  • Sigiriya is referred to by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World this ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is probably the most visited tourist destination of Sri Lanka, but at the same time, we personally know dozens of tourists who have chosen instead to visit the near by Pidurangala as it was both 10x less crowded and much less expensive for foreigners at just 500 lkr ($3) per person instead of 5,500 lkr ($30).
We decided to pay the $60 (11,000lkr) per couple to enter so we could show you if it's worth going to and what you'd be missing out on if you go the cheaper option. Let us know in the comments if you think it was worth paying 10x the price for to visit, rather than going for the Pidurangala Rock hike just opposite.

    Dear Johhny,
So the title says: "was it worth it paying 60$?" in your description you say that you pay 60$ to show if it's worth it going and what you'd be missing out if you go for the cheaper option. So the cheaper option your saying is Pidurangala. Pidurangala has now become a viewpoint to see the sunrise with Sigiriya rock beside it especially for instagrammers for the perfect picture opportunities. But Pidurangala really is an ancient monastery with a history. As per your description you're doing a comparison between Sigiriya and Pidurangala which is fine. However if you're doing a comparison I think you should at least get your facts right before you justify the prices and the value. Christina only explains a little part of the history of Sigiriya rock fortress. History is not only the main reason why sigiriya is a UNESCO world heritage site. Its the other factors that matter to make Sigiriya unique. So i think its only fair if you mention these as well, at least in the description.
Sigiriya is an unmatched combination of urban planning, water engineering, horticulture and art, built in the 5th century. Sigiriya is considerd to have the oldest complex irrigation system in the ancient world that still work today during huge rainfall. Considering these unique features UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. So my point is without mentioning any of these in your video or in the description you just compare two rocks with good viewpoints and the price you pay for entrance. As a local i feel very offensive for you to do so. We value and respect our history. We are not expecting visitors to do the same. However since in this video your doing a comparison and complaining about the prices at least you should have looked up for more information rather than comparing for what you can see. People may get a wrong idea of Sigiriya from what you're saying here. I think 30usd charge is more than reasonable if you consider all the factors mentioned above rather than the brief history you explained. Sigiriya rock fortress in unique in its own way and its one of a kind in the world.
Also after reading many comments I hope now you can understand the reasons behind the price difference for locals and non resident tourists.
Thank You, will be waiting for your next upload. Cheers!

The phase Piduran means the monks who achieved Rahath (closest to Enlightenment) and phase Gala means the rock. $30 per tourist to view such an amazing historical site is nothing, it is a shame you go on about having to pay more as a tourist in many of your videos. The Sri Lankan people earn so little and are currently suffering without having tourists coming into the country, it is unreasonable to compare the 5000LKR to 500LKR. It would be great to hear more about your gratitude for being able to spend so little to live in 5 star accommodation and experience such a beautiful country. I am sure giving a little extra is not such a tough ask for a tourist when comparing our affluent incomes to an average Sri Lankan's?

Hi Johnny, I really enjoy your videos and it is so relaxing to watch them. I do agree with your comment, that you may feel a little unfair and a discrimination regarding local and tourist ticket prices. But I should say that paying $30 is not really unfair if you compare it with ticket prices of world heritage places. Sigiriya was named as 8th wonder of the world a little while ago. I have paid something around $30 to visit statue of liberty and another $30 to visit empire state building in New York. Local ticket price is not actually the real value of this visit. I would say it is a discounted price given for locals. I know It is debatable. There are many Sri Lankans who earns less than $5 a day. So Sri Lankan government can not ask them to pay $30 to visit Sigiriya. This is just my opinion. Good luck to both of you! Enjoy Sri Lanka.

If anyone has seen Stonehenge close up but did so by doing the 2 mile walk versus taking the bus, you probably paid $29 (£19) doing so.
Entrance fees are justified. No one would stop visiting Sri Lanka because of an entrance fee. If anyone decides not to visit such a valuable historic monument because of a fee, that's more the visitor's loss. In any event, US$30 is a bit too hefty. $20-25 per person or $60 for a four person group is a bit more reasonable I think.

