Zebra plant was my ‘gateway’ plant to my current succulent addiction! 😝
Succulent Addiction? Join S.A.? It's a 12 step program? Ummm no, I don't know what what you're talking about😜
I did not know about the stripes telling the two plants apart, thank you for sharing!
I bought one of these 5 years ago at an Ikea and to this day it has grown so many pups that I now have 12 of them, including the two that started in the original pot.
You probably dont give a damn but does any of you know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Julian Brayan instablaster ;)
@Shepard Lucian i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Shepard Lucian it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
@Julian Brayan you are welcome :)
I’m so glad you talked about the crispy tips on the leaves. I recently ordered one online and when it came it had crispy tips but I wasn’t sure what that meant. I’ve been watering it properly, but I’m glad to hear that it’s normal!
I have a zebra plant right now, It's the first one I owned because I wanted something that needed less light. Her name is Gloria because she's glorious! I love her so much
I've had a haworthia attenuata for about 2 months now. Got it at a local plant store here in AZ. Repotted it the day I got it. It's required very little care...I've only wattered it twice. And it's grown nearly twice the size from day one. It's also deepened to a beautiful green from a lighter green/red...this video of yours helped me understand why that's a good thing! I find your videos to be so valuable. Thank you!
I used to have a zebra plant when i was little, i was so fascinated with it when i saw it, like 6 months later it died i never found out why but I think i over watered it because i remember the leaves becoming yellow, weak, and floppy, but that plant was one of the first succulents i had ever owned, and now I'm in love with them and have my collection. I enjoy going outside and watching them grow along with the tiny succulents that sprout from my propagation leaves. I hope I win the succulent tool kit!!! or one of the larger prizes, i'm especially hoping to win that mountain crest garden gift card to expand my collection!!
Mine that I bought nearly 10 years ago is massive now
Hi...very interesting...how do you care for it please
Really!!! How big is it? How do you care for it? Do you keep it inside?
I wanna see a pic 😍 I'm sure it's beautiful 😍
G cee It sits by the window inside and just chills there, watered every so often. It’s sprung up some other zebra plants right next to it too! I honestly knew nothing about succulents when I bought it and still don’t know much, just got lucky I guess! It’s beautiful though an I love it very much 😂
@@ZayAgka so how often do you water it?because I want mine to grow fast😬
I actually kept all of mine outside all summer and spring last year, and all 4 of my Haworthias grew stalks and then flowers eventually. They seemed to thrive like crazy in the sun
That's awesome!
This is a great video for people that are just getting an interest in succulents. I believe this would be the 1st plant I would recommend to a newbie too. You did a great job of providing, not only all of the information one would need to keep haworthia fasciata happy, but also the basics for most other succs, as well!
I have mine growing outside. I rescued it from home depot. Some of the leaves were dry, but i repotted it and gave it a nice drink. After about 2 weeks I saw that it produced a pup. Its now back to having dark green leaves and it looks a lot healthier :)
My neighbor had one Zebra plant and a string of pearls by her door... I watched them slowly die. Then my neighbor left the apartment and left the zebra plant. So I adopted it! Now it is a happy zebra plant!
Glad to hear there is a happy end to the story :)
This a really clear and helpful. I'm not only new to succulents, I'm new to plans in general. I bought a zebra like this last year and set it outside this summer, thinking it would love a little sun. Fortunately I didn't kill it -- brought it inside because a few leaves looked sunburned -- had no idea until I saw this video that it prefers bright shade. Also, the most frustrating thing to me about learning about succulents is that most sites don't say if their watering guidelines are for indoors or outdoors, are give you a sense of the climate they're growing these things in. Big difference between s.w. U.S. and mid-Wisconsin where I am! You did note these things, so now I feel competent to carry on., Thanks!
Very true about the watering. That's why I stress the soak and dry method so much. There is no universal watering schedule that works for everyone. Indoor, outdoor, humid climate, dry climate, all have a huge impact on how often succulents need water.

I’ll have to add the Zebra Plant to my wishlist of succulents! Thanks for the info!!
Love the videos with all of the extra info on individual succulents. Interesting info that Haworthia fasciata is striped on the outside. Also, love knowing that it grows best indoors. Am looking forward to all of your videos. Thanks so much!
Wow love the specific plant details love it. Are you going to upload all the specific vedio on all plant which you potted in previous vedio

Love Haworthias! Thank you for the info. I didn't know the difference between fasciata and attenuata. Close ups of the plants would be helpful while you are showing them.
For my birthday this year my brother got me a 3 month succulent of the month subscription. This was one of the first ones that I received. I am new to succulents so these videos are great for me to learn how to care for them!
