This song was recorded in 1971. Her name is Karen carpenter and her brother is Richard. They are called the Carpenters. When Karen recorded this song she recorded it in one take. Superstar is a Masterpiece. Karen also played the drums.
@@golddredgewater Well, to be fair, Elvis was an incredible perfectionist. Even if he did great the first time, he also wanted to give it another go. :)
Her name is Karen Carpenter. Her brother is on the keyboard. She hated being the front person of the group. She wanted to only play the drums. She didn't think that she could sing. Her voice is so soothing. There was no auto tune back then either, This was how she really sounded.
That's nuts that she thought she couldn't sing. If music could be compared to honey, she was raw, pure, sweet honey. Her voice could hit all sorts of ranges and give us all kinds of feelings. So many great singers thought she was an amazing singer. Her music really touches me. It does break my heart that she suffered in the end.
The Carpenters released this version of "Superstar" in 1971. Unfortunately, Karen Carpenter died from heart failure due to complications of anorexia nervosa in February of 1983. Karen's voice is one of the greatest of all time.
you will never listen to a carpenters song and say "what did she say?" her voice was so clear she wanted you to hear and FEEL every word....the best kind of singer imo.
She fell in love with a superstar guitar player and they had a romantic affair..but now he's gone and she's alone, listening to him on the radio. Her voice is sweet...and low. No high screeching.
The song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and the late, great Leon Russell (who also wrote the Carpenters songs "This Masquerade" and "A Song for You") and was released by Delaney & Bonnie as Groupie (Superstar) in 1969 with Eric Clapton on guitar and Leon Russell on keyboard. Though it was a good song, the Carpenters, with a few lyric tweaks and arrangement changes, made the song theirs!

Karen Carpenter was 21 when she recorded Superstar. She did it in one take while reading the handwritten lyrics off of a napkin. She was a,true talent. The song was written by Leon Russell and arranged by Richard Carpenter, Karen's older brother who also played the piano.
Karen Carpenter...I've been listening to Carpenters since 1971. This is one of their greatest hits. Her voice is considered one of the best female voices ever recorded. Some, like me, think it IS the greatest female voice ever recorded. Many people say her voice was angelic. You decide.
The song is about a groupie singing to a rock star who had a one-night stand with her while passing through town. The song was originally written and performed by Bonnie and and Delaney (also written by Leon Russell, who also wrote ‘A Song For You’ and ‘Masquerade’). It was originally titled “Groupie (Superstar)”, and when Bonnie sang it, she could “hardly wait to sleep with [him] again”. I like Karen’s PG version better.
Now in April of 2022 my go to everyday listening song by Carpenters for this +70 year old is "Yesterday Once More." I suggested that song to be played at least once a day by our local "Oldies" radio station.
That lady is Karen Carpenter, one of the greatest female vocalists of all time! She has fallen in love with a musician who is a SUPERSTAR; he is traveling and she only hears him on the radio, and she can't wait for him to return.
I first heard the Carpenters (Close to you) in July of 1970, a week before my mom died. Their music followed me for years, culminating with my favorite Carpenter song, Masquerade. Thank you Ricard and Karen for the gift of your music.
The singer is Karen Carpenter, one of the best female vocalists of all time. And the song was released in 1971! Yes, she is singing about a superstar that she was in love with and told her he loved her!
Karen had a beautiful voice and one could always understand the lyrics when she sang, which allowed one to relax and enjoy the musical story. Sings like a melancholy angel. Beautiful.
I think when Luther heard this he was so blown away he had to record it. Smooth, Rich, Pure, Deep, Perfect pitch. Moving. So, sad. She was sad in her life. No she loves a superstar

In 1975 Playboy named her the best rock drummer ahead of Zepplins drummer.
Karen Carpenter has a voice of an angel. She is the best female singer ever.❤🌹 Her brother, Richard plays the piano and Karen plays the drums. Superstar was a Beatles song.
