I got both the 14" and the 16" to try out and I gotta say although I expected to love the 16" more due to additional screen real estate, I just find the 14" much more comfortable to use on daily basis, carrying it around from room to room, using it on the couch or in my lap. It's nearly identical power-wise and although the 16" display is very nice, I find it a little too big when it's sitting directly in front of my face.

@@dreadavis9751 I disagree, I have the Air with 8gb and not getting more ram is my biggest regret. Several times I've caused it to slow down by having too many things open, and these days I'm consciously conscious of it and closing apps. I'd prefer to have 16gb so I don't have to worry about it.
Even before I open anything it seems to take up about 5gb, leaving me only 3 to browse and stuff, and then it starts using disk swapping, but by that point the memory pressure gets higher and higher and I just wish I had more real ram instead of using my actual disk like that.

@@theNimboo that doesn’t sound normal. I have an old 2013 iMac running off an external SSD with 8GB of RAM and have lots of apps open or running in the background no problem. As well as multiple tabs open in Chrome and safari.
On the MAC free RAM is wasted RAM and it will try to use most of it so Having 3GB RAM free or less is not a problem. You shouldn’t be seeing that drop in performance.
The RAM pressure in activity monitor is what you should be looking at, as you mention, and seeing if any APPs are eating up more than they should.
For some reason If I leave PowerPoint on for long periods on my IMac it eats up more RAM then It should which goes into SWAP (we are talking about 20 GB of RAM before a warning comes up) but I do not get any noticeable drop in performance.
I also now have a MacBook Pro 2021 16 inch model and although it has 16 GB RAM and I’m using the same apps as my iMac it uses up more RAM because it has more available.
As I said your performance is not natural for your use case if you have 3GB free and are seeing a slow performance.
8GB is fine for the OP’s use case and will be for good long while.

Hi Tom. Thanks for all your work. It would be great to hear/see your thoughts on the best external, high-refresh, 4K monitors to pair with these new MacBooks? Ideally one's that are for creative workflows (photo/video editing - I'm not a gamer) and at an affordable cost (sub £500?). I'm thinking to get the 14" MBP and use a good external display for home (I'm coming from a 27" iMac that died), but there are so many monitors on the market, and most of those rated 'best budget displays' are only 60Hz - but seeing your point on getting a 144Hz display has me pondering. Does having the laptops on charge most of the time, looking to replace my iMac, deleteriously affect the battery life? I've heard the OSX has a way of handling this thereby preventing wear on the battery. And if you were mainly using it for audio production then the base model with, say 32gb rams would be more than enough?

I have changed 3 units in three weeks because all of them "click" whenever I rest my palm near the trackpad or touch the aluminium body in specific points.
Imagine a snapping, high pitch sound, like frozen ice dropped in warm water.
Have you had the same issue?
The Apple Store I have returned the device at has told me "if this clicking sound is present in every unit, and you don't like it, maybe it is not the right laptop for you". I replied with "if you buy a car and the wheel squeaks every time you turn it, is it a shitty car or are you to blame?".
Previous to this laptop, I had the 2016 Touch Bar 15". I had to conduct 6 keyboard and display free of charge substitutions. Ultimately, I ran out of warranty coverage and they asked me 600€ to change the display, which was broken due to flexgate.
Really, a continuous disappointment. I am thinking about purchasing a late 2015 MBP. At least I'll have a stable machine…

For anyone wondering about this, I have stress test videos that show that it's not worth getting the M1 max on the 14" because the cooling system isn't as big. The 16" get a lot more performance out of the higher specced chips, so if you're going for power like that then get the 16" as you'll have a cooler machine that can actually ramp up to get te advertised performance.
