My father loved this song. He passed away one month ago. But when I hear it, he is sitting right next to me calmly tapping on my shoulder. I really miss him
just about the most perfect song to get those emotions going - Powell has that innocent give- it - all-american voice - utterly stunning. this guy is so under-rated its criminal. you only have to look at who wanted to back him on this song to see how revered he is over here.
There are some great singers in bluegrass. I pray they are never pushed to record without feeling. Kinda used to the goodness after 50 yrs =) Love your comment.
went for a run last weekend and had this on repeat for 45min. did not get boring for one second. not sure what it is though, but it touched me big time
I went to watch the transatlantic sessions' performance in Manchester this year..His performance was amazing! God everytime I listened to this tune i felt like crying...
Oh yeah, love this song ♥ I play it outside in the streets to people passing by in my hometown in the Czech Republic. Not sure many people know it here, but I myself am always looking forward to this one on my playlist :)
And if you’re about to part from family & travel to lord knows where. Might never get back. That, I tell you, makes this song as unbearably poignant as the era from which it emerged.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
Just added this to my favorites...It's pretty amazing when all the pieces come together. Love how Dirk's banjo is so subtle and still driving in this. Quite the contrast to what the stereotype of the banjo is.
Having had the pleasure of seeing /hearing this thing of beauty performed live at previous Transatlantic Session gigs at Celtic Connections,I look forward to hopefully doing so again, when Dirk returns to Glasgow in Feb. with the rest of Trans. Sessions.
Quelle performance Mr Dirk .. Le vieille Europe vous trouve bien absent mais c'est un réel plaisir de vous entendre sur RUclips. On ne s'en lasse pas . Merci
It's one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Nothing tops the recorded version, on his Lp 'Time Again'. This particular recording of it is too self aware, it doesn't have the urgency or energy of that version for me, and yet of course it's a virtual hymn, as close to a religious song as I will ever get. The first time I heard it my Dad, now gone, played it to me, and I have to admit to crying, just out of pure reaction to the spirit of the song. It's remained in my top Ten songs of all time since, and I own over 4000 records and about 600 cds. I listen constantly, but nothing comes close, most of the time. I was so impressed at the time that I wrote to Dirk who was then playing in a Cajun band that had contacts online I found, I wrote two pages of thoughts and comments, rambling probably incoherently about how impressed I was and how important I thought the song was and what it meant to me personally. He was kind enough to write more back to me, then I had written him and for a short time we exchanged emails. It's truly a song from 'God'. Utterly sublime.
I just came to know about Dirk Powell after seeing a video where he was playing at a concert with Joan Baez. I am super impressed with the great talent of this artist. He is one fine artist!
With a few years playing this in four different tunings , I am now pretty sure his tuning here is e C# F# B C# playing in the key of E . . All the best , guy
Saw Dirk and band in Clifden Galway in January 2014 during stormy weather...this is my version.. I went out late one night The moon and stars were shining bright Storm come up and the trees come down Tell you boys I was waterbound Waterbound on Lettergesh shore Waves were rising to my door Roofs come off and the wind do blow Waterbound nowhere to go Cars went crashing off old pier wall Sea did howl and the gulls did call Beach washed bare on a winter night Water dashing t’would catch the light Black dog barking in the back of my car Rusty door and an old guitar the house is gone I lost my boat Waterbound and I can't stay afloat Its i'm gone and I won't be back Don't believe me count my tracks The Sea is rough and the sea is wide I'll meet you boys on the other side So say my name and don't forget Water still ain't got me yet Nothing but I'm bound to roam Waterbound and I can't get home
The "magic" of a studio recording comes from engineering. The magic of a live performance is the dynamic interaction between each player and the music, and that is something that cannot be reproduced in an engineered recording, in fact much of the time sound engineering is about getting rid of it. Old Time/Trad Country/Celtic music like this is alive and constantly changing, as Ralph Blizzard said "I never play a tune the same way once".
All these musicians are brilliant. Michael McGoldrick on low whistle is a musical genius in my opinion. He is English form Irish parents. Dirk Powell is into Cajun music and sometimes sings in French.
I went out late one night The moon and the stars were shining bright A storm come up and the trees come down I'll tell you boys I was waterbound. Waterbound on a stranger's shore The river rising to my door It carried my home to the field below I'm waterbound, nowhere to go. I carved my name on an old barn wall Or no one would know I was there at all Stable's dry on a winter's night You turn your head you could see the light. There's a black cat crawling on an old boxcar A rusty door and a falling star Ain't got a dime in my nation's sack I'm waterbound and I can't get back. Yes, I'm goin' and I won't be back If you don't believe me, count my tracks The river's long and the river's wide I'm meet you boys on the other side. So say my name and don't forget The water still ain't got me yet Ain't nothin' but I'm bound to roam I'm waterbound and I can't get home.
Thank you for the lyrics 3 yrs later. For some reason i chose that song to weak me this morn. I must of been thinking about it in my sleep .thanx you tube .
inspiration du vieux continent et du nouveau! la méchante bande d amoureux de la bonne musique que voila! mille merci de faire vivre ceci! youhouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
Thanks for posting this one, it is a gem. It is so beautiful. I wish there was a recorded version of this concert (mp3/4). I discovered (and fell in love with) D Powell from an album "Appalachian Picking Society" where he played Susan's Gone. I love his banjo playing among others.
A wonderful Powell original with no relation to the familiar traditional tune of the same name. Love the arrangements and emotional power of this rendition! If anyone has a lossless file of this to share, I am wanting to play it on my radio show in Colorado and would be very grateful. Merci beaucoup.
I can sing decent.....................but how did you learn to play the tune. And what instrument, ole-time banjo, guitar, dobro, whistle, mandolin.......................they're all in the mix you know, among some others. Is there a site like You Tube that could help someone like me......................I play guitar. I'm OK but nothing special.
I play it on guitar. I find that if you can pick the melody out as single notes, you can usually figure out the chords. If you google "waterbound dirk powell chords" you will find several sites that have the lyrics and chords, though maybe not in the same key as in the video. Dirk is playing in the key of E. It starts with the relative minor in E,C#minor, which is a bit of a bitch to play. The easy thing to do is capo at the fourth fret and play an Am shape, which will in effect be C#minor. With your capo at the 4th fret, the chord shapes in sequence would be Am,C,G,F,and back to Am. Let me know if you have further questions.
My father loved this song. He passed away one month ago. But when I hear it, he is sitting right next to me calmly tapping on my shoulder. I really miss him
Sorry for your loss. This truly is a beautiful song, your Dad had great taste 💛
Every time I listen to this, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I don't know why. That's music. That's art.
it's called Scots-Irish Soul brother. Welcome. Stay a while.
@@isabelasuplicy2658 Will bring tears to your eyes.....
I think that the unusual time signature helps create an unsettling effect.
It's called Goosebumps.😂❤
Me too
I first heard this song in a tv commercial here in Canada. The visuals from that commercial and this song always brings tears to my eyes. Love it.
dirk is criminally underrated
Never get tired of this❤
If you looked for a hundred years you would not be able to get a more talented group of musicians.Love this song and the series on T/V,Magical.
Dirk Powell is deeply talented and an excellent storyteller though his lyrics. I’m quickly becoming entranced by his music.
just about the most perfect song to get those emotions going - Powell has that innocent give- it - all-american voice - utterly stunning. this guy is so under-rated its criminal. you only have to look at who wanted to back him on this song to see how revered he is over here.

