    Just so that fellow viewers are aware, you do NOT have to pull apart you fave clothes to copy them into a pattern. There are plenty of videos here on youtube showing you how to lay various items out to get accurate tracings of the pieces involved. I've been doing so with all my fave pieces so that I can move from garment buying to making my own items from carefully sourced materials or materials i have woven or spun myself.
    Thinking you have to pull apart seams of your fave clothes is certainly enough to scare most people off of this idea, and I just want everyone to know that's not a necessary step at all. :)

    Something I recently tried was decondstructing an old, large pair of jeans, ones with a lot of wear in them, then I used this raw denim to cut my own pattern. This left my new pair with a lot of unique marks, (beach patterns, pocket marks) you should try it, the used denim is much easier to sew. Love the vid btw.

      If you have access to charity thrift shop clearance centers you buy by the pound . Find as large a pair as possible and n a condition that suits your taste. I get 40+waist. If you want 2 repair any defects it is easier to do at the flat stage before u sew up. Your can also decorate like the Japanese at this stage.

    Just circled back around to this, noticed- you never posted a part 2! If you haven't got a new machine by now, I highly recommend sinking a few grand into a used-but-still-young Bernina. Those things are absolute beasts, but still compact and have a variety of functions, like what you're used to from a domestic machine. Unless you're getting into production, I've never found the industrial ones to be worth the space and limits.

    Damn this video is a massive coincidence for me. I was watching a video on how to make jeans from scratch yesterday or the day before, I wanted to see the full process. The dude that made them had quite a fancy setup so I went on Amazon to look for a heavy duty sewing machine and came across that exact Singer which had, to say the least, quite mixed reviews on it. A few days later you cover both in one video, just crazy.

    • @GearedTowardGear
      @GearedTowardGear  5 лет назад +7

      Damn haha well glad the stars aligned on this one. I still think my machine is solid for a domestic machine- had mine for about 4 years. What kind of needle were you using? For a heavy weight denim you could use a jeans needle or even a leather needle (has a really sharp point) , makes it easier for the machine to sew since it doesn't have to use too much force to get trough the fabric even with multiple layers. + you won't get that terrifying zooming sound haha. besides that, I love seeing how you construct this piece. It's so different from how I learn it at school but it seems to work much better. I did the fly when the pant's were nearly finished. oh boy that's a disaster. I also really loved the nyc scenery. Can't wait to get there :) have a good day.

    A couple questions: first off how much do all the materials cost that go into making a pair of jeans? (Fabric zippers rivets ect) second what types of tools do you need? And finally how long does it take you to make a single pair?

    Zen master, haha with all of that effort and not being able to finish, you didn't lose your cool (at least on camera ha). I'm glad I watched though because obviously that machine is not as "heavy duty" as I would want, so will save up for a more powerful machine. I hope you are continuing to create, your love for the craft is obvious, and it is a very difficult task.

    It looks like you might need a denim sewing needle. It will make sure you can get through all the layers and so you dont have to "hand crank" Btw i love patti smith. Love the vid!

    Hey dude! Loved your video. Funny thing is I was really waiting to see if your machine would be able to get through that denim. When I saw you take it apart I said oh no! My first machine was a janome hd3000 spent about $500.00 on it but i knew i needed a starter machine and i knew many places had cheaper versions but i knew after sewing a few things I would take it up a few notches and I would want to sew all types of different attire using different fabrics so I decided to dive right in and purchase something industrial rather than have to buy a better machine later on. It's an awesome industrial machine and goes through 12 layers of denim and even sews leather. Have you upgraded since this video? If so what did you upgrade to? You did a great job using that muslin fabric. By the way I also wanted to let you know since you are right in New York that I'm in New Jersey and we have a great fabric store in east orange . It's called Central Fabrics. Great prices also. And we also have one called Halsey Fabrics located on Halsey st and it's about 5 minutes from Newark Penn station. We have different fabric stores but these 2 are my favorite. That was just an FYI. Good luck! Also did you ever get to sew the jeans to your perfection?

    You gotta invest in an industrial! They're not even that expensive if you find the right one, such as the brand Highlead, which seem decent from my experience.

    I was amazed you actually got that far on the denim. Denim is tough to sew together if the machine isn’t powerful enough to handle it.

    Avery I hope you can invest in an industrial machine and a serger someday. I have an industrial Juki and a domestic Brother serger and they get me through every garment project I've put them through. But keep that Singer if it handles doing buttonholes on the waistline of denim (I have another domestic machine just for buttonholes because it does them so well). Most domestic machines will have a hard time with 13 ounce denim especially topstitching so many layers, the threads will not look right once sewn as you've noticed. You can be more precise with speed and tension with an industrial machine and with a size 16 needle you'll be able to go through 5 layers of denim like butter. Also cut the waistline long ways with the grain of the fabric and/or use fusible interfacing to keep it from stretching. I'm not sure how thick the thread you're using is but use Tex 60 or higher for that denim so it looks better and it's stronger. I wanted to share some things I've learned through trial and error because I'd love to see your DIY projects be the best they can be and I cringe when I see you serging with a zig-zag stitch lol. You're awesome keep it up!

      Thank you for sharing your experience and advice Ricky. Really goes a long way. Which model do you have? NYC craigslist is full of 8700s and 5550s. Wouldn't mind a serger at all either. Man, I was bummed toying with my bobbin tension (which you aren't even supposed to change on my machine), timing, needles etc. when I knew an industrial machine could bust right through it. Word, I never knew to cut the waistband perpendicularly. That means I wouldn't need two pattern pieces either! Win win. Lmfao about the zigzag. My machine has an overlock too which does the job but was coming out even worse. Take care man.

      @@GearedTowardGear Mine is the Juki DDL-8700. 8700s and 5550s are pretty much the same machine. The only real differences are 8700s are made in their manufacturing facilities in China (so brand new they are like $100-$200 cheaper). 5550s are made in Japan and Juki is from Japan. I bought mine brand new and have owned it for two years. It has never given me any trouble. I bought Juki because its the same one I used in school but another great company is Brother. My serger is the Juki MO-654DE which has also done me great. And I totally felt your pain when you were messing with your machine so I know you will be very glad to upgrade.

    I have a similar singer and break it all the time trying to see denim. But it’s mainly what I deal with aha, I definitely need an upgrade too. This was Ana amazing video, very inspiring. It makes me want to make a pair of chambray, or some sort of lightweight brushed twill pants.. hmm 🤔

      Appreciate you. I made a video a while back on skin care. I just keep it gentle day & night cleansing, get some sun but use sunscreen, eat clean, stay active. I've enjoyed the shift to a safety razor too. No real research backing that switch though. Hair I condition as much as I want but infrequently use shampoo. Also dig a few drops of oil or salt spray depending on hair type. Take this all with a grain of salt though because I'm not at alllll an expert.
