He set the bar so high with 2 that it whooped every subsequent Spidey movie's ass too. It's really hard to believe that it could possibly be topped at this point with the MCU version being a pale comparison in every measure as a character.
I actually tear up at that scene. They could of exposed him, taken pics, ran to the media, but they didnt. They swore to keep his secret because he is needed as a hero.
I'm sure there's an explanation similar to a "what if...?" Maybe Doc ock's tentacles didn't listen to him at the river which lead to a "branch" in timeline. Which resulted to the evil doc ock we see in NWH trailer.
@@safe4547 some video abt this sets up like “what if he’s a double agent and the green goblin stops the spell to send them back, but dock ock turns on goblin and uses science to make a multiverse portal for the other spider men” i thought that was cool tbh
I'm pretty sure those are just some branching multiverse's Doc Ock, it's just played by Alfred Molina (hence why different cloack and hairstyle). The same with potential Dafoe's Green Goblin, Electro, and Tobey's and Garfield's Spidey. Sony and MCU probably reached the deal that MCU can use those characters, just not the exact characters as their film counterpart (sorry, if that explanations a bit confusing, but you get the point right?)
Me too. He didn’t fail us, he provided us with tons of meme content and one of the greatest orchestral pieces ever used in a movie (the Black Suit theme).
This movie doesn’t feel like a modern superhero movie. And I mean that as the highest complement. What a masterpiece. This is one of the best movies ever made as far as I’m concerned
I feel you, it doesnt feel like messy Hollywood Blockbusters with BIG VFX...it feels sincere and simple, plus the Great emotional acting and acting in general; Basically the opposite of Marvel Studios
Facundo Peluffo Ikr I was 6 when I saw it in theaters and it legit changed my entire outlook on filmmaking and along with the first movie planted the seed of aspiring to be a film director and it continues with the marvel movies of today such as James Gunn with Guardians and Taika Waititi with Thor Ragnarok
Spider-Man’s character made me want to be a good person no matter what and that mistakes are part of being human. Spider man is inspirational with the spider and the man part.
@@Abe-Lau me too the classic suit is overrated , I really like the advanced suit much better (most people are blinded by nostalgia and I hate that a lot!!)
Same bro. I’m 24 I dressed as Spider-Man for Halloween and had the themed birthday party for like 4 years in a row. My brother actually had a black Spider-Man suit he wore literally every day for 2 years until it actually broke.
just a stupid thing I noticed but mj’s play is actually “the importance of being ernest” by Oscar Wilde which literally talks about a man who hides his real identity in order to appeal to the women he wants so in a way the play represents Peter and mj’s situation
This movie has so many details like that. The scene where Ock's wife told him to sleep, Peter's line was: "Did Bernoulli sleep when he discovered the curve of quickest descent?" Like...swinging curves. Little details to love in this film.
I kinda figured that too, cause when I heard some of the lines in the scenes where they show the play I thought “wait, that sounds like someone” and it is, it’s about their relationship
Also: the Uncle Ben scene encompasses what makes Spider-Man a great character. Whereas the Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland (mostly Holland) are basically just selfish and only care about themselves. Tobey’s Spider-Man is just perfect though. Enough self doubt and worry to make him believable, but he also still has that idealistic streak that pushes him out of that. Spider-Man is the Superman of the Marvel universe.
This is balls on a youtuber. This video is perfectly acted, perfectly cheesy, perfectly acted. Every aspiring youtuber needs to understand why this video works.
Totally Not Mark!!! I just recently started binging your vids man, its great seeing you like HiTop too! I love some of the spiderman comparisons you to in your DB videos
Totally Not Mark it's great seeing you here for this in-depth video essay for Spider-Man 2,you really need to make Spider-Man video simaller to our Dragon Ball Character videos
Spider-Man 1: Responsibility. - Take responsibility for your mistakes. Spider-Man 2: Choice. - Choose to do what is right, even if it means sacrificing something for the sake of your destiny. Spider-Man 3: Forgiveness. - Forgive people for their mistakes. Revenge is never the answer. This is Peter's arc through all 3 films and it is so beautiful. All 3 movies have crucial moral lessons that were imprinted on children and adults worldwide, moving them to their cores, leaving them with some sort of lesson to implant into their own lives. Raimi didn't just make these movies for the sake of making them, like Jon Watts, he made them vessels to a greater lesson, a greater meaning, an immortal existence. These movies embody the classic Judeo-Christian values we are taught as children. That is where this trilogy excels and manages to stand out so brightly against the rest, the new movies are sterile they have no gravitas, emotion, weight, maturity, and lesson. Whenever I think of these movies, I am moved. I tear up and think of the messages they send, the characters in the film that embody us, the humans that are impacted, the journey, and the conclusion of these stories, and the future that lies ahead for them. A big part of this is Danny Elfman and Christopher Young's music, it is so fucking beautiful and it is enhanced by Raimi's direction. If a movie can make you cry nearly two decades later, that's not nostalgia, that's called a good movie.
The ending for Spider-Man 2 is the best for me. As much it ends on a triumphant ending for Spider-Man, the look of Mary Jane at the end is haunting and expresses so much.
What's your interpretation ? I always felt it was meant to be a glimpse at the "MJ anxiously waits for Peter to hopefully come back alive" that becomes her routine in the comics later on. One of their major point of contention as well, but it seems like he quite never addressed that in the sequel, for some reason. Then again, there's probably lots he was planning for in the sequel that he ended up not being able to do, sadly.
@@RioFordays True. Avi screwed Raimi up. SM3 was gonna be about sandman, vulture, and MJ's life being shit now instead of Peter, still hoping that he comes back alive everytime he goes out, and Harry would be saved for another film, we would just watch him descend into insanity
We need more Superhero Movies like this. Honest, emotionally complex, and artistically driven. We need to allow filmmakers to put everything they have into a film and not rush them to keep up with an ongoing neverending franchise
I don’t have a high opinion on most of the MCU. I like a few of the movies but most I just don’t care about... I loved his video on Guardians of the Galaxy. And I loved that movie (and its sequel). I sometimes wish he’d do more analyses of the MCU movies to reveal something I’m missing/not understanding, but sometimes I wonder if there’s just not much to work with for the kinds of videos he wants to make. Which I’m ultimately fine with, but it does leave questions unanswered for me.
The chocolate cake scene is probably my most favorite scene from any piece of media ever. Life is hard, and sometimes, you wanna give up. But a single act of kindness can be enough to keep you going. And that’s beautiful to me.
@@omalleycaboose5937 Explain why his wife is necessary to the plot. Hell, explain how he goes from tortured soul to quippy bad guy who doesn't even make good quips back to tortured soul. I'm not against quippy villains, but his joking attitude during him grabbing Aunt May and bits of the train scene seem rather off from that character. He's definitely the most serious villain, but that's not saying much either. I don't mind his goofiness, but I would have preferred a more serious villain who sees Spider-Man as a annoyance. Like the comics. He is good otherwise, I just was mainly referring to the Goblins and Venom.
@@khayree7929 Why does it matter? People like different things. Just like people are biased towards the MCU Spider-Man, HiTop is biased towards Raimi's Spider-Man.

