Springboks Icon Naas Botha Takes Aim at All Blacks’ Decision Makers After Loss to South Africa

- Former South African rugby player Naas Botha - regarded as one of the country's finest ever first-five's - joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport to recap the first test between the Springboks and All Blacks in Johannesburg, as well as looking ahead to the second clash in Cape Town. New Zealand's 31-27 defeat over the weekend was their third successive against the Boks. This weekend however, playing on the south coast will likely be an easier task for the Kiwis after competing on the Highveld in the first test.
Botha talks to Devlin about the first match and what stood out to him, particularly about the All Blacks. He believes the Kiwis lack the needed expertise in key playmaking positions to break the Springboks down.

Naas’s analysis is on a different level. Probably one of the best analyses of the game I heard.
He was an incredible no 10 who was very wiley in his day.
Wise words from a legend of the game - cannot agree more Naas!
👍🏴☠☘
I remember watching Naas Botha when the 81 Springboks toured. Like all great players he seemed to have a lot of time with the ball in hand. Led the Boks backline magnificently.
I remember that 81 tour as well - he was superb
@@DhirajSingh-tk1pl He was the best flyhalf on the planet.
Correct.
On da udder hand, its so nice to hear Naas again!
What a pleasure Naas Botha. A legend.
In ping pong kicking scenarios Naas would always read the second last kick perfectly positioned under the ball out of his normal position and then put it away with distance.
Read the game like a book....
Cannot help but focus when he speaks.
As a South African we must stop telling the AB's how to beat us. Let them sort out their own problems.

Wise words from the legend Naas Botha:
1. It's the players, not the coach
2. Super Rugby is not preparing the All Blacks for test rugby.
3. a 25-year-old has 20 years of experience playing rugby, no excuse to drop balls
4. Test rugby is all about pressure.
5. The AB's are not pressuring the Boks with tactical kicking.
Love it when the great Naas Botha talks Rrrrrrrrugby.
Great interview with a great man, the Boks backline in 81 was one of their best with Naas and Danie Gerber 2 of the very best, and he was right on the button these current ABs need to take more responsibility for their peeformances on the field...

@@CocoLico-fh5pyWhat are you laughing at?
Believe me, as a WP (Stormers) supporter, it was no joke watching him win games with drop goals against us - getting the ball in his 22, kicking it out in ours and soon after "bam" - the Bulls up another 3 points.
He could keep it up all day, while looking as if he's got all the time in the world with ball in hand.

Oh by the way, after a request by Planet Rugby, World Rugby match officials confirmed that the Mbonambi try was the correct decision. Barrett knocked the ball on, it went backwards for Mbonambi and then he scored the try, just before the line, but then his momentum moved the ball over the line. So, contrary to the Cody Taylor try, Mbonambi's try was legit.
Of course world rugby did lol seriously you can’t be taken serious

I thought, based on that, that it was a try. I may be wrong. Would like your take on it.
Bongi's try is a try because the ref officiated it so.
Taylor's try is a try because the ref officiated it so.
Fassi deserved his red card because the ref officiated it so.
Sam Cane did not get a yellow card because the ref officiated it so.

@@randomlyfactual1943 then how come YOU decided to escalate Fassi's yellow to a red?
I think NZ and Australia are ruing the fact that they pushed SA out of Super Rugby. Our rugby is going from strength to strength and theirs appear to be in limbo.
Could not have happened to two better teams :)
No one pushed them out. They wanted out. Money doesn’t talk it screams. Saffas twist everything have you noticed, Bongi non try case in point. They also can not understand that the last two games played against the ABs, including the WC have been won by them due to TMO cock ups.

Naas is the man. Love to hear his opinion on the game best opinion so far this week on rugby media. Thank you for bringing this quality!