Haworthia was my first! Now I'm addicted to succulents. Have about 40!
I love all of your videos and can't wait for the next one!! ☺️ I'm a beginner and your videos have helped me so much!!
Katie Denniston I’m so glad I found her. I’ve always loved succulents but always afraid of killing them.
I've grown an attenuata (alongside my other 'basic' succulents) and sadly it died due to overwatering. The other succulents are exposed to direct sunlight, and I think that's the reason why their soil is drying faster, and watering those succulents once a week seems fine. I also watered my attenuata once a week and since I'm growing it indoors, I didn't notice that the soil is not drying up before I water it, so soon after it died because of root rot. I recently purchased another attenuata plant, hopefully I can take better care of it this time.
Hopefully this video helped 🙂 This post also has some care information that may be useful for you:

I started my zebra plant growing indoors. Now I have it outside for the summer, and since I knew that it was summer dormant, I haven't been watering much at all. The information about the crispy yellow or brown leaves and the browning tips showing underwatering was very helpful. I will need to give it more water. I live in Eastern WA state and it has been very hot here lately, but we have very low humidity. Thanks, Cassidy!
I have a lot of experience with various varieties of Haworthia, each with a slightly (or sometimes not so slightly) different appearance. Like most succulent collectors, I'm always on the hunt for new types. Some are striped, some dotted, some variegated, some semi-translucent - very cool! I live in FL, so I definitely keep my Haworthias indoors or in a shaded portion of my lanai. I love that they have structural integrity and good looks sufficient to feature as a solo specimen, and are equally great as accents grouped in a potted arrangement. I still sometimes confuse Haworthia with smaller aloes, although recently learned that Aloes have teeth along the leaves, whereas Haworthias leaves are smooth. Not sure if that's a foolproof means to make the distinction though.
Oooh, that's a good tip! I feel like I can usually tell them apart but can't verbalize why it's one over the other 😆 The teeth seems like a pretty good tell!
I simply love your videos and I am learning so much thanks to you !! I am a succulent fan making a living as an English teacher in Castilla la Mancha Spain. I do have a Haworthia at home and I know how resilient it can be. A beauty that can endure beginners´wrongdoing.
Thank you! This plant has encouraged me to grow more veggies! Im happy to know it grew me as i grew it. This video confirmed my theory i have 3 or 4 that need to leave the nest 😲😬🙄😁👍😍
This video is very helpful..I have a zebra I want to transplant and separate some babies. I kept it alive for a few months so I must be doing something right
This is my favorite plant, thank you for the info about direct sunlight. My Zebra is actually got sunburn so now it is in the shade.
We love the Zebra plants in our home. Our kids love succulents and Zebra plant is such a forgiving plant for them to care for in their rooms.
Loving the videos! I just got my first Zebra plant about a month ago and then discovered Mountain Crest Gardens, Needless to say I now have more succulents than my apartment can handle. I do believe the Zebra plant is my favorite so far. I'm looking forward to learning more from your videos. I did not do well with cuttings I purchased from another place so hopefully I can learn and have a new hobby I love.
I received a planter with no drainage holes with three of these. I kept them indoors on a west facing window and I just recently removed seven chicks from it. I adore this as an indoor plant.
Thanks! I’ve loved your videos for quite a while now.
I’m going to water my haworthia fasciata by soaking as I’ve killed several & this was my last time to buy.
I have been trying to create a plant nursery for years. I love plants the greenery in the life I have struggled with keeping it alive. I also grew up with a mother with a brown and black thumb which i am sure contributed to my misfortune at keeping plants alive. I recently bought “Spidey” my baby zebra succulent plant and I am determined to nurture my baby to maturation and propagation. Shortly after getting Spidey my parents gave me their Alo vera’s grandchild I named Vera due to a cat mishap they had to quickly be added to the same pot. Which meant I had to quickly learn how to transplant my baby to keep it well. I appreciate your website, resources and RUclips videos as they will help me do so. I hope to use the tools I learned through my research and most importantly from you and your resources to later show you Spidey as a mother with beautiful children and grandchildren. If nothing else as I learned I will be posting propagation videos next spring.
Thank you for sharing, look forward to Spidey's journey 😊
You make such informative videos. Thank you. I love my indoor haworthias. I may move one outside to see if it it will grow larger!
Great video! I love Hawarthia succulents! Thank you so much for sharing!!💖
This is one of my all time favorites. I have been growing it outside for a few years and am now trying it out indoors. :)
Enjoyed the video and had to take a look at the plant my daughter gave me....yes, it's a zebra olant!
My zebra was the first succulent and I’ve since gotten several more. I like how easy they are to take care of.
