I have had nitros from end of nineties and finally sold them all and bought a electric 1:10th 4WD SC truck for racing. It was not as easy as I pictured it. As starters. Try to find Lipos that can handle in 2S configuration on those 4WD modified class powers (only ones we have here). Talked to local drivers and they recommended to buy Turnigy nano tech 2S and 7.5Ah batteries. Well, I bought them for 200€ and after 10 cycles at the track They all had a bit ballooing effect on them. Nice... After talking again to local drivers they said "yeah, they have been having weaker cells than before. You should buy these ones instead". Wait a minute. I just throw away a good chunk of money and this is the name of the game? Try and pray? The Manufacturers C ratings are like Nitro engine manufacturers HP ratings -> Totally nonsense. But at least the nitro engine power ratings does not get that expensive of an venture. It is still fully functional and you can sell it for a reasonable price if unhappy with that engine performance. Ballooned Lipos are only good for garbage. Also you have to be sure to NOT drive the LiPos to the Cut of voltage level. Because it will kill the lipos. But you can't put the cut off voltage level higher in case of race at full throttle at the last round and yous esc cuts you out and it would kill your race. There is no easy way of knowing the current charge level. Also you need at least have three of them to attend the races (one in a car for racing, one in a cooldown and one in a charger). And after the race/drive you still need to discharge or charge them to the storage to maintain them. And that takes ages without external discharger (at least longer than changing the air filter). And if you don't drive for a year, those batteries have lost 20% of their initial capacity no mater what, resulting them to be only good for the training at best if not ballooned too much. I have had a nitro on a shelf for 5 years and everything I needed to do was to get a new receiver battery (of course it was dead, like all batteries) and clean the fuel lines from the excess oil gunk. Well, I switched to 1:10th SC 2WD class (modified) for that battery reason alone. Much cheaper and forgiving for batteries. And you can at least find some battery alternatives for that thing. Also as i'm getting older, the 4WD was too fast for my liking. My reflexes aren't as good as they used to be... For the nitros. I had to buy a nitro monster truck. Can't live without them... Have had them through all my life... The ease of driving, storing and the cool factor... Back in my youth the electrics were like toys and nitros were for hobbyist. I still feel that way... I have never feeled the Powerplant (nitro) to be the biggest maintenance or issue. It was the poorly designed truck and overal maintenance and breakage that annoys me in this hobby. I'm a bit sad that nitros are being less and less popular all the time. And because they are unpopular, the new possible nitro hobbyist are getting harder time to get them working because of their steep initial learning curve and no one to ask for help (locally). Also there is so much fewer options to chose from for the car, fuel and engines. We all lose in this game of "one to rule them all" -nitro bashing/hating.
Hey, you're not alone. I race a Losi Tenacity TT Pro and it was set up from the factory for 2S. I just use cheap LiPos because I haven't noticed a huge difference in batteries at the track. It's more about truck setup and driver skill than batteries, or at least that's my experience. Don't worry. I'm trying my best to get Nitros back in the spotlight.
Get the cheap Amazon lipo batteries. I find them on sale two 5200 50c two cell packs for $25. And there actually good. If you overheating batteries try turning down your punch you don't need Max power to win a race you just need to stay on the track and be consistent.

Fun fact. There was a monster truck team that actually built a full size monster truck with independen suspension and it was called tmaxx. I don't know if it still running.
Nitro is where I began in hobby grade RC. Started with a Traxxas Nitro Stampede, then got a Nitro Rustler...absolutely nothing but fun out of those 2 trucks. At the time (before Lipo)...electric kinda sucked. Now fast forward to 2020...Lipo gets the overall win for me. Love my Nitros and always plan to have them though.
The MAJOR reason I got away from nitro is the 1-way bearing. If it doesn't start right up, in a very short time you will wear out the bearing and the crankshaft. And alot of places I like to drive it I don't want to annoy everyone with the noise. But I still like em for the tru rc experience.
