Solo Camp in 80 -100 MPH WIND STORM at Carson Pass | Sierra Nevada Mountains

- I backpack up into the Historic and snowy Carson Pass of the northern Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Not knowing fully the weather I would encounter as the winds were expected to reach 80-100 mph in the higher elevations.
Keep Hiking!

Chris, you're just impossible to dislike. How human you are, how often you smile, laugh, and purely enjoy ever second you're outside. Even in a darned scary windstorm. I think your comment early on, "I missed the extended weather report stating..." shows your self-effacing humor as well. Bravo!
I could not agree with you more.
I know, I try to dislike him as well. Won’t happen ❤
Tent camping in a hurricane, with a history lesson thrown in! You the man! Impressive, glad i was in my warm house watching this. Thanks for another memorable adventure!
Good stuff! Thanks for watching Bill...
and sadly the last adventure . Its all storytelling now . Later bro . Loved it while it lasted.
I like the camping / story telling format.
@@tdiler12 bu-bye
@@tdiler12I know this is a yr old but what did you mean by the last adventure?
I've been in that situation in the sierras, very scary. I was most worried about a tree blowing over on my tent and crushing me to death....and I too didn't sleep all night. Good video , and thanks for sharing.
Welcome! Keep Hiking!
exactly! trees become the biggest threat. I remember a night out camping on my boyfriends parents land. we set up in the open because it was so windy we were worried about the trees. why we didn't just pack it in & go home on the 4 wheeler, I don't know... glad we didn't though, it was fun! I slept fine in his arms, I think he was the restless one. ;)
I worried that a large branch might fall on Chris.
Seems like ear plugs might help for sleeping
Recently I was watching a camping show with really high winds and they pitched there tent close to a open spot close to a cliff all I could think about was that wind picking up the tent with the person and chucking him over the cliff I was a nervous reck just watching!
Thank you Chris. On a day like this where my PTSD symptoms have reared their ugly heads, when I can’t leave the house; this was so soothing. Thanks All
I forgot my earplugs on my most recent mountain camp and had pretty bad wind and rain. Couldn’t sleep so I just shoved wadded up tissue paper in my ears and tossed and turned all night. And here you are giving a little history lesson in the middle of the night. Haha loved it!! New subscriber! ATB
kept me calm to talk about a little history...Donner party was no party!
Yes, the wind and rain are very loud inside the tent.
@@basecampchris omg 😱 that’s for sure
Packing up our recently sold home( Praise God!) and discovered your channel. I love me some Bigfoot stories..so now I'm bing-watching your channel while packing up said house! I love the stories!!
Chris you have such a great attitude in a bad situation you the man
I love reading all the comments on this video. I got a real good kick out of watching you maneuver the wind and keep your cool. If I had been there with you...I see myself laughing the whole time. I was almost laughing just sitting in my recliner. But I did have to finish watching to see if you made it out alive. Holy 🐄 cow! Your a brave hero 👏 💪 💙 strong man. I love camping 🏕 I'm a happy camper! 😊
I remember the first time that I went across "Donners pass, in my semi-truck, and thinking about those folks and their story of doom back in those days. Stay safe out there, and happy trails.
Thank you - Boogie Dog!
I went through some of those passes when out with my trainer. Trainer was sick and in his bunk while I, a total rookie found myself in these passes that required ALOT of braking. Well I would stab/pump brake when needed and was driving extremely cautiously. After one of my braking, all of the stabbing and pumping, he yells out at me "are you doing that on purpose???", I said "YES, I don't want to die". So he says to use the Jake brake and I told him he never showed me where it was or how to use it. So he got his extremely sick self out of bed and showed me and immediately fell back asleep. He had covid and wouldn't cover his mouth when he coughed so then I got sick shortly after and he dropped me off at a hotel somewhere in Northern California because I was too sick to even move. Good times!!! That was May of 2022. One year and one month ago. I really miss otr. Love driving and traveling ❤
Really enjoyed watching this and hearing about the history of this beautiful yet rugged area. I grew up camping with my family and this is the only way to refuel spiritually and physically. Really glad that you made it through the storm safely. God Bless
Tenting in a storm tip: Find some round rocks and lay them in the tent along your outer walls. If sharp edge rocks is all you can find wrap then in jackets or clothes. That in addition to your tent pegs and tiedowns.
I love watching you eat, Chris!!! You earned it!⛷️
You are a hoot to watch camping chris!..you have that spirit of a child out camping for his first time. 😊 with the knowledge of an experienced adult camper of course. Continue to have fun!