Me too
Hi Cassidy. I have a couple Haworthias I bought from a big box store in the summer. They closed up in about a few weeks and have been closed since June. Will the leaves open back up and spread out? Any way to encourage that? Thanks!
A tight rosette on your "Zebra Plant" isn't bad. It's a sign it's getting plenty of light and water.
Great video! Just started getting into more succulent varieties and I have one of these. So far it’s been my easiest succulent to take care of. :) Thanks for the care info!
I got one of these at the beginning of July and it’s not doing anything! I think it’s dormant 🤔
Me and my zebra plant have been through so much together. I've delt with over and underwatering for years. We are finally on the right track together, but I wish I had seen this video sooner! Thanks for all the good info!
Hi! Great video, I have grown many Haworthia and they do very well for me. In my house in NY, I grow these inside on a south window. I tend to underwater and that works for most of these. However, my underwatering has caused a few to be stunted. Now I know what to look for as you explained in this video, thank you so much!
Would you say this information would apply to most haworthia
Yes it does 🙂
@@Succulentsandsunshine OK thank you so much!
My zebra plant rotted from the middle.
So when i cane back from school and saw it leaning sideways, i touch it and it literally everything fell apart.
Rip.
Oh no! Hopefully this helps for the future
Now I know why the base of my Haworthia is turning red.
How i wish that you do close-up of the succulents you are talking about. They are too far away to see clearly☺️
Thank you for the feedback! We were trying to keep these simple to produce so we could do a lot this month. However, not including close ups was definitely an oversight.
And one we'll remedy in our next round of videos.
I have one of these plants! ;) Its great to learn more about it. Thank you!
Fantastic video! Wonderful tips too. Thanks for sharing! 🌞
My plant was over “loved” 😢 it has also fallen apart and the leaves have all detached due to it being soggy. Am I able to propagate individual leaves? Or rescue it any way?
Mine too.. It broke from the centre😢 if u get to know please tell me as well
Mine too. Now dead
Mine just fell apart today. So sad ☹️
I was given a air plant I don't know what it's called off the top of my head but it looks like grass that grows in a little glass bulb you get them at the grocery store in the flower area and it was really hard to take care of because you're supposed to water them and then hang them upside down but it was glued to the container with plant safe glue soap I couldn't really do that very well and it died but the Zebra Haworthia that I got with it from a friend last year in 2021 is still doing good it hasn't produced any flowers because I was keeping it inside by a window that gets more indirect light not very bright mostly shaded and I could never open the window but I have a nice apartment that is getting a decent light at the back so I crack the window at all times and leave it on the window sill and I water it only when it needs to every couple weeks sometimes every few days just depends on how much water sometimes I give it a couple tablespoons it just kind of depends it doesn't need much but the pot that it's in is I want to say 6" diameter so it's getting a good amount of space and it produces a couple pups but I haven't taken the pups off to give my dad but he wants some but I might just start him off with a fresh plant because I don't know if I've ruined it forever producing flowers although it was told to me that it would be just fine if it never produces flowers but I'm hoping that the conditions are better now I live in Kansas City Missouri so I try to keep it where it's not getting too cold or too hot but I'm hoping that it didn't ruin the plant forever producing flowers in the future even its last apartment and therefore I'm just going to get my dad a new plant to start fresh for him but do you think that I still have a potential to produce flowers in the future or will it just not produce flowers at this point it's fine if it doesn't it's still beautiful and adorable like it is and it inspired my dad to get one because he just likes how adorable it is he said he loves how adorable it is and would like one and I was like well here's all that I know about it and I showed him a picture of one with flowers and he was like oh my gosh now I even more want one so I think I'm going to get him one that he can start fresh that I know it's probably going to produce flowers unlike mine which I don't know if it will ever produce flowers now cuz I didn't give it the best conditions from the get-go but I am now so I I'm kind of curious what you think mine just look like the ones you have in the video which are nice and medium green no flowers in a 6-in pot and live in the life. Now I heard that depending on the watering and the type of sunlight that it could get as dark as purple and that it would be just fine that the color range kind of depends on it's conditions but that that's totally normal. What is your thought on that? Cuz in my last apartment when I wasn't giving it the best sunlight mostly indirect and mostly shaded and never opening the window it was more of a lime green and now it's more of a medium green like the ones in your video and I've heard that it can get as deep as purple which is totally normal out here so I'm just curious if you have any information on my questions and sorry for the many questions.
The color of a "Zebra Plant" can vary depending on the light and care it's receiving. You can get in-depth information on how to care for your "Zebra Plant" in this post:

I just bought one of these two days ago, so great timing on how to care for it.