I have a 20 year old nitro rustler sport .15 with the 3.3 😎....positive traction, 3.3 strips planet gears on contact.....so positive traction is a must
I have a nitro T-Maxx classic, but I’m going to convert it to electric. I would like to run it, but the parks around here are touchy about nitros. I still have all the parts to make it nitro again, but it just isn’t feasible to run as a nitro. That being said other than having some issues with glow plugs failing due to a lean carburetor (my fault) I never have had an ounce of trouble out of it. I did upgrade the air filter to something with more surface area, but other than that the engine was completely stock. The truck itself has a lot of modifications which is why I’m converting it rather than buying an electric one.
I agree with everything you said. I've had electric, nitro and 1/5 scale gasser's. Out of all of em I miss my tmaxx the most. I've literally had more problems with electrics than I ever had with my tmaxx. Batteries going bad, chargers going bad, motor temp issues, plugs going bad, ALOT more broken drivetrain parts. With my tmaxx it was pretty much exactly like what you showed in this video. Pour fuel in it, do a quick tune, and just drive the hell out of it. Don't get me wrong I love electric for it's simplicity. But I just don't get the same thrill out of it that I got with nitro.
It took me five years to build up skill to drive a Nitro. I spent all of that time on a tiny 1:18 scale buggy that is now much more tedious than my nitro. Nitros can be a pain inthe butt but once you get the hang of tuning the run nice, fast, loud and long. But electric is better for me because i drive in a public park cause I live in the center of a city.
One of my favorite RCS is the Traxxas nitro Slash 2WD! It's a handful to drive, but once you get the hang of it you won't want to drive much else! I have 1/5 gas trucks, 1/8 electric and so on. I'm currently working on some pretty cool projects that I can't reveal yet. But you may like it if you watch my channel! Love this video, nice to see someone giving props to nitro! I'll be watching more, new sub!
Wow i haven’t had a traxxas since the old first gen rustler way back when.. what motor would you recommend that has a side exhaust to go on a 1:10 scale on road car? I have been searching night and day i was going to try to retrofit the dynamite .28t but it doesnt have side exit exhaust please i would like to know
After burning up my third engine in my t Maxx 2.5 it sat in my basement for 14 years and slowly deteriorated. I'm switching it over the brushless waiting on parts as I type this. Nitro is fun it just can't take the beating I give it. I literally have no mercy. I've never had any issues with electric other than battery's swelling. Plus a can't run nitro in the house and play with the dog.
I really enjoy the sound and smell of the nitro stuff. I can appreciate the sound of the two speed transmission. I did blow second gear out on my Jato 3.3. It’s still my favorite car even though it’s the one I drive the least. I love the sound and smell way more than my neighbors do.
@@10thScaleGarage once my back is better and it warms up a bit I’ll try and get mine going. I bumped up the hex drives to 17mm so it’s got a really cool set of tires on it now. Have a great day my brother and be safe out there!
I don't have the Baja but I have the HPI Savage 4 X 4 Big Block nitro. And a Red Cat Racing nitro Volcano 4 X 4. I have a drill starter on one, a pull rope starter on another one and an on board electric start on the last one.
I recently converted my T-maxx to a DIY electric. 2250kv motor, 150Amp ESC and 6s lipo... It is waaaay faster, more reliable and has much much more torque. I am so happy to be free of carrying extra glowplugs, electric starter, fuel, thermometers and tools. Just grab the car and remote and go out. And the skill? -I had fun with that rebuilding it myself. I did have had to upgrade some chassis parts and driveshafts due to the increased stress, but now it seems allmost indestructable... and I outrun 8S X-maxxes easily... Not going back to nitro even though the sound was fun--- but so is the insane whine of the electric motor!
Sweet! I bet that thing is a little ripper! Did you use EMaxx parts to do the conversation?? My Tmaxx also doesn’t have reverse.... obviously an electric conversion solves that problem.
@@10thScaleGarage It is! :) Nope, I was a cheapa** so I opened the gearbox and locked the gears with some screws and glue... I even made my own motormount and battery trays out of som alu angle I had lying around. :)
I'm ALMOST done converting my old tmaxx classic 2.5 to electric, the motor mount should arrive soon, everything else is in place. The 2.5 was a grueling pain in my @$$, I would have to lean it way out to strat it, then rich it up once it was warmed up, and if I took a break, it was anyone's guess WTH it needed. I quit using it, opting for the much more convenient revo vxl (electric). After a few years of it being lonely on the shelf, I decided it was time to make the change. I miss the nitro a tiny bit already.... On the other hand, nitro was so loud, neighbors and other park goers didn't appreciate it, and I would feel that. Plus you have to bring the starter pack, and fuel. Electric, all you need is a couple hundred dollars worth of batteries and space to run. IDK... One day they'll come out with consumer nuclear powered RC trucks, and the new kids will laugh at us old timers and our batteries, lol. ... I wonder if I should trademark "Consumer Nuclear". Its got a nice ring to it!
