Just so that fellow viewers are aware, you do NOT have to pull apart you fave clothes to copy them into a pattern. There are plenty of videos here on youtube showing you how to lay various items out to get accurate tracings of the pieces involved. I've been doing so with all my fave pieces so that I can move from garment buying to making my own items from carefully sourced materials or materials i have woven or spun myself. Thinking you have to pull apart seams of your fave clothes is certainly enough to scare most people off of this idea, and I just want everyone to know that's not a necessary step at all. :)

Yeah man thank you. Have been eyeing craigslist in the city for a while now, but didn't want to give up on my domestic machine just for the sake of something fancier. It looks like it may be the time.
@@GearedTowardGear Idk.if you have but also check out the older single stitch domestic singers like the 305s, they have a beautiful stitch and are quite beefy being all cast aluminum and iron and quite cheap too.
Something I recently tried was decondstructing an old, large pair of jeans, ones with a lot of wear in them, then I used this raw denim to cut my own pattern. This left my new pair with a lot of unique marks, (beach patterns, pocket marks) you should try it, the used denim is much easier to sew. Love the vid btw.

And I love how you soberly discuss it as such. You don’t seem discouraged! It reminds us to not get frustrated by complications in the discovery phase, and keep pressing through. Thank you!
Damn this video is a massive coincidence for me. I was watching a video on how to make jeans from scratch yesterday or the day before, I wanted to see the full process. The dude that made them had quite a fancy setup so I went on Amazon to look for a heavy duty sewing machine and came across that exact Singer which had, to say the least, quite mixed reviews on it. A few days later you cover both in one video, just crazy.
Damn haha well glad the stars aligned on this one. I still think my machine is solid for a domestic machine- had mine for about 4 years. I've seen others work some magic with theirs and still feel a bit like there is a way to fix mine up. With that being said, I think I'll be upgrading shortly.
Its definitely worth the dime. I like to make handbags and this machine impressed me! It will plug through some pretty serious stuff if you do things correctly
kinda late but i’ve purchased so many singer machines for different purposes and not one of them lasts longer than 3 months of normal use, if you’re looking for a good machine that’ll last a long time i’d recommend the bernina b250
Appreciate you. I made a video a while back on skin care. I just keep it gentle day & night cleansing, get some sun but use sunscreen, eat clean, stay active. I've enjoyed the shift to a safety razor too. No real research backing that switch though. Hair I condition as much as I want but infrequently use shampoo. Also dig a few drops of oil or salt spray depending on hair type. Take this all with a grain of salt though because I'm not at alllll an expert.
Would highly recommend investing in a new sewing machine. I own a juki and it’s such a great and powerful machine when it comes to sewing through layers of thick materials such as denim!
If you’re new, please dont pull apart your clothes. As a beginner, just tracing is good enough, but make sure the back pieces are different from the front.
Modern Singer machines are awful because they have made sure to reduce the quality of all their parts to reduce costs. The heavy duty line is also a low duty model because of that. It might have stronger engine but since everything else is plastic the machine flexes everywhere it shouldn’t. Sadly the same parent company that owns Singer now also own Pfaff and Husqvarna so their quality is now suffering as well. I can recommend the Janome EasyJeans 1800 that I own, but it is pricier than singer. Also Juki, Brother, Bernina and BabyLock have retained their quality so they are also good options. Otherwise a refurbished Husqvarna and Pfaff from early 2000 and back are good cheep options.
I've always wanted to make my own shirts and jeans as store bought ones are never quite perfect, but I've never got past that stage. Watching this video has taught me so much in a short space of time that I'm actually going to do it. This was an easy sub and I hope you still make more videos as I'm looking forward to watching and learning. Thank you.
In the middle of multiple sewing projects and now you’ve inspired me to take the little time I have to deconstruct and construct a pair of jeans. Yayyyy!!
@@q-isforqcumber6004 actually this machine is supposed to be able to go through 8-10 layers of denim and leather but I would say his machine has come to the end of its life now