A great camping adventure AND a history lesson...fantastic! Man, that was some brutal wind! You're right, thank God it wasn't snowing, scary to think about. The tent withstood it like a trooper, great choice on that purchase. This was a great video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it...Thanks DA!!
I first backpacked this area about 50 years ago, camped at Frog Lake. Then again about thirty years ago, I camped at some small unnamed lake. Very beautiful country.
Wow..!! It takes a Special Gentle Man to be so chirpy about Camping in a Hurricane Storm.?!! It truly is lovely to see such a Happy Chappy and everyone can see you’re a Half-Full kinda Man, especially during these difficult times to be here with such Happiness and Grace - this warms my heart..! Thank you so much..!
My pleasure! Thanks_I do love it out there.
Definitely in my top 5 Base Camp Chris videos! Kept me on edge of my seat!
Good to know...yes - kept me on the edge of my seat too!!
I recall the older version of that tent only having 3 poles. The addition of that half pole guyed out might have been the life saver. Hiking out on no sleep argg tough. GL on your next rip.
Thanks Robb!
Good tracking Chris, you had me a little worried there for a while. Yes I remember the donner and Sutter expedition, I wonder how many times back in the early 1900s, 1800s, 1700s 1600s and on back where people were out in the middle of nowhere and had accidents or wild animals got them. My dad and uncle's we're way out in the country in the middle of nowhere going or coming someplace and a bad snow storm came up and the temperature was around freezing and I don't think they were dressed all that warm and they figured they were going to die and all of a sudden some guy comes along driving a tractor and saved them. Well keep hiking and enjoy the sights and maybe I'll catch you out in the woods somewhere, bye now.
So glad my husband found your channel. Your videos have been a god send helping to distract & bide my in between time of my pain medication for cancer treatments. Can’t wait til I’m better & start backpacking again. Thank you for sharing your videos & stories.
God Speed your recovery Sheila. Bless you!
Years ago was in a very similar situation on a small mountain with unexpected high winds and rain, it was definitely unsettling to say the least. Glad you made it down safely. Thanks for sharing! :) :)
Oh wow! Rain adds another dimension! Thanks!
REI will sell a million of these tents now lol. Nice video Chris. Glad you’re safe.
REI branded tents are actually pretty good. I rented one this past summer camping in Colorado, after returning a Mountain Hardware Nimbus UL 1 (which was terrible don’t) buy it incredibly flimsy.
Another great thing about REI tents everything’s color coded.
Thanks 👍 got through it.
REI SHOULD GIVE HIM BIG KUDOS. I CAN'T BELIEVE HE ENDURED THIS TORRENTIAL WINDSTORM. THAT IS INCREDIBLE! AND HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THE WINDS WILL BE THAT FURIOUS. HE IS GOOD. AND GOD IS GREAT! 😁😁😁
So you think the 16.5k subs will buy a millions tents??
@@norml.hugh-mann Its called hyperbole dude, look it up!
Thankfully you are an experienced outdoorsman!!!
You have all the PROPER equipment, which saw you through such extreme weather!
This was fun! (For me - a non-camper.) glad you made it out safely!
One of the best 'bad weather' videos on RUclips. Enjoyed watching.
Wow!!! What an adventure! The times I've been most alive was when I was close to death! I'm 65 now this brought back great memories. Thank you.
Thank goodness you didn't encounter a widow maker! Great video and glad you're ok! New sub in Idaho and love your channel!
I just watched this video. I'm happy you managed to weather the storm safely. That was really something else.
Thank you...long night.
Dude, Chris, holy buckets! I have been a few windstorms, but nothing like that or that long. I knew you had a crazy streak, but you didn't have to prove it. Windstorm raging outside and a story about Kit Carson while its going on, just crazy. Time for REI to give you tent sponsorship deal. Moving your tent and guying it to the trees was brilliant and probably saved your bacon. One of the best you tube videos I have ever seen about camping. Next time stealth camp in a hotel lobby. Just stay safe and cheers! Seriously stay safe!
Thanks Ben! camping in a Motel 6! would work...
Thank you Chris for taking us up to the mountains with you , it’s a beautiful gift 🎁 😊
Rei makes some awesome tents. I have used the 3 man Half Dome and in one camp mine was the only one standing when others got torn up and scattered. Yes the poles deformed momentarily, no breakage. Winter camping with heavy snow shed from it. Hurrah for Half Dome REI tents.