Johnny I didn't completely watch the vedio yet. So I haven't got to the part you state your final opinion. But let me tell you this. Sigiriya is worth it !! But there's a condition. You need to have read about it before or maybe take someone as a guide who could explain you everything. For example the water bodies which you see as you enter is no coincidence or surprise. It served a purpose in those days (probably in ensuring the security of the rock fortress). Few years back I took some of my friends to Sigiriya (and yes the ticket prices were a major complaint by them as well 😬). And I did explain something but you know I am not a professional guide. And months later , one of them happened to have found a book which glorifies Sigiriya and he just couldn't believe that he was there !! And you know later this friend actually thanked me for taking them there ☺️

    Dear Jonny,
I have watched almost every single video of yours. And I really appreciate the tourism boost that Sri Lanka gets out of your videos. I thank you for that.
But, your continuous complains about ancient site entry fees made me to write this. If you go to visit Egyptians Pyramids there are separate cost of just for entry 12.8 dollars plus cost of entry inside of the great pyramids 25 dollars, 6 dollars each to go inside of each other pyramids. And this is for one person. and you complain about spending 30 dollars to visit Sigiriya.
And you might say but Sigiriya is not the ancient great pyramids and the 'worth' of visiting those is much higher. But I would suggest you to STUDY about Sigiriya before you compare or complain. IT'S NOT JUST A VIEW AND A FORTREST BUILD BY A ''CRAZY'' GUY. If you did study the architectural science, the are of building it, paintings of the frescos, great myths of alien influence ect. is none lesser than any other world heritage sites in the world. Sigiriya is a UNESCO world heritage site for a reason. Plus it's still a mystery how water drainage system and how they look water to the top of the rock. And the 'pure granite' swimming pool built in ONE STONE on top of the rock is a mystery because you can't find granite from that area. Which means it has been shifted to the top of the rock. And you still complain?
So you complain with the comparison cost for tourists and locals. please keep that in your mind Sri Lanka is a developing country and most people's monthly wage is very low. Plus they citizens of this country. So please STOP complain. You are very safe in this country and you live because we watched your videos spending our money meaning spending our money on a tourists. So be grateful rather than going OVER BOARD.
Have a good and safe stay.
    Thank you.

I feel these two are not being properly guided about these sites. Otherwise they do research on their own and build their story on it. In their trip to Nagadeepa Christina inquired about why the Buddhist worship nagadeepa and then go to the Hindu kovil. She tried to imply the fact that Hindus were the original settlers in Ceylon. That is how I git the impression. But sadly there was no one there to explain it to her. This is the fact. These foreigners are mislead.

May be Americans have no idea about Sri Lankan that is normal anyway they don't know any geography at all. Most of the tourists who visit Sri Lanka are from Germany, Switzerland, UK! and France. They have visited Sri Lanka non stop since we got our independence. Just because Americans have no idea don't think others have no idea, what I like about other tourists they never complain about the prices. Only recently the Eastern Europeans started to come, of cause they don't want to spend as they are also from poor nations. That is why Christina is saying her friends didn't want to spend of cause they can not afford, We have to pay 27 Great Briten pounds to see Tower of London. What do you see there mostly blood bath history of their past. Nothing like this. You have to complain paying 60 dollars for both of you. Christina at least try to say the words properly, . Any nondescript boat ride on some unremarkable river or bay would cost more than this! If someone can't actually afford the entrance fee I would question as to why they would spend money on travel rather than save/invest it. I think you guys have just gotten used to the dirt cheap prices, so these entrance fees now come as a shock. Don't forget the per capita income in the US is 60k+ and something similar in Aus. SL? it's 4k+. So there is no question of charging residents similar fees. Just my opinion. Love the videos!

The "expensive" price put there also to reduce the crowd too (because of my point no. 01) and Because it's bad the lighting, electromagnetic emiting fro the paintings and for the mirror wall too.
    3. Government tourism is a full of crap and they don't care if you complaint. (Let's see if current president cares)
    4. Those prices are according to government acts and pretty much outdated. In late 90's a dollar equal to 50 something LKR. Our currency rates responsible as well for this situation.
    5. You can't keep locals from coming. Because this is a property of Democrotic socialist Republic of SL; republic means anything on it are belong to locals and gov can't charge high prices.
    6. Tourists complained about Sigiriya for a long time now. But not all. There is a portion of tourists that actually care and value about Sigiriya ( west europians specially) Most complaints gets from entry level digital nomads make travel videos because they want to film Sigiriya and get the video views but they don't want to pay that amount of money for business purposes ( it's not about you Johnny. There were digital nomads actually chose Pidurangala rock over Sigiriya and complained about the price without even climbing Sigiriya)