It does! Right up there with prestige worldwide! Haha. Luckily i haven’t had to mess around with the tune on this one much either. My Earthquake 3.5 of the other hand, was/ is exactly the same. Pain in the butt to run.
Yes I owned both with over 11 cars and trucks ,nitro for me is more fun and electric for me get boring after a few mins.i now only own I electric because of drag racing.its what I prefer.
Well I love nitro not so much electric but it’s not that easy yes you have to have some skills because you can’t just put gas and go because nitro cars have one have to be broken in and tuned first and some one gave you that car so it probably was already broken in lol
Nitro is way better and I find it quick and instant just like with a lawnmower just full it up take it outside and just go and I have a slash ultimate and a slayer 4x4 and the slayer was way better on wet grounds then the slash was and the slash just look like it was doing full throttle on ice because of the instant torque of brushless motors and it slid into a curb and the axle broke and the next day I went and bought my first nitro and I really enjoyed not having to sit around with the batteries waiting while they charge and storage charge
You can’t argue with the smell and sound of a nitro. I have 2 nitro rc cars and hopefully I’m going to get a third. Love electric but nitro is so much more exciting. Nitro gang for life bro 😎
I feel like nitro could've have had a longer life if manufacturers made newer designs. Besides for racing buggies/truggies the bashers are all 20 year old designs.
I totally agree I'm planning on buying my first nitro but as I look around i see these trucks been around for 20+yrs. I'm not sure what I want for a beginner nitro guy.
clean the carb, change the fuel lines, or check the tank seal. glow plug maybe? its not hard to find the issue. engines take 3 things to run. fuel, glow and air.
I love watching other people use Nitros haha... I dunno, I've always wanted a nitro, just never dared to get into them. For me, electric is where it's at, but I think it'd be cool to have that engine noise. Overall, Nitro gets the win for the "cool factor", and electric gets the win for noooooobs like ME who are scared hahaha. Side Note: You should have done your points system on this ;)
Nitros will never be a stink because one they are two old school and people still like them to this day who likes to weigh a hour or two to charge a battery just to get one run time in and nitro can just run all day long if you have the stuff that it needs and they're way more fun I get people that that give me more kudos about my nitro then a electric they're just more fun because there's more to them
Nice and easy till your piston explodes and kills the engine. 😂 I have a 3.3 tmaxx, its not as easy as putting nitro in and pressing to go stick. There is a lot of required maintenance for nitro motors, even the traxxas. There isnt a single thing nitro does better than electric. Except burn money.😅 Its not the 90's anymore, we have brushless motors and lipos now 😂
I’ve killed plenty of brushless motors, too. Electric isn’t “maintenance free” either. That being said, the Tmaxx is the most reliable nitro vehicle I own. Aside from cleaning and lubing, I don’t do anything to it and it always starts and goes with no issues.
I had traxxas 12 turn motor burn out on me from doing wide open throttle from stop a lot and a axal 27 turn motor burn out on me from dong doughnuts inside on the carpet in a 2wd rustler with the street tires and it melted the fan in the motor and made the windings dark and the house was filled with smoke and my slash ultimate with a 3s lipo with driving it in a small room with going reverse bunch of times made the motor and ecu get so hot and that load is a electric motors worst enemy
@@driftracing08 brushed motors are a little different to brushless, if you're burning out a traxxas titan 12t motor, you're doing something wrong. 😅 If i had to guess, you ran it on 3s?