Correct. You keep ball in hand, protect it and attack not boot it to Springbok backs and give them the initiative. Naas was no tackler, but he was a great attack general and kicker.
I don't understand why Naas never went into coaching after his playing career. He could of coached on the highest level. He has a brilliant rugby brain.
he does in fact coach ... recently India national team and around Pretoria he coached a Division 2 school 1st XV... was it Oos Moot? or Zwartkop?
True, but i mean if started long ago he could of been a South African, England, New Zealand ext coach. I meant top off the best. You are 100% right on what you said. God bless @krlauf5307
A brilliant interview Martin . Hopefully you have Naas on again
Baas Naas is a legendary rugby genius. Simply naturally understanding rugby. ❤
Super 12 / 14 was what put southern hemisphere ahead.
We are going to regret it. NZ more so than SA because of northern involvement.
Super 14 was the most balanced of all the Super Rugby iterations.
Then the organizers got too greedy. Support for the comp was waning but ultimately Oz and NZ kicking SA out was like killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Growing up as a kid my dad ranked Naas as one of the best in the world at controlling the game and #1 kicker
100%
I watched him destroy my local team, suddenly decided drop kicks was the way forward and totally changed the game. I hated him but he is still the best kicker I have ever seen.
The best ever it could be argued.
Naas didn’t understand kicking the ball away in the final minutes…. LOL neither did I FFS
Neither did the rest of New Zealand!
I think having to face the SA teams in super rugby definitely benefited the NZ teams. Sure the NZ teams won more often than not, but they got exposure to different challenges… also got used to the travelling …
AT THE END OF THE DAY, I PUT IT TO YOU 😂😂
who got sacked over the super rugby decision ?????? no one and it was the biggest mistake in nz rugby history
Naas is spot on in his assessment of NZ's play in Test 1. The kicking game MUST be purposeful. Uncontested kicks to the center of the field caused NZ considerable strife. ABs need to kick in front of the fastest chasers. Damian McKenzie may be a top flight 10 in Super Rugby but in TEST rugby - Not so much. Thank you Naas for your insights!
Best flyhalf ever. Greatest drop kicker.
Naas Botha 🏉 is the definition of 'skop, skiet en donner.' 😂 You know the All Blacks are missing Carter when Naas has to school you in his second language.

