Excellent! I've been shooting more and more weddings and have struggled with white balance adjustments out of the camera. I also have a full-time job and I have two daughters (5 and 2), so time is - as you can imagine - a huge commodity. So, not having to mess with white balance/color in post-production is one area where I can realize a huge amount of time savings. I am MORE than excited to use the tips learned in this video. My daughters, wife and I can't thank you enough!
As an amateur photographer having a D90, I am still experimenting the different features and settings; this particular tutorial really help boost my learning curve in taking efficient photos according to the different lighting situations...Thanks for the guidance!!
Awesome tutorial. I knew my D90 was capable of doing custom white balance, but I was frustrated that I didn't, until I watched this video. Thanks a lot. You saved me so much time of reading through awfully boring manuals.
I do not get the critics Jon, this is very helpful if you are new to shooting with PRE. I used it for the first time with strobes and this helped me do it. Not sure what the problem is with the trash-talkers that have nothing to add to life other than putting others down. Boo000 indeed.
Glad you liked the video, thanks. I think they are as good as the other with one exception. If you are at the job and you take a test shot, you can compare it on the Lcd monitor to the actual scene to see how accurately the white balance is doing. When you go back in Photoshop, you won't have the original scene to compare it to. This may not be a big deal to some depending on the use and style of the photographer, but might frustrate others trying to get the colors accurate etc.
Sure Mike, I guess everyone is not going to like our style. I have been doing training videos like this since 1991 for a living and I figure I will let our samples speak for themselves. We have almost 2 million views, so I'm pretty happy with that. And we are still getting sales of our DVDs, so no complaints- I have my health back, (or close to it) I have a great wife and two wonderful boys 7 and 10 That is my success.
If you really want the 1/8000th of a second shutter speed, you can always buy the Satechi grip off of Amazon, which adds that plus timelapse, extended multiple exposure, and quite a bit more (in addition to the normal extra battery and vertical shutter button/wheels).
Gald you liked it. If you go to elitevideo com you can find out more on our 2 dvd set that covers this and a lot more. Glad you avoided the manuals. Please subscribe.
It is a bit of both, we are trying to lead people to our website to get our D90 Made Easy two DVD set or just watch some of the free video sections here.
Yes I remember, Are you using auto whitle balance now? That may be your problem. If so you need to set a balance setting that doesn't change. Try the different options in white balance depending the lights in your office. Let me know if this helps.
Yes, I know about Lima, but have not heard of its overcast qualities. To compensate I would try longer shutter speeds with tripod, 2. look into h d r software , also look into increasing the saturating of your colors in post production. I would also have some fake flowers, colored shirts and hats etc, in your bag of tricks to add boost to your pics when needed.
Thanks. I think its a tough economy and a tough and confusing world these days. If feel if it gives people a boost to critique, in whatever way, then, I support them, even though I may disagree. There is a lot of pain people have directed in the wrong places. They just may not realize that being negative too much gives a very short lived boost. Thanks for your support.
Jon, thanks for this great video. I assume I could do a WB adjustment of snow rather than a white page on a bright or cloudy day and get a proper adjustment for the current conditions?
Thanks. A very useful tutorial. If I leave the D90 in Auto rather than a semi or full manual, I must use the auto balance and cannot adjust the white balance or set the white balance from a card?
Great tutorial, thank you. I take it the rest of the preset 1-4 are for images? and D-0 is for setting the white balance with a piece of paper? I've noticed other tutorial using a grey board rather than a white piece of paper. Why grey?
I would suggest going into the manual white balance temp mode and start taking pictures at increments of 200k or more until you come to the color that looks best for that situation. This way you are not too blue or yellow.
You are right, We will try to slow it down on some of our new videos. People have such a short attention span in American, it was our way of trying to keep people from jumping to some other video. Non the less, we were too fast. Thanks- John
I would have to agree with you. In this case I would recommend you get Magic Lantern disks. They do a really good job explaining what you need to know. They are a good company and get the information across in an easy to follow manner. We are pretty homemade and downhome, I agree. I would even agree with the boos because we mess up every now and then.
There is a lot more fun to make with white balance settings by selecting an other setting then the light is. So you can make your picture summer warm or radio active green. Play with it under the same conditions to see the result from every possible preset.
