Before yesterday, the QuickTake 100 was the last time Apple built the hardware and complete, full-fledged software for an image capture device. Even though the iPhone has been equipped with a camera from the beginning, Apple has relied on third-party developers to make its camera hardware actually useable for anything other than quick snaps. The company dabbled in camera development but shied away from jumping all the way into the pool.
But with Final Cut Camera, Apple signaled very loudly that it is shifting its perspective: it's now making the software required to take full advantage of its capture hardware. There really is no other definition of a camera company than that.

I think the guy asking about an OM-1 for taking pictures of his kids doing sports should keep in mind that MFT is way more than sufficient. Most people in the world can’t tell the difference between 20 and 50mp once photos have been printed or especially shared online as compressed jpgs. And it’s not like he’s a professional anyway. And professionals use MFT and get no complaints from their clients too. So I find this kind of thing such a nerdy conversation that in real life people wouldn’t think about for a second. If he’s using pretty long focal lengths for the sports, and especially if he wants to do wildlife, then the benefits of smaller lenses will I think quickly outweigh any loss of image quality for him.

I use both M43 and FF. Yes, you can produce photos where there is no perceivable difference. But it’s trivial to spot the difference when browsing through 200 photos. M43 is great for many things but claiming that a 4x smaller sensor does not come with trade offs is silly.

    • @jeremyg9305

      @@janwedek a 4x smaller sensor?? So a - 3x sensor?

      @christill Месяц назад +1

@@janwedekWho said there weren’t trade-offs? It’s just that MFT is completely worth those trade-offs to me.
And for people like this guy, I can guarantee he’s not going to care about the image quality difference once he uses an OM-1. And there are probably a lot of people like that. Being put off of a better, more suitable, cheaper setup for them because of the spec-sheet wars.

Yet another fantastic podcast, many thanks to you three! I specially appreciated your input and thoughts on journalistic integrity. This is one of the many reasons that I enjoy your gear reviews. I feel confident that your analysis is objective and gives a good idea of the performance and capacities of the products. Please keep these independent reviews coming.
I also enjoyed the response to the printer question at the end. I thought multiple times in the past of printing my own photos. Your thoughts on the matter made me feel quite confident in my decision not to buy a large, expensive, maintenance ridden printer that wouldn't get used enough. Find a local printer and let them deal with these issues!
Look forward to your next podcast, cheers!

And let me point out that the only videos of Chris fishing seems to be jn Jordans videos of camera reviews. If you search RUclips for Chris and fishing you will find an almost endless list of videos of him tying different flies, reviewing reels etc. Very few of actual fishing

They're also saying something about burn-in being less of an issue and more energy efficiency since you don't have to drive the panel as hard.

Chris needs this side HUSTLE getting going while 2024 is still here: Chris Niccolls branded WRIST STRAPS. Obviously I got the idea from this episode's joke about a branded shutter release cable (probably less feasible). I remember some old episode with Chris promoting using a wrist strap instead of a shoulder strap. I totally agree and would totally buy a C.N. strap. Especially if it's not just his name on it or something (that would be silly, like merch, that's not what I'm talking about). This needs to be a clever quality product, designed properly and ofc you can charge a lot more for this. Like 50-70?? USD. They would be easy to ship worldwide (small, can hardly break). What are you waiting for, billionaire to be? I would do it myself, but happen to be non-famous, with a non-fan base. You're welcome!

Hey - love the podcast. I do have to say for one of the few times since I've been listening, I disagree with a tech support answer. Regarding focus stacking on macro focus rails: either way produces completely acceptable results. While Jordan is correct that there is a slight perspective change from moving the camera, at macro distances in a controlled rig (like a macro focus rail), the change is no greater than the changes made by refocusing a macro lens, and any competent stacking software will have no issues with those movements. I have done lots of high quantity focus stacks for macro shooting, and have gotten fantastic results with both in-camera focus stepping using the focus motor, as well as focusing using a macro rail that moves the camera.
Additionally, for ultra-high magnification macro photography up to 5x, a focus rail is really one of the only viable solutions. Ultra- high magnification lenses are all manual focus to begin with, and don't even really 'focus' in the traditional sense. Shooting at 4-5x magnification requires incredibly precise focus steps that can't be performed by turning the ring (and the resulting handling of the lens would disrupt the camera position too much as well at these magnifications).
For instance, this image, which I took using the Laowa 25mm f/2.5-5x macro lens on my Nikon Z8 - this shot is at 4.7x magnification (width of image is around 7.5mm), and is a portion of a SuperSPARC CPU die. The camera/lens was set up on my motorized WeMacro focus rail, with focus increments of around 20 microns (that's the width of the thinnest human hairs), since depth of field is only about 50 microns deep. This is a 279 image focus stack, done in Helicon Focus, and is without a single stitching error. www.jordansteele.com/2024/supersparc_detail.jpg

