- The ancient capital city of Polonnaruwa is a must see while in Sri Lanka. A lot of people compare it against Anuradhapura and having been to both, I can assure you that for most tourists, you'll enjoy Polonnaruwa much more. Take a bicycle there like we did, go on a weekday when it's not crowded, and enjoy the authenticity of the old ruins and ancient city!

What are your thoughts on Polonnaruwa compared to Anuradhapura or other ancient cities around the world that you've been to?
The architecture is very similar to Tamil Nadu (in the following structure that I am talking about in the links provided and other buildings found there. I am not referring to the Buddhist structures he is showing in the vlog - edited note). It's very influenced by Hindu religion. In Tamil Nadu (India) , there's this beautiful piece of work called Thanjavur temple (I have personally been there) and it is said that the same king or his son made a replica of that structure in Pollonaruwa. I am glad that you are visiting these places. Please do visit Anuradhapura as well. You could observe a clear difference in "moon stone" in Anuradhapura and Pollonaruwa (This is an example for the influence of Hinduism that I am stating - edited note) Anuradhapura was the first kingdom and then with the south indian chola invasion , the kingdom got shifted to Pollonaruwa. (Moon stone is the semi circular stone with lots of carvings you find before a staircase/entrance to a palace or a temple).
P.S : Do a Google search on Pollonaruwa Shiva temple and Thanjavur Brihadishwara temple. During the Chola time , the this particular structure was constructed as a replica of the Thanjavur temple by the same king / same dynasty.

Few kilometres away from Anuradhapura town , there's Awkana statue and Kala Wewa (huge tank). Now this particular tank has a beautiful history. And Awkana statue is so famous for its marvelous piece of work. When it rains , a drop of water which falls on the forehead of the Buddha actually hits the floor in between the feet. The mathematics are that perfect !!
I did mention you that visit to Ruvanweliseya during the dusk time is a must last week itself. But now that you are already in Pollonaruwa let me give you more information. Some of these Buddhist places require the visitors to come in WHITE and COVERED. You could just cover yourself with a white cloth. Most of the temple securities keep white cloths to handover to foreigners.
And don't forget to visit Isurumuniya , Samadhi statue. Samadhi statue is marvel by itself. It depicts the compassion of Lord Buddha. It's said that once Mahatma Gandhi of India saw this statue and in no time tears were drooping down from his eyes. Isurumuniya has some wonderful stone carvings - a couple (king and his gf lol) and more.
Minhintale - go by tuk tuk, a local bus. We first received Buddhism from that place. It's a hill with lots of mango trees and temple flower trees. Very Instagram worthy place too.
You might have to buy tickets - you could buy a single ticket which covers all the places. Trust me it's worth it.
As I told you last week too , you could actually take bath in Basawakkulama tank (near Ruwanveliseya) or Tisa wewa. It's fun !! Have a wonderful time in my precious place Anuradhapura ! If I were in the country, I would have personally being you guys' guide 💕🌻✨

Make sure you visit Ritigala if you are planning to visit Habarana/ Sigiriya after this.
Almost all of those Buddhist temples and palaces were made by Sinhalese buddhist architectures and builders who born in this land. They got that technology from ancestors since 5000-10000years back. At the end of the Anuradhapura era South Indians were attacked the kingdom. After that only few changes happened in the buildings under Hindu influences. This kind of ruins you can find in every where in the country. Still most of them are under the earth or covered by jungle. Most of us believe our magical island may be a part of legendary Atlantis civilisation. God bless both of you!

Johnny, srilankan ancestors tried to hide and give meaning and hide the main thoughts of the buddhism inside the ruins. Each sri lankan having a responsibility to learn them. that's why may be the tickets are surprisingly free for them.

