I live in Suriname but I am not of Javanese origin. While watching your video I realize that I would feel very much at home in Jakarta. The city as well as the culture, feels so familiar. Thank you Sabbatical, for taking us on this journey.
I love how you went to Jakarta without too much researching beforehand, or else you wouldn’t have ordered beer on a roadside warung because some “world travelers” would’ve told you that it’s impossible to do so in the capital of the world’s largest Muslim-majority country; or you wouldn’t have gone out to experience the nightlife after some know-it-all told you that the city goes to a total standstill throughout the month of Ramadan 😁 I find it really cool that you didn’t recognize Bintang, something that all the “certified Southeast Asian backpackers” seem to take pride in knowing. Look, I love the internet as much as the other guy, but there’s such thing as over-researching and sometimes we forget that it’s good to let a destination surprise you once in a while. Cheers from southern Borneo!
Was in Jakarta last Nov, and I concur, the people were very friendly and love taking pics with people from USA. Street food near kebonsirih was tasty, nesi goreng another favorite.
Your "excited face" for your first meal in Indonesia reminded me of Mark Weins. Try to get to Bandung, it's in a high mountain valley, the temperature will be much cooler than Jakarta. Bintang beer comes from the old Heineken Factory in Jakarta. If you look at the star and design of Bintang it is exactly the same as Heineken. When the Dutch were forced to leave, the Indonesian people took over the factory and changed the name and logo to Bintang. As you might have tasted, Bintang is very similar to Heineken @Sabbatical

It's interesting that the firm was winning awards in the 19th century and nothing afterwords. The Czech have excellent beer that unfortunately does not travel the world. Shame.

I have been to Jakarta back in the 80s on my way to East Kalimantan. The one thing that I did notice is that everyone always had a smile on their face. Some guy was always asking me if I wanted to sell my boots or belt, and just about every day I had to say no. I did learn a couple of words. Orange was called "sunkist" and syrup was called "log cabin".

Btw just a tip - try not to use your left hand when giving/taking things and don't use aku/kamu when speaking to a person you just met/anyone older. You can say "bapak/ibu" or "mas/mbak" instead (Like "Bapak suka yang mana?") or "anda" if you want to be really formal. Nice Vlog you made about my city, my country
I'm amazed how far you've come it's refreshing watching a man that truly seems to enjoy the company of other but I have to say it's kinda like being on a city bus in America on a grander scale 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂kidding
Awesome bro, so genuine and organic the way you creating the vlog … meeting you up at sabang with satay ayam, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻cheers
you should show the rich shoe and boot making culture that the dutch left in indonesia. indonesia has been low key one of the best shoe and boot makers in the world. they do everything by hand and bespoke too. one of the best value shoes and boots that offer unparalleled quality.
The shoe then are reselled to Indonesia with a brand marking to make it A little bit more expensizve, and then the cycle repeats

I'm so impressed your Bahasa Indonesian is so good for a newbie!
I wish I could live life like you do. I barely ever leave my fatherland.
I visited Jakarta around 8 years ago and people rowed up to take a picture with with in the center of the city. After 2 hours my smile started to cramp and I was tagged on 50 pictures of random Indonesians.
You should have called the vid "NO WAY!!! Eating COW BRAINS in the craziest city in the known universe" That would been both more 'vloggy' and an anti-climax at the same time. I'm glad that's not your style, Tommy. Enjoy the delights of Jakarta. Your observations about the vibe being a mixture of different things is spot on.
I would not eat any brain. I'm simply not a big fan of introducing neurological diseases to my system. But hey, we're all different with we want for travel experiences!
@@beorlingo I always eat cow brain at Padang restaurant it taste really good mixed with the spicy sambal definitely worth to try
@@brokeboy8869 how it tastes is not what matters

@@brokeboy8869 I have this sense my message fails to reach all the way. Could it possibly the eating of brain? Either which, in your case just keep digging in! It won't make much of a difference.
Loved it brother. Thank you.
Tommy, buy camera microphone cover, it's cheap and the sound quality will definitely be better. I know the wind is strong on the islands, but it can be prevented. Have a nice trip, Indonesia is a very interesting country.
Maybe you could try to visit Surabaya, the city of heroes also the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia. It's a historical city with great food adventure.
What I like about this guy's he keeps pushing his boundaries.
It's amazing how you drop into a country and almost immediately fit in!
From there you should go to Kupang and cross the boarder into East-Timor.
after months ago seeing your journey to Suriname
finally you arrived
and shocked me you able to speak indonesian
Indonesia seems to take a national pride in cleaniness of their surroundings.Other countries can learn from them.
My wife is Indonesian I’ve been there more times than I can count. It’s a great place but clean it is not.
Tommy, you keep blowing my ming with your language talents, it's amazing! Take good care, bro!
How do you keep all these languages in your brain? I forget stuff within like 20 minutes of learning it.
New sub and thank you for the lovely video's. I was born in Jakarta but hopefully visit it again soon.
Big SO from Suriname 🇸🇷
I forgot how cool your videos are. Sorry for that Tommy. I'm back checking your whereabouts out!
You should go to Cambodia, to visit one of the 7 Wonders in Ankorwat, I am interested if you can learn Khmer language and how long?
Great video! Thanks so much. I enjoyed it very much. 👍🙂
You are a nice and gentleman guy sir. 😊
I will definitely going to Jakarta. I can blend in, not sure if that is an advantage or disadvantage. Just will enjoy the moment.
Jakarta, paradise for shopping and gastronomy lovers. Local, Indian, Mexican, Morocco, Asia, Europe, Africa and many more. Just say and explore. All restaurants are available, street food with thousand menu's, from the exotic to the weird. Jakarta has over 200 malls. Jakarta as the city's beauty and the beast. The Jakarta vibe from bad smell to good smell, from cheap to very expensive. From the worst to the luxurious. Jakarta is like a merry go round. Always very attractive and never sleep city. You will be missing Jakarta after leaving the city.
But still slums area😅
@@viosvios725 Even Paris, New York, Philadephia, New Delhi, Bangkok have slums area.
