What the science says about the safety of e-cigarettes

  • Researchers are working hard to determine the cause of more than 500 cases of lung illness affecting e-cigarette users. Eight of those people have died. Even before this outbreak, e-cigarettes divided the medical community. The American Lung Association says bluntly, "e-cigarettes are not safe." But the American Cancer Society says they are "significantly less harmful for adults than smoking regular cigarettes." However, the latest figures show nearly five million children use e-cigarettes. “CBS This Morning” co-host Tony Dokoupil set out to see the science for himself.

As a 15 year smoker who recently switched to vaping I can confidently say I can breathe much easier now. I do agree that it's a healthier alternative to smoking but that's what people need to understand: it's an alternative. Yes it's unhealthy compared to not vaping but it wasn't made for the everyday person, it's for people who want an easier and safer way to leave Tabacco. The only reason why it's no getting praise is cause it's not profitable to the government since it's not taxed like Tabacco products.

I am still in middle of the augment yes it might be safer than cigarettes and smokers turn to vaping but really only changing the habit and smokers dont really quit they just keep to vaping from now on as sometimes it is not the nicotine it is just the habit of holding and smoking they like. As not really seen a smoker that is vaping stop vaping. But i do think money is involved and is driving all of this as tobacco companies spent billions to try and stop the research to how bad the cigarettes were to your health years ago even paying doctors to give them out and get people hooked on them. So am just not sure as it is money driving so can't trust much on research as it took years to finally come out how bad cigarettes were so might one day come out vaping is worse or might not. but you are right on the tax and the government not liking lost revenue so might start taxing e-cigs soon to gain it back.

@H1t1 Well, he does have somewhat of a point, when he says that we don't really know the effects on the heart yet.
Moreover, the experiment they did on the rats is hard to interpret in a meaningful way, but it's probably close to reality; now the question is whether or not 2.5% is a huge deal or not, in comparison to fast food or other "daily" stuff.
Finally, in my opinion, he clearly shows bias when he concludes that e-cigs are not better than cigarettes just because the effects on the heart (and only the heart) are similar... while the effects on the lungs are almost nullified.
Now, I am not saying he has been paid by the tobacco industry.
In fact, there are quite a handful of scientists that are naturally biased against e-cigs because it is presented as a holy grail for smokers, while the risks associated with it are not 0%. I am sorry but I don't know how to word this better, so this is going to sound childish or whatever (english is not my first language): basically they are "purists", and only want a perfect solution to smoking, which is "just stopping".
The scientific landscape around vaping is really weird; information, and experiments are almost always biased, against or for e-cigs. There is a lot of money at stakes, because of the tobacco industry and the media that thrive on scare stories; but also a lot of lives. Honestly it's a passionating topic, but one needs to do LOTS of research on their own to be able to have a somewhat objective idea on it.

In my 5 years of research based on science, environment, culture and politics I came to a conclusion a year back that E-Cigs are a much safer alternative then traditional Cigs. Although E-Cigs do carry a potential of harm to its users but the significance of it is much less than the traditional Cigs. In Europe, it is highly advised by many Countries' national health agencies to switch to E-Cigs if anyone wants to quit smoking, in fact they do encourage it via different medical campaigns and public health seminars. In US its an entirely different story. There are many insiders related to Federal and State health departments who also (in a hush tone) accepts the fact that E-Cigs are much safer than traditional ones, however there is a huge Lobby of tobacco manufacturing companies operating in US since the 40s, think of them as equivalent to NRA. Many presidential campaigns and local elections have been funded by this lobby in the past and still they are doing it. This is the biggest and only reason why US is reluctant to accept the safety of E-Cigs, because if they did it, then many in the central and state government will lose their biggest cash cow.

My doctor who is not pro-vaping says after an x-ray, I now have the lungs of a non-smoker and my blood pressure is back to normal. She considers me a non-smoker now. I don't know who in there right mind would want to continue to smoke cigarettes and why make the option of vaping illegal for adults. Now, some drug dealers put vitamin E-acetate into cannabis vapes and people got sick and died according to the CDC. There is NO vitamin E-acetate in e-cigarettes. It's a completely different thing. As for the flavor e-liquid thing. I would not have quit smoking without flavors. And saying its for kids, then why are they not trying to ban cotton candy flavored vodka. 1 thing is sure, vaping is nothing compared to cigarettes: the absence of lung problems (when you run or the stairs), fatigue, horrible smell in your mouth and all over your body, price (vape is pricey but not as cigarettes in my experience), CANCER etc..
    *Don't smoke, VAPE! *
(and don't use the word "e-cigarette" it's wrong IMO, there is no cigarette in vaping)
Good health to you my guys.

