Absolutely agree, in fact Madame Towarnicka's voice is the ONLY soprano (or mezzo for that matter) I've ever heard whose voice I not only like, but which, moreover, knocks me all of a heap.
@Hotshaddix it'a about a man who cry his dead friend. the sad man is the compositor Zbigniew Preisner and the friend is Krzysztof Kieślowski, a film director. Lacrimosa is a part of requiems, the part to cry ;-)
Heart-felt, astounding, and sublimely glorious. This performance possesses a profoundly overwhelming grasp of what can only be described as both beauty and the art of human suffering. Brilliant!
I just found Lacrimosa a few days ago...I´d seen Tree of Life but had completely forgotten that it featured the composition, In a word, Wow. Thanks for posting!
@Hotshaddix Wrong, it's not about a dead friend. It may be dedicated to his dead friend, but it's actually text from the "Dies Irae" sequence from the Requiem mass which yes, is for the dead. The lacrimosa is the day of sadness when the God judges the guilty and they ask for his merciful to grant them rest.
@quickwear Thanks for the info. Kieslowski is one of my all-tiime favorite directors, and I knew he tragically died in a car crash, but I didn't know this piece for him. How sad. Preisner's scores for Kieslowski's films are absolutely incredible.
All requiems have basically the same lyrics, from latin scripture. They are pieces of music based on death or funeral rites, usually intended for a Requiem Mass. There are usually 12 parts, one of which is "Dies Irae" (Day of Wrath), of which "Lacrimosa" (weeping) is a part in turn.
Well, it's a Requiem after all... it's meant to be sad, whether people feel such sadness upon listening to it or not. Albinoni's Adagio is probably the most melancholic piece ever. YouTubing for Goreski's pieces right now! D.R.
@quickwear How couldn't this song be sad ? The very essence of the word Lacrimosa is surrounded in sadness and tears. Beautiful and sad are mixed perfectly here. In fact, its kind of naive to believe that something beautiful can't be sad, it is the exact opposite. The most deeply beautiful things here on earth could make you weep.
@Hotshaddix It is a part of the Dies Irae sequence which was sung during requiem masses before 1970. Many composers wrote music for it. If you want to know the words: Tearful that day, on which will rise from ashes guilty man for judgment. So have mercy, O Lord, on this man. Compassionate Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen. (translated by William Josiah Irons 1849)
I vastly prefer the original Latin. A beautiful, dignified language. For that matter, it is a thousand pities that the Church abolished Latin Masses in favour of the vernacular. If all Masses all over the world were still celebrated in Latin, you could attend Mass in any country in the world and you would be able to join in completely with the responses, instead of having to make educated guesses most of the time.
A practical show of how much the soundtrack of a movie is paramount to its completeness. Also the first time I complained to management that the sound in the theater clamped much too early and basically became a garbled mess when trying to play the higher pitch...
Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus : Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Ah! that day of tears and mourning! From the dust of earth returning, Man for judgement must prepare him: Spare, O God, in mercy spare him! Lord, all pitying, Jesu blest, Grant them Thine eternal rest. its about the sorrow man will feel when he meets God and realizes how he's failed

This is the incredible music that Terence Malick used in The Tree of Life. It plays under the creation sequence and works perfectly with the visuals of the formation of the universe. See the movie!
The lyrics are part of the Latin mass Requiem, specifically the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) hymn. They're about Jesus returning to earth to judge mankind. "Tearful will be that day, on which from the ashes arises the guilty man who is to be judged. Spare him therefore, God. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen."
@quickwear @vijaymohanrao I suppose it's a matter of perspectives... I find this song and the others mentioned above quite sad and lonely, and a bit dark too... Which by no means supposes they can't be beautiful also. In fact, I find that honest sadness and longing are extremely beautiful, exalted and sublime feelings. D.R.
@Hotshaddix here is the Latin and an English translation: Lacrymosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla, iudicantus homo reus., Huic ergo parce, Deus:, Pie Iesu Domine,, dona eis requiem. Amen. That day will be one of weeping, on which shall rise again from the embers, the guilty man, to be judged. Therefore spare him, O God. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Amen
Isn't this beautiful. Very nice writing; the violin accompaniment is well placed stuff. Lots of headroom in this piece. Very nice melody writing.. great use of tension and anticipation. Very slow deliberate transitions under the voice.. This must be for a movie, no counterpoint in the chorus.. To bad.. to simple for me... Cinema music is not classical music... It is a beautiful piece..
Il s'agit du Dies Irae partie Lacrimosa. Je crois que le deuil que l'on sent c'est le sien, du compositeur, on partage les sentiments qu'ol veut exprimer. Alors c'est réussi.
When I hear something this beautiful I feel completely humble and in awe. I wish we had more art like this and its was all around us.

what a beautiful homage to Kieslowski!
We're lucky there's such a genius composer of our time. I hope Preisner will be remembered and loved in the future just as Mozart and Bach is today.

@quickwear well actually its the end of a hymn about the Judgement Day
It's not a hymn, it's part of a requiem mass which always used to be sung in Latin according to the same sequence. But for the rest you are correct.
@Hotshaddix here is the Latin and an English translation:
