My 16” MBP M1 Max is mainly a desktop replacement for me, usually docked on a 24” 4K monitor but I’ve been thinking about going to 14” model for portability and to be able to work in more locations other than home. I’m just hesitant of the smaller screen display for photo and video editing, I remember the older 13” MacBooks really felt too small for long editing sessions.
Thank you Tech Chap. I stumbled upon this video recently after purchasing a new M2 MacBook Pro base model. I'll share that last year, I mistakenly bought an M1 Max 16in 32 GB 4TB (because it was the only available laptops at the time I needed an upgraded): although it was a hefty price paid and powerful machine, I realized that it was too much power for me in the past year. Things I used the M1 16in. for were some video editing, zoom online education for a part-time job, live-streaming games, photo editing, typing up lessons, surf browsing a few times, etc. I was also on the go and believe me, to those who are considering between the 14in and 16in, the 14in size is what I would prefer people to get if you're deciding to bring your laptop everywhere for portability. If you are not into 3D modeling or heavy duty workload 4K production and such, 14in. is the one for you. You always don't have to own the biggest and latest tech too if you can find the M1 at a very good price. I also agree that the 16in. is more of a desktop replacement with its screen and heft. Although the 16in has great battery life, the 14in still lasts you throughout the day and depending on what you're using it for. In conclusion, I sold my previous 16in M1 Max as it was too powerful for my needs, and am now greatly enjoying the lighter feel to the 14in M2 Pro, great screen, ports available and the latter. This year, I purchased the M2 14in pro base model and it's still a powerful machine. I hope to anyone who reads this finds peace knowing they bought the right laptop for their specific needs and not make the same mistake as I did saving money.

