  • This video examines the movie "Happiness" (directed by Todd Solondz). Within this video, I (super poorly) discuss the concept of Absurdism and how human suffering largely comes from the false delusions we create in order to achieve happiness. I also contemplate the idea that in order to escape misery, we must first accept our pre-conceived notions of happiness as impossible.

I've been meaning to read The Outsider at some point, and this video is such a brilliant gateway to Absurdism. the examples you mentioned with the characters actually makes sense with your analogy. I think the film does a great job of challenging the conventional perspective of what happiness is, where the idea of fufillment is necessary to our human spirit, despite the morally questionable things humans will do to achieve it. The juxtaposition - the tone of comedy interwoven with dark themes is something I believe is like a coping mechanism for the audience, the film is essentially an exploration of our darker sides because in a way, all these characters could be any of us under the right circumstances.

I have not yet watched the movie, but it sounds like it treats happiness as a goal. Much like Christians treat Heaven. So it does not suprise me that they failed. I kind of view happiness as a fleeting emotion enjoy it and am grateful when it comes. Before going back to my baseline. Paradoxically this has helped me live a pretty happy life day to day

Do you write a script for these types of videos or just do it off the cuff i want to try something similar and I’m not sure if I should just go for it or write something beforehand