And remember guys ,now you are witnessing the historical basement of Srilanka . The statue was the king parakramabhahu the great himself. Srilanka kingdoms started from The ancient city called Anuradhapura ,perhaps your next destination I guess. And polonnaruwa was the second in the series . Good luck friends .
I do believe The statue was the Sage Pulasthiya Munivar . The place called Pulasthiya village . During the pandya king Rajasimha Pandyan [ Son in law to Mahinda 1v ] Crown related war was lasted between Chola's and Sinhala nearly 100 years .Result during the Chola Emperor Rajarja chola's time the city of Anuradhapura destroyed . Emperor Rajaraja's son and the viceroy of chola territories in Lanka The Crown Prince Rajendera Chola moved his seat of power from Anuradhapura to Pulasthiya nagr and rebuilt and renamed the city " Jananatha mangalam " approx in the year 990 - 1005 AD . But in the year approx 1070 AD King Vijayabhahu recaptured the Rajarasderam OR Rajarada from Chola Emperor Kulothunga Chola and renamed the city Polannruva and was made it as his new capital city . The statue firmly believed Sage Pulasthiya Muni . Great king Parakramabhahu's Father was king Manaparana and his Mother was Cera Princess . King manaparana father was Pandaya Prince and the mother was Sinhala Princess . In fact Cera , Pandya and Sinhala Kingdoms ruled by a unique Royal families . King Parakramabhahu was not only the heir to the thrown of Sinhala Lanka but also for Madurai Pandyan Kingdom . He was appointed his cousin Veerapandaya as his representative of Madurai Thrown and ruled both kingdoms from Polannaruva until the Cholas captured Pandaya kingdom again . It is an interesting history .Those time Chola and Pallava Kingdoms called Northern Kingdoms . Cera , Pandya and Sinhala Kingdoms called Southern Kingdoms

Ohh... Johnny, few months back I wrote here about Gal Viharaya (Rock Temple) if you could remember. Am so glad you went there. All the Buddha statutes were carved on that solid piece of granite rock using “hammer and sickle”..!!! When you see how finely the statues have been carved out using hammer/sickle it’s truly amazing and unbelievable. Even using modern day wax craftmanship you cannot create a statue more fine or smooth in texture/features than these statues carved out of a solid granite rock 2500 years back. This piece of granite rock craftsmanship is comparable to any of the seven wonder’s of the world in my opinion when considering the “smoothness” and the “finely carved features” the craftsman of that era managed to achieve..!! At times I wonder if they have used some other unknown technology to achieve this level of “finesse” in all of these statues considering it is a pure granite rock..!! Every time I go there it amazes me and feel this Gal Vihara (Rock Temple) was never given it’s due recognition when it comes to ancient craftsmanship... Am so very glad you went to see this monumental piece of history...
@ There was no much significant archeological sites during the Tamil invasion in Polonnaruwa, only sites are available as shiva devala temples but recently identified by archeologists, it was made top of the ancient Buddhist temple.

You asked for a comparison of some famous sites. Here it goes:
Anuradhapura - Bigger, older, and more spread out. Tons of smaller individual sites. Most of the sites are places of active worship. Huge pagodas/stupas which were the tallest man-made structures in the ancient world at one time after the great pyramids.
Polonnaruwa - Compact and more museum like. Better preserved than Anuradhapura due to being younger in age. A good comparison would be somewhere like Chichen Itza in Mexico or a smaller scale angkor.
Sigiriya - Probably the most iconic site in Sri Lanka with ruins perched on top of a huge rock and gardens at the bottom. Plus you get great views.
Ritigala (Between Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa) - A small quiet place with ruins set in the thick forest. There's a very different atmosphere because of the forested nature.
Mihintale - A complex of ruins on and around a hill. Good views from the top.
Dambulla - A single temple complex in a cave. Very well preserved. Quite unique.
Kandy: Newer, and therefore very well preserved and maintained. Can be a bit crowded. However, there's more to the complex than the main temple.
There are many other smaller places such as Medirigiriya, Yapahuwa, Haththikuchchi, Tantirimale, etc.

Both of the above (including some of what you've mentioned) outside the cultural triangle that is Anuradhapura (pronounced Ah-noo-Raa-duh-poo-ruh), Polonnaruwa (pronounced Poe-low-nnaa-roo-wuh) & Sigiriya (pronounced See-gi-ri-yuh)/Dambulla (pronounced Dahm-bull-er).
Yes, Angkor Wat is VAST in comparison (Sri Lanka being a small country 😊) but Sri Lanka's ruins are just as impressive. When you learn the history of these ruins & the use for different buildings & developments, it is fascinating.
Additionally, the preservation of these structures reminds me a lot of the Acropolis & it's surrounding in Athens & the preservation of structures in Thessaloniki in Greece. The biggest difference is that much of the ruins in Sri Lanka are away from the city which is densely populated. Given time, care & concerted efforts by the Archeologists, I feel Sri Lanka's history will survive a while for its future generations. I don't know if I can confidently say the same about the Acropolis & Thessaloniki ruins. The city has come up around these parts of history & they degrade the ruins with time, faster than it would occur if they were more out-of-the-way of civilisation. I truly hope that continuous efforts take place to keep these bits of history alive.

