Another great totem video! Really appreciate it Jared. Thinking about video ideas for you I remembered you saying you didn’t like the Petzl Pirana. Have you discovered better or alternate ways of controlling your speed with it? Maybe a video on the Pirana demonstrating its “modes”? I see a lot of people out there using it , at least in AZ, so it might be a good topic. Andrew is my name, AH are my initials.
Andrew 👍. I used the Pirana for a bit when I first got one to try (13.5 years ago) and after trying to make it work, I just always felt like I was struggling to get the speed control I like. I've seen some clients show up with them for class and have problems with them. I really haven't tried using one much in the last 10 years because in my opinion there are better options out there (CRITR, HooDoo, SQUIRL). I'd take any of these devices over a Pirana again. I'm not sure I have the right experience to make a Pirana work to do a video just on the Pirana and how to control speeds and be happy with it. I'd end up bashing it and telling all that I do not like with it and why I feel there are better options out there :)
North Wash Outdoors Lmao, as hilarious as that might be I suppose ruffling climbers sensibilities wouldn’t be productive. Another idea I had that you could do at the tree was a consolidated video on various releasable anchors & rope blocks using the Totem, Fiddlestick, carabiners & the rope itself (macrame knots etc.).
One thing that I disliked rappelling with the totem is not being able to add friction when using some sort of backup attached to the totem. I'm frequently the first down and and on occasion I prefer to use a VT prussik. The VT makes it impossible to swing the rappel strand around and behind the device to add friction on the fly. I think I'm in the camp of the totem being a great rigging device, but with options I prefer more for rappelling.
The Totem is frequently demonstrated with a VT being tied onto the device and this certainly would hinder wrapping that rope up and around to add friction. When I'm using a VT as a back up, or just as a 3rd hand if I'm gonna be stopping mid rappel, I prefer to attach the VT to a tether. This keeps it our of the way of the rappel device and independent of it. Helps to allow you to be able to remove the rappel device if necessary - such as in passing a knot. (Hint, stay tuned for next weeks video).
I have, but generally only after rigging a Jester contingency anchor with it and then pulling it straight off the anchor. It’s already setup for you in that scenario so it’s quick and easy to rappel on it in Stich plate mode. Not a bad way to rappel, but still prefer the CRITR as my main device.
70’s Porn music 😂😂. Free music for content creation is free for a reason 👍🏻 Trying to find background music that fits sometimes takes me more time than editing the dang video. I like to have that little undertone of sound in the background, but I don’t always get it right 😊. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Hey that helps! 🇨🇦🇺🇸👍
Awesome

Have you ever really used it as a stitch plate? I carry a stitch plate as a backup and find it really suxs.
