I discovered Oats (and Andy!) through that SM/ALttP combo randomizer they did at a GDQ a while back, so this is a nice surprise!
I asked oats recently if he was considering another oats/andy rando at GDQ and he responded with a firm No.
I discovered Oats in that 3 way race at GDQ where 2/3 runners died to phantoon lmao

I think this was one of the most unique ideas for a speedrun, and I hope that more people try it out in the future.
This game in particular seems to really work well with a co-op mode.
I had the privilege of doing this exact run with Papashmo at sglive 2022. Was so much fun. I’m still in the middle of watching…I’m sure this run was probably better lol.

Beating the end of the game in molasses mode was great content.
This looked like a really fun event.
I love the super slow shine spark when oats glitched the baby metroid.

Just too bad Patty wasn't there to crap on Andy. There's a Patty-sized comedic hole missing from this run. But it's still great.
Andy's Super Metroid skills have come so far. Seeing Oats have a proud teacher moment every time Andy executes is so great
Genuinely one of the coolest runs I've ever watched. Very cool idea.

I grew up with Atari and Coleco, then the NES.
I still play a ton today but SM is my favorite game ever. I do a few runs every year and it's really cool to see people still at it these days!

Super cool run. Is there 100% map routing for this? I feel like it could really mess with the timing on some of the key items, especially Gravity.

This is probably impossible, but how cool would it be if you could see each other on the screen at the same time like an actual split screen co-op. Probably would no longer be a “rom hack” at that point but a different game
I always wondered if aiming up and down while running does something or is it just to be doing something.
It moves samus forward a pixel each time you "arm pump" it shaves off nanosecs in ur overall speedrun... lets say without it you beat the game in 00:59:59.999, arm pump it and you beat the game in 00:59:59.099... and that my friend makes a whole new world record...
I was curious to see Andy's any % time on the speedrun website but I couldn't find his name on there....he has to be in the top 50 right? is he speedrunning under a different username?

5:46 - Wait, this is trivia that people don't know? I thought everybody knew that. It was instantly obvious to me when I played it for the first time as a teenager and I loved it; thought it was an awesome callback. I mean, I know GPB isn't primarily a Metroid runner but still, if it's known to us filthy casuals, surely pros would know... I are confuse.

alternative way for 16:00 is to turn off high jump. I pretty much turn off HJ as soon as I get them, so you don't need them at all.

why cant GDQ have normal any% or 100% SM speedruns? I really don't get it.
1. This isn't GDQ. This is Speedrun Sessions. They have nothing do with each other.
2. Literally posted yesterday Oats' normal any% run from this same event.
I learned wall-jumping in this game forever ago and started trying to figure out sequence breaks before I knew speedrunning was a thing and I am TERRIBLE at wall jumping in Mario because of it.

I believe it's just an SD2SNES cart? (Google: Multitroid) tbh I'm utterly baffled. I've spent a lot of time trying to puzzle out how to make some kind of passthrough cart to enable this sort of thing on real hardware. I get the feeling that if I look into how this is implemented, I'm going to feel super-dumb. 😑

They look the same, it’s just a special cartridge called an SD2SNES. They are running a vanilla rom off of an SD card I believe and it has a usb output for reading/writing RAM

Why do people keep saying wall jumping is so difficult in this game? It's Dread, for example, that is UN-intuitive to me, having grown up on SM -- in SM you press the D-pad in the direction you WANT to go (*away* from the wall), what's counter-intuitive about that?