Good stuff! Makes ya look forward to the weather.
Clear cold and windy, pretty neat video thanks for posting 👍
That wind is insane!!!! Wow!!! Great job getting through it!
Very much! Thanks!
Awesome as always Chris! I almost came out to frog lake and elephant’s back but decided to do just a day hike up Mt. Rose. Still nearly got blown off the peak by that same windstorm, it was absolutely no joke!
Yes - a lot of exposure up Mont Rose/ Good country! Glad you made it back save!
Great tent, near perfect placement. Incredible video that still gives me anxiety from my warm bed.
It was a long night....kept my composure...but was getting cranky after 4am! LOL Thanks for watching.
@@basecampchris To me it was far more interesting than watching most movies out. This had real drama to it.
Amazing wind storm Chris. You put the tent to the test. It’s what makes a story. Good work keeping positive.
Thanks 👍 Appreciate it.
I am sooo glad that you made it thru ths one! You are so brave! Glad you are back! Hooray!! Liz
Thank you so much!
You're a champ man and that tent is the deal! Keep Hiking!
Thanks BLB!
That's an epic video. I watched it with my daughter and we were impressed about how calm and in control you looked. We've been trough quit a blast last year in Northern British Columbia at 1800m but nothing compared to this. Glad you made it safely.
Thanks Jean!
Criss, this was your very best show ever. It was 4 real, all the way. THANK YOU I know it wasn't easy. I had one simular years ago, but with only 80 mph winds. It shredded my tent.
Lewie
Wow, thank you
Holy cow! That was scary. So glad it ended well!!🙏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
i must have said "wow" 200 times while i watched this.
wild ride.
also, cool history story.
thanks.
Hey Thanks GrumpyDave...yes, got through it and the gear made the difference!
🤦🏼♀️💪🙏👍💙 congratulations for making it through that night! Wow! Good job! I have to say I was a bit worried, for you. You did it.
Love how yours was the only car at that popular trailhead. Try that in the summer.
Yes it is a popular trailhead. I tend to avoid the crowds.
@@basecampchris Yes it actually ruins the backcountry experience.---- We're all just glad Chris didn't blow off of the Sierra crest.
Loved this wow what a blast - literally! More please
Heading out again soon. Keep Hiking!
Love your video I’m living vicariously through you 🇺🇸
Thanks Cherl! Keep Hiking!
In review moving the tent saved you from what could have been a nightmare . Good job Chris, good job rei .very impressed with your adventure great experience.
Thanks Charles!
love your stuff!
keep on camping🎈
The stitching and quality of your tent is nothing short of amazing. You were getting winds like they get on Everest. Drop REI a note and tell them of your night. I'm sure they would be interested.
Had the tent NOT held up, your experience would have been truly a nightmare. This overnight camp experience proves that a person should have the very best equipment.........your life may depend on it. Glad you made it through safely.
Awesome, thank you! Yes, It has served me well!
Oh my goodness!! This was truly a nail biter for me…no joke! I’m so glad you moved your tent and guy’d it to those trees. What an amazing storm there. Bravo for getting it all packed away without losing anything.🧡 So happy you made it to your car safe n sound.
Excellent adventure!!♥️🏕
Thank you Kathy!! KP HKNG!
Wow! That wind is raging... I'm glad that you made it thought the night without blowing away. I enjoyed the history lesson too. I think this video will make a compelling case for the tent. Thanks for an awesome video, Chris!
Welcome ATJ!
They should be paying you for this vid dude, best advert they'll ever get!
Glad you made it back OK
Thanks Nikki!
I take my hat off to you Chris. I would have needed a nappy having to go through a night like that I can tell you.
Glad you made it safe and well and I bet you slept like a log the following night.
All the best Chris and thankyou for all your endeavors and always with a smile, respect to you sir
Thanks 👍Tarris!
That there is some crazy wind! Im loving the mountain man theme. Keep'em coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Had that kind of wind on the Nova Scotia Coast 1 tent blue away right into the ocean with sleeping bags in it. must get those stakes in first, the p o l e almost broke during setup. The fun of motorcycle camping, love it.
Sounds like you a had a Wild night as well. KP HKNG!
this was a wild ride!!! I'm remembering what you said a while back when things seem hectic or spooky: Stay positive, keep yourself busy. Great video! keep hiking!
Favorite part of the video is when you break camp, the sun trying to break through the wonderful 🌈 and the music thank you
Wow, what an adventure, glad you made it out in 1 piece.
