I just bought the 1inch Active Aqua with the 1inch pump from Active Aqua that sells on Amazon. I set this up in my bath and it will drop 5 degrees every hour. I fill the tub and the water is 75. It takes 5 hours to drop to 50. I then turn it off until the next time I want to use it. The water will raise to about 60. The next time I use it I only need 2 hours. It is a little noisy and produces heat but a very good machine. Thanks for the videos David!
Hi Paul, thanks for the info. I'm also looking to set up a cold plunge in my bathtub. I'm new to this so hoping you can provide details. Which chiller do you use with the Active Aqua pump (the Active Aqua or EcoPlus or anther chiller)? Are you running the chiller and pump all the time or just 5 hours before you plunge? How often do you drain your bathtub...every time you plunge or ever few days etc? Thanks so much for any info you can provide. I can't find much info out there from people who use a bathtub as their plunge, only the barrels and troughs.
Next month (Sept) marks the 2 year anniversary of ordering my "Plunge" refrigerated tub. It uses the Active Aqua 1/4 HP chiller. I have it outside (here on Maui) and it keeps the water at the right temperature with ease. For me a 1/2 or 1HP chiller wouldn't be worth the added cost or buy or operate. One of those would get the water down to temp faster after I clean and refill the tub, but I can wait. I don't even keep the boost on and it keeps the water to temperature with ease. Outside installation isn't a problem. It has been outside for going on 2 years. The only problem I've had was a temperature probe went bad. Plunge sent me a new one and a link to an installation video. I was tempted to keep using the bad probe as it kept the water at 32.5 degrees. I did quite a few dips at that temp. but my electric bill shot up. So I fixed it. I change the temp quite often. Sometimes down to 39 but mostly in the upper 40's. The 1/4 HP unit costs a little over $700.
Another great option is the Polar Bath Chiller Pro. It offers 4x faster cooling and can be controlled via a mobile app, at an unbeatable price. Definitely worth checking out!
Doesn’t eco plus pump filter the water? Or would I need to get a filter system? How often would you need to clean the water for the tub? Thanks again for posting this.
You should wrap that barrel in an adhesive aluminum face insulation. It’ll keep it from absorbing sunlight and also keep it from transferring the heat as fast. You are running $65/month in electricity atleast.
which one of these chillers have you found to be more reliable? meaning it has worked without problem and is held up for several years? thank you for the video. I did subscribe
Thank you! Both are extremely dependable. The big difference is the size, shape, and color. I personally use the Active Aqua on most but the Eco isnt worse, its just a different size and I like the AA better.
Currently doing cold plunging in a soaking tub with ice blocks. I only got it to 61 degrees. Definitely want a set up at some point. I live in Florida.
How you rate a chiller in cooling capacity is relative to a temperature in the evaperator. Trying to decide between Active Aqua 1/4 and 1/2 HP. I have 100 gallon inflatable barrel, kept in garage in Minnesota. So protected from sun but not sure how warm it gets during summer. Definitely not as warm as outside, but I'm worried warm enough that the 1/4 HP won't be able to reliably keep it at 45 or below. Normally I'd go with 1/2 HP to be safe, but I'm replacing an all-in-one one that broke a few weeks after getting it and am currently unemployed so the couple hundred dollar difference is meaningful. Does anyone have any similar circumstances and can weigh in? Also - does Active Aqua usually have good Black Friday deals. While I'm anxious to get back up and running, if they do, it may be worth waiting for a few more weeks. Thanks!
What do you think about using a chiller with an inflatable Spa/jacuzzi like the Lay Z spa? Im thinking it already has a pump incorporated so I wouldn’t need to buy a pump plus with the jets I wouldn’t get that thermal layer. What’s your thoughts please?

