    Tom, I love watching your videos. You do something not many people take the time to do and that is multi camara angles and shots of the same scene. It has to be extremely time consuming, but it is SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH! My hats off to you for the use of such enormous patience on your part! Your knife has a very simplistic clean look to it, I hope it serves you well. Just a side note, my wife and I generally watch your videos together and we have started to go out and about to different locations just to enjoy a cup of coffee together in the out of doors. Thank you for the inspiration my friend! We dont "wink" with our coffee, but, we can't copy everything you do! LOL! Thank you for another video of your fantastic wooded areas! My best wishes to you, Bibsoutdoors

    Hello Mr. C You certainly have some beautiful places to hike and camp. That knife looks like a style I would use. I'm not interested in fancy looks and gimmicks. I like simple, old school designs that work well and are durable. The natural beauty of the wood in the handle is all the decoration necessary for a well designed tool. I have enjoyed your video as always. Take care my friend .

  • @jamesaritchie1
    @jamesaritchie1 6 лет назад

    That is a beautiful knife. I like a small knife. Woodsmen, at least on this side of the pond, only used a big belt knife for two things, self-defense, and skinning and processing very large game animals. They used a pocketknife for all other knife tasks. This has been true for hundreds of years. Anything else that needed done with a blade was done with a tomahawk, a hatchet, or a full-size axe. I've found this still works better, far better, than carrying a large belt knife.
    When metallic cartridges and repeating firearms made self-defense with a knife much less likely, they got rid of their big belt knives and started carrying much smaller knives. I agree with Horace Kephart who said a belt knife should have a blade that is four and a half inches long, one inch high, and an eighth of an inch thick. That's as big as I want.
    I don't even use it very often. A pocketknife with three different kinds of blades is a much better carving knife than any belt knife with one blade, There just isn't any knife task I do that requires a large knife. The only reasons I carry a belt knife at all is because of convenience, and because I just love knives. I'm experimenting with replacing a belt knife with a neck knife that has a three and a half inch blade that's only half an inch high. So far, I've had no problems finding anything it can't do.
    Anyway, that is a beautiful knife, and just the kind I'd love to own and carry. Too man knives are big, ugly, and try to do everything from cut to chop to split, and sometimes even to at. I like old school and simple.

    Allow me to comment on the history of the Sax:
    The Sax was a type of sword (distinct by having only one sharp edge).
    The Saxons (as in Anglo-Saxon) got their name from this type of weapon.
    And it was a dedicated tool of war.
    The beautiful knife you are demonstrating would typically have been a utility tool.
    The stylish decorations on the sheath remind me of the amazing petroglyphs found on especially Swedish pre-Viking ornamental stones.
    A truly remarkable knife!

    Great video again Tom. Interesting history of the Viking knife, but a little out of my budget at the moment. I have proof of direct Viking descendants by name...but am wary of being a ''plastic Viking'' :-). Take care and best wishes to your family.

    I know it's a little late to comment on this video, but I have this knife and I love it! I love the primitiveness of it, and that it is carbon steel, and scandi grind, which makes it easy to grind, and keep sharp. It is always with me on my forest trips, it may not be the most versatile knife in all situations (I have cheap Mora knives that can perform certain tasks better), but it feels special to hold in my hand, it really is a piece of history! (I can sit holding it in my hand even in my living room...). Since it's not stainless, I'm careful that it doesn't stay wet for long, and I oil it often. This (besides my Viking-inspired fire steel from Alvestein) is my favorite replica items of finds from the Viking Age. In third place comes my Øyo Viking axe (which is also a replica from viking finds, and not the best hiking axe (a little light), but I love the historical aspect of it). Add my primitive hand-forged Mjølnir from Grimfrost, and you have my three favorite items that are always with me on my forest walks! Maybe later I will have a financial opportunity to acquire a seax knife!