Thanks for watching!
It's always best to buy as much food which lifts your spirits. Nothing like on a bad night/day to eat something which just makes you happy. Makes life a lot easier to handle. Thanks for the video Chris. Liked, and Shared. Woah, that wind sure is strong Chris. It is a good thing you moved your tent.
Hell of an adventure... I was enthralled
I was exhausted! lol Thanks for watching Michael!
Moral of the story: Be prepared. Solid temp. Communication. Food. Keeping your head. Thanks for taking us along.
At least you can now say you have experienced AND survived it… great job chris nerves of steal! ‘Teaches N a storm’ is your new TRAIL NAME
Thank you Calvin...It helped to focus on other things during the storm...like some early history. Like the Trail Name!
A 55 min base camp Chris !!!! Awesome !! Love the video, excellent test for the tent, beautiful footage, get home and get some sleep lol.
Thank you Indian Hemlock! Always appreciate it.
Haha nice, you posted this on my birthday lol Nov 7th 1977 lol As a Georgia boy, weather like that puts us southern folks to sleep, good storms, rain on a tin roof, perfect sleep every time lmao
Well this is one my wife is never allowed to see. Glad you’re safe.
Thank you Christopher!
Glad you are okay. Relentless storm but great idea to move and re-anchor the tent. Hell of a night man.
Thank you Harry...got through it. BCC

I AM NEW TO YOUR CHANNEL, CHRIS. AND AM SO VERY HAPPY TO SEE THIS VIDEO WHICH APPEALED TO ME. ONE I NEVER THOUGHT THAT REI TENTS ARE STRONG. WELL, YOU TOOK THAT THOUGHT AWAY. LOL
THANK GOD THAT THOSE TREES DIDN'T FALL OVER. YOU PICKED THE RIGHT AREA TO RELOCATE THE TENT (TO PITCH & STRING UP ON TWO PERFECT TREES).
AND I MUST AGREE, I HAVE NEVER SEEN AND HEARD WINDS AS STRONG AS WHAT YOU'VE ENDURED. INCREDIBLE!!!
THANK GOD YOU'VE MADE IT THRU.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCES.
⚘♥️⚘🌹😇
P.S. YOU DESERVED THAT DOUBLE RAINBOW. AND SO DO WE WHO WATCHED. ♥️♥️♥️👍🙏
Thank you so much Lady A.R. Browne... yes, the double rainbow gave me and extra burst to push through! Quite inspiring to see!
Sooooo brave Chris..........like a safe and cosy little shelter in a blizzard✨️🍀✨️🍀✨️🍀🧡
Omg, I couldn’t stop watching! I had to see how it all turned out. Yes, I was thankful to be in my house, snuggled down in my warm bed, with my two little dogs snuggled close to me! I felt so bad for you and kept my fingers crossed that your tent would hold fast. I had to wonder if you would have gone to Plan B had you listened to the complete weather report! Lesson learned! Glad you made it out and hope you were able to nap
later! Keep ‘em coming!
I love that you go out on a work night🤣…no point in wasting any day! Thanks for this, Chris! I enjoy your videos!🥾🥾
Thanks for watching!
I was camping at Iron Mountain Snow Park out on the point on February 9th, 2020. The forecast was for winds up to 30 miles per hour and temps in the mid 30s and we were a little over-prepared for those conditions which is what you want in the winter, right. The winds started around midnight as forecast, but quickly escalated to some pretty scary gusts. I have some video from the inside of my tent throughout the night. It was awful around 4AM. The video looks like it is being attacked on the outside. It sounded like a jet engine coming at you. One of my snow stakes eventually worked loose, so I had to hold one end with my chair over my head so I could get some sleep. We had a heck of a time going back up the hill to the parking lot. Gusts were so bad that it was knocking me sideways and pushing my sled, and that was with stopping, bracing myself and trying to stay low. It was crazy! Two of my friends were knocked over on the way up. The worst was getting up near the parking lot and have a tree fall right behind me. I started running (as best you can in snowshoes pulling a sled) and it hit my sled and my backpack. Geez…I know I was lucky. Amazing how quickly the weather can turn up there. We had snow beating down on us to top it off. An experience like that makes you really appreciate calm days up there. The NWS said the Kirkwood weather station reported winds up to 205 mph (although there was discussion that was a false reading). I talked to a person at the Reno NWS and they said the winds were likely well over 130+ mph in our area. I can attest to that! They shut Kirkwood and a couple other ski resorts down because of the crazy winds. A huge tree fell across the road too, but we managed to drag parts of it away so we could get out. Definitely an adventure we will remember forever. I’m glad you made it out ok. I’m surprised you were able to keep your camera standing. LOL!