I just got the vevor industrial water chiller. I got it off Amazon I’m a little worried after watching this video that it won’t work super well. The in and out for the water looks like it doesn’t move very much water. I want to use it with my XL nurecover plunge. Should I send it back and get one of these? I live in Canada and wanted to be able to cold plunge in summer months and also use my cold plunge inside during the winter.

Why don’t you have a kit of links to boy barbs and tubing for the 1.5 hp chiller. Please tell what size barbs and tubing you need for 1.5 hp chiller. My 1.5 inch tubing doesn’t fit over the 1,5 hp chiller adapters !
Hi David, My chiller Active Aqua 1 HP started to rattle when the compressor turned on. It then cooled the water to the desired temperature and shut off. It then started rattling again when the compressor restarted. Is there any solution or fix for this? Thanks!!! I don't have any problem with the noise, but it feels wrong to have it rattling.
We have winters in Canada and would like to have the pump running 24/7 to prevent freezing. Will this chiller stop chilling if the pump is still running 24/7? How to set that
Hi David, I’m concerned about the set up I should get, the Ice barrel 300 or 400 with the eco plus 1.5 hp, as I live in Miami it gets quite hot in summer, I like the ice barrel 400 as I can be in a standing position, but as it doesn’t have insulation I’m worried a little bit about the electric bill. What do you recommend?
Hi, how much time does it take to chill the water to 40 degree Fahrenheit on the first setup or a fresh fill ? Considering the quantity to be around 500 Gallon.
Got a question! I picked up the 1.5 eco plus chiller. Had it for about a month and love it along with my cold plunge build. I see the temp ranges from 38-104° I decided to set the temp to 104. Does it eat up water? While buying it I was thinking I could have a hot tub as well as a cold plunge. I set it and the temp isn’t rising as quickly as I would expect for something heating water
I bought the 1 1/2 hp water chiller from vevor along with most of the components you recommended in your first kit link. only issue is there are still some unanswered questions that i would rather not try to figure out by trial and error. I want to know how to make sure all hoses, water pump and fittings are properly put together as to not leak water into my garage and i cant find any articles videos or links to think information so far. Got any suggestions?
PLZ HELP! If i bought a 1.5 hp chiller can i just buy all the stuff you have linked for the 1 hp and it will all fit ? Like the 1 inch tubing withbthe adapter etc etc
I’m surprised you list the aqua filler as your number one chiller because I watched your review and you clearly were showing disappointment in the noise compared to the other option that you were reviewing. I can’t remember the name of it. Having said that, you still would go with the aqua Char as your best overall chiller?
@@Patriots2004 Great comment! Yes I would still currently vote Active Aqua for the fact that I have had no issues with it at all, other than the noise. I do wish it was more quiet. But the other one EcoPlus connection cracked and was a problem to replace. Still a great option
If remodeling a bathroom, no walls, everything is down to the studs.. Is it possible to plumb the EcoPlus 1.5HP into a shower? Similar to the video "Making Your Shower Deliver ICE COLD water for Wim Hof Cold Showers", but using a commercial chiller. I like those recirculating pumps that go under the sink, but in this case recirculate ice-cold water and have it come out of the shower head. I'd turn it on a few hours before I use it, so that it's not constantly working.
I just bought all of the components for the 1 HP active Aqua kit. Included was an adaptor, Spears 1436 PVC tube. The smallest outer diameter of the tube end is 1 3/8 in. How can I use this with the 1 in inner diameter included in the kit? Shouldn't the minimum diameter of the tube side be 1in?
Great video and very helpful but you have the Eco Plus chiller facing the wrong way. The display is on the front and the fan should discharge hot air away from the wall not into it. It will also work better and not draw as much current if you turn it around.
I recently ordered the 1 hp eco plus chiller and it recommends the eco plus 1056 gph pump. Is it ok to use the 1267 gph eco plus pump? I dont want to cause any issues/damage to the chiller.
The prices of the EcoPlus Water Chiller, price today on Amazon Prime day for the 1hp is $1299 and 1/1/2 hp is $1407. I'm not sure if i should spend the extra $100 for the 1 1/2?
