This video was awesome. I'm a new subscriber and a beginner sewer and you are truly an inspiration. The fact that you did much of the major construction of this jacket using the serger is absolutely stellar! I love your post-construction commentary and how honest you are about any flaws in your garment as well as lessons learned from previous makes. My sewing circle of friends and I have decided that we're going to 'binge-watch' all your sewing-related videos this weekend!
Well thank you for the kind words and thank you for hoping on board. I am glad to hear that you appreciate my honesty / my approach. I hope your sewing projects are and will go well and once again, thank you.
Well good on you trying new things. Hope it went well with the welt pocket? And yes, I definitely need to be using interfacing and will probably do so for the next iteration. I always appreciate the tips & suggestions.
A few suggestions; sharp, quality scissors; baste the zip before sewing; use a 5/8 seam allowance; don't forget to include seam allowance on every seamed edge; with your slopers, for the most part, you only need half the sloper and cut on folded fabric to ensure symmetry. Great work though and love seeing a man sewing!
Those are all great tips, thank you. I've been hearing more about the importance of a good pair of sheers recently so that is my next investment. I make my sloper different on both side to reflect the difference in arm sizes due to an accident as a child. Thank you again.
A cotton harvester tipped over and fell on top of me. As a result, several nerves at my spine were overstretched or torn and the associated muscle groups never properly developed. I appreciate you asking and thanks for watching.
Well as a somewhat related, southern-born, northern-living man in the western world who has visited the east, I am flattered by your approval. Thanks for watching (and going through the archives).
I have been sewing for about a year now, but I haven't attempted any garments yet. So now I have bought some patterns and the different fabrics required are a little confusing. Could you do a video on fabric types and how you decide what to use, and what can be substituted etc? The jacket I want to make is very similar to yours, so a video on the different types of fabrics, for different types of garments would be so helpful!
That's a good idea. I could definitely do a video of this sort. I will add it to my list. For me, I find biggest difference in fabrics is knits vs. weaves. Something I can get into in the video :) Thanks for the suggestion.
My pleasure. 1 thing I would recommend though is in that first step where I sewed a rectangle, don't sew the two small bits on the end. Just two straight long lines.
@@MarronStone the reason for not seeing the two ends is so that when it is flipped right way round, everything folds neatly into place. It's a bit hard to describe in just words. I recommend trying it with some scraps.
@@CorneliusQuiring ah thanks that does explain it! And I've been working on my first bomber today so I get what you mean. I was just afraid the fabric wouldn't hold and tear/rip.
Tip: - It'd be sooo much simpler, easier & more accurate/symmetrical,if you folded all pieces in 1/2 & did your alterations on just the right or left 1/2,before cutting. That way both right & left sides come out exactly the same - completely symmetrical.🤷
Excellent job! I really enjoyed your energy and gusto! I spend a great deal of time wandering aimlessly around muttering to myself when I sew. Also, what model Singer do you have there? I don't recognize it as one of the classic vintage darlings.
Well thank you and it sounds like you're doing it right muttering & puttering along. 😊 I have a Singer 3102. I read somewhere on it that it is made in Brazil, so who knows what the back story is.

Dude is so great .... I love it when pros and cons are brought to open in sewing.
Your stomach bulging in the jacket is amazing......great work
Thank you.
Gotta love this guy. So entertaining at the same time teaching well.

Nice! It looks so good! I made my first welt pocket trial yesterday... next level for you: interfacing makes some details more durable and neat.

Cornelius Quiring mind if I ask what happened to your arm as a child? I didn’t notice until I read this and now I’m curious. Great video btw!

Im loving the music and the work😍
Thank you!
Great job. Most impressed with your welt pockets.
Well thank you. I have been tweaking and improving my technique. I am almost at a place where I have it down.
Wish I found this yesterday 😂 I was over thinking how to sew those pockets soooo much. But now I know how it's done yay! Thanks! 😄💪
Well I am happy to have been of assistance, even if it was a bit late. I hope your project ended up well none the less.
Wow! I just found you channel! I love men who sew! Well done on this project! Great vid!
I may be biased here, but men who sew are just a bit more sophisticated and in tune with who they are 😋. Thank you.
@@CorneliusQuiring 😁😁😁 good to know!
Left handed and sews I’m subscribing !
Thank you for following along :)
I was expecting classical music while you were sewing 😂.
Tehehe. Put the video on mute, play some classical music and boom you're right! :)
😂
Cornelius you are awesome! Thanks for your video. I am currently making a jacket trying to learn how to put a waist band on properly.
And your music choice was Awesome!
Good luck with your waistband. Thank you for watching and thank you for the thumbs up.
Thanks from Egypt 👍We want to learn more from you.
Thanks for watching and I'm happy you're interested in what I do.
U make this look entertaining and educational... no hiding of flaws, can u redo the pocket 😇... in a very slow motion
Well I am happy you enjoyed what I have to offer. As for the pocket, let me get in touch with the slow mo guys. 😁
After your jogger's video I came here and found it amazing 💙
Oh wonderful. Well I am happy to hear you're enjoying my videos. Thanks for watching.

@@CorneliusQuiring oh thanks ❤️
Hi. Thanks for the video. What are the formulas for calculating the neckline.
Anywhere from 70 - 85% of the neck length, if you're using ribbed knit.
Thank you for showing the process for welt pockets! I have been struggling with a blazer and I could not figure it out through written instructions
My pleasure. 1 thing I would recommend though is in that first step where I sewed a rectangle, don't sew the two small bits on the end. Just two straight long lines.
@@CorneliusQuiring but if you don't sew those bits, how will it close neatly?

Especially with the final top stitching it, will hold wonderfully.
Good video, I do think the jacket would benefit from a good pressing/steaming.
And just give it that finishing touch, you are right.
The one you had on actually looks pretty good just missing a lining.
Well I appreciate your vote of confidence!
wow this is awesome! inspired me to make my own clothes again and use my sewing machine! project runway realness

it could use some lining. the pockets are very well done
Amen. I made a second, white one right after this one with a beautiful floral lining.
Guy looks like a Jame Bond villian. (who sews)
Be wary of a man that wields a needle. 😏
What are you using for marking your lines? Is it chalk?
It is. It's called a tailor's chalk.
How did you end the seams on the ribbing on the neck??
serging.
Hey u , thank u for the lesson. Could make video about shirt collar?plz
I am happy to hear it. And good news, I have made a video all about collars. You can see it here: ruclips.net/video/IHsG-7Rr1l0/видео.html