Hi Johnny, You have to our Forest Rock Garden resort in Anuradhapura which is a replica of an old palace with tree top cabana style accomodation. Amazing.... be warned only down side is they only serve vegetarian food. Check it out.

About the entrance charges - Yes they are high. Let us say that locals should not be paying too much because that's their heritage and prices for tourists are actually the correct price. But what we really need to understand is that - Sri Lanka needs tourism. It supports the economy. And by 2020 , Sri Lankan tourism is not doing well. In 2019 , due to Easter Sunday Bombings (as the name is popular that way) - a concern about the safety suddenly popped up. And in 2020 , due to corona virus pandemic - of course you know the story.
I saw that some people have commented that in other developed countries too the ticket prices are high. Now do those countries essentially depend on tourism as one of their major income compared to Sri Lanka. Now if you are preparing to say that tourism is not one of our major incomes - well it could be. And we badly need that.
And why people are blaming this guy Johnny for complaing ?! He is not the only foreigner who felt it was too much. I have seen other vlogs where tourists complain and some of them even give up visiting those sites.
This is not about Johnny - but majority of the tourists who choose Sri Lanka as a holiday destination do that not only because it is a beautiful island but also because of their assumption that it could fit into their budget.
And at least this guy is one of the few who are making vlogs about it and making them public. One can make vedios and keep them to themselves as well. One might go ahead to comment that RUclips is an income - but isn't it genuinely favouring our country ?! His vlogs have this "child like innocence". Why I used that phrase was - he shows everything in the vlog. Even the conversations he has with local families. Those kind of stuff are special. That leaves a good imprint in the memory of people who watch these vedios from other countries.
So instead of trying to defend your point (by thinking that he could pay for it) - let us just take some time to appreciate his effort.
Acknowledge the fact that entrance charges for tourists could be a little less. I am not saying that they should pay equal to a local. But a little less as many find this very costly.
At least this guy left the beaches and roaming around these cities and uploading the vedios on RUclips.

I disagree with the comment that charges are too high. In any kind of travel a person makes, they need to have a budget & think of places to visit in terms of affordability. That's not special for a person who visits Sri Lanka. It's common for people who travel ANYWHERE...even those who travel within Sri Lanka. It's good practice to research & set aside the budget required to visit key places you've set your heart on. $25, in the grand scheme, is actually not a lot of money. Tourists would happily spend that on visiting Stonehenge, the Minnack Theatre, the Eden Project in the UK or Versailles in France, but they have trouble spending that in Sri Lanka at a site that's more vast & full of history? That sounds utterly ridiculous. & smacks of privilege.
Also, we should be happy that tourists want to showcase their visits to Sri Lanka & encourage their friends to visit the country. We should be happy.
But we don't need to be grateful for it! We don't owe them for showcasing their trip.
They made a conscious choice to do that. It was their CHOICE to showcase Sri Lanka. & this choice doesn't mean we turn a blind eye when they're culturally insensitive or acting like privileged toddlers.
This tourist is 39 years old. He's a grown man! & some of his generalisations & commentary highlights his privilege & disconnect with the plight of Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka. Calling it out isn't a condemnation of him as a person. Saying he's doing that & asking him to be aware & be better doesn't mean he's disliked.
Who knows. Maybe he might be more sensitive & actually be better.
@@KushnSads Apparently Tourism Board of Sri Lanka is sponsoring for his travels now. I don't know if they are actually paying him but you can see in his other vedios how it's them who are taking the vlogger around and even explain the importance of difference places while he is taking a vedio. They have recognised him as a "potential influencer".
I am sure by now the vlogger must have put forward his opinion (and many for that matter) regarding the entrance charges to the officials of Tourism Board. So if the authorities feel the same / a necessity to go for a promotional discount - that would happen in the near future. And vice versa. So the issue gets sorted that way.
Again the issue is not about the places are not worry of the price. It's about how Sri Lanka could utilise all these spots collectively in its promotional package to attract more tourists. I hope you understand the simple fact I am trying to convey here. Take this example : A tourist visits a place , let's say Sigiriya. High chances he would have his lunch around Sigiriya , might stay in a home stay , engage a local tuk tuk. Now how many people (Sri Lankan infrastructure providers) would get benefited ?! This all adds to the economy. That's how you do business !
There are people who are genuinely interested in knowing the history /ancient sciences and it's their passion to learn about these. They don't care about the price tag. Of course they would continue visiting. But that category is narrow. And they are not enough really !! That's the whole point.