@@DavidMausJr I bought the 1 1/2 hp last week on amazon during prime for $1407 because it was only $100 more that the 1hp. The price went up now to $1,839 on Amazon for the 1 1/2 hp. I just got it yesterday. now i have to buy a tub and the connections.
I live in AZ and my chiller will be outside. 100+ temps in the summer. How long have you had these chillers outside? Curious to the know life expectancy. And did you see a significant rise in your electricity bill?
Hey David, I have been enjoying your videos. I wish I would’ve seen them before I made my purchase. I bought the Polar Monkeys Brain Pod 2.0 a couple of months ago. It took 7 weeks to arrive. I set it up and all was well until on the fifth day in, the pump went out. I have to send it back and they are replacing it with a new one. I am obviously now lacking confidence in their pump/chiller set up. Down the road I will probably consider replacing it with one of the chiller setups you have recommended. My question is this. The 1 1/2 hp Eco Plus you show in your video also has what looks like a large filter canister but it is not shown as coming with the chiller unit and is not in your list of recommended items. Could you please let me know what brand it is and where to get it? Thank you and keep up the good work.
Im sorry that happened. They are a good company and i am sure they will make it right, but the wait it frustrating. Actually, that entire setup was Polar Monkeys original plunge and it was great, but slightly overkill. You wouldnt ever need a filter that big, unless you had a rotating plunge with 50 nasty, sweaty bodies getting in every day. It kept the water very clean but it is a legit pool filter. Let me know if you want me to send you more info on that but i wouldnt say its necessary.
I bought a Mountain Top Recovery unit and it isn't working properly. Their website is down and i think they are out of business. do you know who repairs these chillers?
That’s my biggest caution to people. There are so many chiller companies and cold plunge companies that came out, bought cheap stock from china, sold out, took their cash and ran. I don’t know anyone to recommend but maybe an AC repairman can help. Similar product.
@@DavidMausJr It's actually my daughters unit and she paid like $4K for it I think. I'm kind of handy with these things but I live 1000 miles away. Do you have any recommendations on a chiller?
My 1/2 horse active aqua leaks like a sieve, not just condensation. I've had it for a year and packed it away this past winter. Have you had that experience with you half horse chiller?
I'm confused man, the chillers don't have a pump built in? I've never heard about this. You have to turn the unit off when you get into the tub? I have an Ice Barrel 500. The chiller that Ice Barrel is promoting doesn't seem to require an additional pump. Thanks in advance. Love your videos.
I havent used it and havent heard many great reviews on it, but im sure that will change. They seem to be diving into cold plunging head on. Maybe a review some day...
Just my 2 cents on the penguin. Ordered the chiller may 27th 4-6 weeks out for delivery. 6 weeks came and they said they were redesigning the unit another 2 weeks. By this time I was in The process of moving so I asked if they could ship to my new address. They said they would….and then the chiller shipped to my old address so I spent a week or so trying to hook up with the guy who bought my old place. Finally get the chiller hook it up annnnnddd it does not cool the water. Now I will say that penguin gave me a $100 back for my troubles with the address. And now they are willing to ship me a new unit or give me a refund. I’m not too sure what I will end up doing but so far my experience has been an expensive nightmare. That said they are giving me options.
Man @@jasonburandt8652 i am so sorry about that. Super frustrating. This is why i tend to talk about and recommend the Active Aqua and EcoPlus. You can order today (on amazon) and have typically in less that 7 days. I hope that gets sorted out so you can get cold soon.
@@DavidMausJr yeah I agonized over the decision. I watched your DIY video a few times. Ultimately what sold me on the penguin was 2 things I liked the bracket that holds the filter which means no drilling and I liked that it was American made. I will say the filter and bracket is awesome. However what I know now I wish I had gone the other way and went the DIY route. Thanks for your videos they are very helpful.
