Pressing the buttons slightly late grants you more score than hitting the buttons right on time.

This is VERY helpful and also very interessting.
You defiantly have alot of insight to the inner workings of the game. The way the PaRappa games are put together is pretty complicated. As a huge PaRappa fan and hobby game designer it is my dream to someday put together a working parappa game engine.
Personally I very much prefer UJL and PaRappa 1's gameplay though. A video showing your knowledge of the inner workings of those games (similar to this video) would be very appriciated.

+BLBridged Wow, your comment means a lot, thank you for your compliments! Yeah I honestly prefer UJL's algorithm to get cool, it's not heavily based on hitting the offbeats, although that helps a lot too in getting cool. UJL's engine is more intricate, but, I'll think about making a video of it later down the road. Parappa 1 engine is simpler and similar to UJL's engine. Interestingly after I figured out PTR2's algorithm to get cool I tried to hit the backbeat in Parappa 1, surprinsingly that worked quite well in a lot of cases enabling me to get cool mode easier. You should get a better idea on how the algorithm for this game works, I've posted ways to achieve cool mode for Fleaswallow's and CCMO's levels, and I will agree with you that it's better balanced than in PTR2 since it doesn't rely heavily on hitting the backbeat but creating a rhythm that sounds "cool". Take into consideration though that PTR2 changed the genre a bit and the songs are closer to an R&B genre rather than the classic rap seen in Parappa 1 (said by Rodney Greenblat himself):
Gamasutra: When it came to PaRappa 2, was the team disappointed by moving back or were they just happy to return to what worked?
Greenblat: Well, that's what I thought was going to happen, but once again Matsuura wants to do everything in a freaked out, backwards upside down way. AndI love him for that, he's an artist who's constantly trying to beat
people's expectations, to trick them out with that they think he's going to do. So it was another case of that with this R&B thing instead of rap. I was happy that it involved the same characters (from PaRappa 1), but the way it was all going to work, the storyline, the animation was all turned around.
Probably another reason why they changed the algorithm to rely more on the backbeat.

UJL always seemed to have the most advanced gameplay of the three. Recreating the engine requires alot of insight and knowledge. Knowledge that is very hard to aquire. Like, does it matter how often you use each button in a line, as long as you use, each given button at least once? Does the game have a button limit on each line that, when exceeded, give you a bad rating? Button Mashing usually results in a bad rating.
A game judging the quality of musical freestyling performance is a pretty surreal concept but PTR games especially UJL do a pretty damn good job at doing so. (with a few exceptions, we all sometimes played a line that sounded totally awesome, but the game still rated it as bad, but even that is relativly rare. You can usually see where you messed up, and caused the game to give you a bad rating)
      Just 2 more questions:
On PTR 2, did you figure everything you know, out by just playing that game, or do you know some of the stuff by hacking into the game, or other methods?
Do you know any rhythm game other then the parappa games, where freestyling is a thing, to some extend?
Because it would be interesting to see how other games might do things differently (and possibly even better) but y'know most rhythm games are all about just pressing buttons at the right time, with no freestyling involved.