I went to watch the transatlantic sessions' performance in Manchester this year..His performance was amazing! God everytime I listened to this tune i felt like crying...
I first heard this in a workshop at a mountain dulcimer festival. It brought me to tears. And it continues to do so every time I listen.
What a line-up of musicians. One of my favorite songs
I listen to this weekly, if not more. best therapy I know.
I do the same .
Oh yeah, love this song ♥ I play it outside in the streets to people passing by in my hometown in the Czech Republic. Not sure many people know it here, but I myself am always looking forward to this one on my playlist :)
This song is so damn beautiful, I can hardly hold my tears back. Simply amazing how music can affect us.
And if you’re about to part from family & travel to lord knows where. Might never get back. That, I tell you, makes this song as unbearably poignant as the era from which it emerged.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?

This song is simply gorgeous.. I discovered Dirk Powell didnt know before.. Super..
Just added this to my favorites...It's pretty amazing when all the pieces come together. Love how Dirk's banjo is so subtle and still driving in this. Quite the contrast to what the stereotype of the banjo is.
This is beautiful. Pretty much everything I've heard from the Transatlantic Sessions has been phenomenal.

Beautiful ❤. just discovered this artist because of a movie, Christmas on the Bayou. Very happy I did as his music is delightful.
The best performance of this great song. All-star musicians; I wish Dirk would record more.
Having had the pleasure of seeing /hearing this thing of beauty performed live at previous Transatlantic Session gigs at Celtic Connections,I look forward to hopefully doing so again, when Dirk returns to Glasgow in Feb. with the rest of Trans. Sessions.
Beautiful. I keep listening over and over. never gets old.
Goosebumps..... always goosebumps....
Quelle performance Mr Dirk .. Le vieille Europe vous trouve bien absent mais c'est un réel plaisir de vous entendre sur RUclips.
On ne s'en lasse pas . Merci
C'est la musique d'espirit Scots-Irish (Ecossais-Irlandais-Americain) au bout. C'est magnifique
Stunningly beautiful.
It's one of the best examples I've ever heard of pure Scots-Irish Soul.

