You can tell by the way you talk Ray about fixes and also seeing your filing cabinet your must be of very high standards. I like high standards. And also thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am not an electronics man myself and leave everybody to their own thing but I did learn about diodes and solder. :)
I want to highly thank you both for all your tips video, i just bought my first pinball (from Italy, working great but switch, bulb, bumper, coil and flipper etc are to change or so) without knowing anything about it.. just got my revenge from mars manual and your help so THANK YOU
The lamp board sockets you talk about @20:40 are such a pain. World Cup Soccer has these on the Coin Toss (skill shot), and all 3 of mine have broken. Worst socket design, ever.
Good god, Ray is the Zen master of the philosophy behind quality work. I love this guy. Also, I'm glad I was introduced to soldering when I was in high school, cause now I actually enjoy doing it. It also helps having an electrical engineering background when learning about these systems, though a tech degree would actually be more useful for this type of hands on stuff.
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a way to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Anders Gabriel I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Nice. When I have a lamp PCB out of the game to re-flow cracked header pins, I also re-flow the twist-socket pads if they are very divotted. Cleaning the areas to be soldered with 91% Iso or lacquer thinner helps a lot, before and after. I also like the liquid rosin flux, but a little goes a long way. Also needs to be carefully cleaned up after, but it makes nice shiny clean joints - "Mt Fuji"-style.
Ray, thanks so much for posting these great videos on youtube. I really enjoy the information from such an expert on the subject. Keep it up my friend. Thank you.
thanks for the videos, these are great. these are like Good Eats/Alton Brown for pinball. not just how to videos, but how to,if and why and everything else
Been re-watching these tech tips as I am thinking about getting back to my High-Speed pin here soon. :) And I think I may have a lot of sockets to replace most of them are resty especially inside the lamps. And I noticed on that WoZ board it looked like a green fish.
Helllo About replacing SMD components (on the JJP), there absolutely nothing impossible to do. It's just another set of skills to get ! Baking: well yes the air transport the heat, the solder is not a wire but a mix of microball and flux. In the end it is a real joint, same as with iron. Search "Louis Rossmann on youtube. He fixes iPhone&Mac and probably can learn/train a pro (Ray) to do it. Every single LED is probably listed on providers like Arrow, Mouse or Digikey.
You're supposed to put 'bulb grease' (dialectric grease) on the contacts *before* they corrode. That way the grease prevents the contacts being exposed to the elements so no moisture gets to them, and then they won't corrode in the first place. For replacing SMD components by hand you just need solder paste and a hot air rework station.
Hi Ray, if you were to build a pinball machine today from scratch do you have a recommendation on the type of lamp socket to use? It seems like there are pros and cons to all of these. Thank you
i have an adjustable soldering iron that goes from 20W-50W. i like it because i can increase the heat if i need to. i do not use a gun, way too much heat
Oh and had an interesting but maybe stupid idea. When you replace the stapled down light sockets under the playfield do you leave or replace the one's in the back box? Just a thought I had most likely not a good one but just a thought.
Hey ray grate videos i love watching them, quick question i bought a pinball cab and the 100 relay isn't working properly, i cant find any problems at all. i did notice it wasn't grounded and it must have been at one point because of where the power chord goes on the em board the ground section had a blob of solder on it. so my question is should i put the ground back on the board and can the ground not being connected cause such problems. keep up the good work.
am waiting to check with ray for an "official" answer. my first thought concurred with jimmy - bridge rectifier, but there are other components in that line. flipper switches come to mind also. will follow up with some confirmed ideas later today. thanks for watching & commenting!
Thanks for videos.. I noticed the coin slot doors etc... in the back do you ever sell used but functional parts? Even in a previous video you just thru away the apron do you ever sell those?
We sell TONS of functional used parts in our eBay store! Please visit: stores.ebay.com/GAMEROOM-COLLECTIBLES The apron toss was for dramatic effect to emphasize how whoever put the TNT Amusements sticker on it had ruined the factory artwork. Keep watching and you'll learn ad nauseam about all that. ruclips.net/video/SWFqa8m0Zm0/видео.html Thanks for viewing and commenting!
Hi Ray, I have been enjoying your videos, I am restoring my t2 and I am having trouble finding the correct p/n s for gi and flasher light sockets. the numbers in my manual do not come up when searching.. thanks for your help.
I hope you have learned from me? Even though I am still new to electronics and fixing pins. I just like to pass on some good tips and most of them I have done myself and it makes stuff look better. ;)
In all honesty I think I have learned more from you guys then the other way around. :) Especially these newest vids I have been posting up about getting parts and even putting this pin back to working order. ;)
I wonder has any one made "updated" lighting for older SS games like my H-S? And if not I should look into doing my own update for the lamp sockets. I am not a fan of the chained sockets like in my H-S as if you have one or more out you have to replace that whole chain which is annoying. o.O I guess another thing I could do is put in separate sockets but then I'd have to still link them all up again.
+PinBallReviewer i have a high speed as well, great game!!! i also have a firepower which plays great but has some bad sockets im not entirely sure how to deal with the bulb issues because as you said they are daisy chained
andrew donohue Have you put in new light sockets in? I'd start there especially if the sockets are really rusty. A bunch of sockets in my Space Mission EM are rusty but they still work but for how long. Lol
Like your videos...was wondering..im not happy with the power of the flippers on my Gorgar...all parts...coils..stops..eos..ect are new...is it plausible to put in more powerful coils?..and could there be another issue causing this...thanks !
ray confirms, bridge rectifier. otherwise, it kinda is what it is - an old game. wasn't designed to have "extra" flipper power. modding it otherwise? unknown procedure. ask around! ;)
16:05 How do I suspect that he is talking about Steve Young. I actually love talking to the guy, as he said if you are not open to learning new things......

thank god 4 guys like you.
Thanks for sharing you can always learn something even the little things.

@Anders Gabriel it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Anders Ronan happy to help :D
Thanks for posting these videos. They are super informative. Much appreciated.

Hi Ray, amazing tech tips. Thanks a lot for your videos.
thank you sooo much for sharing your immense store of knowledge with us!

thanks for your advice...its only weak on left sideand everything in playfield area is new so guess i have to look on

Umm.... say what?
If you were building a homebrew/custom pinball machine which light bulb socket would
you prefer to use? After fixing so many different types.
thanks for all the helpful info!

great videos, i just got cftbl. so when ray coming to Kauai? i can use some maintenance.
keep up the videos,thanks

Have you looked at the big "Red" parts book? www.planetarypinball.com/reference/partsmanuals/WMS_Parts_Red_16-9190-B/index.html#/696
thank you.

change bridge rectifier on board yet? that may help flipper
Awesome.
So many parts that I don't have that I really need. ;)
ray confirms, bridge rectifier. otherwise, it kinda is what it is - an old game. wasn't designed to have "extra" flipper power. modding it otherwise? unknown procedure. ask around! ;)
I had a gorgar the flippers are weak on that machine.
had a bad diode on my totan, replaced it and ghosting was gone!!! no argument here
Leaky diodes... I got em, stern.
Can Ray dress up like Todd and mock a repair?
Sure. Send us a fat/creep suit.
those trophies arent all yours mat ;)
Rays experience will disappear. These videos fall short. He said it but doesnt teach it
