oats was locked tf in, a 42 with a bunch of safety's + animals is sick
Right? That was beautiful. I usually want save the animals, but I wanted to see how close Oats could get to the record this time.
I think it would have been sweet to see Cutie pull out the W over Oats playing a strong safe game, but his Draygon was pretty rough. Spoiled by missing a short charge. Crazy example of how such a small mistake can lead to about a minute time loss.
@@Rob_Enhoud He also got caught by the baby. Oats after missing the booster ball after ridley was just kinda on point.

Can we appreciate the fact Oats did a 3 JUMP stashio baby skip like it was nothing? In a 4 way race during a marathon? Even though every other runner played it much safer yet struggled with it. And this is a hunch but I'd say Oats risked it because he knew that if he failed the trick the race would pick right back up as the other runners would surely get closer and it would make for a better show to the audience. In any case, truly he is the Goat.

Did Zeni honestly forget the animals or was the loop around the ship runback a troll for the audience? Because if it was a troll, it was a 10/10 troll; Oats being like "Yo what you doin Chief?" was great.

Easily the best speedrun I've seen at a GDQ in a while. Everybody played super well, awesome to watch, Congrats Oats!
Oatsngoats has always been my favorite Super Metroid player since watching his unfortunate defeat in SGDQ 2015 and I have been watching his progression and rooted for him every GDQ race he has always done. Watching this race made me so happy to witness his dedication for the game finally paying off. Congrats Oats!

Was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching this live!!! What an amazing run and an amazing performance by all 4 runners. I was sweating buckets for ARC during the Draygon and MB fight, holy crap what a clutch.
AMAZING job Oats!!! You were totally in the zone, so crazy to watch.
Knowing Oats got WR with 40:36, and still had time to do a little flex at the animals is insane lmao. The 4 of them crushed the run, but Oats had the lead for almost the entire run (there were some hiccups along the run, but HEY, backups were nicely executed). He's not practing the category so hard anymore, but daaamn, we can't deny/recognize that his muscle memory is still SHARP! Great run for all 4 of the runners, that even with bad RNG, still got a great finishing time!
Super Metroid is my favourite game of all times, and i love to see such well played run in a category i love!

Interesting that everyone finished the race relative to their positions on the Any% leaderboard. Just goes to show that there is a real, tangible difference in skill required to shave of that minute / minute and a half of time.
It's been YEARS since I've seen an SM Race on GDQ end on such a hype note, the last few minutes where the AUDIENCE was racing against Imyt to meet the SMM2 incentive was absolutely beautiful.
Also shoutouts to Zeni trolling us at the ship.

Finally got time to watch this. Incredible race by all the runners. Oats just executing non stop. Donation goals hit. 70,000$ raised by the kill/save animals battle. This GDQ segment was incredible to watch.

I recently started playing SM again on my switch after 25 years with my 4 year old son watching and asking non-stop questions. We watched this run together tonight and y'all blew his mind! Some highlight questions: "why don't they have to fight all the mini-bosses?" "Why can't you kill Kraid that fast?" "How come it takes you so long to get to Mother Brain?"
Great runs you guys! Love seeing these runs, you make it look easy, but I know there's literally thousands of hours of grinding that went into it.
What an awesome race! You did amazing Oats, and I loved the victory lap around the ship by Zeni for 2nd
The commentators didn't explain this, so if anyone hasn't seen this category before and was wondering why they bothered grabbing the Varia suit after the Kraid fight when they already had the Gravity suit: It's because it halves the damage you take. Without it, they would actually die to the motherbrain beam at the end of phase 2 unless they collected several more energy tanks, which would obviously be slower than grabbing the Varia suit.

@@vini.trindadgravity suit doesn’t reduce mother brain rainbow beam damage. Varia does. So you would need 6 E tanks to survive MB compared to 3.
it's so cool that you can actually get killed by the rainbow beam if Samus doesn't have the proper equipment...I don't know if it's an happy accident by the devs or did they actually thought about the possibility that some players would one day be able to finish the game without the Varia suit lol
@@lajeandom You don't *need* the Varia suit. As I said, you could also grab a few more energy tanks and you'll be fine, but that's slower for a speedrun. The beam attack does a set amount of minimum damage. If you have more health than this minimum amount, it'll drain your health to 1, but if you don't have enough health left when that attack hits, you die. This is why the commentators were so worried about ARC at the time because had he taken one more hit, the beam would have killed him.
27:09 ARC hitting the mock ball was such a hype moment in the run. Oats started pulling away leading up to that point and seeing ARC close the distance had me on the edge of my seat. Absolutely great runs by everyone
Want to call out ARC getting a short charge in Mother Brain's room. Does absolutely nothing, but it's quadruple frame perfect if I'm not mistaken.

Perfect race. Oats congrats on the win, and at the major risk of sounding corny, everyone won this. GDQ raised $100K in 45 mins, we got the Troll Mario maker race, Eddie and Hockey gave us the absolute best commentary and hype we could have asked for. We got 4 highly skilled players who showcased strats and variations and styles throughout, zero deaths and restarts and all withing minute3s of each other. This was honestly the best possible outcome. It was a pleasure watching you all practice in the leading months and execute on stage.
Congrats to all 4 of you and big thanks to Eddie and Hockey for keeping it fun and lively!

The short charge save at the end during the escape to fly up the shaft as the lava was rising was incredible.

So awesome watching my favorite SM streamers race the Any%. Seeing Oats run Any% for the first time in almost a year makes me feel something in my plums. Killer run, Oats. hitting a 42 with some added safety grabs is insane.
(it's possible I missed any warm up Any% that you have streamed recently. I haven't been on much as of late)
gg wp... going back for the animals, and *still* making it to the ship first, was icing on the cake.
Aalso, with that kind of lead, the double-back at the ship really added some last-second drama. Bravo!
All those randos are really helping Oats' execution, especially with how often he wall-jumps up bubble mountain. It's impressive just how much of an effect playing randos has.
Randos probably don't contribute very much, since they don't always include bubble mountain and the items will vary. But in vanilla, bubble mountain is approached the same way every run.
