The whole “So… how do you like my swimming?” scene is the image of me going through an exam, that’s multiple choice, feel like I’m getting racked over the whole test, finish hand it in, stress over the test, but when I passed I pop off, like it was all planned out!

Absolutely. Honestly one of my biggest pet peeves is how often people claim things as jokes when no joke was actually told. No punchline and isn't even funny? Not an actual joke.

This anime is an absolute MASTERPIECE! I'm so glad it still gets noticed, when so much 90's gems have been sadly forgoten.
I have to give you so much props for bringing up the Golden Boy OVA it’s such a gem, that the dub is Golden, and the animation and art is top notch while some parts are dated still somehow manage to really shine through regardless.I really hope that they rerelease it at some point by us my VHS and DVD need some rest.
I found this anime during my high school days a few years ago. I love Golden Boy. Especially the English Dub! So hilarious.
Golden Boy is fucking amazing! Probably one of the best dubs in all of anime too. Never would have expected you to make a video about this, but more people need to watch this underrated classic.

They're just right-wingers who are upset that artists tend to have left-wing politics. Japanese media doesn't have American politics in it so they think it's apolitical.
Riiight. Tell that to the people who enjoyed justice league unlimited yet dislike modern day superhero comics despite both shows having politics in them. The difference between them is that JLU isn’t written by people trying to shove THEIR politics down people’s throats or tell them why THEIR way of thinking is the correct one. This is why people have moved on from comics and exploring anime more, stop trying to remove context to fit your narrative as you’re ironically acting like the people I’m referring to.

@@LegendXD00 I think phrasing like "they don't tell people that THEIR way of thinking is the correct one" is inaccurate. Every story has a lesson they wan't to tell, and artists wouldn't be telling it if they thought they were wrong. The justice league show had political messages that they thought they were right about, but the big difference is that they actually displayed the arguments of the other side in good faith.

Especially when all you amounted was expose the fact that you actually DIDN’T watch justice league or justice league unlimited because the show at ZERO point brings up both political parties and “display the arguments of the other side” immediately taking away your credibility because you don’t even know what you’re talking about. The fact that you think politics only amounts to “which political side you’re on” also exposes the fact that you don’t really know what politics is really about and exactly what’s wrong with this generation-extreme lack of ignorance regarding topics they so strongly want to argue about.
@@LegendXD00 First of all. I said NOTHING about political parties.
When I said side, I meant the other side of the argument.
Secondly, I watched JLU and pieces of the original. And yes, they showed political opinions.
For the first example that comes to my head, the hawk and dove episode. Now, the political messaging is obvious here (and there’s politics in many other episodes, but more subtle/less central to the plot). It’s pro vs anti war, and I can say for certain that it ends with an anti war message. It makes the point to show that communication and understanding leads to a better outcome than destroying your opponents.
The thing is, it still shows nuance. Even in the obvious characters representing the two sides (hawk being violence and dove being peace), neither are played up as obviously wrong, and neither are made the punching bag of the story. They constantly bicker about the others point of view, each of them bringing up legitimate points, but overall both are portrayed as kind of idiots for so thoroughly sticking to their side.
Anyway, I could go on to describe the entire episode, but I think I’ve made my point that yes this show had politics (and so do most shows, even if not by intention. Most shows display the question of “what’s right and what’s wrong?”, and what is politics if not deciding what’s right and wrong?).
So anyway. Yes I’ve watched the show. Please don’t be so quick to discredit what others say just because they disagree with you.
Benkyo! Benkyo! Benkyo! Golden Boy is one of my favorite 90s anime. I used to have to go rent the VHS episodes from an Anime Store that had no night drop. I've got the final episode undubbed on Laserdisc, and at one point I had the first episode subbed and dubbed in the same format. I did read a bit of the manga and I agree that the change in tone was unsettling, considering Kintaro in the anime episodes was such a loveable loser who had all the enthusiasm in the world but no luck in love. Great overview and insight!

I watched this anime many years ago and the only scene I can remember is him riding his bicycle on a power line shouting his catchphrase.
I watched this long ago, maybe 20 years ago now, I can't remember. It's one of the anime recommended or mentioned in an online forum thread. The bicycle episode was so hilarious and memorable.

I'm glad you started covering anime and manga. There are some really well done stories that are on par with the best writing in DC or Marvel. My recommendation would be Liar Game, that manga is something else, the art direction is nothing to write home about but it makes up for it in story and battle of wits. Please check it out

Golden Boy was dubbed by ADV Films, so you got a weird situation where everyone except the main character was played by Evangelion actors. So Kintaro gets in trouble with Asuka, Misato, Yui, Ritsuko, Naoko, and Kyokyo Soryuu...

I'd say the problem with the current state of political commentary in Western comics is that they often have no story plans, and representation isn't a political commentary, it should be a character. for example: "let's make Superman Bi with a character we have no plans for "

it's not representing anyone, it's taking an existing character and forcing them into a new mold without context.
Can we maybe have some decently written relationships? Or maybe a decently written high or low functioning Autistic by someone who at least knows or has met someone Autistic personally?
As for genuine political commentary, it should be good fuel for storytelling. But in the west, it feels like it nearly never is.
It often feels like it's written by a politician who claims to have an opinion but they had the opposite opinion 10 to 20 years earlier.
Write something good, first and foremost.
