This would be huge! I like that my xbox has some BC but so many games, especially old sports games and others get ignored bc of licensing issues. So tired of that legal speed bump. We own it, should be able to play it
They could do native backwards compatibility for ps3 and ps2 silver disc's, but not ps1 or ps2 blue disc, only because the ps5 has no cd laser, unless they want to release a cd peripheral for ps1 and ps2 blue discs
I don't understand why ps don't let us download old ps3 games like gt4 ect maybe it's a technical problem but they would get more people to pay for the better ps online to be able to use it and get more profit to make the company even bigger

I doubt they would add the cell processor somehow into the PS5 Pro, but I guess.they could, but not practical. That’s my thought process.

I think they might do digital ps3 backward compat but I highly doubt your ps3 discs will work. I COULD be wrong but if that’s the case why do PS2 discs not currently work??? Clearly sony doesn’t care about your discs.
They'd probably just read the licenses on the PS3 disc like they do for PS4 and PS5. I'm not sure how it works on PS1 and PS2 but there might not be a license to install the game
In order to make PS3 games look. Good or playable. They are going have to do some major updates. Because I don't think the graphics will stand up on the PS5.
I’d be surprised if this is real. If it is hopefully it’s not paywalled by the higher tier PS+ or a paid app. Either way I wonder if this will discourage developers from remastering/porting games to PS5.
I feel like they would implement full reverse compatibility on the PS5 Pro. Think about it, that’s the only justification they would have to put all of this time and effort into making it possible. And with GTA 6 coming out they can capitalize on that hype train by having all of the GTA games playable on the PS5 (without the definitive collection)
This would carried out by a mix of " Native Souce" and Emulation. To help hit a locked 30FPS with the chance of a Patch to roll out to add in 60fps and upscale to 1440p like Sony done in the oast for Retro titles.
It wouldn't be native. Sony isn't going to get anyone to start manufacturing cell processors again. Even if it runs the discs (which I doubt) it would still be emulation
It would go the route of the PS3 (2.0) model. It has a built in decoder/emulator to help bypass security codes which prevent a handful of PS2 and PS1 games.from one on the PS3 Fat. So it still being played from the Native Disc but also being decoded in real time. And will only work as long as the Disc is in.
I could see it being similar to how Xbox does it. Where the disc serves as an authentication key, that grants you access to an emulated version of the game for download.
I want this so much. I don't have any ps3 games. But ps3 games are probably quite cheap. I know they were in the past. Dante's inferno, Lego star wars the complete saga and a lot others. I'm not paying for premium to play those.
This is not my opinion, however, it is also a possibility that he was making it up, and through coincidence it was inevitable. For example, remakes will eventually be obsolete, as an AGI will be able to remake any game for every generation without developers. Obviously it's inevitable, eventually.
That is never gonna happen. Allowing to run old discs would require a general 100% (or nearly) compatible emulator; very difficult to do for both the PS2 and PS3 - and there is zero economic incentive for Sony to do this. It would be a huge investment, and zero return on it. Any backwards compatibility will therefore be limited to old games being made available as downloads that you have to buy, as is the case today with PS1 and PS2 games. There is simply no economic case for Sony to invest a lot of effort into implementing support for what is clearly a niche use-case. Unless they see it valuable enough as a marketing move... other than that, I don't see why they would want to do this.
Ps5 can play all backwards PlayStation games. If they wanted to on emulation but they created the PlayStation store. And all its tiers. Which now is so exspensive. With basic. PlayStation plus. Is now 80$ for the year. And rest of the tiers going up over $100 and the. Price of a game is $100. Doesn't include dlc or any add ons. In these changing times where everything is expensive Sony needs to give us backwards compatible thank you for understanding Sony. Thanks for the great games
There's no reason why it shouldn't play our physical games ! My 4k player plays disks from the 80's so lol. I have 300 plus ps3 games I'd love to play them without having 100 consoles laying around . I don't stream or play my games online i play offline only .
I like the convenience of everything on 1 console but I still have my old original hardware including a launch edition fully bc ps3 so i have 5 gen of sony between 2 consoles and people act like its too hard to just turn on an older console. If its gonna boost the frame rate or a graphic bump like the series x does on some games thats cool. But are we as humans so spoiled and lazy we cant just use the original hardware? thats pathetic.
If Sony makes the investment necessary to add PS3 compatibility, it's not going to be so we can play the games we already have. They'd much rather prefer to sell them to us again.
I hope this is true. PS3s are breaking down. I have 3 PS3s and two of them broke down at the same time, and the third, i don't want to risk. its some faulty soddering issue i hear.

