    It gives me hope to see these female monks. Recently there have been many scandals involving monks (specifically male monks) regarding sex crimes, animal abuse, etc. Seeing these female monks who are clearly doing their best to live according to Buddha's teachings gives me hope for our world...

    I remember the shock when I found out that many men and monks carry this downgrading view of women seeking enlightenment. I decided to do my research, to find out if Buddha had said anything about it. I was happy to read that Buddha in fact said that men and women are equal and "of course" can be enlightened too. The only reason Buddha was, at first, hesitant to let women in to temples... was because he was afraid that mothers would travel from all over the country to his ceremonis .. abandoning their children and families, and by this .. causing much sorrow. Anything else has been twisted and changed, and should not be taken as Buddhas word.

    yep i have worked with nuns and monks across the himalayas, and it is still EXTREMELY sexist, appallingly so at the highest levels, and yet the nuns generally make better practitioners (even monks admit this). Men over the centuries have interpreted Buddha;s teachings the way they want to (and Buddha's words were not written down for over 500 years, something many omit).

    The only reason why in Theravada Thailand, bhikkhunīs aren't majorly accepted is not because of the Buddha's words but the prevalence of stupid patriarchy. Patriarchy was never part of the Buddha's teachings. Traditional Buddhism broke the barriers of old India's caste system and the ill treatment of women. If you're a Theravada Buddhist, you have to read the suttas to understand that the Buddha historically encouraged equality among people no matter the gender, age, sexual orientation, or nationality. Like Ayya Dhammananda has said in the beginning, we must go to the suttas to understand what the Buddha said. Prohibiting or banning bhikkhunīs is nothing but a means to control women. If one really has confidence in the Buddha and the Dhamma, then one can imagine the kamma of preventing women from ordaining.

    • @StillNotWanted
      @StillNotWanted 4 года назад +2

      @Robert Raghav I saw your other comment regarding your disgusting view of women. I hope few men exist with a thinking like yours. Patriarchy is real and evil. Try being a woman for once and you will realize how harmful patriarchy is. You think you men are the center of the world can order women to live how you want. Women are not your property and they don't have to agree to men's views. No wonder there is a rise in feminism because of men like you.

    • @StillNotWanted
      @StillNotWanted 4 года назад +1

      @Robert Raghav Why don't you go and read some statistics on world population dude? India is overpopulated and the world is overpopulated and we are exhausting resources like never before. I think this world doesn't need more people than it can handle. Give me a valid scientific evidence where it says women are the unhappiest in the western world? Dude I'm Indian and I can see how Indian women suffer because of men like you.

    • @StillNotWanted
      @StillNotWanted 4 года назад +2

      @Robert Raghav Yea based on some "studies". Sure. Studies that probably exist only in your polluted mind. If women like being traditional then why is there a rise in feminism? It's because they were denied rights. For example, women had to fight for voting rights in the US which only men had before. This won't make sense to you because I bet you never touched a history book. Or else you wouldn't spouting nonsense like this. Women have been oppressed by men for several centuries and you can see that in many cultures. It's because of that damn patriarchy. You must be delusional to think that men have been oppressed just as women. It's a known fact that women have been denied many rights since medieval times. Go read up some history books buddy. And just because men were the sole breadwinners, it doesn't give them the right to oppress women.

    Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was resistant, at first, to women being ordained because He was afraid for their safety among a large group of men who were learning about what has become Buddhist values, and meditation, for perhaps the first time in their lives. (There was no Buddhism before Siddhartha!) A lot of testosterone there, and celibacy was a big challenge for those guys. Still is, in all Buddhist traditions, even for some teachers. It was a difficult decision for the Buddha to make - no easy choice either way. But in the end, He could not stand in the way of another's chance for Enlightenment.

      I’m sorry for how it makes you feel, but you have to remember, that was 2,600 years ago. Women were not usually offered spiritual teachings at all in those ancient times. And men (Buddha had a lot of followers) were not used to living through their upper chakras rather than their lower ones. The Buddha did not have temples with dormitories. He taught in the forest, mostly. A bit like a “spiritual Woodstock”, but with no portaloos!! Students had to go to villages to beg for food. We take so much for granted now.

      No, gender is not an obstacle to Enlightenment, as Buddhism is a spiritual psychology and is not about the physical body, but the mind and the channels of mind in the body . However, there were some old Tibetan Lamas (yes, in our time) who used to believe a woman had to switch into a male body just at the moment of Enlightenment in order to reach that pure state! It was just the leftovers of a patriarchal society. Tibetan Buddhist nuns still have many more vows they must keep than monks do - but now I realise why: it’s because they CAN!!😁

    Dear concerned male Buddhists and followers, I think you have not understood the basic teachings of the Buddha. There is no discrimination, border and divide in Buddhism. Men and women alike can attain enlightenment. There is a Buddha in all of us which we all have to find. Do not create a barrier for women. You have no right to block the path of anyone who seek enlightenment. And resorting to violence, harm or destruction is against the very core teachings of the Buddha

      we do not worship the material. a statue without the ceremony to treat it as an image of buddha, remains a statue. The image of buddha is there for the worshipper to visualise and pay respect to the original buddha (donate daily alms, meditate in front of, practice mindfulness and learn more about teachings). Buddha is a teacher and not a God. He is human like us, but transcended normal humanity into a state of enlightenment and knowledge of the universe. That is why there is only one buddha even though there are millions of his image all around. And Pagodas are worshipped even tho they look nothing like Buddha. We pray and train ourselves to transcend the suffering of our lives, not pray to it for some heavenly blessing that chooses who to bless. Its alittle bit selfish just to say that its "idolatry" without ever learning what it is.

    It’s funny that when I ordained last year, I went in with the questions, “why is a woman shunned upon to ordain?” “What if I were born a female and I had no children to ordain for me if I passed away?” “If Buddhism ends suffering, why is the world messed up?” My very first question seemed not be answered to my liking. Too easy. Simple answers that contradicted the very concept of Buddhism.
    It’s best to answer the questions backwards as I got my answers through meditation and reading about Buddha’s journey.
    Suffering is a part of the cycle of life. Every time something is “born or created” it will age, then suffer, then die. The cycle goes on so long as we hold onto little concepts or ideas that make us who we are, blinding us of the truth that we are all connected energies in a shape of something physical.
    Philosophy of Buddhism is to jump out of the circle of life and live in Nibbana (nirvana). Question 3 answered. Birth = inevitable suffering then death.
    When we give birth to something, we basically sentence it to suffering. So in southeast Asian culture, it’s “believed” that when the parents die, the children ordain and allows the parents to go into heaven and the culture is passed on forward. Well... being linked to question 3, question 2 is answered. It’s not a sin to either be unable to birth or just have the “misfortune” of not having any children. As we concentrate on ourselves to be able to get out of the circle of life, the lack of children (distractions) allows a “better chance” at attaining Nibbana.
    Now for the final part, my original question when going in to the monkhood, I had to did and look at other religions and remember some of the teachings/stories my late father had discussed with other monks and I just eavesdropped in on.
    The story of Genesis. All major religions have this story. Why didn’t Buddhism have it in their bible? Why didn’t Buddhism even have a written bible? Because words have many meanings. And those words can be used in perverse ways to suit the agendas on those who want to twist them. Being a philosophy more so than a religion, it forces practitioners to look deep inside themselves to find the answers that’ve always been there from the beginning.
    My father mentioned the story and the monk that conversed with him neither agreed nor disagreed that it happened, but hinted that it is very plausible that humanity started with a male and female.
    Back to Genesis, Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Adam ate it too, but unknowingly whence it came from. But put it in our own terms.... if someone murders another and there was an accomplice/bystander/lookout, the one who did the murder should rightfully get 50+yrs in jail. The bystander maybe 1/2 the time. How just or fair would it be for the actual murderer got the same jail sentence as the accomplice/bystander/lookout?
    We look at Eve (women) to suffer more by bearing children. Yes, that is quite a lot of suffering a man can’t understand, but when you go back to question 3, you’ll understand how question 1 was answered.
    It’s not the woman’s time to be a monk. Every Buddhist practitioner believes in reincarnation. A woman will, at some point, be born as a man. Therefore, allowing that vessel to ordain as a monk. The woman must endure “suffering” and “suffer more”. Not just by bearing children, but by waiting to be reborn as a man, and it is not guaranteed to happen in the exact, next-life.
    Women are no less than men just because Eve ate the fruit. They value their lives as much as men do. They can strengthen men where their weaknesses may be.
    Every birth results in suffering.
    This is intended to give a viewpoint as to why the culture/tradition of ordaining was only attainable by males only, but gave limited access for females. As with many (all?) cultures/religions, traditions become the way and we forget to ask the whys.
    I do not condemn the female monks for wanting to have an equal ground in spiritual enlightenment, but it is likely they’ll have to reborn as a male in order for the ordained to have all karma wiped away and reach Nibbana.
    I also don’t want to come across as all-knowing as I’m still practicing at home with the 5 simple precepts, and hoped to have given some kind of substance to answer that number 1 question I asked and was asked in this video.
    Saa-toot!🙏🏽

