Incredible sound quality. Control of the flams was spot on. You are a very mature player. Most people nowadays focus on how your hands look or the small cosmetic details. It's all about sound quality. And you definitely have that my man.
Congratulations for being selected to the 2014 U.S. Army All-American High School Marching Band. You've earned this honor. Thank you for posting your video playing the snare drum solo "Flamnambulous." Bravo!
Incredible. I see that you tried out for the U.S Army all American marching band. I hope you made it. If you auditioned for me with this performance I would accept you without hesitation. Great skill and timing.
This kid just blew my mind. I listened w out watching bc so many snare solo's that make it as viral RUclips vid's do rely on flashy stick work. I haven't gone back to view, but on purely musical terms this was just a beautiful percussion piece. Awesome. Maybe only drummers would say it's beautiful, but well, that's the price drummers pay when they decide to dedicate themselves to their instruments of choice. One thing I am certain of is that this young man is dedicated.
Congrats Jay on all your success man. I remembered distinctly watching your videos for guidance, advice, and overal tutelage in the craft of percussionist. You are definitely a genius in the craft. Keep on Transcending in all that you do in life!
Curious... if someone is really amazing at snare drumming like this guy, does it naturally go into the drum kit playing as well? Or are they different monsters?
Having dabbled in marching snare, and playing set primarily, they are very different. The ability to read charts, precision, and rudiment knowledge are very helpful -but it doesn't mean you'll be able to play set right off the bat. Some things will come much quicker though. Limb independence is a struggle regardless.
Technically yes. But practice of limb moment and timing is needed. With understanding your not the only beat of the drumline you're the backbone. But knowing marching snare drum lets you open up musically and sound avdanced.
They’re different monsters, but some of the skills are universal. The speed, rudiment skill, etc can be applied to both but limb independence takes time. Ultimately it’s different for everyone
I played set for years. I then did a live audition for the USMC at age 22. They wanted me to join the Band. I wanted to go to the D&B Corps. I was asked "did you ever play with rudimental sticks?" I had not. (I ended up in the D&B Corps and also was with the USMC Band. Most rudimental drummers sound really stiff on set and have a lousy feel. That doesn't always apply once they have played set for years though. With D&B Corps you train to play exactly like the other snare players. It does not "breath" so to speak. They really are two different entities.
I saw an old video of yours, and I was hooked. I'm 13, and also play snare drum. Please continue to upload. Say, you should do tutorial videos! HAHA. keep it up.
Alex Gaeckle Marty Hurley designed a drum for the Ludwig company in the early 80s where the whole middle part of the shell was gone. this made the snare drums louder without needing a scoop, and It dropped the pitch of the drum even when cranked. well on the older style traditional drums no she'll was a bad move. since the shell took the tension many drum shells actually busted so phantom scrapped the HV drums in 1986 I believe. the HV drums were revived in 1989 when Marty Hurley asked Val Schaff, a former student of marty's high school band, to design a new version of the HV drums. this leaves small supports in the middle of the drum instead of taking the whole middle of the shell out. Val continued to modify drums for people up until a few years ago where he's suffered a spine injury and can unfortunately no longer play or build drums. some of his drums are for sale on facebook is recommend them to anyone. I got his 1990 phantom regiment drum myself. you can hear the drums by listening to the southern miss drumline recordings. you can clearly hear the snares on the field. over all the HV drum is a truly beautiful instrument.

