Mike Portnoy is truly a connoisseur of drums, evident in his meticulous explanations of the songs he performs. Additionally, his influence is discernible through his keen awareness of contemporaries in the drumming sphere.
MP is absolutely one of the GOAT's and my all time favorite drummer. I've met him twice after 2 different DT shows and he is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
i discovered M. Portnoy in the early 90's when they were on their 'Images and Words' tour. Up until then I'd never, ever seen anything like him. Not even the legendary N.Peart. I would often refer to him as a drummer from another planet. Alien skills. Trying to figure out his timing signatures were virtually impossible. And since then, ive come across amazing drummers, but none who had that awe struck feeling....Not until 3 months ago, when i stumbled across this drummer name, El Estepario Siberiano. IMO, El Estepario Siberiano is the best, most versatile, and humble drummer i have ever had the pleasure of watching. Mike Portnoy #2.

As for most progressive bands, he surf on the edge of several styles and may not be to the taste of the mass. However, he is clearly one of the best current drummer and should stay there for a while. (I really love his LTE work!)

Bonzo is the best influence on any drummer...By the way the intro to Rock in Roll has zero bass drum watch him play it. The bass drum isn't in the song till the band breaks in. It's all Snare and hi hat hat playing the same thing with accents. Also in the song bass drum part is accents in different places. But that's what made him the best...to this day I've seen very few drummer pro or not mess that songs beginning up.

Its gotta be Bonham for me, but Neil Peart is the biggest influence. Amazing all around. Remember, its not about being the best, its about putting out great music that will stand the test of time and both of my mentions have done that. As have many others and there will be more to come. Keep on drumming!
