- Our group hit the Tahoe Rim Trail on June 11th for a three-day, two-night backpacking trip to Dardanelles Lake and Round Lake. This particular trail is a section of the Tahoe Rim Trail.
The weather was perfect on our first day, and we had a great time! I even managed to get my drone out to capture a section of the trail and some of Dardanelles Lake.
There were six of us in the original group - Andrew, Mike, Stephan, Maureen (Mo), Susan, and me. Donna and Misty (along with Scooter) joined us later in the day.
On Friday, we woke up to partly cloudy skies and a lot of wind which picked up even more later in the day. We were keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and the outlook got gloomier as the day wore on. Steve, Donna, and Misty hit the trail in the early afternoon, but the rest of us held out until the last minute. The clouds were getting more menacing as the afternoon wore on, so at 4:30, we made the call to hit the trail.
We started getting sprinkled on just as we got into Big Meadow, and by the time we got to the trailhead, the rain was really coming down. The weather sure has a way of making things exciting!

It is so glorious to walk with you my friend! Great adventure and beautiful place.😀Friend- From New york.😀LIKE 19👍My Friend.
Thanks for visiting!
Videography is stunning. Great framing. Natural sounds.
Thank you very much!
Extraordinary footage, well narrated and edited. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for watching! This area gets quite a bit of use in the summer, so I'm glad I went when I did!
Nice Video! Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see more 😊
Thanks! I just checked out your channel. You have some amazing videos! I'm looking forward to watching more.
Excellent video with great aerial footage of your basecamp. A nice place for your basecamp as well. The redwood trees were awesome. I also noticed that you had some fast people in your group. The lady in the blue jacket was moving out smartly when you were videoing her toward the end. You kept a smooth track on her. Overall, I think this video is one of your best. As always, beautiful country with good friends make a trip more enjoyable and memorable. Outstanding adventure to all.
Thanks so much! Basecamp was awesome...the best views, but somewhat sheltered from the wind and a lot of flat granite for basking in the sun. As for trees, are you referring to the tree I highlighted @7:49. If so, I believe that is a Giant Sequoia (at least I think). The base of the tree is huge, and the lower limbs were covered in moss. It was a very striking tree. It is too dry on this side of the Sierra for redwoods if I recall correctly.
LOL! We were all moving smartly trying to beat the rain back to the car. She is an amazing lady...I've given her a trail name of Energizer Bunny...because she has so much energy!
I am blessed to have some really amazing friends!
Wow! What a beautiful spot on the lake Maryann! And I see you have the Dirigo 😎👍 It’s one of my favorite tents!
So far, I'm really liking the tent! Pitching can be a little challenging on granite. I just have to hunt around or use big rocks. LOL! Thanks so much for watching!
Maryann Hazel I hear you, those issues have happened to me as well. I just keep a freestanding tent for when I know I’ll be camping on rocky terrain. I’ve got so many shelters now I think I can be classified as a tent hoarder 🤪🤣
@@alexonthemountain8343 - LOL! I hear you!
I love how your group is excited to help you make a video! My friends usually try to stay off camera or duck out of the way. LOL Gorgeous place to go backpacking, wow! Love the drone footage! Your camping spot by the lake looked like a postcard with all the rocks and greenery poking out then that stunning water in the backdrop. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go there one day!
LOL! My friends aren't too camera shy fortunately...and they can be highly entertaining! We lucked out on the campsite at the lake - it is usually packed. Thanks so much for watching!
you all prolly dont care but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my account password. I would love any tricks you can give me
@Tatum Blaine Instablaster ;)
@Porter Lewis Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Porter Lewis It worked and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account!
Very beautiful trip Maryann! Some big packs by my standards. Noticed in a comment you were in the 41 pound range. On my 11 day trip in Jasper National Park last September I started with 40.5 pounds. But you are carrying a lot of camera equipment, which adds up fast. Really enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching Bryan! I was carrying about 47 pounds (which was no fun) on the High Sierra Trail, so I figured 41 was doable this early in the season. I did have way too much camera gear, but I'm glad I brought the drone. I was disappointed that I couldn't shoot the Milky Way due to the cloudy weather. But there is always next time!
Fun group to go on a backpack trip with! Great trail and amazing scenery! 👍👍
They are a blast - never a dull moment. LOL! We have had some pretty amazing adventures. Thanks so much for stopping by!
@@MaryannHazel Are you the group leader? That’s some extra fun! 👍👍🥾🥾
@@JenniferLupine - I organized this particular hike. I ended bringing several friends from different groups I hike with. We had so much fun!
@@MaryannHazel That’s awesome. I’m looking forward to catching up on your videos, maybe over winter... we still have some good hiking weather. 🤣😂
That was a great hike, beautiful views of the lakes excellent drone footage, and awesome trail, what a perfect outing minus a bit of wind and rain
Thanks! I really need to get out and practice more with the drone - I just never make the time. But that needs to change! Thanks for watching!