after finishing my fashion course, two mates and I invested in a Juki industrial sewing machine. I can't recommend it enough! Keep it up love from Australia :)
It looks like you might need a denim sewing needle. It will make sure you can get through all the layers and so you dont have to "hand crank" Btw i love patti smith. Love the vid!
Hey man your doing great this is the first video I’ve seen from your channel a new machine bro that’s the optimal decision the bulk gets to be heavy I’m machines are design for specific jobs keep going man you have supporters
If you'd like to try a different fabric, I recommend wool gabardine, or maybe even just a fishbone twill weave. Sewing multiple layers of mid-weight wool shouldn't be too hard for your machine. I think if you went with either of those, you could do a pleated front for a cool combination of a jean silhouette and a suit pant :-)
Speaking of new sewing machines, have you considered a vintage one?? Mid to late 60s machines, like Singer 237, has zigzag, and some could make button holes. You could find a great one for as little as US 80$. Keep them clean, and oil, and they would be in your family for generations...
I just found your channel recently because I’m going to attempt to make a pair of trousers. I’m sad to see you don’t have any recent videos posted I love you after one video lol hope you’re going alright and still making!!!
If you havent bought your new machine and still hu ting on Craigs List look for an industrial juki t2010q machine. Great for thick textiles and thinner.
Very disappointing at the end. Maybe you should have mentioned a part two to the video. Maybe go to a fashion university and ask to use their industrial machine for a part two of the project.
A suggestion Avery, get a Juki TL, Brother PQ, or Janome 1600p/HD9 straight stitcher-semi industrial and will handle these heavy denim/leather/fabric jobs with ease. No need to go full industrial as you're not sewing all day everyday production
Gained a new subscriber. Thanks for the inspiration to take it back to a basic Singer HD. Going from footwear to clothing. Will be a long learning process. Excited to start the journey with my Wife. Thank you again comrade. .
I hope you got a better sewing machine than that singer "heavy duty" plastic fantastic.....an old industrial walking foot like a singer 111w155 would take care of those 13 oz denim layers
If you get an industrial machine it will plow through most fabric/layers, including your fingers, but once you work with one you'll never want to sew with anything else again.
Instead of muslin fabric, sometimes I use a thrift store flat sheet. Twin usually works fine. Depending on where you are used sheets are about half the price of muslin fabric. This is not always possible, but it is an idea.
Just circled back around to this, noticed- you never posted a part 2! If you haven't got a new machine by now, I highly recommend sinking a few grand into a used-but-still-young Bernina. Those things are absolute beasts, but still compact and have a variety of functions, like what you're used to from a domestic machine. Unless you're getting into production, I've never found the industrial ones to be worth the space and limits.
Hey, Thanks for the great videos! What Singer HD model are you using? And any issues? I just returned the Singer HD 6700C I just bought grrrr, unfortunately.
i find that if i'm not in that sewing head then i have to put the project aside for a time. otherwise it's a lot of tears, frustration, ruined fabric, and wasted time.
It'd be really dope to see you finish off the jeans with a machine that double stitches and chain stitches. The double stitching will definitely reinforce the denim and will fade beautifully over time as you wear the jeans (especially the inseam), and chain stitching the leg opening is a really subtle but gorgeous detail :-)