Love you guys. One thing I just noticed. Why do you guys always compare the prices between local and foreigners(48:27). I admit that, there is a discrimination over local and foreigners in terms of pricing. But if you compare developed country's entry charges with SL. I don't see any problem there. As an example, UK Stonehenge, Amesbury adult entrance fee is same as here as well. Please look into this matter in this perspective as well. Have a wonderful journey ahead guys. Thank you.
Not to offend those adventure enthusiasts..! But I've seen some foreigners who loves to do adventure stuffs & travel to those surfing, hiking spots, but not interested that much on enjoying ancient places, ruins & temples..!

@Johnny FD : The No Photographs sign has a deep rooted reason bro. Do you know sri lanka probably has the longest unbroken line of kings anywhere in the world until the last king was exiled by the Brits. Most of these kings, specially from antiquity were great warriors...(holding all alone against the might of Indian emperors and being sovereign for more than 2000 years. Makes the old kings great of course) however out of all those kings. Only King Parakrama Bahu(Shoulders of victory) was the only king to be called Great(Maha). So taking a photograph next to his statue(Claimed to be his/ Some historians also believe it to be of a great ancient Saige/Wiseman named Pulasthi) anyway...pointing the ones ass end towards the statue while being next to the statue of this Great King... is considered an act of disrespect in old customs(This is a common practice in any royal court btw...in some movies that's why they show. Subjects walking backwards before leaving the presence of the King. )

Btw, ticket prices for foreigners are little high. But Sri Lankan's are paying their taxes for life time. I think that's the reason for the big price difference.

No taxes? Look around man. For example, Vehicles are in Sri lanka very expensive compared to the other countries. Same thing applies for literally everything. Public schools and universities are not a big deal. Lots of countries have public education system for free.

When those people said "family", they meant "extended family" with aunts, uncles, grand parents, cousins, second cousins, and all their in-laws. Usually nowadays, there are only about 1 or 2 kids per family, maybe 3 at the most. Anything more than that is very rare.

I think ticket prices completely fair compare with other countries. If you go to new zealand , australia they charge for everything. First they charge entereance fee then rest you have to pay inside. I had pay even for some photograph

It is sad to hear that foreigners Skip going to the ancient ruins because of the amount they charge a foreigner and then saying there is not much to see in Sri Lanka , When Sri Lanka has such deep history what is definitely more than one hundred twenty thousand years of human history..

Another great video Johnny. But I wonder why tourists complain about the ticket prices. Even in US, entrance ticket to any tourist attraction cost around 20 bucks isn't it?
Yes it's true, but since everyone else is also paying $10-$20 it feels more fair. We actually have free days at Museums as well, usually every 1st Wednesday of the month. For those who can't afford the ticket price, they go on those days. That system makes it less crowded on other days for people who are willing to pay for it, that way they get a better experience.

Your videos give a lot of information of what a beautiful country Sri Lanka is. But dude, seriously, less with the assumptions maybe?!
You're NOT likely to lose your bikes in more rural areas compared to the city. Sri Lanka has that in common with most other countries. For example, if you're in a Cumbrian village in the UK, you're less likely to have your bike stolen even if you've left it unlatched while you're getting lashed in a pub. In London, less so...theives will steal your bike & have sold it for parts before you can say "My bike's been stolen". Doesn't make me love Colombo or London any less.
Also, it seems to be AMERICANS who don't seem to visit or even know where Sri Lanka is & make inane statements like "there isn't much to do in Sri Lanka". This isn't a generalisation, it's genunine experience. I've experienced a few Americans express that London seems to be the extent of the UK, Berlin or the Black Forest the extent if Germany, Barcelona the extent of Spain & Mumbai the extent of India. That attitude is ignorant. & it isn't Sri Lanka's duty to dispel that ignorance. It's the seekers duty to find out more about the World. Like you've done.
I disagree that tourists don't WANT to come to Sri Lanka. People from Europe, Asia, Australasia & the Middle East do, AND they know more about Sri Lanka than the average American knows probably about their own state.
P.S. it's not the fault of Sri Lanka that a pandemic is raging right now & there haven't been tourists since around March. The country has closed its borders to all but repatriation (Sri Lankans who need to come back into the country from other's they're living in - domestic workers living in the Middle East, Doctors finished with foreign training etc) flights. This is one way of preventing the spread of the virus & Sri Lanka is using the method. It mightn't be ideal (I don't feel it is) but that isn't a reason tourists don't WANT to come to Sri Lanka.
Ticket prices are a travesty. I've lived in the US, they never made us pay anything other than what a regular American would pay. Hopefully these things change about pur country.