@@vladcodei ordered it and I’m still waiting for it to arrive, but I know I bought it for its overwhelming specs. This is my first time buying and owning a laptop, I do hope the 16 inch won’t bother me.
Have an m1 pro 14 after trying a 16. If you have any sort of monitor setup at home the 14 is great. Great laptop size on the go and powerful enough to do work at your desk. These are a little bit of a step up from m1 but I don’t think most people would be upset with saving money and still getting the great performance/battery life of m1.
@@dharmaandra4720 nah one of the m1 pro 16 inch laptops. It’s awesome if you’re going to use the laptop screen a lot but I usually just dock my 14 inch with a keyboard and monitor at home.
I think for most people 14 inch base model is a better deal. In my case I'm a programmer and more screen space is worth the extra cost because it provides better productivity. One thing you didn't mention is that 16 inch version has better speakers.
yeah the 16 inch is more of a desk top replacement like he said, I don't travel ever with my 16inch, I just use my 12.9 inch iPad or my 13 inch MacBook Pro 2016
The M2 sales are down overall. M1 was such a leap that most never upgraded. Also, it's not talked about in any of these reviews but using an M1 for work myself causes several annoying issues, particularly with wifi. PCs work just fine on my personal network and in the office, while the Mac always has issues trying to acquire connection. Anyone else using Intel Macs, no issues at all.
One other thing you didn't mention is that Apple charges $50 more for applecare per year for the 16 ($149 vs $99) So over the course of 3 years, that's another $150 which is just apple profiteering. You could probably make an argument that it costs them more to fix issues in a 14 than a 16 due to the smaller form factor, so I don't see any justification for that huge of a premium. Personally, based on what I do, and the fact that memory and storage is not upgradable in any manner in these machines, I will always pay a bit more for both storage and SSD space. There is nothing more annoying than constantly having to clear things out of the machine or move them around just to be able to do what you want to do. I wouldn't go with less than a 1tb main disk and 32 gigs, but then I make substantial use of virtualization, although any sort of workflow that handles a lot of data will benefit from additional memory in most cases. Having spec'd these out a good deal lately, for a 16" vs 14" with all the same specs (m2 pro, 30 core gpu, 32gb memory, 1tb) the 16" costs about $300 more (not factoring in the aforementioned applecare).
Which one worth of purchase between M2 Max 14inch and M2 Pro 16inch? Both have 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. FYI, I am currently using MBP 16inch on intel i9 2019.
YAY! After watching about 10 different videos on these things, you’ve released one showing I made the right choice!!! I went with the 16in & I am SOOOO happy 😍
That’s great. But after three months, did you think you did the right choice or do you think it would have been better if you had bought the 14” over the 16” ?
@@SalahAlddeenSalah I have the MBP 16" and couldn't be happier with my choice. I don't have an external display and my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. Such a relief not to have such a cramped display.
I have a 16 inch M1 Max that has served as a desktop replacement and I also have a m1 MacBook Air that I take everywhere with me. Best of both worlds 🙂
If you need a laptop and you likely travel, buy the 14 inch. You can always connect it to an external monitor if you want a larger display. If you need a laptop as a PC replacement and might not buy an extra monitor, go for the 16 inch. Or you just like bigger things. *wink*
The fully maxed-out 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.”
Just bought myself a 14" M2 MBP upgrading from the intel 2018 15". Unsure whether I've made the right choice! Everything definitely feels slightly smaller. I don't tend to travel a lot, but the option is definitely a plus! My laptop mainly remains at home and I normally just connect to my 4k 27 inch monitor. Is the additional weight of the 16 inch and the screen size that much more noticeable - especially if just using at home mainly? Any thoughts on whether I should return and get the 16" instead? Any help would be appreciated!
The weight of the 16-inch isn't necessarily the worst thing, it's more just how bulky it is. Doesn't fit well in places like coffee shops or airplanes. It is great if you use your computer mostly at home and it fits comfortably on your lap - but if you're on the go frequently, the 14 inch tends to be a better choice
I honestly can barely (if at all) tell the difference of weight between the 14” and 16”. Personally, even if I do get a monitor, I think I’ll use the 16” as a second monitor because of the quality of the display.
I bought the 14 and returned it within 24 hours to get the 16. The 14 just felt small coming from a 15 inch MBP, I don't regret switching back to the 16 a bit
I don’t regret my 16 inch at all, the bigger screen is great for coding. If I need a smaller computer to take to coffee shops or on a plane, I’ll just stick to my m1 iPad Pro 12.9.
Waiting for the M3 version 16. Hoping that it gets real-time raytracing like the iPhone. Of all the specs, I need to bump up memory. On my M1 with 16 GB, I hit that max limit all the time and it is frustrating. Going to max out the memory on my next Mac.
I’m looking to jump up from my 16” MBP 2019 (with i7)… but given the new pricing and slower SSD speeds, I’m going to find a brand new 14” MBP 2021 edition and save some cash in the process. I have found many UK retailers are selling this for as low as £1500 brand new, which is a £650 saving right off the bat.
Nice video! Small correction, the battery life figures at 1:01 should be swapped. It’s 12 hrs wireless web on the 14”, and 15 on the 16”, not the other way around.
I went for the M1 Air. 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD, runs Lightroom flawlessly. Would love to have the display of the 14” Pro, but that’s not worth the $800 CAD it’ll cost to me. Especially when the display on the Air is very good and a huge upgrade over my previous Windows laptop.
the issue I have avec the air is the lack of connectivity… Otherwise I would choose it as well. But I want to use it on shootings, checking my videos/photos on stage, making livestreams etc and for that having SD card reader, proper HDMI and more USB-c is a no brainer.
I would love to get the M1 Pro model for my MacBook but it’s almost impossible to find new. Don’t want refurbished. As for the size I think I’ll stick with 14’’. I’ll check in an Apple Store to be sure, but 16 seems so enormous… 15 would have been the sweet spot.
I ended up getting the M2 pro 14 inch base with 1tb drive upgrade and power adapter as its the best value given that apple nerfed the SSD speeds. I did some tests and the thermas are not great on M2 Pro base as it is, so I would be weary upgrading it to the full M2 Pro chip. In Canada the price of full m1 pro vs m2 pro base were about 200$ and the only downside performance wise is slightly lower multicore CPU test. The WIFI and HDMI upgrades easily make up for that. My tests had m2 pro binned running AI photo culling pinned at 6000 rpm on fans and 105-107C. Binned M1 Pro was running at 100-103 with fans at 4000 rpm. Cull time was 24:52 on M2 Pro binned 33:51 on M1 Pro binned. So we do have higher performance but also more heat. Just as a note same test on my main workstation with Ryzen 5900X with 128 Ram, CL18 3600 with full OC and liquid cooled, same sample cull took 20 minutes. Given how linearly these scale, for some tasks the Full M2 Pro could be a perfect desktop replacement for most people in a lot of workflows. As a note, I do make conditions not great for these test on purpose so the MacBook tests were ran on a bed so the airflow was not the greatest with ambient of 21C. M2 Pro binned did not actually throttle and still had 800 RPM of fan speed in reserve so given heatsync changes and higher power draw and therefore heat, I think 14s sweet spot is binned M2 Pro for price, performance, battery life and value... So what you said lol :D
the thermals are just fine the fan curves suck stock they want them to run high but make no mistake there is no issue with thermals on either the 14 or the 16
@@frostgodx I mean they are running at the limit of thermals on 14. I think for these chips throttle happens at 110 so only a few degrees of the thermal limit. My point was more that 14 is pretty close to thermal limit this M2 generation due to different smaller heat spreader on the heat sync or higher clocked chips, or combination of the two. And like I did mention the tests I did are in more extreme conditions for that specific reason to see how they perform at the limit.
@@EugeneKam I can appreciate an opposing view but that is just incorrect in all counts. To go into more depth the 14" only appears to be at the thermal limit when you use the stock apple fan curves/speeds which allows the chip to reach over 100c under heavy load to maintain user experience and fans not blaring loud. If you set your curves with an app like TG pro you can place a FULL 100% load on CPU and GPU for 10+ mins straight and never see a single digit above 87-88c. Though of course the fans are then sitting at 5800-6k rpm and are sitting maxed out which isnt realistic however there is still a good 15c to go before your maxing out the cooling system. Take any new windows gaming laptop and its common practice on them to run the fans at full speed and even have 3 to compensate for the heat and in many of those they are forced to throttle just to perform. These M1 and M2 chips simply are far more advanced along with the chassis redesign and cooling system being the best in a 14" on planet earth for the size. For some reason all the mainstream testing is on the stock fan profile which is pretty terrible at anything besides keeping it quiet which makes sense as thats what most people went berserk about on the intel models. As far as the heat spreader its smaller because they know they are allowing the temps on the die to go higher and dont want it to compromise the unified memory chips and shorten longevity which again makes total sense. I have done extensive testing on both 14" and 16" max 24 and 32 core gpu models since the 2021 release of the originals in this chassis and last week on release picked up a 30-core gpu 14" max and 38-core 16", i got a 38-core 14" finally delivered to me yesterday from my custom order and this is what I am basing my info from. I fully expected results like you are saying and like other videos show but again im just not when i am not running apple fan curves.
@@frostgodx I get what you are saying and I agree with creating profile, but the problem is an average consumer would not spend the 10-20$ on TG Pro to remedy the situation. The fact that you have to buy additional software to control the fans is already a fail on Apple's part in my opinion. Its a slipery slope, and that's why I appreciate most reviewers not using TG Pro to actually modify default behaviour of the machine to demonstrate the characteristics that at least 80% of the people are going to experience. At this point I could in theory get even petter pefromance via TG fan control and replacing the stock thermal compound with liquid metal and more dence memory insulation pads. As for Apple having the best thermal design, I would have to disagree. Apple is not using vapour chambers or larger heatpipes or anything really exotic that some of the other manufacturers use, including LM. The reason they are still running well enough is the ARM architecture just generally runs cooler, the actual thermal design of the chassis and heat spreader/fin stack is very generic and sourced based on cost to adequate enough cooling performance rather than anything else. Which is one of the reason why they chose to go with more dense NAND chips compare to M1 generation. The cost difference for chips themselves is about 1.10 dollars going from less to more dense memory, and loosing 40% of the speed. These are rough numbers based on and cost themselves. Add a few seconds for extra chip placement and fractions of cens for extra soldier and storage costs and you are very little to loose quite a bit on these machines. Buts that's pretty off topic. Apple products like any other company ultimately has the products built in a happy compromise between engineering and accounting departments.
Changed 15 years ago from PC to Mac, I will never go back to PC; Apple are so much better machines, better quality, no headaches, and just simpler to do everything. Yes they are expensive, but like everything else, you pay for quality, only one regret: I should have switch to Apple way before, would have same me a bunch of headaches I had so much in the past with all kind of PCs...