A couple questions: first off how much do all the materials cost that go into making a pair of jeans? (Fabric zippers rivets ect) second what types of tools do you need? And finally how long does it take you to make a single pair?
my singer HD 4452 has no issues with even doing beltloops on my 13oz levis. and thats like 8 layers on zig zag....anytime the machine couldn't make a stitch you just hand crank to top and then start again. i know yours is the 4423 base on only having S1 blue stitches but should be same motor. also, have you removed the bobbin case in the past? if so i had an issue where i didn't install it correctly and had lots of issues with making a stitch and birds nests. dumb question but are you pulling bobbin thread up after changing bobbin? i know i had issues if the bobbin wasn't mounted in the case right and thread brought into hook race. you should have no issues with sewing 12-13 oz denim with a denim needle even with multiple layers. but if using store bought "jeans thread" like gutermann, you should be using at least a 100/16 denim needle if not a 110/18. but i usually can use tex 60-80 with a 100/16 needle, but denim needle is needed.
You need a more heavy duty machine to sewing with thicker fabrics. They don't make sewing machines like they used to. I have two 1950s sewing machines and I LOVE them.
I see that many people are telling you to buy a industrial machine, and Idk if you already did but I have a pair of Jack sewing machines (5 thread overlock n straight stitch), they are fantastic and cheap. I brought them a year ago and I love them! They cost me like 1200 dlls new. I feel like I'm doing an ad but its just a recommendation! Working with an industrial sewing machine makes life so much easier
0:01 Great, but if you lived in LA, that sky behind you would be blue, and you’d be wearing only a shirt on your way to the fabric district in downtown Los Angeles. 6:10 bruh, we own the same sewing machine AND iron. 👍
This sewing machine is garbage. You need a real industrial machine or at least something like Singer 15K And I have to tell you that your job is amazing if you never tried it before. Congratulations!!!
What did you decide regarding a more powerful sewing machine? What model is that Singer in the video? I was considering buying a Singer 4452, it looks like yours? I sew only heavy denim and canvas type material.
Ok wonderful...you got my esteem going....but to be honest I have been punk stitching for decades now. The only thing that works is something very hard to cut like fishing line. Then you can have some skater punk jeans that won't rip. On the other hand... I have these Helikon pants with Verastretch... totally showing me the way on how to ... add suspension to a tight military form.... I am not short... those people are not my friends... I need pants... a lot. I think they have something to show us. You can add some suspension and keep the snap off by adding it to the back and top of the waistband.. make that flex ever so... and that will keep your spread from ripping up your chaffs. Then, they add it downwards and the very top of the pant legs to under the shorts line ever so. Sitting down causes the chaff to snap, so the back must be loose to catch it, and snapping the knee too.
You need a singer 15-91 bro. Theyre vintage but built like a tank. Affordable and that shit will even go through leather like butter. Continue the project then!
I know... I tried that machine for a few month and then I’ve decided to go vintage! I’ve never come back since... you should try Singer 401 or a necchi supernova. They’re my absolute favourite ( sturdy all metal inside machines) and they can deal with many layers. Also the singer 201 is amazinggggg.
I think you might have blown your timing on the machine. I was a rigger in the military and had to go to sewing machine maintenance school. Nice work! You might try to find a used Juki machine somewhere.
Zen master, haha with all of that effort and not being able to finish, you didn't lose your cool (at least on camera ha). I'm glad I watched though because obviously that machine is not as "heavy duty" as I would want, so will save up for a more powerful machine. I hope you are continuing to create, your love for the craft is obvious, and it is a very difficult task.
A couple of weeks ago I could no longer find a pair of shorts with cargo pockets. A few minutes ago I thought "I'm going to look up a video on men's pants patterns." I stumbled upon this channel to watch a guy that has talent and over a 108K subs. I'm not alone. I always enjoy watching and listening to talented people. Great video. I might try to rip apart the seams on an old pair of threadbare shorts that I like and use them as a pattern.
I have a slightly better singer than yours, but I have sewn with this one you have. You HAVE to oil your machine every week if you use it every day, the machine will jam if left unserviced. I sew a lot of denim, and besides the occasional broken needle, I don't find problems with the stitching. Top stitching is not always the nicest, but the imperfections are minuscule.
this was very informative thank you! quick question- if you want to start a fashion business is it better to live in new york since the fashion shows are there and i imagine it is easier to make contacts? i loved you video btw :)
I started on the same machine and it is not made for intense sewing such as making jeans. It’s the machine not you, try to get a juki-ddl5550 you won’t have any issues with the stitching.
You ask too much from a simple home sewing machine... you need an industrial one because they are more powerful ,even though they came by categoryes ...

you should have no issues with sewing 12-13 oz denim with a denim needle even with multiple layers. but if using store bought "jeans thread" like gutermann, you should be using at least a 100/16 denim needle if not a 110/18. but i usually can use tex 60-80 with a 100/16 needle, but denim needle is needed.
your Young Get To THE POINT as Judge Judy would say........ you seem like a GREAT Young Man in the industry
You need a more heavy duty machine to sewing with thicker fabrics. They don't make sewing machines like they used to. I have two 1950s sewing machines and I LOVE them.
I personally like beige colored jeans, or black jeans. Those Muslin pants look good on you. Good fit and material! Congrats!!
See the plastic slotted screw turn it counterclockwise 1/2 turn. I have the same machine and I agree it sucks. Singer usually is ok.
Hey! I know this video is 3 years ago. But I was wondering what model is this singer because I just purchased one and want to know if I got the same.
I just bought that same sewing machine. Makes me sad that it couldn’t finish the job for you.
I might try to rip apart the seams on an old pair of threadbare shorts that I like and use them as a pattern.
the balls to try to make jeans with that thick of an ounce without a serger machine is the kinda confidence I need in life lmao
You need an serger
I know your frustrations, it really is a lot of time and work and it takes so much patience. I enjoyed this video, thank you :)
I’m a new designer and I loved watching this, your well spoken and not for a second did I fast forward. Thank you for this video I’m inspired to make some for my son!
how long does it take to make a simple pants from linen, cotton etc.. for a bigenner , 2 hours , I heard that , and after doing 3 or 5 pants how fast will it take.. an hour?
Omg ily I love how you explain everything! You can tell this is your passion much love from CA
is that kenshi music i hear in the BGM? Also, I have a brother 9285... can that handle denim or leather at all? thnx!