Best comment! Also may I add that a part of the price discrepancy is due to the Sri Lankan currency dropping in value against the dollar. The local price is always quoted in rupees while the foreigner price is always in dollars. Both the rupee rate for locals and the dollar rate for foreigners has been relatively constant for years/decades. Two decades ago, $1 = Rs 60, and now it's near 200 which makes the discrepancy 3x worse. As Johnny takes advantage of the rupee dropping in value when he finds cheap hotels/food/transport which are priced in rupees, he should also expect the discrepancy to rise when a price is quoted in dollars.

For those complaining about the lesser fee for the locals should remember that Sri Lanka is a developing nation, where there are many families whose total monthly household income would be less than USD 300 per month (the minimum wage is actually LKR 10,000 i.e. USD 54 per month). For a family of say, 5 people, a USD 30 ticket would mean that they have to give half their monthly income or more to show their children the monuments built by their own ancestors. Also, do keep in mind that while ticket price might be a little steep, but what you pay would go towards helping maintain and keeping safe Sigiriya and the many archeological sites surrounding it. In the end, whether the value of seeing a monument dubbed by some as the 8th wonder of the world and considered a global treasure (don’t take my word for it, it’s a UNICEF World Heritage site) is worth a cost of several Pumpkin Spice Lattes, is totally up to your own valuation.

I don’t think it’s fair for you to complain about the two tier price, because average income of a Sri Lankan is very low compared to the average income of a tourist .While you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel abroad, stay in luxury hotels, getting these numerous experiences, majority of Sri Lankans even cannot afford to go on a vacation within Sri Lanka, let alone eat in a fine dining restaurant in their entire lifetime. They may save up and go on a trip to Sigiriya may be only once in their entire life (I’m not exaggerating here) . And it’s their culture and history, so the citizens should have access for an affordable price.

Sigiriya was one of those forts from human antiquity that couldn't rally be captured by assault. It was so well made. In the ancient days the entre fort complex had several motes , One with poisonous plants(thrones) , One with mud/swamp, One with water + dangerous animals like Crocks and one with pitch to be set one fire if it come to that. Thousands upon thousands of warriors guarding it. Fertile lands surrounding the fort made food and water plenty. Talking about water Sigiriya has one of the ancient world's most advanced water supply systems, second to none. Used to even supply those ponds on top of the rock with pressurized water in ancient days. Even today on a rainy days you can see the ancient water fountains at the foot of the rock come to life (search Sigiriya water fountains on web) ...which is one heck of a sight (a feeling of you traveling back in time) , In ancient times the fountains would have sprayed jets of water many feet to the air. Unfortunately for King Kashyapa , When his brother Prince Mugalan arrived with a huge army from india to Avenge his father's death. Guilty bound Kasyapa forgot all his militarry training and wisdom , went out of the protection of the Fort and faced Prince mugalan in open combat like an idiot. Lost, and then committed suicide by cutting his throat with his own sword before facing the wrath of Mugalan. All those murals and splendor is said to have been constructed by Kashyapa so he could look at them and try to forget the fact that he killed his father (a beloved king) to gain the throne. I think the reason that no one really used Sigiriya after the death of Kasyapa is because that place was the home of a much hated "Father Killer" - seriously ..Sigiriya fort was captured without any direct assault and just abandoned forever soon after...

I need to check with my Mom, she also carried an old video recorder with her all times. One thing I remember is that I wanted to fly off the rock!
For those who agree/disagree about the fees; here in USA every national park, is mostly $10-20 per person or $25-30 per vehicle. We have an annual pass, "America the Beautiful" is $80 and one could visit as many parks, as many times one wants. So far we have had more than 20 "America the Beautiful" cards. Just before the pandemic we visited our 42nd National park, Petrified Forest National Park. In contrast California state park annual fee is $195. We just pay day use fees mostly, $10.
Then there are parks like Biscayne National Park
    Entrance fee: free
    Boat rental: about $500
Camping: $25 per person per night
So minimum one person will spend at least $525 Most parks in that area of Florida costs at least $300 a day. It is hard to judge the correct fee. Last time we were in New Zealand, we paid anywhere from $8-45 (US $ 5-30) so it is for an individual to decide. It is expensive, but I will pay. That said, about 5 months ago we ate Sri Lankan Biryani, Kottu roti and some other stuff from Ayubowan Food Truck here in the Bay area for about $50 :) . Man that was a long comment!