@@ManuelOrtizification It was on a 2s battery and the people at the hobby shop said run it with the low speed gear and don't do full throttle from a stop and the motor will last longer and electrics works at it's best with a low speed gearing and my rustler 4x4 with the vxl upgrade got 20 minutes of runtime with 13t pinion gear and 54t spur gear with smaller tires and with a 5000 mah 3s battery but it was 10 minutes with the stock wheels with the same battery and 14t pinion and 52t spur

There is nothing like a nitro rc car or not ro rc heli. Electric is cute for the plug and play skill less digital dork generation of today.
Digital dork. Haha.
The MAJOR reason I got away from nitro is the 1-way bearing. If it doesn't start right up, in a very short time you will wear out the bearing and the crankshaft. And alot of places I like to drive it I don't want to annoy everyone with the noise. But I still like em for the tru rc experience.
love the sound of nitro, awesome rc
Me too!
I have a 20 year old nitro rustler sport .15 with the 3.3 😎....positive traction, 3.3 strips planet gears on contact.....so positive traction is a must
Nice! I really want one.
Nice! Bummer about the nitro complainers though. Some people just don’t get it.
@@10thScaleGarage yeah it’s okay though. I have the option to convert back since I’m not modifying anything that can’t be changed in the future.
NITRO IS BETTER! NITROGANG!!!
Haha. A proud member.
I agree. My nitro kyosho mp9 and my nitro 8ight t are so badass sounding and they rip! Is it as easy as my electric rcs?.. nope but so badass!
Kyosho and Losi might have the sickest Nitro engines.
💯
My nitro revo gets more time than my rustler 4x4 vxl
I need a revo in my life.
@@10thScaleGarage get one and put the os .21tm in it and it will not disappoint
lily is super cute and great tmaxx great see it ripping around.. not hearing 2nd gear
It’s there. I promise.
TraxxAss got it right when they were basically the Only ones that had Reverse in a Nitro.
Mine doesn't have reverse, but I don't miss it on this truck.
Luckily the neighbors like my RCs. Haha.
Park guards don't. But budies do.
I started on nitro and my last one was a tmaxx 3.3. Motor ran pretty flawless but the rest of the truck gets real spendy when you don't baby it.
I’d like to stretch my chassis.
Wher do I love what state it’s sweet in the back round
One of my favorite RCS is the Traxxas nitro Slash 2WD! It's a handful to drive, but once you get the hang of it you won't want to drive much else! I have 1/5 gas trucks, 1/8 electric and so on. I'm currently working on some pretty cool projects that I can't reveal yet. But you may like it if you watch my channel! Love this video, nice to see someone giving props to nitro! I'll be watching more, new sub!
Have 3 of them. 2 speed baby.
Nitro rules.
Totally agree.
How did u get it to start without glow plug igniter lol
Traxxas EZ start. It has a wire on the glow plug that connects to the battery in the EZ start. That’s also what powers the starter motor. Cool eh?
Wow i haven’t had a traxxas since the old first gen rustler way back when.. what motor would you recommend that has a side exhaust to go on a 1:10 scale on road car? I have been searching night and day i was going to try to retrofit the dynamite .28t but it doesnt have side exit exhaust please i would like to know
Need it to be bigger than the .18 thats in there stock
Trying to build a no prep nitro on road 1:10 scale
After burning up my third engine in my t Maxx 2.5 it sat in my basement for 14 years and slowly deteriorated. I'm switching it over the brushless waiting on parts as I type this. Nitro is fun it just can't take the beating I give it. I literally have no mercy. I've never had any issues with electric other than battery's swelling. Plus a can't run nitro in the house and play with the dog.
Haha. Excellent point.
I really enjoy the sound and smell of the nitro stuff. I can appreciate the sound of the two speed transmission. I did blow second gear out on my Jato 3.3.
It’s still my favorite car even though it’s the one I drive the least. I love the sound and smell way more than my neighbors do.
I've never driven a jato. They look fast as all heck though.
@@10thScaleGarage once my back is better and it warms up a bit I’ll try and get mine going. I bumped up the hex drives to 17mm so it’s got a really cool set of tires on it now.
Have a great day my brother and be safe out there!
gas>electric>nitro. lol. A hpi baja will run for 45 min on one tank. boooomm! dude you have a beautiful property!
Oh yeah. I love me some two stroke.
Hmmm... to me pump gas looks so boring unless it's in like a scale plane. Rarely see them sent.