It's cringeworthy. Imagine if I had to pay 80 dollars for a quater pounder with cheese in America when an American pays just 4 bucks. It's just wrong. There's no two ways about it. When I was in Japan for holiday I bought a pretty expensive watch at EON mall, Narita. The shop then directed me to a tax rebate shop that reemburses the tax I paid for the for the watch. I was very pleasantly flabbergasted, when I asked them as to why they'd remburse the tax to me their response was, " why should you pay taxes to our government when you don't live here".
This is how the rest of the civilized world handles foreign tourists, we should takes notes. Not all tourists are rich. Some of then work entire summers just to save up to come here. I mean look at Johnny, he's not a super rich foreigner but he makes do and wants to have a good time, who are we to ruin his party.

Tourists price is the price for visit there but locals get a discount since its their own ansistors, thier own culture and their history these things defines from where are these people from. Now just imagine you going to visit your herritage your hostory and get over charged..!
And also these things need to be well maintained. But by charging just few cents by all the visitors cannot help it. If all were charged that amount of price for the ticket then government had to pump money on maintaining these historical things. As you know sri lanka is not a wealthy country like yours. So it is not possible. This is the reason why tourists are getting charged high. That is the actual ticket price and locals getting a discount since they're visiting their own culture their own herritage. They deserve it. Not because of skin colour.

Worth watching 50+ minutes please do not compare but convert maximum value for your spend ticket price everybody who watching you will value your unic movie work, gap of ticket price suggestion isfair enough but valuation of ticket is end result of tourist statistics and cultural value of the place, in some places you will given more informative stuff than locals like printed or digital dvds, if it is the season you would see more croud both locals + foreigners

For your question at 23.20, Visit Forest rock garden hotel in Anuradhapura city (about 105 km from Polonnaruwa), this resort has a pool which looks like a pool from king's era.
Come now Jonny, we pay much more to see places in America. Just to enter a psrk you have to pay more than 8 dollars. So compared to that, to see rhe entire ancient city you are practically paying nothing. Rs 50 for Sri Lankans is because these are ancient Buddhist places.and It is our history we are looking at.. People pray too at some sites.. Compared to a museum in California which we paid more than 15 dollars this is worth the money.
And not to forget the super cheap food, hotels and transportation in Sri Lanka. When you round up everything you getting a super cheap deal. Talking about California a crappy motel in a bad hood costs 100$ LMFAO!
Yes I agree with you both but at the same time people still come to LA no matter the cost. I actually live in California. I think what Johnny is saying is that Sri Lanka will attract more tourists if they make it more affordable. And let’s be honest, SL tourism industry definitely needs help!

We get enough tourists to these places during nomal days. The people who avoid them are the people who are not interested in history and culture. They only want sun and sand and do a quick visit to Kandy or Ella.. these two have been in SL for few months, so they have time to visit places. It is good that we dont get too many tourists to Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Tourists will spoil the area for Buddhis who visit these places as wandanawa.

Foreigners are used to getting everything super cheap in Lanka, so when they actually have to pay what people normally pay to visit a UNICEF site around the world, they suddenly get offended. Its also 25$ per head to see the whole city which is many sites. Can take up to a full day. It definitely should be free for Sri Lankans!!!! With a choice of a donation. BTW Sonali i ve lived in LA for the last 14 years.

There are over 20000 built and maintained by the Sri Lanka people for over 5000 years but Sri Lanka has not a single natural lake . The big one in pollannaruwa was built at the request of a king but other small ones were maintained like a tax where people had to spend a day in the month maintenance of "tanks" (= reservoir)

Reminds me a lot of the Angkor temples and palaces in Cambodia. There's lots of temples in Cambodia that are very inexpensive. Angkor Wat costs the most it was $20 for a day pass. Not sure if it's still $20.

Dear Jonny, I was watching your DVD about polonnaruwa.Tears came to me. I am a srilankan living in England Its shame I have visited only once.That trip is also rush visit.As you told its is correct. Our srilankans have never appricate our history. Very rarely few of them appreciate. Thay have no value. How we are lucky to have a beautiful history any such a amazing carved stone with a beautiful statues. we are owe for some thing for our great kings to save the history and some thing to look and enjoy in our life.