Yes! The original by Bonnie & Delaney was called ‘Groupie (Superstar)’, and the original lyrics said ‘and I can hardly wait to sleep with you again’. Poor deluded groupie…

Check out their hit song from 1970 that pretty much started it all for the Carpenters. Check out the song CLOSE TO YOU, find a video on RUclips that lasts at least up to 3:41, enjoy
The song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. It was originally planned to be called "Groupie (Superstar)" since the lyrics are about a rock superstar who had a one night stand with a groupie. To the superstar, it was just a fling but seen through the eyes of the groupie, she fell in love with the superstar and believed him when he said he'd be back again. It has been covered by a number of singers, including Luther Vandross, but none of the versions did as well on the charts as the Carpenters version. The Carpenters had so many great hits - Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, We've Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More - are just a few of their songs that peaked at #1 or #2 in the US.
Just to add info; The song was 1st released as "Groupie (Superstar)." It was covered at least 3 times before Richard Carpenter heard Bette Midler do it on the Tonight Show & thought it'd be a good for them. He changed the title (**see edit/correction below) & some lyrics, to better fit the Carpenters clean cut image. Below is a link to the original, released as a single in 1969 by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, with Bonnie (Bramlett), lead vocals, Rita Coolidge, back-up vocals, Eric Clapton, guitar & Leon Russell, piano. When D&B released their 1972 album, they used the original 1969 recording on it, which is why some sites mistakenly list theirs as 1972, instead of as the 1969 original. Link to the original; ruclips.net/video/86S6upe_GO0/видео.html **Edit to correct myself. I've since seen the label for Cher's cover, which was released as a single Nov. 1970, as just "Superstar", so I was incorrect in saying Richard Carpenter shortened the title. It may be that, of the pre-Carpenters versions, only D&B's original was released under the 2 word title.
Karen & Richard Carpenter, siblings and one of the most beautiful voices ever Edit: This came out in 1971 and her brother seen in this video is on the keyboard. There was a movie called "The Karen Carpenter Story" Luther Vandross covered this song in the 80s
She died in 1983 at the age of 32 from anorexia. It's Karen Carpenter. The group is the Carpenters. Her brother Richard is a musical genius and did the arrangements. I think she had a fling or romance with a guitar player he said he'd be coming back this way again. He didn't take it seriously she did and relived it thru the radio.
The superstar is the one singing on the radio, she is singing about. She is talking about how she is with him every time his songs came on the radio. There were no "music videos" in the 70s, these were excerpts from TV appearances.
its a song about a fan who had a one night stand with a star performer who told her he loved her and she really thought he did. She is lying to herself and telling herself he's coming back. her heart is breaking.
The Carpenters were a brother and sister team. The song was released in 1971, not 1985. Karen was a drummer as you will see in other videos. I’m really glad you enjoyed her voice!!
Listen to the Royal Philharmonic version that Richard remastered. Not only is it better, it shows Richard's underrated talent as an arranger. You will love it, absolutely LOVE it.
That's 1971. Karen passed in 1983. You're getting chills bruh because Karen's voice has that sincerity and warmth. It's genuine like she is singing to you. Oh yeah, and it's no autotune back in those days.
Karen saw herself as a drummer who was talked into singing. Watch one of the clips showing her drumming and you will see just pure joy. Richard provided the brilliant musical arrangements, fantastic keyboards and those superb harmonies that only siblings can produce. This song was written by the great Leon Russell (played with Joe Cocker, The Beach Boys, Elton John and recording sessions for The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan and many others) and Delaney Bramlett (Delaney and Bonnie).
Ok, do you know that before Karen’s beautiful voice was discovered her first love were her drums her happy place. Keep an eye on her smile, never leaves her face. Carpenters-Karen Carpenter Drum Solo (1976)
The original version of the song was done by Delaney & Bonnie and it was called “Groupie (Superstar)” and is about someone obsessed with the superstar.
I enjoyed your youthfulness & enthusiasm! Please react to one of my all-time favs from them, also done the same year 1971. The title is, "A Place To Hideaway" . O can't get her angelic voice out of my head! Another absolutely stunning example is, "Goodbye and I Love You" from 1975. Karen was 21 in 1971, as seen here.