I bought the EcoPlus 1.5 HP chiller using your link along with the 1" flexible PVC tubing and I'm stuck on the install. I can't figure out how to connect to the EcoPlus inlet/outlet. Do you have a video that covers this or can you give me any advice? TIA
The EcoPlus should have came with a few adapters that you can use. If you have IG, send me a few pics or videos of what you got and i will help you through it. @dmausjr is my IG
@@DavidMausJr Thank you for your support...I was able to get everything working after you walked me through it. Appreciate you and keep up the great content!
I’m about to be doing the same install with a Vevor 1.5 HP. Any insights into how to connect the flexible hoses? It’s not intuitive based on the manual I’m seeing or the fittings I’m buying from the 1.5 DIY install page you have on Amazon.
Thank you so much for your videos! In this one, you mention a inline pump. Your kit only recommends a submersible pump (as far as I can see). I'd like to use an inline pump. Which model would you recommend, considering that I'm using a 1/2 HP EcoPlus chiller?
@@DavidMausJr thank you! I have a really silly question: In the winter, will the chiller also keep my water at the configured temperature even if the ambient temperature is much lower? For example, if I set it to 50 degrees Fahrenheit but the outside temperature is 35 degrees Fahrenheit?
Thats a great question that I am trying to find the answer to. I dont have that probmlem much in FL, though i did run mine all winter last year and the temp got lower than my set temp and it seems to stay there. I am curious if anyone else has had any experience with that in colder climates. @@KieranKavanagh
@@DavidMausJr thanks again. Your videos are the best I've found on these topics. I'm following your advice and it is really helping to get started with all of this stuff. You're awesome!!
I bought the 1.5 hp eco plus chiller from the link you provided. The instructions say that without backflow protection, the chiller needs to be installed above the highest water line. But your setup is different. Do you have backflow protection?
i do not and it works just fine. I think a lot of these companies have to put a bunch of disclaimers as a way out if anything goes wrong. Like the Active Aqua states its not meant for outside (even though it creates more heat that a Bitcoin Miner) and i have had mine outside for over a year and not a single issue.
Same question. Do some chillers sold by cold plunge companies come with pumps integrated? When buying a complete kit I never see mention of separate pump.
Was kind of confused when you mentioned the GPH pump requirements for the EcoPlus 1.5hp. You said it requires 1300 GPH pumping power but most pumps don’t go that high. Then you say that’s why it’s a great option. Sounds contradictory. But I probably misinterpreted. I have the 1200 GPH Danner pump. Is that enough for the 1.5 EcoPlus?
What do you think about these compared to the Ice Up chiller? I like the idea of having the pump filter and ozone all in one unit and not having to do too much diy.
Its actaully a great all in one (the only hold up and why i recommend these is time. You can typically order Active Aqua or EcoPlus and get in a week, almost all other chillers take weeks or months for some crazy reason.
The eco plus models seem like they are higher quality and built better. Any downside? Their 1/2 hp is rated for 100-250 tanks. Sound about perfect for an ice barrel in mild weather here in WA.
It can be. Depends on the temp outside and what tub you use. The chiller only pulls high amps when it is chilling the water. Once it reaches the set temp it turns off.
Great video! I have been watching your videos to build up my own DIY system like yours, maybe you already have a video explaining this, but last video I saw of you, you had the whole set up inside of the house, why did you move it to outside? I was thinking the indoor system but curious to see why you moved it to outside. Thank you!
Thanks!! So it was great inside but i found that most of the cold plunges condensate a bit, make noise and generate a little heat. The components are fine outside so it just made sense to move out. I will be producing more and more videos (since going full time RUclipsr) so be on the lookout! :)
I have the active aqua 1/2 HP chiller. Works great. I live in Southern California and my ice bath is outside. I set it to 45 degrees and is usually around that range
I would love to see a video on a tub set up in a climate where the temps range from 5-95 degrees. How can you be pumping water when it is below freezing out side. Wouldn't the water lines freeze?