The first test has been done many times, and it shows how bad cigs are. But it doesn’t really take into account the time between vaping, where you breathe regular air and clear your lungs of the very small amount of moisture on the cotton. People don’t vape for 2 hours straight with no clean air. But that stuff definitely builds up from cigs like the test shows.
The 2nd testing exposes “2nd hand” vapor to the rats, which I believe is completely different from directly vaping. If that rat was exposed to 2nd hand cig smoke in the same way, I think it would have died very quickly.
I also echo the other statements that VG and PG are not oil-based liquids. Vaping has been around for 10+ years. If they were oils and caused major problems, we would have heard about it a long time ago. I almost totally dismiss the 2nd test and its procedures.

Secondly mice are already proven to not give accurate results for human health experiments
Thirdly mice are smaller which means that the processes and system of them compared to Humans is enormously different
Fourthly if you still believe in the mice experiment then I'd like to point out that in that very experiment, the graph showed how less harmful e cigarettes are, the line for cigarettes went sharply up whilst the e cigarette line was constant and low

Lastly, people who vape don't vape regularly, they'll vape and have a break and in between that break the body has already done some cleaning and recovery if any, smokers on the other hand find it hard to stop and keep increasing their intake which doesn't give ty body any time to clean up and recover quickly nor properly

My cautionary statements were cut out: first, I said safer doesn't mean safe (a line from my colleague Ilona Jaspers)! And I also talked about how complex vaping is! While the well manufactured devices and liquids may be safe enough for cessation devices (to get off evil cigarettes), they can have and produce toxic components. And the use of flavorings that attract adolescents who are getting addicted to nicotine should be stopped/regulated by FDA. “And the use of flavorings that attract adolescents who are getting addicted to nicotine should be stopped/regulated by FDA”
Here is the thing: They all ready are. Vaping is illegal in all 50 States for children under the age of 18 and in some states 21. Flavored or non-flavored. Nicotine or nicotine-free (even though the law is based on tobacco products that contain nicotine).
It is an asinine statement to suggest that flavoring is something that only is used to attract adolescents. Do you know who else like flavors?
      Answer: Adults
Otherwise you have been ban flavored alcohol that are designed to target adolescents. All sugar products that are designed to target adolescents. All arteries-clogging fast food products that are designed to target adolescents.
I don’t know if you remember being an adolescent previously in your life; but there is one constant that all adolescents experience: Rebellion. Doing what you are told not to do. Smoking. Drinking. Sex. Drugs. Rock and Roll. And of course that is going to include vaping now.
The correct response is to warn children of the dangers and public discourse. Banning things does not work; nor has it ever worked. You can limit ease of access.. but that will never eliminate it. Ever. And it’s juvenile thinking to believe you can do so by denying access to adults.
Whatever happened to believing in freedom in this country? You are either free to do what you want or you are not. Not have your life controlled by others allowed to tell you what they find unacceptable. Government’s role is to serve the people. Provide regulation to keep products safe for use and consumers have a realistic expectation of what the product contains.
And so far; there is exactly zero deaths attributed to nicotine vaping products.
      Zero.
When there is another product that has killed 500,000 people a year for the last couple decades... and you are talking about banning a product that will decrease that number because you are worried about the children?
      That’s absurd.
Because do you know who else used to be children?
All 500,000 of the people that are going to die this year, and next year, and every year after that; and all 500,000 would former children would not die if they used a safer alternative.

If people use cigs it will increase the volume of deaths while if people use vape/e-cigs it will make people live longer risking us overpopulation. It seems that both parties on the video has different insights regarding these things.

The question is, did the second scientist use food grade vegetable glycerin and food grade propylene glycol, or did he use cheap, no good petroleum based propylene glycol and petroleum glycerin. Because if it's the second one, then no wonder the rat got a stiffer heart, you're sneaking in petroleum, which has butane and pentane! And even then it's less than smoking. And the first scientist seemed more professional with the lung experiment. Also, the second scientist didn't expose the rat to enough oxygen in between vapes.

the test on the lab mice is completely unrealistic. first, those mice where breathing nothing but vapor, no fresh air at all, in a realistic setting, when you're vaping, you're outside or in a room that has a/c, and you're taking in fresh air in between every puff. second, most lab mice are not healthy, most of the mice that where tested already had some form of cancer.
vaping really is not a public health issue, it's a political issue, because many states are going to be faulting on bonds they pulled out due to the Master Settlement Plan, and instead of states just taking what ever tax revenue big tobacco companies make each year, states instead pulled out bonds with the expectation that these cigarette companies would pay it back at the end of each year, that's the only reason why vaping is a "threat," but your gready lying politicians would never admit that.
