    I honestly think the "create a spirit when a spirit phases in" part is a distraction from the real strength of this commander. A flying creature that is virtually immune from targeted removal? That's a Voltron. You can't use Auras of course as it will phase when you try to target it, but you can equip all the swords you want and they'll stay attached whenever King of the Oathbreakers phases out.
    At this point the only thing opponents can do is wrath or try to use abilities like O-Rings or similar, but that's where you can get really tricksy... because King of the Oathbreakers makes every targeted removal spell you run double as a protection spell. Load your deck with more single-target kill/exile instants then you'd normally ever want in Commander, and any time an opponent tries to wrath, point a Swords to Plowshares at your own commander and he dips out until next turn. (or cast your own wrath and then phase your commander before it resolves)
    King of the Oathbreakers + Equipment + Kill Spells, toss in any other good/utility Spirits you want because the opponent can't kill them either, and you've got yourself a deck

    * Isochron Scepter, exile a Reprieve under it.
    * Eerie Interlude, Semester's End, Scapegoat, whatever you got - target all your stuff.
    * In response, tap the Scepter and bounce that spell back to hand.
    * Triggers that fire when things "become the target of a spell" don't require that spell to resolve to carry out their effect.
    This way, you get your triggers to make your tokens and you didn't even have to spend a card for it. Plus, if you have something like a Voltaic Key, you can untap the Scepter and keep up Reprieve in a more defensive fashion to protect your board.
    Also consider Mavinda, Students' Advocate as a way to reliably recur your targeting spells to get more token generation value out of them.

    According to an official ruling, "Permanents phase back in during their controller's untap step, immediately before that player untaps their permanents." And since "Whenever King of the Oathbreakers or another Spirit you control phases in, (you) create a tapped 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying," this also happens before untapping. This means all your spirit tokens untap, however they will still have summoning sickness.

    • @TheOpenmindStudio
      @TheOpenmindStudio 3 месяца назад

      So does that mean adding cards that untap creatures (which I assume was for the tokens) is pointless to add anyway, then?

    • @riley2492
      @riley2492 Месяц назад

      @TheOpenmindStudio to my understanding, no abilities or spells can be resolved during the untap step since no players recieve priority. So, the trigger to create a spirit when the king or another spirit phases in will be held to the next time a player receives priority. So the spirits would be tapped the turn they enter since they missed the untap step.

Having any 1-mana self-targetable spells means you can always just bounce out of an opponent's removal for creatures, auras, and equipment, especially because targeting happens as a spell goes on the stack, so counterspelling doesn't even do anything. Basically forcing your opponents to spend TWO pieces of removal for any one card you have to avoid said removal. I'm tired of people playing those kinds of decks.