You can also get 45 mins out of a savage xl 5.9
And? My rustler will run for 45mins on a single 4200mah nimh🤷🏼♂️ imagine if it was a 7 or 8000mah🤣
I don't have the Baja but I have the HPI Savage 4 X 4 Big Block nitro. And a Red Cat Racing nitro Volcano 4 X 4.
I have a drill starter on one, a pull rope starter on another one and an on board electric start on the last one.
Nitros are WAY better ! I love brushless brutal power BUT... you can't beat the smell, the sound and the feeling of driving a nitro/petrol model !
Only nitro can scratch that certain itch!
Well said.
@@10thScaleGarage
It is! :)
Nope, I was a cheapa** so I opened the gearbox and locked the gears with some screws and glue... I even made my own motormount and battery trays out of som alu angle I had lying around. :)
Ha! Clever.
Pain in the butt to run.
i know this is a old video.but i just bpught the vintage tmaxx. all i have heard is good things about it.🤞🤞
Hope you enjoy it!
Yes I owned both with over 11 cars and trucks ,nitro for me is more fun and electric for me get boring after a few mins.i now only own I electric because of drag racing.its what I prefer.
Check out laegendary RC line up. Will be surprised with the way their trucks handle a beating an it's free shipping in the 50 states.
You said it in one word . . . . REWARDING . . . . N that, is as they say, that !!!
Ha ha. Thank you, sir.
I I bought a 2.5 classic 2w made 3.3 4w dive works great
Nice!
Nitro for the win!!!!
Totally.
I had plenty of nitro cars way back in the 90's and early 2000's. I'm all electric now.
Nice! Do you still have them??
@@10thScaleGarage no. Sold them all off many years ago.
for bashing all afternoon w/ friends it is hard to beat nitro. That said battery is alot cleaner
I agree with you, i like gas cars better, God Bless you, Tony Stevens.
Thanks!!
The high speed needle is too lean
So it seems.
I started nitro but I'm joining the brushless squad
I’m glad (and lucky) to have both!
I’ve got electric and nitro and I find I have a lot more fun running my nitro.
Well I love nitro not so much electric but it’s not that easy yes you have to have some skills because you can’t just put gas and go because nitro cars have one have to be broken in and tuned first and some one gave you that car so it probably was already broken in lol
Oh man I'm definitely going to have to get my Traxxas nitro truck running now. Lol
Do it!
Why not?
Nitro is way better and I find it quick and instant just like with a lawnmower just full it up take it outside and just go and I have a slash ultimate and a slayer 4x4 and the slayer was way better on wet grounds then the slash was and the slash just look like it was doing full throttle on ice because of the instant torque of brushless motors and it slid into a curb and the axle broke and the next day I went and bought my first nitro and I really enjoyed not having to sit around with the batteries waiting while they charge and storage charge
Awesome stuff man, love it, old skewl! In NY I would probably be arrested for running one of those things. Hahah =o) Love the land you gots too man.
2021 will be the year of liberation.
Still cant drive one in "El retiro" in madrid. I'ld definetly get kicked out( electrics are fine though)
Hey lily, what's the best time to wear a striped sweater?
All the time.
You can’t argue with the smell and sound of a nitro. I have 2 nitro rc cars and hopefully I’m going to get a third. Love electric but nitro is so much more exciting.
Nitro gang for life bro 😎
Yes!
I would like to own a nitro but my neighbours will kill me.
I feel like nitro could've have had a longer life if manufacturers made newer designs. Besides for racing buggies/truggies the bashers are all 20 year old designs.
Excellent point.
I totally agree I'm planning on buying my first nitro but as I look around i see these trucks been around for 20+yrs. I'm not sure what I want for a beginner nitro guy.
THANK YOU!!!
You’re welcome
Better? Because it’s dirty and slow? Shots fired. Lol. I have two t Max’s laying on my side yard , you can have em
Dude, that little silicone exhaust tip works wonders at keeping the oil out of the chassis. I was impressed.
@@10thScaleGarage true true. And as much as I love brushless lipo power . It will never have the sound that nitro does
ZZ 10th scale
Haha.