All the leaves on my zebra plant are growing straight up and in, making it look sort of “closed.” Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?
It is fairly normal for the leaves to grow up and in. The direction that they grow is based on the amount of light they are getting. You can learn more about the zebra plant here:
www.succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-zebra
This was my first succulent. I love this little guy!
Hello and thank you for posting this video. I have a couple of these I bought from Home Depot. The leaves were wide and spread out much like the ones shown in the video however now they have closed up pretty tight. Any thoughts as to what causes this and what I can do to help the plant open up again? Thank you
That can happen from getting exposed to more light or heat than they're used to.
My friend gave me a tinny zebra plant! He's in a pot that looks like a sneaker and he lives on the windowsill in my bathroom and he's doing great!! I didn't know you can propagate these, I can't wait for it to start growing chics so I can have MORE zebra plants!!!
Allison Jarvis I love zebra plant succulents! I bought mine a couple weeks ago and I love it so much!!
I have had one of these on my kitchen windowsill for over a year. A friend gave it to me. Now it’s starting to look like it needs some care and propagation, so I’m watching this video to find out how to do it. I’m not usually a plant mom, but I’m grateful that people like you give such good and thorough instruction. I’m confident I’m going to have a few more of these in the near future because this one definitely needs to empty out its nest. Thank you so much for your tutelage.
I just bought one and this was so helpful. I was about to leave it in the sun all day but now I'm going to make sure it stays in my window. And thank you for the explanation about how the leaves tell me what it needs.
I bought my first one a few weeks ago and it is very small. I'm looking forward to watching it grow.
I live in a zone 8 climate and I’ve seen this plant planted in outdoor basket and left out all year round and its thriving
One of the first succulents I bought when I started 8 months ago and yet I got the practical tips from you now. Just a suggestion to have more close ups in your video as you're filming tiny cute little things often. Thanks for the tips !!!
Thanks for the feedback :)
This was my very very first one a couple of years ago! She did so well up until I actually took an interest in succulents and took apart her planter because I realized she was stuck in a drain less pot full of sphagnum. Aaaand then she rotted and died suddenly.
It's funny cause you're walking us through this and basically narrating all the reasons mine died. Haha!
Just bought one yesterday for a very low light indoor area. Hope it works. Is it possible to zoom in on the plant more in the video?
You can see closer up shots of it here:
www.succulentsandsunshine.com/types-of-succulents/haworthia-fasciata-zebra-plant/?.com&
I probably learned more in these few minutes than I did my entire life about my wonderful little plant. Thank you for the watering explanation :)
I have had a large plant in the house for several years . I am in England . It has had many side growths (pups) I have cut them off and many had roots but wht I planted them out they have gone yellow to white on the bottom of the leaves and the smaller ones have died .....What am I doing wrong? I planted in free draining compost and only watered once when I planted them ...PLEASE HELP
It’s the only succulent I haven’t killed!!!
Up here in Canada I grow these on indoor windowsills not facing south, and only bring them outdoors in summer. I water all my plants every 2-3 weeks using the soak and drain method. I don’t ignore them, it’s more like benign neglect.
I bought one zebra plant and then another that had two good size babies, now I have four plants. I love them so much. Great video.
The plant is beautiful, and so do you, thanks ! i love your hands.
I recently brought home my darling Zebra plant! I named him Spike. I absolutely love this succulent and I hope I can keep it alive for a long time. I might invest in some more plants, but right now, since I’m a beginner, this little one is my main focus!
Hello. I'm from the Philippines. My zebra (like an owl's claw) arrived a month ago. It took 16 days (inside the box) of shipping. After receiving it, I airdried it for 5hrs then potted. Three days ago, I noticed its leaves are getting brown. I asked some plant experts on how to save it. They say perform a water therapy for half day or 2 days, or a wk until you notice that there is a new root growing, then repot it. I followed the 2 day therapy but still no new roots but I just repotted it in a wet soil. Two days passed, still it is. Am I making it right?
I didn't know there were different types, I thought they were all simply Zebra Plants. I just learned something new. :)
My zebra plant has produced over 10 pups for me, however I'm having troubles in caring for them. I put them in soil after I removed them, and they seemed to be ok. Now, many of them have reddish tints to their leaves which I know is stress. Not sure what's stressing them out?? :/
I've inherited some haworthias on the property but thought they were fasciata. Your video taught me they're attenuatas! And they're pinkish so getting too much sun.
If the plant is small , do you still keep in shade ? What media to grow in and should I plant in bigger pot than it's in .
How much light the succulent needs will vary on its type. This post goes over the soil we recommend as well as this post on how to choose a pot for your succulent.