It is so glorious to walk with you! I can smell the pines and breath the fresh air. Love the gurgling water and the flora. What a beautiful lake. Did you take the awesome footage around and over the lake with a drone. It’s so well done❤️
Thanks so much Kris - it was such a beautiful and peaceful lake.
awesome place ... thanks for sharing my friend :)
Thanks for visiting!
Love the rocks in the pathway as steps in the water! That camping ⛺️ spot was perfect. What better place to camp than right by the water? This was a lovely hike and this area is gorgeous 😍. Thanks for bringing us along 👍
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm so lucky to have great friends that allow me to drag them along. LOL!
@@MaryannHazel mind if I ask where do you know all these people you hike with? I'm trying to find small group of people who willing or down to hike, camp together within california.
@@stomperr69 - I know several of them through work and a couple are friends of friends. It can be a challenge to find a group of friends that are as compatible as this one. They are all super easy-going and adventurous!
So fun!!
We had a blast for sure! Thanks for watching!
Maryann Hazel my friend Andrew shared it with me. He knows I wanna do things like this too
@@Lainey1280 Awesome! We will be dragging you out with us too!
Maryann Hazel awe! That would be nice!!
This was my first BP trip in the Tahoe area. The lake and meadows were amazing! you did a spot on job capturing it all.
It was really great meeting you Susan! I'm hoping I'll see you again this summer on some trips!
Awesome
Maryann this looks like you had an amazing trip! It is so beautiful out there right now. Your camping views were gorgeous. I love the drone footage. I was thinking about you wondering if the weather had held out for you.
We got out of there just in time to avoid the bad weather. We were really hustling on the way out - with ginormous packs! LOL!
Beautiful place!!!!
It really is! Thanks for stopping by!
Great adventure and beautiful place. Regards
Thanks for stopping by! I'll be sure to check out your channel - looks like you have some amazing wildlife videos!
Beautiful place! Drone shots at beginning were great. How much did your pack weigh? All your packs looked so heavy. I went out on that Sunday for a two night trip. After that storm. I think I hit the weather pretty good. :)
My pack was 41ish...which is relatively light for all the stuff I had with me. We had one that was 25ish pounds, a couple in the low 30s, and three in the low 50s (been there...done that!). You definitely lucked out on the weather. I'm planning to do Mt. Ralston the end of the week. Hopefully, it won't be too windy! Just a day hike.
This is amazing, Maryann!!
I have 2 permits in July in desolation wilderness.
We should meet up :)
I would totally be down for that! What are the dates?
Love your video. Do you need a camp permit?
You don't need a permit to backpack/camp at Dardanelles Lake. But get there early, because it can get pretty crowded!
do you have any problem with the tent? the dirigo 2. Like whenever during the rain the water entering the bathfloor from the top zipper or spindrift below the door entering the bath floor?
I haven't had any issues so far, and I was in a bit of a rainstorm when I went to Thousand Island Lake a few weeks ago. But it wasn't really windy. Only time will tell. So far, the tent has performed really well. But again, I haven't been caught in a torrential downpour.
@@MaryannHazel thank you, that is a gorgeous tent! and I have sent email to you by the way provided from about section so hope you got one!
are you required to have a bear container or can you use an ursack or other bear bags?
humongousphungus - bear canisters/containers are not required at Showers Lake, but they are highly recommended. Not only do they keep bears from getting to your food, but they also deter chipmunks, squirrels and marmots (which can be pretty stealthy at getting to your food). I prefer a bear canister (I use the Bearikade Expedition and Scout) to ensure wildlife can’t get to food. They learn pretty quickly the people=a good meal if the people aren’t paying attention. Once they are successful and get a taste of human food (which can be deadly to them!), they are pretty persistent. You can use bear bags, but they are difficult to hang in many places, and you need to practice. If you can reach your food, a bear has a pretty good chance of reaching it too. I hope that helps!
Do you need reservations to camp?
You don't need reservations at Dardanelles or Round Lake, but it can get pretty busy there on weekends. Fortunately, you can spread out a little around Dardanelles and I think it is the prettiest lake of the two.
@@MaryannHazel really appreciate your reply. We just got back from lake margaret. It's my first backpacking
@@StyledbyTess - I’m sure you had an amazing time! I am getting ready to post my next section to my channel and after watching it a gazillion times, I really want to go back into Desolation. Especially Fontanillis Lake. It was gorgeous!
@@MaryannHazel we went to see that and that's the day I wanted to do backpacking. We did 16 miles in a day hurting at the end
@@StyledbyTess Yeowza...16 miles is a long day! Hopefully, that won't deter you from getting backpacking. Just remember - it only hurts for a while. LOL!
Beautiful 😍 Loved the video. Well done. 💪 Awesome song selection too. Thanks for sharing. Subscribed to follow your adventures #242. We make adventure videos too, I hope our channels grow together. 👍
You two are such a cute couple! I just checked out your channel and subbed. I'm looking forward to seeing your future adventures. Thanks for stopping by!