Hi Dave, John from sunny and hot Arizona here. I have the DIY you showed with ice barrel and 1/2 horse Aqua. This time of the year it only gets down to 63 when I get home. Taking the plunge and buying the 1 1/2 eco from your site. Love me some 37 degrees. Can't wait to try it. Thx again for your reviews.
@@cotswald03 I run the pump 24/7 but the eco works so well that depending on the outside temp I kicks on for a few minutes and then shuts down.

Yes all the 1” components should work well
do you need to have an inline pump or a submersible pump to assist the chiller? Does the chiller not have its own pump?
based on your experience, in your opinion, what is the best overall chiller to connect to an ice barrel 400?

I’m sure that’s possible, I just wonder how fast it will cool water down that is pumping out fast for a shower. Be interesting to see that
Bought the 1/2 hp for 150 gallon tub. I’m in NH. With ambient air around 65 it’s taking a long time to get even to mid 40’s. What’s wrong?
which is quieter in operation the active aqua or the eco plus?
Eco Plus is quieter when running
What’s the life span on that 1/2 hp active aqua? How long have you had it and are there any problems?
Ive had mine over 2 years and still works
@@DavidMausJr thank you.
will i damage my 1 1/2 hp water chiller if i use any* pump below the recommended strength?
No it shouldn’t damage the chiller. Just won’t get as cool as fast as you could.
How about if the pump is slightly higher* than the reccomended strength?@@DavidMausJr

I just bought all of the components for the 1 HP active Aqua kit. Included was an adaptor, Spears 1436 PVC tube. The smallest outer diameter of the tube end is 1 3/8 in. How can I use this with
the 1 in inner diameter included in the kit? Shouldn't the minimum diameter of the tube side be 1in?
Great video and very helpful but you have the Eco Plus chiller facing the wrong way. The display is on the front and the fan should discharge hot air away from the wall not into it. It will also work better and not draw as much current if you turn it around.
You are correct, its how i had to set it up with the Polar Monkey setup but i totally agree with you.
I recently ordered the 1 hp eco plus chiller and it recommends the eco plus 1056 gph pump. Is it ok to use the 1267 gph eco plus pump? I dont want to cause any issues/damage to the chiller.
That shouldn’t cause any issues.
Also, do you use chemicals to keep it clean like a hot tub?
Just ordered 1 1/2 ho Eco Plus chiller for my barrel plunge. Would like an external pump what do you recommend? Thanks liked the video and subscribed.
Awesome! I really like the active aqua 1100 gph pump. can be used in line or submersible. I have a few good videos on that
Do you need a pump with the chiller?
The prices of the EcoPlus Water Chiller, price today on Amazon Prime day for the 1hp is $1299 and 1/1/2 hp is $1407. I'm not sure if i should spend the extra $100 for the 1 1/2?
1hp is plenty
@@DavidMausJr I bought the 1 1/2 hp last week on amazon during prime for $1407 because it was only $100 more that the 1hp. The price went up now to $1,839 on Amazon for the 1 1/2 hp. I just got it yesterday. now i have to buy a tub and the connections.
I live in AZ and my chiller will be outside. 100+ temps in the summer. How long have you had these chillers outside? Curious to the know life expectancy. And did you see a significant rise in your electricity bill?
Great comparison! Do you think a 1/2hp would be adequate for low 50’s water temp in Southern California?
Yes, absolutely! Mine did a great job in Tampa FL.
Can you please give me a recommendation on a water to water chiller so I can heat my pool with the heat?
Is there a setup that doesn't require you turning anything off when you get into the tub?
I think much more economical to use a converted freezer for your home setup. Don't have to constantly cool water as a lot of the cold is retained.
Filled with salt water so it doesn't freeze?
Do you always need a water pump?
Do u find better results laying down or standing in a barrel
I like both, think squatting in the barrel a little more.