      According to vinaya of pali canon of Therava tradition and Chinese canon of Mahayana tradition, females can be ordained and females have equal opportunities to nirvana.
      It is lawful and permitted by the Buddha himself. Who are those sexist monks? Personal opinions of these sexist monks does not matter. Challenge the case at the sangha council and make the council declare that that monastery where female monks reside is legal religious association. I doubt any elder council member dare reject pali canon.

    No one takes issue with female monks or bhikkhunis at all and it is not a matter of discriminating against women being monks, it is more a matter of being respectful to to the theravada monks rules and the Buddha's words.
    Here in Thailand there has not been a theravada female monk for at least eight hundred years. The continuity of theravada female monks already ended. In fact, I myself or even monks in thailand really want there to be female monks again but sadly that is impossible according to the theravada monk rules given by the Load Buddha. The Buddha said that if a woman want to be a bhikkhuni she has to be ordained by both bhikkhus and bhikkhunis. So, when there has been no theravada bhikkhuni for hundreds of years, monks don't dare to arbitrarily break the rules by ordaining bhikkhuni. This is because they respect the theravada monk rules and the Buddha's words. If they somehow ordain a bhikkhuni, then they can no longer be considered theravada bhikkhu.

      it doesnt work like that..... also it was their own doctrines. The bhikhunis existed all across Asia. The Buddha's mother was the first bhikkhu. They were eradicated by muslim invasions, and never revived back because of circumstances... and sexist cultural view that women are lower than men. Man or woman, gender doesnt matter, both has been confirmed by the buddha to be able to attain immortality. Anti-feminists should snoop around things they dont know just because they want to be edgy and triggered.

      That's the basic concept of spirituality. Spirituality is not a religion and it cannot be created by anyone, be it man or woman. Buddha didn't create a religion. Buddha taught everyone to meditate. Later, people who couldn't decipher his teachings made his teachings into a religion.

      Personal opinion does not matter.
      Ordaining female was allowed by the Buddha. As such, it is lawful and doable.
      Better register female monks as monks legally. And grant tax break as well. Thai government should do this quickly.
      I don't think the monk in this video is objecting ordination of bhikkhuni. He was simply stating that he cannot ordain them himself due to technicality. If you listen carefully, he acknowledged the bhikkhuni order by stating those female monks are neither rebels nor reformers (i.e. they are female monk ordained according to vinaya).
      Thai government can easily do pro-bhikkuni propaganda easily. The books back the event, anyway.