GamerThief XP The MCU is good, but I honestly think that most (not every) Phase 3 movies are kinda bland, unoriginal, and feel kinda the same. I‘m one of those people who prefer Phase 1 over Phase 3. and yeah I know about the Sony deal. Sony has to screw up Spider-Man once again.
I love how this film actually shows the people Spider-Man is saving! That’s something superhero movies these days are missing. That’s why Endgame’s final battle was so weak. It was all fan service, but we didn’t see who the Avengers were fighting for.
@James Sturm Not really a dumb question, when I'm genuinely curious about your thoughts. But hey, at least you get to enjoy your high horse because you clearly feel superior over me, a "Smooth brain" by your definition.
One of the best details I love that’s always overlooked is when Harry finds out that Spider-Man is Peter, he accuses peter of murdering his father. Rather than explain that his father was the green goblin and that he tried to kill peter and killed himself by accident, he chose to respect Norman’s wishes and kept those details to himself, at the cost of ruining his relationship with Harry. That level of development and maturity just goes to show how Peter as a character has evolved into one of the best in cinematic history. Sam Raimi was way ahead of his time and is one of the best directors of all time.
"He whooped the first one's ass" Considering how fantastic is the first spider man, it tells how fucking awesome spiderman 2 is. Spiderman 2 is one of if not greatest superhero movie and one of the most important movies in my life. Thank you for this wonderful video on my potential favorite movie. 🕷
Yeah, like the saving a kid from the burning house or the train scene. Even when in the fire scene he saved her as Peter Parker with no power, the same goes for the train scene even though he already got his powers back he still saved them as Peter Parker. It feels like this is a movie about a good guy that happened to be a super hero rather than a super hero that happened to be a good guy
Also I hate when people makes fun of Tobey’s face in those emotional scene. I mean ugly emotion HAS to be ugly, unlike movies today where even when the scene that should’ve been emotional but it’s just not good enough because they tried to looks “cool”
I was in college when this movie came out. I was already somewhat an adult and this movie hit me hard with feels. No any other superhero movie since then could replicate that.