Mine had a surprise long antenna grow a while back and it has a flower on top ....unfortunately the flower hasn’t opened and the lower ‘petals’ are wilting... what have I got wrong? I was so excited and proud of the lil fella 🥺. I was told to not water it too much when it was flowering as the flowers would drop quicker. I’m not actually sure what a developed flower would look like with this. hopefully I can learn what not to do next time😅 Thank you ✨❤️
My zebra plant new leaves had no stripes at the bottom part and the leaf colour is quite faint too. I grow them indoor. 1m from my east facing window.
*I got my very first one a week ago and I love it* 😀❤️
I killed my first zebra plant by accident wen I sprayed my air plants-zebra was closer than I thought. . .
I have a nw zebra plant and it’s doing great!
Hello i love this plant i have it and have a flower it is beautiful .love your channel.😁
Thanks so much 😊
I have one & it has babies on 2 sides, TY for the information on this plant. I just bought my 2nd one yesterday. However I’ve had mine on the patio table under the umbrella, I’ll make sure it doesn’t get too much sun as I noticed a few tips we’re getting red in color. Mine is in a clay pot, it got very wet yesterday due to a storm we had, will watch that it dries out.
Question.. do these care tips apply to all Haworthia types, like the more translucent fleshy rosette types?
They will be very similar, but some varieties will likely be a lot more sensitive to water. Haworthia fasciata tends to be really tolerant of just about anything. Some of the more translucent varieties will do better with less water.
Most of them prefer to be in shady areas though and roughly the same cold hardiness (or lack thereof).
I got little baby zebra from a friend 4 years ago, it has been my easiest plant to take care of. I tend to underwater my succulents, but with this one they seems to be the perfect amount ! It's at a south facing window but there quite some shade from trees there, that seems to be perfect for this one.
I was really scared when I decided to break off its 3 first babies last year (who were bigger than the baby I got, but they all made it !
*Very nice 👌*
my zebra is awesome . It has a vine coming from the middle trying to produce whiye flowers. It also had a baby. I need to proprogate. Thank you for the video .
I love my succulents but I really am fascinated by my hiwartha and growing fast. Yea!
This was very helpful. Mine are getting brown tips. Maybe too much grow light? I have it in an arrangement, might do better solo.
You ask if we can see the red along the bottom of the zebra plant that’s had too much sun.....actually, no, there’s no zoom in and we can’t see anything...
i bought two of these for $3 off facebook marketplace. they were so closed up when i got them but i figured they were just getting too much light ... i put them in a low-medium indirect light corner of my room and theyre growing great without stretching!
My experience with a succulent that us getting too much water is it's too late.....no matter what you do! I can pull back on the water.....but once it decides that it has had too much water.....it's gonna die!
The tips of my zebra are turning brown and is staying outside of house under full shaded area. Its summer and hitting over 30. Is my zebra safe here?
HELLO, CAN I MAKE A SUGGESTION ABOUT YOUR CAMERA DISTANCE. IF POSSIBLE, COULD YOU BRING THE CAMERA CLOSER TO YOUR SUBJECT THE PLANTS AS I COULD NOT SEE THE STRIPES. LOTS OF LOVE AND BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, ANNETTE QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA.
Came here cause my kitty chewed the tips off a few of my little guy’s little arms 🤔
Mine is kinda like this but instead of white stripes it has small white bumps on the inside and outside of the leaves. It’s labeled as Gasteria but that’s kinda vague. Is it a zebra plant? (The bumps are kinda arranged like stripes)
Thank you! I was wondering why a couple of my leaves were discolouring and now believe it's due to under watering.
I have 2 zebra fasciata plant i bought at the same time 4 yrs ago and the other one is dying and im trying to save it...hope il be able to save it...btw, 💖 your hair!😍
I love my haworthia! It sits kinda close to the grow lights and it’s watered about every 3 weeks, but it is still in the tight clump it was in when I bought it. I’m going to move it further away from the light and maybe increase its watering frequency to every 2 weeks and we’ll see if it opens up like yours!
Good luck!
If my Haworthia is rotted in the middle but still rooted and has a healthy (but stretched out) top, how can I transplant it? I've had for over a year now.
Darn i had either a zebra plant or the attenuata (hope i spelled that right!) and it died on me -- i got it for free, and I'm afraid the previous owner didn't take very good care of it. Wish I had this video earlier!
I always wonder, why is my zebra plant always ALWAYS propagating like crazy!
I have several types of Haworthias and I absolutely love them. I did have some in a south facing window and they darkened quite a bit almost a black color so I pulled them away from the window and I think they’re doing much better now.
Thanks for the info!! 🌵❤️