Other channels have tested the 512GB SSD read speeds and say they are much slower than on the M1 MacBook Pros. Therefore, they recommend at least a 1TB SSD, which they say is faster.
I got the 2021 14 inch base model last summer in John Lewis for £1,733 which I thought was a decent price, so I won't be upgrading anytime soon I already find it to be one of the fastest laptops available for that price, I'm more of a Windows man tbh and I still much prefer Windows 11 to Mac OS on the other hand since Apple started making their SoC CPU's with integrated memory and GPU it really beats out any Intel/AMD laptops and even quite a few desktops. I'm trying to teach myself video editing with FCPX and DaVinci Resolve because I simply refuse to buy Adobe's shareholders a new porsche each 😁Well you know what I mean Premiere Pro is outrageously expensive and crashes very often, unlike the competition which is way cheaper plus you get to own the app or it's even free with DaVinci, I think if you're coming from an older Intel Mac and you video edit then it really would be worth the upgrade but as you suggested if you can still find the 2021 model you'd save yourself a fortune and could buy 1TB external M.2 ssd with the savings, thanks for the review
@@Thetechchap then you did not say it does not matter if ssd speed is slower.. do you seriously think 2000 dollar is a small amount of money and do you think it is justifiable. also, if a person is paying extra for ssd then he also should get slower ssd speed as well and that would be justifiable who is paying 2000 dollars.