My 1/2 horse active aqua leaks like a sieve, not just condensation. I've had it for a year and packed it away this past winter. Have you had that experience with you half horse chiller?
Man thats a bummer, where does it leak from? No i havent had any leak issues with Active Aqua (yet)
What’s your opinion on the penguin chiller? Seems like it was made for the ice barrel.

Thank you so much for your videos! In this one, you mention a inline pump. Your kit only recommends a submersible pump (as far as I can see). I'd like to use an inline pump. Which model would you recommend, considering that I'm using a 1/2 HP EcoPlus chiller?
Hey! thank you for the support! You can use that same pump as an inline OR submersible pump. Its great!
Is there not an affordable small chiller for a small ice bath tub?
There are a ton of other cheaper options, but not all are going to work the best
What do you use for water filtration?
i legit use a small strainer. It works great.
Do you know if I can use 3/4” vinyl tubing with the Ecoplus 1 HP? I know it’s set up for 1” vinyl tubing
Nope it only takes 1” on the 1hp and up that I know of. Unless anyone else can confirm otherwise
how long does it take to get cold? i guess a long time, so you have to keep it on all the time?
it depends on the ambient temp, but in summer in FL it was taking about 5-6 hours from 80+ to 40s
You're the best. Deserve all the success out there. Appreicate your response. @@DavidMausJr
Super helpful video! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
What are the chillers intended for and why don’t they come with pumps?
There isn’t a way to use them without a pump, correct?
Same question. Do some chillers sold by cold plunge companies come with pumps integrated?
When buying a complete kit I never see mention of separate pump.
Any recommendations on an inline pump with 1 inch inlet/outlet? Plan on buying the eco plus 1.5 which has the 1 inch connections
The active Aqua I recommend in all my chiller kits can be used as both and works great as an in-line pump
@@DavidMausJr Ok thank!
Is that enough for the 1.5 EcoPlus?
for sure! That is what the site said but thats insane, you dont need that much to have it work. 1200 is solid
@@DavidMausJr awesome that’s good to know. I appreciate the clarification man. Thanks!
@@DavidMausJr yeah im seeing 10 weeks for the Ice Up. Sheesh.
Thanks for the great info.
can I use this water chiller in my Jacuzzi tub?
For sure!
How much of a chiller do I need to do a 40 degree shower? Maybe 30 gals of ice water, then recharge?
The eco plus models seem like they are higher quality and built better. Any downside?
Their 1/2 hp is rated for 100-250 tanks. Sound about perfect for an ice barrel in mild weather here in WA.
For sure! They are great!
Is 10 amps too much en electricity bills ?
It can be. Depends on the temp outside and what tub you use. The chiller only pulls high amps when it is chilling the water. Once it reaches the set temp it turns off.
Wondering if i should exhaust it into a sauna. Maximize energy
why not!
A 1/10 works great for me indoors to the high 50s
nice!
is there a chiller that heats?
im pushing 2000 GPH on a 1hp aqua chiller with a stock tank 110 gal in SoFlo takes about 8hrs to cool from 80 F to 42 F
Nice work! In the SoFLo heat you need a lot of water flow so youve got the right idea.
Any issues with that Ecoplus sitting that close to the wall?
None at all
I had the the plunge and the chiller went out after a year and two months. I don’t think it’s good for outdoor use. I’m gonna try the eco-
ECO is solid! Quiet too
Nice review man. Im getting old. I need to set something up like this to help me out.

Could you just use with a bath tub instead of a barrel?
You totally can! You can really use anything that holds water. Some are just better than others (cleaner, less space, holds the temp better)

I would love to see a video on a tub set up in a climate where the temps range from 5-95 degrees. How can you be pumping water when it is below freezing out side. Wouldn't the water lines freeze?
If water is in constant motion cause it’s being circulated through a pump, it will need a lower temp to freeze