Sdj ayeeeeeeeeee

Missed the opportunity to make it chopz

Amazing!! Very very talented. I played drums in High School in 1960s. Was never anywhere near as talented!! Great job. Loved it!!👍❤️
this is a reason to play drums.
Incredible sound quality. Control of the flams was spot on. You are a very mature player. Most people nowadays focus on how your hands look or the small cosmetic details. It's all about sound quality. And you definitely have that my man.
He made it! Thanks for watching and for the comments!
I thought the title said, "He's Black", and I was like oh lord of course he is!
Omg me too😂

I agree. Great job!
I feel like I've watched this kid grow up on youtube. Amazing skill. I had no doubt he'd make it. I can't wait to see what he does next
You have a very nice house.
Derrick Wilson really
Lol
Dang, he made me smile! Such rudiment skills
legend has it that there is sheet music behind the camera
Lol
Wouldn't blame him everybody does it
No sheet music in video just practice at home.( with sheet music)
Now THIS I REALLY like. Clear structure and groove. Not a bunch of random flutters and stutters and repetitive stick tricks.
I just don’t like how it is a constant rhythm throughout the entire solo
Wow, the nostalgia is crazy.. thanks everyone for always supporting me, even the recent viewers WOW.
wowwww I didn't think I'd see you here
@@shelbygoff8666 It's me in the video, why are YOU here? Lol
@@jaskegoffii3968 I AM in some of this videos, don't forget 😒
Video was mad inspirational during middle/high school. 🙏🏾
And then there's me trying to do a paradiddle
A paradiddle, how about holding the stick?
@@mb2268 bruh
@@j9vlikz683 I know how now. You just grab it from the tip?
OUTSTANDING JUST OUTSTANDING

Heck yeah! Smoove as buttah, super clean and aggressive af! Well done, player!👍
Jay, my man! You've really improved over these years! It's really great watching and listening to you play.

I love snare drums alone more than the full snare set honestly. The precision and fast pace is exciting.
basically the 2013 cadets show music
ibrokeAstick what the ass no it’s not look at it again 😂😂
Ahvyon Drake "what the ass"? Learn to swear correctly, kid.
MC Zappa xDD
MC Zappa learn irony
Absolutely fantastically brilliant
That's the only way I can describe it
You are maturing into an incredible rudimentalist, and a great musician. Keep up the hard work. Best wishes on your audition!
Outstanding. Actual flams on a kevlar high-tension drum: stupendous. Whoever disagrees is a drumdumb.
AWESOME JAY!!! Amazing bro!!!! Simply FABULOUS!
Yes he does, Val! And he made it too! Jay insisted on playing his audition solo on his HV drum.
Fucking hell, you're good!
Way to be!!! Man I wish they had drumming like this up in Canada!
Amazing. So many cool hybrid rudiments and great playing
RUclips put this back in my recommendations so I could tell you that it's time for another update video
wow so good to see you back Jay you killin it last.
Damn, that was 7 years ago I'd sure like to see what he can do today. Right on & thanks

Excellent! Very well played!
Sweet. Real nice. Stunning sound off your snare.
That looks like the pearl championship marching snare! If that is, I am getting that for this Christmas.
teach me! mine sounds nothing like that. your snare solo comes out on top!
he looks so chill while doing this, I always tense up when I play snare lol

Yeah adding feet into the mix totally sucks playing drumset when you were a snare drummer , if my feet could do what my hands can do I’d kill it
Congratulations Jay!
Your snare is set so high!!!
There’s a chance it’s not and he’s just short. Source: I have this problem
Very nice !
Your technique is incredible!
That was really Cool. Wish I could do that.
Dude. This is awesome!
That was PERFECT!! Good job
@Tom Lawson it is called wind ;)
Awesome. Keep up the great work!

Is it me or is there nothing in the middle of his drum? like the shell? i'm so confused. Anyways good chops and sound quality Jay.
+Alex Gaeckle no there is no middle ply to the drums which is actually pretty cool
Phew not going insane.
It can make the drum louder apparently. John Wooten does this with the drums at Southern Miss

Somebody: It's a trap!
Me (an intellectual): nah, it is snare.
As someone who was in high school drumline, you would kick my butt in a competition. Nice job bud.
Nice job. Good snare by Val too!!!!
Oh, he definitely made it.

Love snares!
He doesn't need a drum corps. He IS a drum corps.
I love this.
Me:Snare drum solo outside
People outside:WHO SHOOTING!
Where can I find the sheet music for this? It's dope and I want to play it for the Regional Solo & Ensemble festival in my area