Karen had the voice of an angel. She died almost 40 years ago following complications from anorexia (a disorder that was not at all well-known, and even less understood at the time, and for which there were limited treatment options). There have been many excellent female singers before and since, but no one has yet equalled Karen's effortless contralto of honey and wood smoke.
Hi Fabian. The song is about a woman who falls for a rock star, has a tryst with him, but in a bout of delusion awaits his return, falling for it when he said he love her. A line in the second verse was changed to suit their image. ' and i can hardly wait to sleep with you agin' was changed to 'And i can hardly wait to be with you again'
The vocal you hear here is not just a first take. It's the first time Karen ever sang the song. She was one of a kind. And yes, this song was a hit single for Carpenters, their fourth or fifth one. They were a hit machine in the first half of the 70s. Know what a power ballad is? No one did until Richard invented the genre with another Carpenters hit, "Goodbye To Love" in 1972. Check that one out... "Superstar", written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett, is a song about a "groupie" who is infatuated with the frontman of a band. Richard heard it in a TV performance by a young Bette Midler and arranged for Karen to sing it. (She took to it instantly; as I noted, the vocal you just heard, which was the single release, was the first time she ever sang it...)
This is a great analysis. I like how you noted that back in the day voices didn't have to be "super high-pitchy." Karen just had a simple, supremely beautiful voice. And it's not 1985; it's more like 1970.
Well, to be honest, I was born in the 70s, but the music of the 70s, 80s, and also 90s make me feel nostalgic, but in different ways, I'd say. Anyway, Karen Carpenter, you were a great drummer, great singer, a great soul. Actually, you were a fantastic singer.
This song was actually about a groupie...someone who tried to be with the star or a band member of a show.Try Goodbye To Love, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun(but live versions, cos everyone has done these) Karen was amazing and her brother, Richard played keyboards and arranged. She considered herself a "drummer who sang". She died in 1983 at the age of 32 from complications of the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa. R.IP and still missed.
50 yrs.> Carpenters still touch Hearts & Souls = Anointed Gift from God. Karen's Solo Album was not released until 1996. Imagine IF she was Supported in her Solo Love Project of 1979/80 & released > while Richard took off all of 1979> No bad marriage = CARPENTERS Together Again = a 2nd METEORIC LAUNCH!
''Superstar'' is pretty much a song about a groupy for a touring Rock band who gets too attached to the Bandmember that was Her 'Superstar' and is hard to let him go., Love the Harmony singing in this song.

Her voice could sooth a charging Lion!!
some say this was about a groupie sleeping with a rock star , she thought he loved her not!! karen what a special voice
This is a great analysis. I like how you noted that back in the day voices didn't have to be "super high-pitchy." Karen just had a simple, supremely beautiful voice. And it's not 1985; it's more like 1970.
This video is from 1971. The song was released in 1971 on their tan album called "Carpenters".
You get it bruh. The music from that era and The Carpenters was sweet.
My fave!
I agree she's the best. This was 1971. 1971.......barely 21yo
Don’t want it to end
And your hooked
''Superstar'' is pretty much a song about a groupy for a touring Rock band who gets too attached to the Bandmember that was Her 'Superstar' and is hard to let him go., Love the Harmony singing in this song.
If you don't know who Karen Carpenter is bro....I can tell you in a split second she is the most beautiful voice ever, straight up.
Amazing song
Karen Carpenter. Her brother played the piano. She was also a drummer.
To see/listen to what a first-rate drummer Karen C. was, check out her drum solo on the Carpenter's '76 TV SPECIAL. You'll understand why Playboy mag. voted her top pop/rock drummer in their annual poll ('72).
Her name is Karen Carpenter. Her brother Richard plays the keyboard and does the arranging. I'm pretty sure this song came out in 1972. You're not the first person I've heard compare Karen's voice to maple sugar or syrup.
Check out the song Rainy days and Monday's, and her playing the drums (RIP Karen) ruclips.net/video/PjFoQxjgbrs/видео.html
