This makes me cry. I was in foster care for years then I got adopted. My adoption life was a horrible experience. I'm so glad this worked out for this young man.
If that is you in the profile picture, I want to tell you how beautiful you are. I love the red lips and highlights in your hair. You have suffered through a terrible adoption experience but it did not take away your compassion for others or your beauty.
What a great guy. I am adopted myself. My parents were in their 50's when they started fostering children. They were what they called a therapeutic home, taking in troubled children. The goal was to send them their to "heal" and find a permanent home. They never intended to adopt. Then my 2 bio sisters and I came and the rest is history. We were the children that nobody wanted and mom and dad were our last hope before 1. A group home or 2. Our dangerous biological home. Mom and dad were able to see us for what we could be. They also wanted to adopt another girl, whom we fondly had already called sister. But sadly due to the court's stupidity she was sent back to her mother and vanished with her a few days later. I don't know what happened to her, but she is still my little sister in my heart.
@Not Real I'm sorry, I guess I didn't explain that very good. I was adopted with by 2 bio sister because my Mom taught very, very hard for us. Without her we would have been permanently separated. The little girl (Alexis) was not my biological sister, but another girl mom and dad took in shortly after we came to them. But mom amd dad were 100% going to adopt her so we always viewed her as our sister, and still do. It was her mother's boyfriend that almost killed her (though we knew the mom knew about the high level of abuse and didn't care) in fact we picked he rup from the hospital. So the courts decided she was safe. Thus handing her back to the mother and the mother did not keep touch with the court as she should. My mom tried to warn the courts something like that was going to happen (mom was blessed to be able to discern people amd has never been wrong yet), she begged them not to send her back but they did. I don't think there would be anyway to find her now. She has a very unique last name and mom can't quite remember it anymore after 20 years.
I'm so happy to hear that your experience being adopted by an older couple was good. The fact that they were a therapeutic home is HUGE, so they understand how to navigate and help kids with trauma. I also was taken from my parents at a young age and adopted by an older couple, in their 60's, but they didn't have any background in how trauma effect kids behavior/trust, ultimately leading to them unadopting me. I'm not saying this for any sympathy, im just wanted to input how happy I am that a similar situation worked out for you and how important it is for fostering families to have a good background in child development/trauma. I believe most fostering families have to take a class or complete something to be certified in their understanding, but it's interesting to think that some people can get that training and still not be good parents. It seems so obvious, but I've been many places and I can say, i saw and experienced more abuse than not. Granted, 10-20 years ago the system was a little different. It's changed a little, but it's not much better.
@@sporks3256 I am sorry that you experience was so bad! I told my mom about it and she says she'll adopt you! My mom since ending fostercare has started mentoring people unofficially. She just can't help herself lol. I agree training is a must. We were deeply traumatize kids with severe PTSD. Sounds like we might have been in at the same time. At that time the foster system was so new and PTSD in children still not understood fully. They told mom that we would never be normal and needed to go to a special school. What we needed was lots of love and loving correction. But mom says even some people that having been thoroughly trained can't do it. You have to have training, but you have to also have decernement and understanding because every child is different. We hit the jackpot. We are still in contact with one of our social workers and she said it is amazing how we've turned out, but she always had faith in us.

This should not be unusual & rare, but it is. Wow. What an uplifting & touching story. So proud of Finn for stepping up, & really really proud of Damien for opening his heart & trusting again.
This is one of the reasons I want to adopt when I get older like why would I have a child when I could give a child who is already in this world a home and loving parent.
Same, I know my current boyfriend have talked about this. He knows how much adoption means to me and I know how much having a child is to him so we made the compromise of having at least 1 kid then we can adopt.
What a fantastic ending! Damian was such a cute kid, and Finn Lanning has a huge heart and a lot of integrity. What a really beautiful story, so happy for them both!
Hearing him speak about the foster parents who will “be happy with you one day and kick you out the next” was absolutely heartbreaking. No child should ever have to feel rejected or abandoned. Children need love and support and direction to develop a healthy relationship with themselves and others so that our future generations will come to treat the world and those in it with more kindness and respect. This cruel and selfish society takes and breaks so much of our potential.
I could never kick a child out no matter how troublesome they may be, there is always a way to make things better. A child has so much time to change if it's their behavior, you never know what they will be like when they are older. I've seen very naughty kids turn into very humble adults. The people people kick them out are fostering for the wrong reasons. Fostering is really the same as being a parent it's a full time job and I think a lot of them don't realise that. They are not a pet fish you just leave to do whatever and feed every now and then.
Yep, this is so true. My brother and I have been through 7 foster house before we were finally adopted. It has created immense trust issues, abandonment problems and a general distrust against people.
Lots of people give teachers a hard time, but as a teacher, I can tell you that I’ve known many who have adopted or fostered, many times their own students. And most of us would and do give the shirts off our own backs to help whenever necessary. This teacher changed his student’s life. That’s so amazing.

This kid has a huge heart and is so well composed for his age. The teacher is an amazing person! You can tell these two compliment each other and bring out the good in one another
Being a foster kid is difficult enough, and this kid has to undergo regular dialysis on top of his other problems. Some people just have golden heart to share, like the math teacher. Adopting is a monumental task as an adult. Whatta guy.
Wouldn't wish this boy's struggles on anyone but he is so much stronger for it now. Finn is the epitome of what it means to be a man and a dad. A true hero. I wish you both well. And thank you Steve for sharing their story!

Obviously He’s 15 at the end of the video when the guy says ‘2 years later at 15’ and their talking on Zoom during Covid time. The first part of the video was shot before all that when he was 12/13
Damien is going to grow up and be a great person because of what Finn has shown him how to act and hold yourself while showing others respect, understanding and compassion
"Some people actually do that. They'll be happy with you one day and just kick you out the next" That is so heartbreaking. He's wiping away tears, but you can hear and see that he's gotten resigned to that reality. No child should ever have to feel that way. I'm not a foster, I had both of my parents growing up but they had... Unique...ideas about how to raise a child. One of the worst being that me and my siblings were told that disobedience was illegal, and that they could call the police at any time and throw us away if they were unhappy with us/our behavior. I'm so happy for this boy that he's found someone he can trust, who gives him the stability that all children deserve.

Man that kid is smart. I'm also happy for the Father. They both got family now.
Great story! I love kids. So sorry though that the littlest was given back to a reckless parent than, disappeared. I pray she's alright ❣️
Sounds like you for your happily ever after xx

Hearing him speak about the foster parents who will “be happy with you one day and kick you out the next” was absolutely heartbreaking. No child should ever have to feel rejected or abandoned. Children need love and support and direction to develop a healthy relationship with themselves and others so that our future generations will come to treat the world and those in it with more kindness and respect. This cruel and selfish society takes and breaks so much of our potential.
Thank you for saying everything I was thinking!!!
Dude. He is so smart