Really good video, thanks! Thinking about ordering the videos. I was wondering, does it matter if you use a white or a grey paper? Should it be a 50% grey or something? Is one better than the other? Can the camera see the difference automatically? /Sebastian
Great Short Vid!! Thanks a bunch. I'm super new to Cameras and Photography... and having a blast with it. BUT, I'm taking pictures of a fish tank. Or more a Reef tank/aquarium with lots of deep colors (not deep water). The lighting is LED, and above the 10,000 Kelvin range. More so in the 15,000 - 20,000 if you will. My photos are as close as I can get, when setting the WB to 10K. Anything I can do, to better the photo and capture the color at it's most "BEST" setting?? lower contrast helps 2
Have you used the four way controler to try to get that combination? What happen if you did? Also if this is your first slr, I would suggest getting the Nikon d90 made easy (where this video was taken from.) Its 2 dvds 90 minutes each and you can learn all that you need to learn about the camera in an easy to follow way.
It is most likely in low light and need more light or there is too much light in which case increase your shutter speed or reduce your iso then it should work.
Glad you were helped. You can go to our site elitevideo com, and check out the d90 made easy dvds if you are interested in learning more in a way that is not like the manual - Keep in touch - John
Sorry- Didn't mean to make you feel bad. I am interested though, Did you view both sets of disks before you made that comment.? If not I'd like to send your our disks no charge to view. I'd like your opinion after seeing both 90 minute disks. We are always striving to learn and that also means taking suggestions, even from our hardest critics. Sometimes you can judge the disks better from watching them instead of just a clip. Keep in touch -John
@jonvideo in this case, taking purple and brown items.... actually, it would be great if you could tell me what colour bias is good for those colours.... thanks in advance....
So if I'm understanding this, you set the WB custom setting using the PRE setting at the location of the shoot -- so I would take white paper with me... ? Thanks - your video is MOST helpful!
You shouldnt have in full manual mode. Is the lights your are white balancing under that lights that you are also shooting under? Sometimes if you only have the white paper as about 50% of your image when balancing, you may get a better color temp. Let me know if you try that.
Would I be able to use the gray card if I have a filter already on my lens, for instance, a circular polarizer? Would it affect the white balance at all?
How are wildlife photographers setting the custom WB where they are taking a long shot and not close to the subject? What is the difference between using an 18% gray card and using any white object as a reference? Is there a difference in video or photo quality? If using a flash should you also include the light from the flash going off when setting the custom WB knowing that as you walk back to where you will take the shot the flash fill will be dropping off? The Meltdownman
Thank you for the helpful video- I've been trying to shoot in manual and realized recently that the colors in all my photos have been skewing way too yellow/orange. Going to try this! -m
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have been having a hard time getting my WB correct when shooting inside (it is too blue, then too yellow). I tried doing the preset, but still having those issues. Any suggestions? Thank you!
I cannot understand what the point is in saving a custom white balance. If I save it in say D1 can I go back and use it some days later? Will the light not have changed? Paul
hello there, am a new photographer who just got his first digital camera. do you guys know what setting for the custom white balace should be used for the colours purple and brown
.. really informative, thanks. ignore the "boring", the other guy is just operating at a different level - somethings are complicated and take a bit more explaining.
One question ! Can i just take any good images on the net, format in the same size and put it back into the card. So i can set that pic in my white balance d1 2 3. I tried but it wont let me read the images. Any trick to do that. I just want to put any images into the camera and make it readable for the camera.
Are these images that were taken by the camera to begin with , or were they ones you got from the internet? I don't think you can do that if they werent from the camera to begin with.
Excellent! I've been shooting more and more weddings and have struggled with white balance adjustments out of the camera. Thanks a lot. You saved me so much time of reading through awfully boring manuals.
Good job, easy to follow. I had been struggling with the custom WB procedure after upgrading from a D40 and this video was helpful. Thank you.
I tried this at a gym the other day - it worked! Thanks so much!! What a difference!!
I do not get the critics Jon, this is very helpful if you are new to shooting with PRE. I used it for the first time with strobes and this helped me do it. Not sure what the problem is with the trash-talkers that have nothing to add to life other than putting others down. Boo000 indeed.

