen on a local level. Sherry McIntyre has been teaching Modesto's World Religions course to the freshmen of Johansen High School since it's debut in 2000. She also teaches in the teacher credential program at Brandman University. A resident of Modesto for 20 years, Sherry is mother to six children ages 32-12 and is married to her high school sweetheart. Way to go, Modesto. All school districts should emulate yours. You were right on target when you said that kids will live in a diverse world, a world where their neighbors and friends are different. And knowledge is the first step toward peace. I too have hated the word "tolerance". I like your suggestion of moving from TOLERATE to RESPECT to CELEBRATE...the differences of everyone we meet. Great job!