Having said that paying $30 is too high compared to what the locals pay, it should be a more reasonable price like $10 (like the temple of the tooth), then more tourists will visit the place. But there were no one to educate you on why it is so. Provided a full guidance was given , the money you paid would've been worth the value. You had an amazing time with locals in the villages at a reasonably low cost. On the contrary, tourists spending more money at a handful places like this cannot be justified by any means. If the price gets down by half at least and by making exposure to more and more places with equal opportunity to visit different places, Sri Lanka will be even more famous than ever, I guess . Actually $60 is not for the view its for the content and for the importance of this place, and that's why it was nominated as one of the ancient wonders of the world, along with the great Pyramids. But even being a local I climb this rock several time not knowing its value and one time I payed a guide around Rs.5000 (Its still too much, so most of them don't take this option) to explain the importance of this place. Its a shame that how less they have invested to market the importance of this place. At least have some boards for people to read out. Its truly an ancient engineering marvel. Symmetrical water gardens, Under ground water management system, pumping water from the ground to the top of the rock just by using natural wind and physics is just few of them. It's still a mystery how the ancient civilization pulled this off thousands of year back. And yes its a shame how they don't invest enough to educate tourist and locals about the importance of this place. Yes I agree, $60 is too much, $30-$40 would be reasonable.

I am a srilankan who live in Dubai. Sigriya is not build by king Karshapa who even can not imagine how it was build. he only used it to escape from his enemies. It was build by King Ravana more than 6000 years ago who build the 1st mercury flight in the world. also he is the person given his technology to build Piramids in Egypt. . You have been spent 11250 for viewing it it will worth more than that. Because even the present scientiest can not understand the technology how he has build it.

great epi again! Those topless women arts were said to be king's maids! Those are over 2500 years old. That's why they keep a strict no photo policy in their. And people still wonder how they brought water to upper deck pools & ponds in Sigiriya rock.

One food tip. Sri Lankan food tastes best when you mix the food with the curries. Use your fingers to mix the curries well with anything you eat (not just put the curries on top). For example - mix the dhal, potato and sambol with string hoppers well with you fingers. Trust me, the real flavours come out then. ❤️ Same with rice and curry too

Hi Johnny just ask from ticket counter any specialty for extra ticket price they will give more information documents remember my friend got its worth you need to get maximum out from your visit example: ancients have taken water to the top mountain pool, once you published like this whole world would watch it more than for value of the ticket definitely waiting for your next videos, stay safe, again lock down some areas in SL for safe

I pay local price nowadays because I've been a dual national for the past 10years. However I have visited Sigiriya several times before as a tourist with family when we paid a mix of local and tourist prices. I am happy to pay more than the locals. I do think the price for tourists is way too much in comparison to what locals pay but then again, how often do tourists typically visit unless you have family/your roots in Sri Lanka?

Johnny FD - I think you didn't see the most important three things in Sigiriya. One is Sigiri Apsara paintings which were old almost 1500 years . The second things are water fountains which were over 1500 years working without any power source. The third one is Katapath Pura which was mirror wall and it includes thousand years old poems and that poems patronizing about the beauty of Sigiri Apsara Girls painting.I think you two have another tour to Sigiriya another day and see those three important things.

Dear Son and daughter, yes, price is exorbitant, but don’t forget that the massive flux of tourists is ceased due to Corona! ( when this Pandemic is gone , I hope the price will go down) Anyway you didn’t show water fountains going back to 5th century! And Sigiri graffiti which are marvelous poems written by visitors like you from 6th century A.D. These graffiti were translated by our great archeologist Paranavithana( he is like Jean François Pollian to the French) and published by Oxford university under the title of “Sigiri Graffiti “. Sigiri frescoes! You didn’t see them! They are queens and maids.( just try to see in the google)
Your presentation is splendid! I congratulate both of you and you make me nostalgic ( I live in the West)

I think the entrance fee to Seegitiya 60 $ is not expensive. if you visit Burj Khalifa in Dubai you have to pay more than 60$. There is no any Historical value or it's not a UNISCO heritage too.