Thank you Maryann! appreciate all the info! BCC
The more of you I watch, the greater my respect for you. I salute you!
💫🥀✨️
This was awesome!
I don’t know where the quote comes from, but “it’s not an adventure until everything goes wrong”
Keeping the positive attitude is so key on dicey occasions…
And having good gear that you can have trust in.
Loved the video
Hello Chris, after this outing, you should change your name to
Mr. Adventure. Great video Chris.
I'm happy that you made it out ok.
🤗
I like it! Thanks Ronald!
If my history teacher in high school taught like this from a tent in a horrible storm in the middle of nowhere I might have paid attention.
LOL...I'll try Algebra in a Blizzard next time...( do love the history! )
In the beginning I was laughing my head off but after a bit I realized the dangerI could feel what you must have been going through. The best video ever. Better than survival man (which I haven't seen in years).
Thank you, Chris, for taking us on your camping trip! Reminds me of the months I spent living, hiking, and camping in the Canadian Rockies.
I am grateful for your willingness experienced knowledge. It’s nice for me because I am getting crippled and can’t hike the way I am use to or hike at all at this point. Thank you!
Way to push through the adversity brother! Keep Hiking!💪🏼
Appreciate it!
Wow, hope u got some sleep. What an adventure!!! Glad u got out ok. That was just a taste of the craziness that the early settlers experienced. Wow!
Exactly...they had to cross the entire range with families...no roads either.
That wind was wicked scary! Don't know how you stayed so calm! 😮
Thank you so much for sharing your great adventure Chris! I always enjoy your trips and your stories very much. You are an inspiration! 💗😊🏕🏕🏕
Great video, as always. Love the history lesson. You were very fortunate to have good quality gear. That could have gone sideways on you real fast. Look forward to the next trip. Stay safe.
very true...cheap Walmart tent would of not made it.
That was really quite an adventure, thanks for taking us along.👍🇺🇲💯
Wow! What a night! Good tent indeed.
It sure is!
You, Sir have earned a like and sub because of the history talk. Oh, and the awesome video where you survive and entertain through ridiculous weather. That was nice too.
Much appreciated! Keep Hiking!
Chris, thanks for taking us with you on another of your wild and wacky adventures. I remember when you spent the night in the crater and the next day you woke up to snow and low visibility all around you. Keep hiking brother. :-)
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for leading me to bomb proof tent. ✌😄✌
Glad you made it thru the wind safely!
Welcome!
I absolutely love all your videos . So soothing when I’m having anxiety. Love all your stories. You are truly a genuine one. So refreshing in this crazy world 🤗

JUST BE CAREFUL MR.CHRIS TAKE CARE THOSE HIGH WINDS ARE SCARY BE SAFE AND MANY,MANY BLESSINGS
Great video Chris, very impressed with the tent. Glad the snow stayed off for you 🙂
Me too! Thank you!
Dang I was anxious for you! Glad you made it through safe!
Thank you.
You often make my day. Highly enjoyable. Unless you did it for entertainment purposes, we love the weather channel brother. Take care!!
Really enjoyed the camp-out. You know what to do, and I like that. I was concerned about the tree limbs, but everything worked out. A good video. Thank you for including us on your trips. I have never camped out in a tent before, but hey, I may one day. Stay safe Chris. Deme in Bama.
Great video and your video is bringing back some pretty scary memories. My buddy and I set out to summit Mount Whitney but couldn’t quite make it due to an unexpected storm. We did not have a good tent and the wind was unbearable. We were cooking inside the tent and the wind blew so hard that the heat created a hole in the test. We stuffed a sock in it and temperatures were insanely cold. I Peed inside of my sleeping bag because it was too cold to even get out. Getting back to our vehicle was dangerous after all the snow and wind. I honestly didn’t know if you were going to see the light of day. Glad you were safe and great video.
Thanks T Charlton...sounds like a rough night/ trip up there. The Sierra get the Big Gusts!
Basecamp Chris is the only other person that has had more adventures than I have . Mine are while driving and camping through the West. Well done Chris!
Loved the music. And even I was relieved when you spotted your truck!
Wow... great tent. Glad the tent is holding up for you on that crazy high windy night. Made me think of what the animals and trees have endured year after year. Amazing.