Great interview they can learn from it for the future nice to hear your voice nice was one of my heroes in the past because i'm a big Bull supporter also but at this moment it's the Springboks that matter ❤❤❤
Agreed the standard of ref/TMO was not good. But the bad ref decisions for each team cancel out. NZ pundits constantly cherry pick the decisions they dont like and never look at the "bad" decisions that worked in their favour. For example the the ABs mauled try should have been disallowed for double banking, Sam Cane should have been red carded (again) and Mc Kenzie's conversion kick timed out but was allowed, whereas Sacha's was ruled out. Sport is a game not an exact science, there will be ALWAYS be mistakes.
I wonder whether the people who think they know more than a referee who has officiated at two world cups, at a couple of dozen matches in the Six Nations and Rugby Championship and about a hundred club matches in Europe ever get embarrassed when they make statements like these.
Do you think you know better than your doctor, too? How about your mechanic? Your accountant, maybe?
@@randomlyfactual1943 If Brace has such wonderful credentials as a ref (btw never heard of him prior to this & I've been following rugby union for decades), why does he not understand the basic laws of rugby? Although I didn't make the original comment, I don't see why anyone other than Ref Brace should be embarrassed... in fact, mortified. He's been called out by some of the top former international rugby players & pundits in the world. He had an absolute shocker! Tell me Cane shouldn't have been cited (and red-carded for breaking Kolisi's nose and part of his cheekbone... all because Cane has never learnt to tackle correctly & is a repeat offender)? Do you understand the relatively new law of double banking? If so, you'd understand why NZ's first try should not have stood. Are you unable to see the shot clock issues? Pretty obvious if you were watching. If Sacha F-M's kick was timed out, then DMac's should also have been timed out as the clock had reached zero quite a bit before he even started taking his run-up to kick. Bongi Mbonambi's try was legit - explained in detail (see link) plus take a look at Rugby Law 11.5b. The original comment was far more gracious than I am... it said that there will always be mistakes by refs. Probably so, but at least be consistent with both the wrong & right decisions. And if you don't keep up with current rugby laws, don't criticize those who know better than you. And yes, academics research medical matters and don't blindly follow what their doctors tell them (doctors are not Gods & neither are rugby refs). www.planetrugby.com/news/law-discussion-springboks-controversial-bongi-mbonambi-try-was-the-correct-decision-heres-why
@@vivb5180 See here's the problem. Folks who never A) played, B) coached or C) reffed a single competitive game of rugby goes and learns a what amounts to a buzzword like "double banking" or "Law 11.5" and suddenly know more than the ref.
Just like actual laws, the laws of rugby allow for interpretation. There isn't a single one that is definitively correct. One referee can look at Bongi's try and feel that there was not enough control when dotting down and would not award the try. Another referee might feel that as long as there had been downward pressure and he was technically the ball carrier, then that satisfies them with regards to awarding the try. Neither referee is wrong, neither one is right. If they base their decision on anyone of the hundreds of laws, then their decision is valid.
@@randomlyfactual1943 Wow, you know me so well... I've never played, coached or reffed a rugby match... really? Your crystal ball needs some buffing. Double banking is quicker than explaining exactly what this entails, but happy to explain in detail if you aren't familiar with this 'buzzword'. Whichever way you put it, it's illegal and and should be penalised If former international ref, Nigel Owens, can interpret rugby laws correctly, it should be possible for officiating 'teams' to get it right, too. But it wasn't just Brace who was a disgrace, because when he asked for the TMO to review the high hit on Kolisi by repeat offender Cane, the reply was that there was no need to review the incident (meanwhile, the injured player is bleeding profusely & it turns out that his nose is broken & part of his cheekbone is fractured)... yet this does not warrant a second look and review?? Sorry, simply not good enough. There are refs out there who would make better, more consistent, and more accurate calls and 'interpretations'.
In my humble South African opinion...I would start Beauden Barrett at 10...maybe McKenzie at 15. But Beauden has been a thorn in our Springbok side. He gets the backline going...But will also need a 9 to compliment him and I don't think they have one at the moment.. The 9/10 axis seems the problem to me. That and some depth.
Spot on Naas. The players at that level should not fumble balls, choose poor options and kick aimlessly. They should be fully in the moment. It seems to me there are a lot of players suffering from ADHD lately..

Naas says something.
Also Naas, “and I absolutely agree!”
"If they want to put the Boks under pressure..." I watched a game where the All Blacks put the Boks under immense pressure right until the end.
Just a nice way of saying you don’t have enough World Class players and that’s ultimately the difference
Well, thats exactly what the Boks did last time they played ABs at Ellis Park....stupidly kicked ball away in the last minutes leading to AB win.
Oh Naas... Old school, straight-forward talking. Most of these players are good athletes but lack the smarts for to be great players
The apparent aimless kicking is a direct result of the backs getting slower ball from TJ and consequently being under extreme pressure from the rush defense. Ever wonder why the AB’s are kicking and struggling in attack since Smith left?
Not correct sorry with Smith the allblacks had serious issues with rush defence starting with the Lions tour . TJ is just awfully slow and past it …

What he is saying without saying it is that the ABs are not very intelligent. I agree.

I agree. Where the ABs of the past were a very street smart side. It all starts at the rather inept competition that super rugby has now become. You only have to see the Wallabies and Allblacks decline over the years and more so the Wallabies
GOOD points
correct choices under test level pressure
Put B BARRET AT FIRST FIVE
DEVELOP BENCH AND PLAYERS BETTER SIMPLY THAT AS WAS STATED IN INTERVIEW
Agreed . Hope ABs don't listen to this tip as this is a great part of solving their puzzle
From Bok supporter ..much respect to the ABs
Naas.....still the tactician. He knew how to play the percentages.
Well said Nas, Kick down the middle to back there defense - don't agree but thats the objective. Put em under pressure put it in the corners! Come on AB's do it for 80! Agree on terrible super competition but thats a whole different issue.
It used to be the other way round a few years ago.
Why is Naas so pissed that the All Blacks lost😂😂😂
beauden barretts kicking man...
Question: Would you guys say All Black rugby has deteriorated a bit since the Springboks left Super Rugby?
It has hence why they struggle against teams like Ireland, France over the years and the Boks play in there competitions which has benefited them where super rugby it's all tye same style which isn't great preparation for test rugby
I think the ref for this match qualified at the Bryce Lawrence school of refereeing !
Nah, he was consistently weird to both teams while Bryce was one-eyed.
Ahh man Naas ,,,, Y did u coach them ?
I fully agree with Naas. Barretts kicking was hopeless. Reiko needs to be dropped as well and replaced with some who knows how to distribute the ball.
Rieko is a crap centre
He had a very high percentage of sliding off tackles. It's one thing to miss tackles, but it's another to lay hands on the opposing player only to be easily shrugged off.

