    I did the same thing in the early 80's on a 71 datsun 240z. Rustoleum has made some great advancements since then and you do a better job than I did. Very nice. May I recommend two things? If A tractor supply store sells tractor paint in your color of choice, I would go with it. Tractor paint has a far higher solids content and you'd be very happy with it. Also, if you you want to be sure to avoid any spattering, fill a bucket with warmish/hot water and set your cans inside. It helps if you do it. You did a superb job, young friend. Keep prepping and painting!

    You can buff all that out after a week to smooth finish and apply clear coat !! makes finish look much better !!! Then buff out clear coat and polish it. Gonna look way better, like real car paint

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 5 лет назад +1

      Nah, it's too thin to buff out really. You'd need a lot of layers in order to make it sandable. But it really wouldn't be worth it in the long run, paint won't last long. It'll start cracking and chipping here and there in a relatively short amount of time.

    • @markus2151

      C North NOT if you paint a protective clear coat over

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 5 лет назад +1

      @@markus2151 That's not how it works. You actually need to sand paint before you put on a clear coat, otherwise it won't really be glossy. You can have smoothly sanded clear coat, but if the paint layer isn't sanded, it's not going to look right.

    • @markus2151
      @markus2151 5 лет назад

    Rattle cans get too much hate. While a good paint job might be better, some people can barely afford the cheapest Maaco has to offer (or even potentially cheaper places for that matter) so this goes to show it can be a very good option for someone on a budget. Much respect and great work on this.

    You may not have the best paint jobs but I have to give you a e for effort. There are a lot worse things young people your age could be involved with. Just a little tip for you when painting with spray cans. Let the paint cans sit in hot water and the paint will lay down smoother and you will avoid a lot of the nibs that come out of the cans.

    I got really drastically different results based on the weather. This summer when I used the Rusto spray cans in hot weather it just came out nasty, but when I sprayed it on some doors a week or two ago in 50F or so weather, it all leveled off beautifully. I hope we can get a couple good days where I have time so I can get the whole car rattle canned again, unfortunately I rolled a few sections and sanding that out will be fun :/. The rattlecans are just awesome if you do it in good conditions, though.

    I spray painted my 1961 Sunbeam Alpine with 13 cans of red Rustoleum spray paint from Kmart in my Dad's garage back in 1969, and have been laughed at for the last 50 years .... glad to see someone else appreciates a simple but tough home made paint job. (and back then, spray paint was only 59 cents a can !!) Later on, my second car was painted at Earl Scheib for only $29.95 .. and they did all the work. Simpler times.

    I realize it's 4 years after the fact, but Rustoleum makes something called color shift and if you use it after your final coat of rattle can, it gives it that shimmer that professional auto paint has. It is really wonderful stuff. It takes a good paint job and turns it into a great paint job if it's used correctly. I redid my entire motorcycle with like $50 worth of paint, and because I finished it with that stuff, it looks just like the factory did it

    I and some of my employees spent a few days sanding and rattle canning some cheap service vans a few years ago, that and some stenciled 'van id numbers' turned a parking lot of 30 year old vans into a professional looking fleet. Never underestimate the power of the rattle can :) Edit: a trick.. we painted when humidity was high, and it started sprinkling 20 minutes after finishing last van. End result, the paint looked AWESOME.. and I think it was because the humidity and the temp, about 70 degrees, slowed down the cure time a little making the paint not streak. We did a buddy's van on a dry day for fun, and it didn't turn out as well, but it was a dry hot day. Next time around I'll do two coats and then rattle can clear coat, and maybe set up sprinklers or something a ways away to increase humidity.

This was certainly the best financial way of making the car look better rather than spending money you might not have to paint a depreciating asset. Doing what you can with what you have should be more peoples mottos.

    Take an additional hour or 3 sanding with like 600 or 800 grit. Then put trash bags over the tires. Surprised you didnt move the other cars. Wonder how much the wind blew onto the others paint jobs? Also would you paint your rims the same way or not at all? Gonna do my sunfire same way. But orange body. Black hood, roof, and trunk. Rims are being painted black with orange lug nut covers. Then orange under glow. And orange/amber and white strobes all over the place. I do security so I use them while working.

    My best friend owns and runs a shop started out using rattle cans in his parents garage. We all start somewhere. good results id just suggest that you work on your form a bit. spray in a more uniform pattern and seperate each panel into segments when you paint. Great job though keep up the hard work!
    edit: also look into learning and perfecting wet sanding. You can get really good results after using clear coat, wet sanding, and then a good polish and wax. almost pro results if you pay enough attention and do the prep work.

    Actually nice paint job for $25 . Probably wouldn't have guessed it was painted with spray cans .
    I wanted to do a quick spray can paint job on one of my cars but wasn't going to use rustoleam brand . Was going to paint the car the factory OEM Red color , that's available in the OEM factory Red . Would a clear coat be needed to be used after painted and then followed with buffing ? What are your thoughts on this ?
    Best
    Regards

    Damn if i had a place to paint like you have id build a paint booth, spray with base/clear from a hvlp gun, can even do it with two 5-6 gallon compressors,, make some real money, i pretty much started like you but i do body work(with some painting), people trust me enough to do there $100,000 cars/trucks,,, it got to point where i could do the body work with my eyes closed,,, your on there right path, need to start some where, but need to keep moving up

    Hey, so since it's so early on and you're likely to respond: if I want to use the Rustoleum Army Green but don't want it to be matte paint, and want to do a gloss clear over, can I do that safely over the matte paint, or is there an easy way to match one of their glossy paints to that color for use under a clear coat?

    • @JamesDguy
      @JamesDguy  5 лет назад +2

      If you use matte paint then do clear over it it will become glossy. I will eventually get to doing a video on this.

      KrispyyWombat Go to a body shop and ask for a garbage panel, or pull one from a wrecker, like a hood or something that isnt to dented. Use that as your test panel. Prep it properly and do all the steps you would on your vehicle and see how it turns out. Then leave it outside for a month or two so you can see what it will look like after its been a bit weathered. I suggest doing this so you A: Know what you’re getting into B:Can practice and C: Fully be sure you want to spend the money and time painting an entire vehicle

    Little elbow grease and some imagination. Good video, In the 70's I couldn't afford the Earl Shribe paint job, so a trip to kmart and 7 cans of spray paint was my fix. kudos.

      I had a 97 4 door that I painted, threw some rims on, dropped a 383 stroker motor in it, with a set of hooker headers running into a catback exhaust and the tip was one of them fancy one from the fast & furious, then dropped a holly carb with 50 pounds of boost and 500 shot of nitrous......its dropped my cousins panties like no other car could....smokey & the bandit didn't have shit on my Cavi babyy!!!!!!

    I painted a 59 Beetle like that and it took 6 primer and 4 cans. Would have preferred something like rustoleum but back then the only colors were cancer and the finish was semigloss at best. Primer + fine sanding does hide a lot of sanding sins just like rubbing compound on the finished painting.

    Good job!... What is the difference between 2x and advanced formula, which is better?

    • @JamesDguy
      @JamesDguy  5 лет назад +1

      I prefer advanced because it holds color and gloss better but dries slower. The 2x is faster drying and 2 times the coverage as your typical spray can paints. The advanced and 2x spray the same but dry different.
