- In todays video I am going to teach you how to install soft close drawer slides. Regular slides do not perform well and when you add soft close drawer slides they drasticly increase performance of your current kitchen drawers. Installing the soft close drawer slides is super easy and does not take much time at all.

nicely done. However you don't line the front of the slide FLUSH withe the front of the cabinet. You RECESS the body of the slide a 1/16th or 1/8th You do this so that when the drawer closes, the self close mechanism can completly hold the drawer closed at the cabinet face. I still think it's a good explanation video

Great video! This helped me install soft close drawers in my kitchen over top my white epoxy wheel glides. The blocking is extremely important and I suggest going to an actual lumber yard to get custom cuts to fill the gap. I had to get 13/16” which big box stores did not have. I counter sunk 1 1/4” drywall screws to fasten the blocking and used 1/2 inch spacer to lay atop my new glide. Having a counter already there makes it difficult to work under and had some awkward times. Use a small level and zip the screws. Fitting the drawer back into the cabinet while the old epoxy wheel was still on was great to work as a guide. It was tricky unscrewing the bottom wheel glide off, but zip in your screws and push the drawer box in. Pull it out and push in a couple times to work it in. I used a silicone lube spray on each side of the guide, and inside bearing track. Very happy I used this method, thanks!

My cabinets were brand new so getting the size was easy but on custom cabinets or other once I agree you will have to get the exact measurement to make this work better. If they are too wide then the slides will not perform properly. Glad your project turned out great!
Very cool method to use the original hardware to keep everything aligned! I was dreading having to make lines with a pencil and perhaps getting it wrong. This way, it's much easier. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Once you get your pieces of wood cut and do one cabinet all of the rest you will fly right through. You are looking at roughly 5 minutes a cabinet to change over.

Thanks for watching! The old slide is only left in until the new slides are in place then it is removed. I do sometimes leave stuff behind so when they renovate 20 years from now they get a laugh. Sometimes I leave notes or other things. lol
@@BrianWingard Yes. I like to look at the techniques of the earlier people. Once, I removed some old sheetrock to discover the past owner used concrete nails to attach the 1/2" sheetrock. I always leave notes for the next guy with a sharpie. (Have used your links to buy my supplies. Hope it will be enough to keep you in beer.)

I just redid my kitchen drawers with bb slides but I wish they rolled as easy as the cheap junk rails. Something in between would be nice. Still a good upgrade.

Thanks so much for the tutorial Brian. It is a very efficient way to install slides. What do you do if you have a wide cabinet with two drawers and no side panel between the drawers? In my case there is no side panel to screw the 1x4 wood blocking to between the two drawers in a single cabinet.
Inside of my drawers (with the cheap teflon ball setup like yours) is already the wood you suggest installing to receive slow close hardware. So do I simply add the slow close on top of existing guide (with 1/2" shim) then connect like you did and remove old junkie teflon slides and repeat? Detail question...Is it TWO 1/2" shims or a total of 1/2" shim above old track? How does shim stay in after removing OLD slide?
In this process tonight, tedious and I am about to have an aneurism. Thanks for the video.

Did you end up using the combination square in the video?
Thanks for watching. I ended up not using it in this video. I should have explained though what I use it for. Usually with stock slides I measure the distance from the slide to the side of the cabinet but with these cabinets a piece of 3/4 inch wide board fit right in. Sometimes you need to find the exact width so I use the combination square to either test widths of scrap wood I have such as plywood or if I am using my table saw I will transfer the measurement from the square over to the saw so I know I have the exact width. Hope this helps explain it some.
BrianI just watched your video. It was helpful. I did wonder about one thing though. After you mounted the new soft close slide you removed one part of the old slide. The part that was attached to the drawer. But what about the other part that was inside? That would be the other half of the old slide. I guess you could just leave it there, is that what you did?

Thanks for watching. I thought I had responded but maybe it did not go through. I never had to remove the soft close part of it but I would imagine removing the spring section in the back of the slide would make it work like normal.
Can you do this without taking off the kitchen counters?
Thanks for watching. You can still do this with the countertop on but it is a little more difficult since you have to do the exact same steps from underneath the drawer.

When deciding length to buy , do you measure drawer length or full cabinet depth ? Some of drawers in the same cabinet are shorter than others , don’t ask why ,, an older home 🤷♂️

Our new soft clothes drawers are TOO HARD TO OPEN. How to disable the mechanism? I did tell the installer beforehand when I tested a sample, but he said he's never had a complaint about them. Well, I'm complaining now after the install as well...
Do you happen to know what brand he used for your install? If not I will see if I can figure out how to disable the mechanism in the hinge.
@BrianWingard I checked it out before the countertop went on. The end part of the each metal runner has a bright blue plastic insert at the far end. I figure I could pull out or break out that piece? Or, as I saw in another video, undo a latch or something there. First need to know how to take out the drawer to access that part.
Funny thing about the manager of the install: He didn't visit the site except to plan the install at the start, maybe a few minutes during the install, and to get the payment after. He was in a hurry to get out on the day my dad paid him. He stayed only a few minutes & didn't stick around to find out if we were content with the install, and to gather some decent feedback to address & progress with. I barely got a chance to tell him only a few of my concerns, one of them as we was rushing out the door as if to evade me lol. I did ask him how to remove the drawers, but his mind was elsewhere. [So now we know why he, as he says, hasn't got any complaints about the soft close feature lol.]
Do you take the shim out after you put in the new slide ?
Thanks for watching. No I leave the shim in place. Since I am not screwing it in with a bracket in the back of the cabinet the shim will have to stay in place for support. That is one of the reasons you want to match the thickness so the drawer will slide smooth.

@@BrianWingard what holds the shim in place once you remove OLD slide? I thought you wedged it up against just until you removed the OLD parts...We dont attach the 1/2" shim to wood you installed...do we?
You didn't need the wood. Buy the brackets that screw into the back of the cabinet.
Thanks for watching. Only reason I did it this way is so beginners or anyone without a lot of experience can handle this. When you install the ones with the brackets in the back if they are off even by a little bit you end up adjusting them a lot so they do not pinch the drawer causing it not to shut properly. Also factoring if anyone who has a counter already attached this way works a lot easier in my opinion for anyone without the experience. Basically just wanted to make this as user friendly as possible.
You need to quit working so much and go search the margins for some carp!

i know you won't post this but this video is BAD you fail to explain that drawer case has to be 1 inch less than opening they don't work for all cabinets. Also Kreg makes a jig that makes this 10 times easier I can't believe you have sponsors
I failed to see how you think the video is bad, but you are entitled to your opinion. I am just showing how to add slides to stock cabinets, but I guess I should’ve mentioned the 1 inch I just assumed people knew this. So since I do houses all the time, the reason I don’t do the kreg tool is for the simple fact when I do rentals, you’re putting all your trust in the way of the drawer, connected to the back of the cabinet and most people when I do rentals put all kinds of stuff in the drawers, whereas doing it this way, the full weight of the drawers, or connected to the sides. Also, I am not sponsored by any house company, so not sure where you got that. This is all me doing projects on my properties with my own money. I would gladly take free stuff though lol 😂
If you can not understand the value of this video, you have no reason doing your own home repairs!

If I leave the old slides on would the soft close feature of the new slides work? Two sets of slides seem more secure....
Thanks for watching. The problem with leaving the old slides on is it will be easier to have misaligned and not get a smooth movement. It sounds good in theory but my results in the past found it was better to only one one set on.

I was able to set the new slide on top of the old but sometimes you have to use the square to get the same measurement down from the top of the cabinet and the square can be set so you can ensure they are the same measurement both front and back. Hope this clarifies.