I remember leaving the cinema knowing I'd seen something special.. And I was 18 at the time.. The fact the movie really hasn't been surpassed even to this day when it comes to wow factor just proves how good it was
This movie will be remembered through the ages. Specially thanks for the over saturation of superheroes in modern day. MCU films are ok, but none of them are as human as this.
This past year -- hell, these past 6 months -- have been the hardest 6 months of my entire 23.5 years of life. In that timespan, I've had to move cities twice, lose my girlfriend of 5 years, put down 2 of my pets, lost my childhood dream job, and just last night my car was hit by a drunk driver after I just spent several months working to get the money to fix it. Having a movie like Spider-Man 2 to look to as a point of inspiration in what perseverance looks like and what it takes to manifest that in myself has been invaluable to me. Thank you for making this. It helps explain why I love it so much, and it helps knowing some people out there can understand the struggle I have.

Yeah , scenes like this made me like spider man , when you think about this concept " a kid who gets bitten by a spider and gets super powers " sounds stupid but is so well done that it just seems normal . I cry everytime in this scene and the scenes with uncle Ben .
When it comes to filmmaking the thing I love about the Raimi trilogy is that swinging feels actually dangerous , some cases ( Thinking of the chase after Uncle Ben dies) straight up terrifying.
That marvel geek Agreed, I love the swinging and action scenes in TASM movies. Can you imagine a Spider-Man movie with Raimi’s character drama and emotion, TASM’s action scenes and sound mixing, combined with the MCU wit? It would be spectacular.
I feel like people were so excited for spider-man to join the MCU that they forgot how good the original trilogy was and what spider-man is supposed to be.
I just realized something. During the scene at the party for Jameson’s son, Peter tries multiple times to grab food or a drink from the people carrying trays, and he’s never able to even touch one before others take them. Then after his conversation with MJ, he’s finally able to get a drink from one of the waiters, but the glass is empty. It seems to be played for laughs but when you really look at it, it just shows how much bad luck Peter has. He can’t keep a job, can’t pay his bills, can’t maintain healthy relationships, and now he can’t even get a damn drink

From what I hear the arms are in control. If anything we'll probably get a moment of Octavius getting back in the driver's seat and helping all 3 Spider-Men and anything less would spit in the face of this amazing film
I don’t think they will. Based off of the trailer, it seems like he becomes a good guy after only a little while. Maybe the arms took over for a minute, but he eventually gained control, but idk. Also, I don’t know if you noticed, but he gets zapped off of a building by Electro at one point, so that makes it seem like he will be helping. On top of that, it really seems like he’s helping them since he is informing them of things about the villains and not talking to him like he’s trying to kill him (besides when they are fighting of course.)
I feel like one of the main reasons Raimi Spiderman is so great is because he perfectly captures the sense of responsibility that defines Peter as a character. Far From Home kind of tries to do something similar to Spiderman 2 with Peter wanting to be a normal person but his hero life calls to him. But the difference is that Raimi Spiderman always made a choice, like when he chose to help that kid out of the burning building, or when he chose to reject MJ at the coffee shop. But MCU Spiderman feels nudged into it, if he had his way then he would've just let Fury & Mysterio fight off the elementals while he chills out with MJ, he literally had to get forced into acting like a hero. Peter feels like a regular dude at the end of the day in the Raimi movies (except for Spiderman 3, his normal life is pretty wild in that movie). Sure he had spider powers & fought criminals, but through all that he was just a guy working a crappy job to pay the rent for his shitty apartment & barely making his way through college. TASM Peter kind of had that with his dynamic with Aunt May, but most of the time he just felt too cool, even as Peter. MCU Peter feels the least regular out of all of them, I know he's in the MCU and all that but that doesn't mean the entire Marvel Universe needs to revolve around him, the only sense of normalcy about him is that he's a high schooler who likes a girl...that's pretty much it. I prefer a Spiderman who has to sow his suit back together after a hard night while hiding from Aunt May, knowing that he had to miss out on school work or socialising. Over a Spiderman who borrows a billionaire's lab to design his own custom made suit with holograms while his Aunt cheers him on, his friends don't care how many times he ditches them, and his school just ignore his antics.
this movie is fantastic, but there are A LOT of spidey fans that roam comment sections who condemn other spider-man movies for simply not being exactly like this film and it gets quite annoying
@@top1classics479 I think it's a shot at hi-top films considering that the only way he knows how to criticize the other Spider-Man movies is just to compare them to this film and say that those movie is bad because it didn't do EXACTLY what this film did.