I think you’re pretty much right about Canon; those are certainly logical inferences to draw looking back over the period since some kind of ‘not the R3 flagship’ was mooted. But the R1 (question mark) is probably going to keep the rumour mills grinding away until either Canon says ‘It’s out tomorrow’ or ‘Sorry, folks, there isn’t going to be one.’ Or until the Day of Judgment, whichever is the sooner. I doubt if Canon’s happy about all that at all: at some point (maybe it’s already arrived) expectations might become so unrealistic they’re unattainable. And you may be right that Sony’s A1, Nikon’s Z9 and now the A9iii came as a shock, especially as Canon were until relatively very recently, compared to both, putting their faith in DSLR sales.

1:20:10 Leica made a fully ruggedized, underwater camera awhile back called the Leica X-U. It was basically an underwater version of the X Typ 113 which had a 16 megapixel APS-C sensor and 23mm f1.7 lens. I'm not a big underwater or whatever photographer, but it has always been a bit of a grail for me as long as I've known about it (but it wasn't made in large quantities obviously and it's a Leica)...if only Leica made a modern version I would be over the moon. Imagine the Q3 with the X-U's style of housing/features, that would be incredible and all you would really sacrifice is the articulating screen and maybe the EVF from the normal Q series.

Apple's always been a camera maker imho, they seem to always have tried to find a right balance between leading with their own software (when third-party software developers don't go in the direction of their hardware development strategy) and retracting to let the lead to others when they feel it's back on track (think of Aperture...). Being myself a photo software developer and having been invited to their dev reunions in the past, they really try to navigate that fine line (think about the so many lacking features in Apple software concerning "basic" photography).

Smasung’sQdot OLED’s are designed for Tv. Because of that, making them in a much smaller screen would result in a very low resolution. So using that would be impossible. Apparently, Samsung didn’t want to make these displays for Apple because it was so difficult to make. LG said that they had the technology for it and apparently they did. I’m not that familiar with LG’s other OLED tech that they say here that Apple could have used. And Apple apparently, according to the graphics they used for this display, this isn’t a white OLED display it’s a RGB display. White displays lose color and saturation as the image gets brighter, so they are a poor compromise.
I also believe that you will now be able to edit directly off an external drive.
As far as the R1 goes, I remember about two years ago, I believe, when the head of Canon’s photo division was interviewed on DPReview, he was asked about a possible R1. He responded that they were working on it. But, and this was the reason he gave then, they were waiting until they could have an electronic viewfinder that would be good enough to use with a flagship camera and that there wasn’t anything at the time, or close in time, that would do.

    "Tandem OLED:
    Car entertainment first
What is new territory for Apple devices has already been tested in another entertainment segment for several years. Since 2019, LG Display has been driving forward the development of particularly robust, durable and efficient OLED displays. A new OLED structure was created under the name P-OLED, in which not one OLED layer, but two self-illuminating OLED layers are used in combination - hence the official name Tandem OLED (also dual-stack or two-stack). OLED).
The advantages of the new tandem OLED structure are enormous, at least in theory: compared to a typical single-layer OLED display, energy consumption can be reduced by up to 40 percent and the service life should ideally be extended by a factor of six . These two factors have been driving a regular tandem OLED display boom in the modern automotive sector over the past 12 months, and manufacturers like LG Display have struggled to meet production orders."