Please listen to the version from transatlantic sessions.
Nice song man, such a good name for it as well.
A great version and one of the all time great tunes to jam to - we played it over and over again last night - it worked well with my jet-lag.
Goosebumps. Beautiful.
Wish I could love this a dozen times, or so…
So enjoyed this!
My Dad used to play banjo as well as guitar and tenor guitar, brings back some good memories...
Dirk Powell, I love you. The absolute best song, and best version of the best song.

My goodness this song depresses me every time I listen to it---it is just incredibly beautiful!
Hauntingly beautiful!
Heard and saw that song live this year in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. just fantastic
Love this version, it's a whole new tune with that lonesome banjo, lyrics to match!
I just came to know about Dirk Powell after seeing a video where he was playing at a concert with Joan Baez. I am super impressed with the great talent of this artist. He is one fine artist!
Magic! I listen every day.
With a few years playing this in four different tunings , I am now pretty sure his tuning here is e C# F# B C# playing in the key of E . . All the best , guy
thank you!
What a great song and performance!
This is a great song sang beautifully. Love it.
I really love this and always will
The vocal harmonising is very impressive, not over the top, just soulful.
Magical, transatlantic sessions musicians. so good.
Saw Dirk and band in Clifden Galway in January 2014 during stormy weather...this is my version..
I went out late one night
The moon and stars were shining bright
Storm come up and the trees come down
Tell you boys I was waterbound
Waterbound on Lettergesh shore
Waves were rising to my door
Roofs come off and the wind do blow
Waterbound nowhere to go
Cars went crashing off old pier wall
Sea did howl and the gulls did call
Beach washed bare on a winter night
Water dashing t’would catch the light
Black dog barking in the back of my car
Rusty door and an old guitar
the house is gone I lost my boat
Waterbound and I can't stay afloat
Its i'm gone and I won't be back
Don't believe me count my tracks
The Sea is rough and the sea is wide
I'll meet you boys on the other side
So say my name and don't forget
Water still ain't got me yet
Nothing but I'm bound to roam
Waterbound and I can't get home

I watch this performance over and over and learn from it. So well done.
+John Keith So I do!
John Keith
Have to say I never tire of hearing it! We play it in D open tuning. Love doing harmony with my husband singing lead. He plays mandolin.
Incredible performance by all. Thank you!
Awesome! I love this old tune. These folks are great musicians.
What a lineup ! It doesn't get any better than this. Thankyou Tomt.
Michael McGoldrick is utterly mesmerising on the whistle
He’s my inspiration on the whistle, really lovely guy too
beautiful scots-irish soul
Thank you so much for uploading this. Can't stop listening either. So peaceful.
Love the harmony which comes in on verse 3 . Really adds interest.
Bravo, guys. Seriously. 👍👍
Beautiful song. What a star lineup.
All these musicians are brilliant. Michael McGoldrick on low whistle is a musical genius in my opinion. He is English form Irish parents. Dirk Powell is into Cajun music and sometimes sings in French.
Mike is my favourite musician he plays heavenly music.
So much talent on that stage.
I beg to differ.
I don’t think it could get any better.
Stunning arrangement, great voice, what a song .. . . .
How could anyone hit a "dislike" on this song????? Gorgeous!!!!!
There are insane, evil people out there.
I went out late one night
The moon and the stars were shining bright
A storm come up and the trees come down
I'll tell you boys I was waterbound.
Waterbound on a stranger's shore
The river rising to my door
It carried my home to the field below
I'm waterbound, nowhere to go.
I carved my name on an old barn wall
Or no one would know I was there at all
Stable's dry on a winter's night
You turn your head you could see the light.
There's a black cat crawling on an old boxcar
A rusty door and a falling star
Ain't got a dime in my nation's sack
I'm waterbound and I can't get back.
Yes, I'm goin' and I won't be back
If you don't believe me, count my tracks
The river's long and the river's wide
I'm meet you boys on the other side.
So say my name and don't forget
The water still ain't got me yet
Ain't nothin' but I'm bound to roam
I'm waterbound and I can't get home.
... thanks for lyrics! :-)

I’ve learned it on low whistle but can’t quite replicate the beautiful sound Michael McGoldrick does so effortlessly
Martin Laird
Please what key is the Low Whistle???
must be a hundred versions of this here on u tube...NO ONE does it better~
The sea is rising, this song will be sung around the world soon enough
There’s a version of this by The Fretless with Ruth Moody that is just about the most beautiful thing ever.