As you mentioned, these machines are expensive and the base model of 14” costs about 2000 dollars, personally I want to wait and buy the next generation.
Can you test using TG Pro to increase the fan speed on the 14” to match the 16” in performance when both are configured with the M2 Max? And then let us know how annoying the increases can speed is?

A question to anyone who’s used both the M2 14 and M2 16: is his conclusion that the 16” has better battery life accurate? I’ve seen other battery life tests in which the 14” has outperformed the 16”. I don’t mind forking out the extra £ for the 16” if the battery life is equal, or superior to, the 14”. However, if the 14” has better battery life, then it becomes a tougher choice.

yeah the 16 inch is more of a desk top replacement like he said, I don't travel ever with my 16inch, I just use my 12.9 inch iPad or my 13 inch MacBook Pro 2016
I have a 2019 and I love the 16 inch way better than my smaller 13 inch MacBook Pro, it's just a more premium viewing experience.
So glad i picked up the 14" 21 model at £1899, the price hike is nuts for what is offered.
I just got the base 14 M2 pro for £2100 new. Having had the M1 it's a definite step up and well worth the £200 more.
Ever since the m1 MacBook Pros was introduced I have always preferred the 16 inch cos I like big screens
Even tho I have a 16 atm I’m probably going with the 14 in the future, thanks for the information
@The Tech Chap… hows does the M2 Max preform on the 14”?
I went for the 14”. Primarily because the 16” would be too big for my desk.
I looking for an M2 Max 14” vs the M2 Max 16” review.
Does the 16 inch have better speakers than the 14 inch?
Yes
Thanks :)
Marginally, not a reason alone to buy 16 over 14 alone.
@@shaun1900 Thanks :)
I have a 16 inch M1 Max that has served as a desktop replacement and I also have a m1 MacBook Air that I take everywhere with me. Best of both worlds 🙂
How is it for traveling purpose ?
When you move around a lot, having a small device is very useful. The M2 13 inch is perfect.
@Valentino MC I'm thinking to get one but M3 lunching soon 😅
If you need a laptop and you likely travel, buy the 14 inch. You can always connect it to an external monitor if you want a larger display.
If you need a laptop as a PC replacement and might not buy an extra monitor, go for the 16 inch. Or you just like bigger things. *wink*
HP Pavilion EC0014AU is 14 inch
This.
@@whengrapespop5728 Literally exactly what I've done. Got the 16" and haven't looked back since!!
How is the 14" for photo editing? Do you think it's too small?
I went from a 2015 Intel MacBook to a 2020 M1 MacBook. I will go to a 2025 upgrade and not a second sooner. Mwah.
Where are the retailers
Nice video! Small correction, the battery life figures at 1:01 should be swapped. It’s 12 hrs wireless web on the 14”, and 15 on the 16”, not the other way around.
Good spot!
@@ConcreteAdvisory That is totally fair. I would really not mind having at least a USB-A and a HDMI port built in.
16" is the same size as the 15" (2020 and earlier)
Apple no longer sells refurbished M1 Pro
You must have M1 Pro 14 inch and than have M2 Pro 14 inch than anyway please take care your laptop because thats your last laptop forever
the thermals are just fine the fan curves suck stock they want them to run high but make no mistake there is no issue with thermals on either the 14 or the 16
@@frostgodx I mean they are running at the limit of thermals on 14.
I have 14 and 16 inch M1 pro. I will sell both and get one M2 max. But I'm trying decide between which size to get.
Macbooks are great machines. But i cant get used to the OS. I am a windows child and cant seem to switch
This was helpful, thankyou. I currently have a 2019 imac with 32gig ram on it. Will 16gig Ram be enough for M2 macbook?

