Rescuers Reunite With Saved Seal And Her Baby

- A very special and beautiful encounter for the rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia: they spot a seal with an entanglement mark around her neck. As so often, it is hard to tell if there is still any plastic debris left or if it is a scar from an old entanglement wound and the team prefer to have a closer look. They soon find out that they have met this seal before and that she is what we call a "recapture": a previously rescued seal. She stays calm and relaxed as the rescuers approach, she has met them before and she knows that they are not trying to hurt her. Her baby continues to drink, and once they have confirmed that she is in perfect health, leave her along.
It is a proud moment for the OCN team: this mother and baby would not be alive without us. 🦭

They are smarter than most people give them credit for and they are learning from you being out there nearly every single day doing nothing but making their lives better. Actually I have seen seals in England and California and I don’t doubt they would come for help. These seals probably have more predators bothering them and are much more aggressive and don’t want any human interaction.
The fact that a momma was super chill with them near her pup says a lot. Mom didn’t even growl at them, it was a yawn. 🥰

Animals are smart. They recall that after their awkward encounter with humans their pain was gone. So they associate humans with care.

I don't think association works like that. Association occurs between immediate pain and pleasure. I don't know a sense of pain works.
It just shows that seals like lots of other animals have the ability to remember things. It looks like she's had a good experience with you.
All it takes is your smell and your voice to remind them that you're ok to be around.

I loved this! I had hoped you would one day come across another seal you recognized as one you had saved (I remember you saw 'puffy face' later and looking much healed) and that it was doing well. Unfortunately I think it's better if the seals do run away when there is an attempted rescue. If they get too docile poachers and the like would have a much easier go of it, which we don't want.
@@13vatra You are right. I think it’s much better if animals think that people are not so friendly.
@@13vatra there is a good chance most of the seals distinguish clearly between the crew and others.
Some of the young and the otherwise traumatized may have to learn to do so.
This is different from the usual rescues, and was so sensitively handled............