No way my tmaxx was always a tuning nightmare, I'm currently converting to electric
Mine has been solid so far.
clean the carb, change the fuel lines, or check the tank seal. glow plug maybe? its not hard to find the issue. engines take 3 things to run. fuel, glow and air.
Just tune it and it’ll be twisting driveshafts lol
Let’s hope so.
Nitro all the way
That brappy goodness.
To loud and mixing gas is what does it for me
I don’t mix fuel.
One love for nitro RC!👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾
I thought you might like it
At some point I want a T-maxx but I live in suburb 😭
Yolo.
Nitro ftw
I love watching other people use Nitros haha... I dunno, I've always wanted a nitro, just never dared to get into them. For me, electric is where it's at, but I think it'd be cool to have that engine noise. Overall, Nitro gets the win for the "cool factor", and electric gets the win for noooooobs like ME who are scared hahaha.
Side Note: You should have done your points system on this ;)
I usually reserve the 10th scale score for stock/ unmodified vehicles.
@@10thScaleGarage ah, very good point. Definitely was not stock lol.
No nitro but I have a 2 stroke 5th scale lol
Nice! Those are super cool.
Notice: never talked about price. Lmbo
This one was "free to me" which I mention. You can get into this truck for about the same price as a Traxxas Maxx.
@@10thScaleGarage interesting. I thought those engines cost like 4 to 600 bucks
Y’all... I want one! Y’all are killing me.. bank account :(
They're less than a Traxxas Maxx!
Ftx makes one for 200 euros. I have it and it is worth it
“ZZ Top status” 😂😂😂
Awesome!
Thanks!
Like the doggie sweaters lol
Haha. Super cute, right?
I’m here
Always representing!
if you know how to tune nitro is better purely because aa batterys and nitro fuel lasts all day for a small price, to run lipos all day it cost a bomb
Nitro fuel is getting expensive now.
@@10thScaleGarage you think? how much is it where you are? prices hasnt really chnaged much in 15 yrs in u.k
U know what’s even better than stock electric and nitro, a electric conversion tmaxx😆
You mean the Emaxx?
Sorry the only thing better about nitro is when you hear it shift
Nitros will never be a stink because one they are two old school and people still like them to this day who likes to weigh a hour or two to charge a battery just to get one run time in and nitro can just run all day long if you have the stuff that it needs and they're way more fun I get people that that give me more kudos about my nitro then a electric they're just more fun because there's more to them
Nitro involves skill, patience and a bit of engineering. I think that makes it more rewarding.
@@10thScaleGarage so true I have a Traxxas T-Maxx and that's my main nature that gets played with the most I have
Stupid autocorrect 😂
Nice and easy till your piston explodes and kills the engine. 😂
I have a 3.3 tmaxx, its not as easy as putting nitro in and pressing to go stick.
@@10thScaleGarage maintenance for brushless RCs is minimal if you run a sealed motor, compared to nitro, it is essentially maintenance free
If i had to guess, you ran it on 3s?
@@ManuelOrtizification It was on a 2s battery and the people at the hobby shop said run it with the low speed gear and don't do full throttle from a stop and the motor will last longer and electrics works at it's best with a low speed gearing and my rustler 4x4 with the vxl upgrade got 20 minutes of runtime with 13t pinion gear and 54t spur gear with smaller tires and with a 5000 mah 3s battery but it was 10 minutes with the stock wheels with the same battery and 14t pinion and 52t spur
10 rc cars and trucks in my house 2 electric the rest nitro........nitro all the way baby
Good choice.
Nitro rc are a little too noisy for me. I bash at parks and camp grounds so I wouldn't want to be disrespectful and bother others trying to have a good time too. I'll stick to the lipo's
I feel ya. My two stroke got the police called once. Those are in a whole different league though
Nice beard just saying
Haha. Thanks dude.
Ill stick to electric that 30 dollar bottle here in Canada is 110 doll hairs. Closest place is on an island and they want 60 dollars pus tax on top of the 30 dollar for the fuel to get it across the bridge. Boo Canada boo.
Dang! That’s crazy. You need a nitro smuggler. Haha.
@@10thScaleGarage there is no rc shop here in my province and I think a lot of guys get rid of there nitros just because it cost too much to get the fuel.
