IMO If he spoke less, he would have been legendary. What made Neil peart massively respected is the fact that was silent unless he had really something to say
"We were all in lockdown." No, Mike. YOU were in lockdown. You also made comments about how "considerate people" are the ones who stay home. Not all of us have expensive houses with studios that are paid off. It must've been nice to be able to work on music and not have to pay a bunch of bills like the rest of the world.

Most people agree that 10,000 hours of practice and instruction at your instrument of choice is enough to be proficient. He probably did 20,000 hours in his first 5 years playing drums!😁 Mike, You are now "Your favorite drummers favorite drummer"...
At 56 years old, my experience was similar to Mikes. Ringo came first. I got my first set of drums on my 13th birthday, then 11 days later, my other hero, John Bonham passed away. Soon after, I heard "Spirit of Radio", then I learned about, and followed Neil. I wore out my "Exit, Stage Left" album! I've always just played for fun, mostly therapeutic reasons. Mike Portnoy became an international icon.
Great interview. Mike was one of my biggest inspirations growing up. I was always super stoked when he was on the cover of MD or a new DT album came out. He introduced me to so many other great bands as well as I followed him from band to band and tracked those musician’s work.

When I heard the news, I didn't know what to do, so I listened to "Anthem" - as the first song Neil recorded with the band. I'd heard it a thousand times, and yet I was BLOWN AWAY by the drumming. With a possible exception of Lennon, there is no rock star loss like Neil Peart.
Mike and myself are VERY similar when we got into Rush it seems. I first heard Mike say about 10 years ago or so that "Signals" was his 1st tour as well. "Moving Pictures" was what sold me to the band and became a fan for life, but I 1st heard them on "Permanent Waves" and the single "Spirit of Radio", but it flew over my head because, I only _imagined_ music like that with crazy changes and time signatures . . . it sounded like 4 songs! I was just getting into Progressive Rock (the start though was in 1977; *Kansas* Point of Know Return, it changed my life as much as Star Wars that year), then as a 16/17 year old. My 1st purchase was "Exit... Stage Left" and then "Signals". But before that, I was in _continuation school_ to get my high school diploma, and there was this BEAR of a dude with long brown hair who was a very mature and articulate 18 year old who told me all about Rush and Moving Pictures (I really never heard them on the Radio until PW, even on the LA FM/AOR Stations), and it just intrigued me. So that was my 3rd Rush purchase. A long gone Dept. Store that was across the street from my 2nd job had a "LP" sale, and they had ALL the albums Rush put out, so within a month, I bought their entire catalogue and just ate it all up. But then I discovered "Cygnus X-1" on Farewell to Kings, and then the masterpiece album "Hemispheres". Kansas, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, ELP, UK, Genesis and whatever I could find became an obsession. I then became a Metalhead around 1981, and both genres filled my life with eclectic and HEAVIER music. But then *Queensrÿche & Fates Warning* opened another door, and followed them and other bands that created "Prog Metal" (a die-hard FW fan till the end!), and inspired the bands to come, and *Dream Theater.* A band I learned about from the back of a Kerrang Magazine, that had an ad that said; "If you like Rush and Queensryche, you'll LOVE Dream Theater!", a few months later, I bought "When Dream and Day Unite", my "3rd" favorite album by DT (and I still have the Lp). Again, became a fan for life. I'm still into the new music, always searching for something virtuosic and unusual (and... "Balls and Chunk!"). . . . which made me listen closer to Drummers, and what they were doing (even though I was a Guitarist, sort-of :p). It's pretty amazing and kind of _Prophetic_ that Mike has done lots of Interviews before the news that he re-joined DT as we catch-up to what was already filmed, it was like something was in the air. I'm excited to hear what they will create next, but I HOPE they all re-invent themselves to offer something SPECTACULAR and surprising (no pressure 😛).

More so than his drumming I appreciate Mike’s attention to detail and passion for music.
It's his passion and love for music that makes him my favorite drummer and musician. And I'm not a drummer, I play bass.
What about Steve Smith, Deen Castronovo, and Atma Anur…. Portnoy has offered nothing new for decades. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Dream Theater as musicians are top notch with either Mike on the drums….: but the vocals suck

The chunk about Neil has me in my feels big time. I’ll always miss him.
When I heard the news, I didn't know what to do, so I listened to "Anthem" - as the first song Neil recorded with the band. I'd heard it a thousand times, and yet I was BLOWN AWAY by the drumming. With a possible exception of Lennon, there is no rock star loss like Neil Peart.