Pressure creates mistakes!! The ABs under pressure they can't handle.....therefore mistakes
We won't get near a RWC if we don't adapt our foreign policy, because everyone knows SRP is not strong enough to prep the ABs but somehow we still expect these guys to not only compete but beat the springboks, Ireland etc. HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE.
Dont blame the ref ball in hand is game on
After 80 mins of rugby no 10 fly half's white shorts were always clean like he never played guess who was that in the , seventies from SA 😅😅😅😅
South, South, South Africa for all you confused people , Do you refer to NZ as Oceania????
My question is if we struggle against South Africa these days because our super rugby players aren’t exposed to the way South Africa plays then surly that goes for them too it not facing our way of playing?? I think it’s more than that. Go back 15 years and look at the space backs had to work with. With rush defences, slow play. And rule changes our style of play isn’t as effective anymore. I mean we can’t just run teams around and tire them out. They just bring another team on at half time and keep slowing play down. Look how skilful our abs under 20s are and they are getting absolutely smash by say a French team who just monster them up front and defend you into making a mistake. The games changed but Nz keeps trying to throw the pill around skilfully and it’s not working like it used to. It’s a shame because our style to me is far more entertaining and skilful but that’s not what wins internationals where space is closed down super quick
It's like West Indies cricket in 70's fast bowlers ruled batsmen adjusted then came spin & great fielding batsmen adjusted again
Teams adjusted to NZ's quick play by better conditioning defence set piece turnover and counter attacks
So AB's want to actually keep the fast paced play into space but develop defence tactical kicks set piece ... they have to adjust
I do believe the super rugby benefitted NZ more than SA purely coz SA did not adapt to running style during that period (and they should have) but yet they provided NZ with good defence to run against.
So NZ stopped getting to play against teams high in defence skill I guess?
Saturday will be a humdinger again.
Respect to NZ AB's. 🇿🇦
Yea good points. So I guess it’s the case if they just keep getting better at smash and bash and we just have to find a way through them. They are on a journey of pressure though defence and we are on a mission of pressure through attack. I’m happy with that challenge and I just hope razor and the abs are too ;)

I didn’t see anything wrong with NZ kicking strategy- it’s just that the Boks responded with better quality with Fassi and Sacha
But the ABs had to kick because they were not getting much gain line success.
The only critique and improvement they could make is kicking the ball into touch and test the Boks’ line out cos it was not functioning properly

And yet he had the most tries scored by his back line as a Bok flyhalf (per match) than later fly halves (Stransky, Honiball) …
Danie Gerber, Carel du Plessis to name just two back line “greats” who played in the back line Naas marshaled. And they were not team mates of his at a provincial (state) level.
He was peerless as a general - great vision/field management and if nothing else was “on” - could drop from almost anywhere on the field.
The truth is all the teams that played against him - knew - he was the GOAT and they would almost (like Bradman) be playing against 16 instead of 15 because of his ability to score points.
And no - I am not a BlueBull supporter (I am a Lions supporter) - but I can recognize that he was strategically and tactically brilliant.
As a youngster he was fearless - but his Coach at the Bulls taught him to stay back out of the fray, to deliberately take the ball and manage field possession. Brains over brawn. That kind of nous a person like Dan Carter and Grant Fox appreciated.
