I think the one you liked the most looks very generic, but maybe that would be different with a fitting background. With only the logo, I think the 3rd fits the best.
I heard a talk by Chris Zukowski, who is a specialist of marketing games and reviewing Steam page, and he said that even for pixel art games, it's usually better to have a non-pixel art capsule/title.
The thing I don't like about all four logos is that all of the artists made castlemancer one uniform color. I would like to see the two words Castle and mancer separated by color, font, or even proper case CastleMancer.
The reasons you listed is pretty much why people tend to shy away from pixel art capsules. You can use pixel art for your title screen and gameplay but the capsule art doesn't have to match your games art. It's like an arcade marquee or a roadside billboard ad. It's a good idea to approach the capsule art as its own thing.
Pixelart is not recomended for thumbnail art/logos. Just look at the most popular pixelart games: Celeste, Binding of Isaac, Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells, Wargroove, Moonstone Island. All of them use illustrations and a vector/painted logos (of course there are exceptions, like Stardew Valley or Terraria). Studies say that consumers perceive pixel thumbnails as low quality, so keep that in mind for your own game.
I would never have thought 'vampire/gothic/etc' with the first logo. Even after you brought up the possibility, it's like... if I squint, I guess? If it had been red and black, or a lot of delicate aesthetic details, maybe, but not as is.
Ya I really like the aesthetic of the pixel art logos, but I think there was another comment here saying that its generally recommended to go with a non-pixel art logo
I dont think its such a big deal that your logo is pixel art even if your game is, I think you're overthinking it. I would almost reverse your rankings for what stands out to me. Really for a logo you want the one that's most eye catching and you can iterate on making it stand out more on a small thumbnail. I definitely don't think the font and coloring on the logo you made fits, but its fine for a temp one.

That's a great point, thanks for the comment!
The gray one that you selected looks incredible!
Ya that hi-res pixel art is incredible!

Ya that could definitely help distinguish it a bit or make it more readable!
All the artists did great quality work, but I agree with your top pick (matches the style, and stands out well when small).

awesome devlog Michael!
Thanks!

Great note, I appreciate it!

That said I think I dig the pixel art styled ones more, because they're giving the user a very immediate signal that the game is pixel art, too.

I think you should use the art that you made at the end but try to make it in pixel art to fit the art style of your game
That could work, I appreciate the comment!
👏🏻 Great video!
Thanks man!
Broski gave them all different context and then ranked them as if they all had the same task. LoL gr8 vid tho
haha true, after each commission I was trying to give better context than the previous one
@@ByteOfMichael thanks for replying Michael! How can I connect with you so we share some knowledge and potentially spark a friendship even!?
Good call on the logo ranking! Totally agree.. Adding the game character in there certainly makes a difference! Great video!

That's a good callout!
Moral of the story: everything is small and hard to read
Bro I would’ve submitted one for free
haha cheers!
Whyd ya change ya name from marselluh?
Its not super searchable, I felt like Byte of Michael was a bit more catchy!
Did you tell all the artists that the Steam thumbnail was important?
For some of them, I mentioned it in the commission conversation
Just change your art into pixel art
That has some potential haha
