    Gymnocalycium mihanovichii
    Moon Cactus
This cute “mutant” cactus is actually a combination of two cacti, typically Gymnocalycium (the scion) and a rootstock cactus, such as Hylocereus. The term “moon cactus” typically refers to the yellow and orange varieties, however red varieties can be included.

"After the soil is dried out completely, I would give it another 5-6 days before watering it again." No wonder my moon cactus rotted! I didn't realize that they needed so little water. It is quite difficult to tell when they require more water just by visual cues. Definitely a good tip to know as I try to reroot what I managed to save from rot
Because the moon cactus is such a statement cactus, I'd pair it with a low-lying green cactus, like ripple jade, or a small delicate flower-like succulent, like october daphne or string of buttons

haha at least you did it with just a moon cactus, most cacti require dry cycles. and even more little water to become dormant during winter months

This makes me wonder how the original moon cactus was made.

    • @samueljohnson4806

The original Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is green and occasionally it will produce variegated (albino) pups. It's a form of mutation.

I agree with Ramona. I always thought they were painted, or were otherwise unnatural. That said, I just bought a pink one. Thank goodness I learned here they don't take full sun. I plan to plant it in an arrangement with a Fairy Castle cactus, which I think will look good. I'll need either another plant or perhaps just some attractive rocks or crystals to balance it out. Still thinking that over.

The way you have them staged is so cute. I love the way the colors of the Gymnocalyciums are complemented by the pots.
I have found this graft combination, the Gymnocalycium and dragon fruit, only live for about 3 years. Because the Gymnocalycium cactus is a desert plant and the dragon fruit cactus is a rainforest cactus, the two are not compatible. But then, there are 3 years to enjoy them.

I find it difficult to pair plants with even some of the less poky but still spiny varieties, cause it's hard to plant the poky one in the first place, but then you have to be reaching around it to plant the other! Even my aloe vera has poked holes in my other plants.

I must have over watered mine. I only have the bottom part. Maybe I'll get another & see if I can graft a "baby" to it. They're so colorful, tho' I've never been sure I liked the unnatural way they happen. Thanks.

I think Moon Cactus looks best planted just the way you have them alone in one pot. When I first bought mine, I planted 2 in one pot and then decided I didn't like them paired. So I repotted and gave them their own pot and I now have 5 of them.

Just got 2 and thought it was going to grow into a big cactus 🌵 😢 guess I'll buy more and make a mini "desert" box

Imo they would look good next to some Sedum Rubrotinctum (green jelly bean plant) since they both look so unnatural which would give it a playful look

Awesome video! I have seen a ton of these cacti. I'm not sure if it's my thing, but I'm much more open to them after seeing this video.

I have two of these, one red and the other red and yellow. I've had the red one for almost four years now! I like them in fairy gardens or with other cactus. I have my guys with my Ming Thing right now and I think they look neat. :)
