The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

As a youngster dion always be the best regardless what kind of music he sings
It’s so annoying because Elvis and Dion were SO GOOD at rock n roll and it clearly sounds better than any of their songs like this, so it’s a shame people thought both Elvis and Dion needed to leave rock to advance, when in reality, if both Dion and Elvis stayed with rock n roll they would’ve stayed alive in 1964 during the British Invasion!
One of the very few people that's been famous even longer than Dylan and is still making great music.
I'm a big fan of Dion's! His one and only appearance on the Sullivan show is somewhat infamous. He sang two songs, "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "Lover Come Back to Me". Dion himself has stated that this was a mistake and that he should have sung his biggest hits instead; "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer" but under the advice of others, he was told to "advance" his career and image by singing adult standards, a la Bobby Darin.
"Lover Come Back to Me" is from the operetta, "New Moon" and a lot of singers liked recording fast-tempo versions of this standard in the '60's. Dion does a decent job, but I do agree that he should have sung his popular records. Thanks for uploading this curio of an appearance!
Yes, this is Dion trying to be someone else. Later on, he tried the Bob Dylan/folk route and had a hit with Abraham, Martin and John, but not much beyond. There followed drug addiction problems. His bio book from the 80s is hard to find but a worthwhile read.
@@MostlyBrenda Dion's musical career has been all over the map and is quite fascinating.
totally wrong.....this is a famous standard sung by the greats....and if in retrospect he couldnt do the song justice it was by no means a mistake to try
@@MostlyBrenda you think by Pigeonholing a singer to your specifications, makes them good?
the greatest singers of all time have sung this song and it certainly wasnt a mistake to try....sure its a mistake to people like you...who think a singer just needs to stick to 3 songs you like
@@jadezee6316 Regardless of opinion, I'm relating a factual anecdote. It is a fact that Dion himself thought he made a mistake by singing standards on the show instead of his hits. He has gone on record saying so, and many of his fans also agree that it was ultimately a wasted opportunity in retrospect. If you do some research, as I wrote originally, you will find that Dion did not choose the songs he sang on this episode; he was pressured into singing them by others who thought it would be good for his career.
Let's hear it for Bobby Dion!
Seriously though, it's fascinating to watch Dion try a song like this, rather than one of his big hits.
The song's a challenge and he sings it very well.
Not his style. But when he sings the blues . . . Oh man!
THIS IS GREAT! HE CAN SING ANYTHING!
Omg, my all-time favorite male singer, and he was made to sing an old standard, as if he were Bobby Darin, instead of being allowed to sing one of his hits, either with the Belmonts, or his singles with the Del Satins backing him up! Dion and the Belmonts even recorded a standard, "Where or When", which was one of their first hits! What a wasted appearance! But, it's always great to see Dion singing, especially without a hat!
you have no clue what you are talking about..first of all this song is far better than any hit Dion has ever had...sung by the likes of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to name just a couple of great singers that recorded it....and my bet is HE was the one who chose it....
@@jadezee6316 HA HA
As a fan of him, crosbys, Paul ankas and many more i know what good music is and i think that is my new favorite
I’ve been trying to find more young Dion live! It’s unfortunate because Dion said he wished he sang runaround sue or the wanderer on this show but he was too insecure!! It sucks because he was a big star at the time in 1962 and sang these two unknown songs that did not promote his hits!!
The song was written in 1928 by Sigmund Romberg with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein. Barbra Streisand recorded it the same year as Dion’s performance.
I would guess that after hearing Barbra he never sang this again in public.
Thanks for showing another iconic living rock’n’roll star.
Have a great day!
I would have love to see dion and the belmonts perform their hits on this show.😔💔
It reminds me on Bobby Darin😉 I suspect this Ed Sullivan Appearance is pretty rare and i like it. Thanks for this upload👌
It's such a wonderful Performance ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Have A Magical Day ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I Love Watching The Ed Sullivan Show ❤🎉❤
Thanks For Sharing This ❤🎉❤
J❤very much 👍👏👏🙏
Grande cantor americano
He sure jazzed that up! Great song that doesn't seem sad this way. 😯😊💜
Dion Another Great Voice Of The Wonderful 60’s !! ❤️Loved Dion’s Song’s , “ The Wonderer “ and “ Runaround Sue “His Greatest Hits That He Should Have Been Able To Sing On This Show !! A Terrific Singer / Entertainer, He Is An ICON ❤️🌹🥰
This song may have appealed to an older audience in Las Vegas. “Run Around Sue” appealed to young people who bought records and that’s what he should have sung.
I loved this!
Bonita cancion se la dedico a mi honeybee
You went away
I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Dion DiMucci has stood the test of time and this early appearance, choosing to sing this classic popular song...(.made famous by the likes of Billie Holiday...Ella...Peggy Lee and Nat King Cole....even Sinatra tried a few live performances)......goes a long way in explaining why...
Interesting. Were either of these 2 tracks, "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "Lover Come Back to Me", ever released on an album or CD?
Unfortunately no but I wish it did
Dion Francis DeMucci,
Born 18 July 1939.
Stop making everything a “notify me” premiere
Very bizarre song choice! But I do like Dion a lot.
Achieved immortality with Abraham, Martin and John. Nothing else is of conseuence.
lol...btw..its consequence

“Run Around Sue” was his best.
Love Dion, but this just does not work, should of been promoting on this show your latest single..shame
I wonder why ed sullivan never allowed doo wop groups sing their big hits? For example why didn't the skyliners sang "Since i dont have" on the show or Dion and the belmonts "A Teenager In Love"?
@@MiguelGonzalezPwhy didn’t Dion sing lovers who wander or Little Diane?? This was August 1962 when those singles were top 10s and perfect for this show. Or runaround sue or Wanderer. Legit why sing a song when you could sing a song you wrote that’s yours and make more money / sales 🤦♂️
@@ShaneNagy well ed sullivan didnt like artist sing their top hits on the show.
I hope he did this before Barbra started singing it.
😂😂😂
Instead of singing to/for the young people who bought his records, Dion is trying to appeal to the adult audience. Like Paul Anka and Bobby Darin, Dion felt he had to move beyond rock and roll to enjoy a long career in music.
It’s so annoying because Elvis and Dion were SO GOOD at rock n roll and it clearly sounds better than any of their songs like this, so it’s a shame people thought both Elvis and Dion needed to leave rock to advance, when in reality, if both Dion and Elvis stayed with rock n roll they would’ve stayed alive in 1964 during the British Invasion!
.............just didn't do it for me.................acceptable but.............meh.
I like Dion. But here he's trying to be Bobby Darrin. Doesn't work.