I had been hoping that Apple would make the iPad pro more useful for years and have basically given up until they put a proper file system in it. It would also really need to have more ports so that you can attach media, power, microphones, cameras etc. I still hope it will happen someday but I won't be buying another ipad until I'm sure it does, the one I have basically became a book reader and video device for in bed.

In regards to the Canon discussion, remember when Sony took 5 years to release the A7s III? If you look at the specs, nothing revolutionary happened. It got an upgrade for sure. However, I think that that gap was not enough for what came with it. Therefore I think everybody's expectations are a bit over the top. By no means I'm a Canon fan by the way. The mark IV should be releasing this year. This time around, it seems more promising than last time if you ask me. But that's still a 4 year gap, which is a lot.

People will complain about the R1 and say they aren't buying for this or that but the real real reason is they can't afford it. I'm interested in what it will be but I'm not sure I will replace my R3 or R5 because they do everything I need now. I don't care about video or megapixels so I'm not sure what a R1 could bring that could help improve my wildlife photography.

As someone who has worked as a photojournalist for network TV the FCC has an entire manual you can not violate when it comes to sponsors or ads or commercials or bribes. If you see your local TV people at events with great seats all the time, they are probably breaking the law. Taking bribes or "Things" as payment for anything that shows on Antenna TV is a felony. I believe the law is different slightly and a little lighter on the punishment for online or cable content.

You guys fill your mouth with journalism, and could not wait a few hours for the briefings to make the questions regarding the iPad display. Maybe you are right and it was just to avoid Samsung, or maybe is similar to what Eizo did when they stacked LCDs to get a specific result, in the case of the dual OLED could be related to burn-in (the controller could have the ability to refresh between the panels in areas that will never need the brightness but always display almost the same like the bar in MacBook). We don't know but we can ask. Finally, many people edit videos and draw on tablets. Clearly if one is trying to use the Adobe software which was designed in the 80s for PCs the interface is terrible, but if you can learn you are going to use Pixelmator, ProCreate, Photomator, and LumaFusion. The experience is beautiful, but one has to *learn* . Should Apple improve the Multitasking characteristics of the iPAD yes, but it's not a PC.

Whatever Canon does people are going to love it. The internet trolls are going to talk but most people will love it. Also, they are going to fly the RUclipsrs and get either good reviews or merciful ones. Canon will not be in Nikon position when both Canon, Sony, and the tubers were ut to get them. On the other hand, the economy could ruin people's perception of the camera. If it's pretty expensive and the economy is bad, tubers could be mad at Canon.

Please sony, our apple of the 1980's join up with apple. I don't need merge or even make your internal software better but talk to apple and allow somehow to join sony cameras to join their camera 'network' either by a app over usb-c/light connector or even better (we can always hope) using wifi and supporting their camera-network so we can directly connect sony cameras to the new finalcut2 (and hope more) apps inside iOS/ipadOS and lets assume later macOS.

I find it a little odd that you say Canon can’t process a lot of data in their cameras. Do the math. The R5 shoots 8K 30fps as is but, if you add an external power source, it can do 8K 60fps. We’re talking video but, still, that’s a lot of data flowing through a 4 year old camera… 🤦🏻‍♂️

45:54 AND consider that the Apple Camera (iPhone/iPad) will likely take BILLIONS of more Images and Movies than would ever be shot by the cameras made by Sony, Canon, Etc.
The iPad is just not that fabulous for all its compute potential, the host mentions the “Interface” and I have to agree it is the fundamental communication with the device and it just can’t do many things which MacOS does simply. Nice point to mention the INTERFACE specifically.

The current ipad’s can do HDR, just not as bright and not using OLED. I have the m2 iPad Pro 12.9”, and I am thinking of getting the new one as well. Why? Well, what is an iPad, it’s a giant screen, so having the best screen is a great feature for something that is nothing more than a giant handheld screen.
I know some pro colorists who literally send iPads to their clients to review work, because they want them to see it on an accurate, good screen. So, it’s not that expensive, depending on how you look at it. Base price is the same as an older MacBook Air? I would rather have the iPad, and use a bigger, more powerful MacBook Pro. Let the iPad fill that gap for portable travel stuff.