Don’t get your hopes up they would never let physical discs work on PS5, they would only upsell PS3 games on store
I hope its True! Even tho it doesn't matter to me because i still have the OG Backwards PS3 and 1, 2 &4 😂... But i hope its read off the disc because to me that's true backwards compatibility, i dont like this put the disc in download a whole game even tho its right there on the disc and you need to be online is wack.
I hope Sony really understands how many people really want PS1/2/3 disc compatibility, it could be a huge seller for them if they manage to get it working.
Emulation? Maybe. Natively running? No. The arhcitectures are super different, what are y'all saying 😭
Welcomed morning news. Albuquerque, NM
Be real funny if this happens and it turns out my ps3 discs have degraded.
Sony be like: why backwards compatible if I could sell you the ports of games you already have?
In order to make PS3 games look. Good or playable. They are going have to do some major updates. Because I don't think the graphics will stand up on the PS5.
I’d be surprised if this is real. If it is hopefully it’s not paywalled by the higher tier PS+ or a paid app.
Either way I wonder if this will discourage developers from remastering/porting games to PS5.
If it’s real, I bet it’s exclusive to the PS5 Pro.
@butterman2409 why would they lock it to the smallest install base? 🤦♂️
Id love to pop GT5 and 6 into my ps5 tbat would make it my favorite console of all time tbh
I’d finally be able to play all Metal Gear games, including Metal Gear Rising. Oh, and Sonic Unleashed and Silent Hill.
Gosh, I miss Kevin Butler's SONY commercial shenanigans! 😅
I hope this is true I would love to play my PS3 games on PS5
I feel like they would implement full reverse compatibility on the PS5 Pro. Think about it, that’s the only justification they would have to put all of this time and effort into making it possible. And with GTA 6 coming out they can capitalize on that hype train by having all of the GTA games playable on the PS5 (without the definitive collection)
This would carried out by a mix of " Native Souce" and Emulation. To help hit a locked 30FPS with the chance of a Patch to roll out to add in 60fps and upscale to 1440p like Sony done in the oast for Retro titles.
As long as i can play GTA 4 and SSX 2012, ill be happy.
I hope this is true and it works with physical copies, I would hate having to buy a digital copy of a game I already own.
That would the selling point of the PS5 Pro: 8K60fps for PS3/PS2/PS1 games.
I have tons on ps2 Games I would love to play again
FGUK IS BACK!!💪🏽
I think it was always an oversight maybe deliberate that this wasn't in there from the get go. I'll believe it when I see it though.
I think it is emulation, not native
@@fattiger6957I’d much rather emulate than stream
@@alexcompton314 Yeah, that's true. Emulation could be great, depending on how much time and money Sony wants to put into it.
I use my PS3 more than my PS5 but this would be WILD. Older games just hit better
Too late for that Sony. I already have jailbroken PS3 and PS2 with almost entire libraries so... We dont need it at this point.
If they do this omfg that would be amazing
I want ps3 toys story 3 on ps5 😭🙏
I want this so much. I don't have any ps3 games. But ps3 games are probably quite cheap. I know they were in the past. Dante's inferno, Lego star wars the complete saga and a lot others. I'm not paying for premium to play those.
Great video
This is not my opinion, however, it is also a possibility that he was making it up, and through coincidence it was inevitable. For example, remakes will eventually be obsolete, as an AGI will be able to remake any game for every generation without developers. Obviously it's inevitable, eventually.
I want full PS library backwards compatibility on PS5, it automatically would win hands down
Exactly! It’s just like how Microsoft handles really well on the series x
This would give a lot of us a reason to use our PS5s ;p
If this happens, they should let us access our ps3 digital library aswell.
I hope get ps1 and ps2 work to by time i get ps5
Would've been nice if they just use RPCS3 or something. Might help speed up development.
I would love this to be true but I have serious doubts.
I just know one thing, if PS3 disks end up being playable natively on the PS5, I might just buy one
I bought black ops2 of the hopes for backwards compatibility
Nice title to the video
If they make this happen then you could have Every Final Fantasy game on PS5 !!
I hope this is true. I still have my ps3 but man does it run slow. Would love just to have one console to play them all
I feel like Nostradamus.. I been saying ps5 is like a souped up ps3
Also I doubt they're going to give any PS3 games a performance boost on PS5 they're probably going to run worse than you remember