I had to make a decision to buy the m1 MacBook Pro, or go for a much cheaper hp laptop in December, and I’m really not disappointed at all with my 17” hp envy. If anyone would like to see a video on it let me know, I can compare to m1 Mac mini from a speed point of view.

Between NEW MacBook Pro 14" M2 MAX 38-Core-GPU and Intel i9 13900kf RTX4080/4090 pc, which computer do you think is more efficient for lightroom?
Hi Sir what if I choose the Apple M2 chip Max for video editing which size is better choice 14 inch or 16 inch. I need yr advice and recommendations. Yes the 14” easy to bring along any location but the 16” is difficult but the 16” big scree to viewing.tks
Good comparison. I think the £200 difference is the fairer of the two - spec’d up the same. I’m in the purchasing situation now and can’t decide. Replacing a 16” touchbar which is pretty thin. Concerned the m2 will be a chunk
Great vid. But the decision always boils down to what you need these powerful notebooks for and what your budget is.
Other channels have tested the 512GB SSD read speeds and say they are much slower than on the M1 MacBook Pros. Therefore, they recommend at least a 1TB SSD, which they say is faster.
Wonder if the 16” base model has the same performance hit as the 14”.
What about the much larger touch pad on the 16?
It’s nicer, but the 14 is already huge
This is what I imagine Henry of Skalitz portrayed by Ryan Gosling would look like
I got the 2021 14 inch base model last summer in John Lewis for £1,733 which I thought was a decent price, so I won't be upgrading anytime soon I already find it to be one of the fastest laptops available for that price, I'm more of a Windows man tbh and I still much prefer Windows 11 to Mac OS on the other hand since Apple started making their SoC CPU's with integrated memory and GPU it really beats out any Intel/AMD laptops and even quite a few desktops.

I wonder would the 14 m2 max throttle like the m1 max?
The fully maxed-out 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.
14 inch is just better, but I'm used to 16 inch usage
It is NOT better
Love the vids mate
I have a genuine ambivalence towards them. MacBook 14” might be a good choice, but the next year there will be a big gap between m2pro chips based on 5nm and 3nm. As you mentioned, these machines are expensive and the base model of 14” costs about 2000 dollars, personally I want to wait and buy the next generation.
Good! Please take care because thats your last laptop forever
Constantly waiting for the next generation is a mugs game
Then the M5 will be 2nm so might as well wait till then as well
Can you test using TG Pro to increase the fan speed on the 14” to match the 16” in performance when both are configured with the M2 Max? And then let us know how annoying the increases can speed is?

A question to anyone who’s used both the M2 14 and M2 16: is his conclusion that the 16” has better battery life accurate? I’ve seen other battery life tests in which the 14” has outperformed the 16”. I don’t mind forking out the extra £ for the 16” if the battery life is equal, or superior to, the 14”. However, if the 14” has better battery life, then it becomes a tougher choice.
The 16" has better battery with the Pro chip