I think the one for Spider-Man 2 is - “I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, make us noble and finally allow us to die with pride even though sometimes we have to be steady and give up the things we want the most, even our dreams”

just a stupid thing I noticed but mj’s play is actually “the importance of being ernest” by Oscar Wilde which literally talks about a man who hides his real identity in order to appeal to the women he wants so in a way the play represents Peter and mj’s situation
Yupa Lake Wow I didn’t know that thanks for sharing that
This movie has so many details like that.
The scene where Ock's wife told him to sleep, Peter's line was:
"Did Bernoulli sleep when he discovered the curve of quickest descent?"

Little details to love in this film.
Damn. This is truly one of the best superhero film.
I kinda figured that too, cause when I heard some of the lines in the scenes where they show the play I thought “wait, that sounds like someone” and it is, it’s about their relationship
Hmm life imitating art?
Hearing Tobey being optimistic about Spider-Man 2 and him praising Sam Raimi warms my heart a bit.

Even when in the fire scene he saved her as Peter Parker with no power, the same goes for the train scene even though he already got his powers back he still saved them as Peter Parker. Sam raimi is the master who gives life to my favorite superhero I discovered when I was 7 years old. today I a, 54 and I am still amazed when I am watching Spiderman. Thank you mister Sam Raimi.

Yeah , scenes like this made me like spider man , when you think about this concept " a kid who gets bitten by a spider and gets super powers " sounds stupid but is so well done that it just seems normal . I cry everytime in this scene and the scenes with uncle Ben .
n then mr dikavitch takes it lolllll
When it comes to filmmaking the thing I love about the Raimi trilogy is that swinging feels actually dangerous , some cases ( Thinking of the chase after Uncle Ben dies) straight up terrifying.
Jaina Is a Dreadlord in amazing spiderman 2 ending, andrew hurt his legs.that scene was good too.
yeah i think in the amazing spiderman movies its more shown
TASM swinging feels more realistic and and way cooler than in the raimi trilogy
That marvel geek Agreed, I love the swinging and action scenes in TASM movies. Can you imagine a Spider-Man movie with Raimi’s character drama and emotion, TASM’s action scenes and sound mixing, combined with the MCU wit? It would be spectacular.
i know its you opinion but i dont agree with you
"Everything spiderman does is a negative for Peter Parker"

You can also think spiderman is a hero to everyone but to Peter spiderman can be a villain to himself

Makes you want to hug poor guy.

Spider-Man 1 is much better than spider-man 2.
I came back to this after the No Way Home trailer to remind me of how important Octavius’s story is. I pray to God that they don’t fuck this up
True I am really nervous how they will handle the story I really hope that they are not bringing back the old casts as fanservice. The last two mcu spiderman movies was an "okay" for me but this new one oh boy....I'm both excited and worried so I hope I really really hope.
Watched No Way Home days ago, they did everything we wanted and more. Characters emotions exist, not just fan service.
@@xavierbaisley80 yeah he has always been my fav villain out of all Super hero villains and No Way Home definitely did him justice in my opinion

And compare the endings of MCU Spider-Man movies to the original trilogy's. We see that one has jokes and the other deeply impactful
And they say that we are blinded by Nostalgia...it's clearly not the case...

Some quotes from different movies for the Spider Man Trilogy:
Spider Man 1 - With great power comes great responsibility
Spider Man 2 - Life isn't about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward
Spider Man 3 - You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
I think the one for Spider-Man 2 is - “I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, make us noble and finally allow us to die with pride even though sometimes we have to be steady and give up the things we want the most, even our dreams”