Yes, The MTV entertaining version is the dvds we offer at the elitevideo site. If you want the free info, we run it through a boring filter first.
Thanks @bloresat from Bangalore, Glad you liked it. The D90 is a great camera. Keep in touch - John

You have to have it on while white balancing with white paper, because that is the light you will be using on your pictures.

Great Video. Cleared all my doubts regarding WB. Thank s ton for this video.
Cheers from Bangalore
This is great. And I love your voice! Easy to follow and listen to!
Thank you jonvideo , this has really helped me understand the white balance in my D90
Jon, thanks for this great video. I assume I could do a WB adjustment of snow rather than a white page on a bright or cloudy day and get a proper adjustment for the current conditions?
Yes, the D300 does have a programmed auto mode, though I rarely use it.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks. A very useful tutorial. If I leave the D90 in Auto rather than a semi or full manual, I must use the auto balance and cannot adjust the white balance or set the white balance from a card?

The current setting may just be that your top dial is set to a mode that wont allow you to change the white balance, What is your top dial set at?

This is from the 2 DVD set - Nikon D90 Made Easy
This helps so much! My tutors were telling me the opposite way round which really confused the situation. Thanks : )
I know I am pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
What do A-B-G-M in white balance stand for, I think B= Blue, G=Green and M=Magenta but what does A stand for.
This was so helpful, sir, thank you!
Either will work, Grey may be less reflective and thus have less glare.

Incredibly useful and clear. Respect!
Glad you were helped. You can go to our site elitevideo com, and check out the d90 made easy dvds if you are interested in learning more in a way that is not like the manual - Keep in touch - John
I have not tried the IR much, What happens when you try to set the white balance? are you getting the wrong colors.
Mohon info.kalau waktu pre, hasil tidak mau good, apa yg harus disetel.? Tks
Is it that you want purple and brown cast or you are taking purple and brown items in the picture.?
Yes, You don't have to fill the screen with the paper, so a small piece will do. Good luck, Glad you like the video.

You are most likely in auto mode, Go to P or A or S mode on the top dial and try again. Check out the dvds for this camera at our website elitevideo
@jonvideo thanks a lot! for explaining things very simple, for answering
questions!!
So if I'm understanding this, you set the WB custom setting using the PRE setting at the location of the shoot -- so I would take white paper with me... ? Thanks - your video is MOST helpful!
Glad I could help, Hope you picture taking and classes go well this semester.
You shouldnt have in full manual mode. Is the lights your are white balancing under that lights that you are also shooting under? Sometimes if you only have the white paper as about 50% of your image when balancing, you may get a better color temp. Let me know if you try that.

....Which is why I shoot Auto WB and RAW+JPEG and if I need to change anything I do it in post on the RAW.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have been having a hard time getting my WB correct when shooting inside (it is too blue, then too yellow). I tried doing the preset, but still having those issues. Any suggestions? Thank you!

the shutter speed in other cameras is twice as fast.. should I worry about this?
Thanks for the nice complement
@PhotographersOnUTube Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me why its possible to save 4 white balance presets? When can these presets be used ?
What is the tip if using flash too? Should it be the same procedure but just with the flash?
I love the music.
YES!!! wonderful video!!!!
.. really informative, thanks. ignore the "boring", the other guy is just operating at a different level - somethings are complicated and take a bit more explaining.
great vid o.o i plan on getting either a d3100 or a d90 soon ^^

One question ! Can i just take any good images on the net, format in the same size and put it back into the card. So i can set that pic in my white balance d1 2 3. I tried but it wont let me read the images. Any trick to do that. I just want to put any images into the camera and make it readable for the camera.