This may help to a few people, it may not, but I some-what figured out methods for most stages, which will mostly require the R3 method, so I'll explain which each R3 tilt you would have. You would also need the Yellow hat for this.
    R3 Up - Red Hat(Easiest Difficulty)
    R3 Left - Orange/Blue Hat(Easy/Intermediate Difficulty)
    R3 Right - Pink Hat(Hard Difficulty)
    R3 Down - Yellow Hat(Hardest Difficulty)
And I think just by pressing R3 without moving it either gives you a random hat, or the Hat you have on. Anyway, here's the difficulty's I suggest on the stage, and what you should possibly do:
Stage 1: R3 Up - Mash the Button 4 times in the beginning, then do a little offbeat, like a one-two-two one one, two-two-three-four type of thing.
Stage 2: [Possibly] R3 Alone, Somewhat of 'Follow the rhythm and also adding extra buttons do the song.' sort of thing.
Stage 3: R3 Alone/Down: Be a little off with the buttons to get the tip of Cool, then make up your rhythm while still going a little bit off.
Stage 4: R3 Down: Follow with the rhythm with some button beat mashing, For example:
[Moosheshia] To the-To the right. [Parappa] To-To-To the Righ-Righ-Rig-Right!
Stage 5-7: I haven't tried yet, but I'll reply once I understand it.
Stage 8: R3 All but Up: Basically just do some more button mashing, then make your own groove.
Hopefully this is helpful to you, it'll certainly be helpful for me as a reminder. Let me know if it helps, or it just doesn't, as the game may be strict on you and be like "Nah, that's not how you do it." Like me in cool mode of Stage 2.
EDIT: Just going to put my tips of my own replies, just to make my own words shorter.
HOW TO DO ALL THIS: The PSC has two sticks on the bottom, called Left Stick (L3) and Right Stick (R3) and both sticks work like how a normal stick in any other controller can be, whether it be an xbox, a gamecube, or a N64 Controller, they work like each separate controller, with the ability to move 360 degrees. Although, a more special feature of the Playstation Controller is that pushing down on the controller acts as a button of it's own self, in some special games...Which a few other controllers also have this aspect, but in this game, it's very critical.
Now with that explanation out of the way, Here's a simple way on how you activate the R3 trick.
On the Right Stick, push and hold down the stick and aim in the direction you want to specify (Up, Down, Left, Right) As I had listed above, each movement of the stick corresponds to a hat (Example: Up = Red Hat, the first set of 8 stages. If confused, read update that I will post shortly below.)
Now the tricky part about this is basically selecting the stage. Considering your thumb is already locked onto the right stick, and also aimed in a direction you want to select your difficulty in, I find it best to use either your other hand or your middle or ring finger.
Now why I mention both your other hand or middle/ring finger is because you could also do yet another trick, the L1 and L2 trick, which essentially when you hold both L1 and L2 you can skip the cut scenes and the annoying Boombox.
Stage 5: R3 Down - I found out that the R3 Down thing may also be wrong, so it's more or less the mode with the fast lyrics. Anyway, it'll mostly be in the beginning verse, and it's really just button Mashing.
Stage 6: R3 Any but Up - This one may be a little tough, as it's a mixture; so it's best to try out the stages before tackling this one.
Stage 7: R3 Down[A.K.A, the one with the shortest lyrics.] The trick here is mostly in the part where you list off countries, mostly at the L and R section, but who knows, maybe it's somewhere else.
While I was testing out some tries for Cool Mode, I found out that you can actually do the Stage 3 trick in all of the stages, which thanks to that tip, the only level I have left to get cool mode is stage 2! So once I beat that, I'll try my best to explain how to keep each cool mode by re-watching the special replays I gave myself.
Incase you're lost, the trick for every stage is to slightly be off with a few/all buttons until you reach the tip of cool. Once you do reach that tip, either make up your own rhythm, or button mash whatever the last buttons were in the line. If you're still lost, just...Watch the video. I didn't really check it out until after typing it.

Ok, so for a long forgotten stage...Chop Chop Master Onions, to be exact. Thanks to his very strangely short rhythms he is pretty challenging to get really good 'Cool' rhythms on. So I did take a break from the game just trying to try the other games, specifically Um Jammer Lammy. And it's way of getting cool mode actually made me interested and try it out. Surprisingly enough, it worked!
Now while UJL expects you to make up a lot of separate and funky grooves and strokes, the best method I found for the entire game was to basically Spam all of the buttons in a "one-two-three" kind of rhythm. Most of the time, it worked!
Another thing, specifically for people who read the comment above. I mentioned "sets of 8 levels" in this game, and some people may not get what that means. Well, what I mean by "sets of 8 levels" is the sets of 8 levels in the game, from Beard Burgers to Party Time. Now why I also mention the word "sets" is because, if you haven't beaten/seen PTR2 to it's fullest, there is actually 3 other sets of the same level, just now with a new hat and added difficulty (Which IS why I mention random colors way back up at the R3 method!)

I have a method that gets me cool on the first two lines of thesong. Sometimes it works for me and i use it all the time. I reccomend using it but you dont have to. So even if you get cool 2:30 Repeat the first 2 words over and over and boom instant cool, although im not sure if its for yellow hat. I have yellow hat and it works, so try it with orange hat and tell me results. I think its yellow hat exclusive. Even with it not being on with the dots, its still good and it always gets me cool mode. I only know how to do yellows hat method because its easy. I dont think orange hat works because it usually says "Cut!" Just once but yellow hat is easier because it says "Cut! Cut!" And you still hit that second triangle, so give orange hat a test and see if my method works, if not. Yellow hat is the way to go for cool mode with my method. Again: I use this method and reccomend it.

    • @BattleFactoryHead

As I'm understanding your method is like this: XX . XX . XX . XX (X being when you press the button and . being the breaks in between) -- I tried this and it's great for racking up a LOT of points, but it didn't get me cool mode unfortunately. So I combined it with the video's strategy of . X . X . X . X etc (hitting on the backbeats) by rapping something like this: XX . XX . XX . . X . X . X -- it gave me cool mode instantly! Recommend trying that if anyone's struggling on this song
