    when you give an engine more air, you've got to give it more fuel to not lean it out.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад +6

      Correct. And the amount of fuel needed could vary even on a daily basis depending on humidity, temperature, and other factors. Using the tape to cover the holes drilled into the airbox lets you control the amount of air on-the-go, without always having to take apart the carburetor for maximum performance.

      @@bb2na473 Theoretically, the fuel injectors should compensate up to their maximum output level, after that point and if there is still too much oxygen, the engine will run lean if no safety measures are incorporated into the ecu.

      Not necessarily. Your not running a supercharger which forces air in then you need more fuel. These engines can run without a filter. They will not suck in more air than they need. This is why the carb has the flaps that open to allow air in. Run with a pod filter screw the box all together.

    I did this sort of on my Coleman rb100. I just took the front plastic cover off “air box” and zip tie secured the foam filter underneath and just drilled some holes in the tiny exhaust box. Made it just that much more peppy for a 100cc mini bike. And didn’t affect the carb and actually has a tiny bit of nice exhaust pops on deceleration

    I am of the opinion that a 2 stroke motor needs a big airbox so "dead air" is available for sudden wot use. The pod filters i have seen have a flat back and can cause a pulse wave which double carburates the main jet, which o er richens the mix. I think you are on the right track...

    Very interesting. If l could make a suggestion buy a few syringes and take off the black rubber plungers then select a drill bit roughly the same size as the inner part of the plunger and drill the holes to this size. If you need to cover the holes now you can use the black rubber syringe plungers and it looks great instead of tape.

    Theres no real point in drilling lots of holes in your airbox if their total area is much larger than the choke size of your carb. The carb wont pull any more air in than this choke size! The best you can do is to smooth out the air flow rather than have a complicated route into the carb. Unfortunately, this does mean that the intake will be noisier than standard but if you're not too worried about this, knock yourself out!
    Far bettter to find out the surface area of your carb choke and add holes that give, say, 10-15% more area to give the optimum flow rate without shot gunning your stock airbox full of holes you dont need!
    They'll only need to be blocked off again to keep the rain out!
    IE, for a 24mm carb area of 75.4MM squared, you only need 3 holes of 25.13mm squared, or 8MM. (about 5/16")
    Your 4 x 13/32" hole size is overkill given that you still also have the stock hole as well! (Unless you're planning to block this off!)

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  6 лет назад +1

      Very true and great comment. There comes a point where additional holes will not offer extra air because the bottleneck is no longer the airbox design, but rather the carb and engine size. In short, infinitely more holes does not mean infinitely more power is conveyed here. I apologize for not mentioning that and I really hope nobody turned their airbox into swiss cheese!
      Your second point is also very true. This mod will make your intake much noisier as evident in my subsequent episodes.
      With that said, my choice of the number and size of holes were entirely for 1) aesthetic - this is entirely a personal and subjective opinion of taste about symmetry, odd/even number of holes, etc. (yes unfortunately I am cursed with that sort of pet peeves) and 2) 13/32 drill was the first one I grabbed out of the raffle/tool bag, so 13/32 it is.
      I figured if I were going to upgrade piston and carbs in the future, should it ever happen, I wouldn't have to drill the airbox again.

    The guy I got my scoot from ran it with the tube to the filter box, mobox or filter, and wondered why it stopped running, it didn't have enough compression to start! The air was coming from about center of the rear wheel! Where all the dust is kicked up! Between that and running it with no exhaust! It was in sad shape, I didn't bother trying to fix it, I just replaced the top end, with a BBK! And about to go to a 52.4mm bore, and big valve head, and cam, I also have a intake, and 24mm carb, and a free flow exhaust, after the gear swap, and slider weight tuning, with the NCY rear sheave and clutch springs, I'm going straight to the 2k rpm springs, and Kevlar belt, the greatly improved head, and about 11:1 compression, and larger flow capabilities, it should make a lot more power! I'm hoping for about 15hp, from 86cc, at 10k RPM, if you want to go faster, the first thing should be a big bore kit, and gears! With a carb and exhaust, then tune the variator! And may as well do a cam and spring upgrade while it's apart, atleast a 20mm cv carb, under 80cc, or up to 20mm slide carb, and 24mm CV carb, the modified stock air box is a great idea, and over 80cc a minimum of 24mm CV carb, and upward of 26mm, with upgrade head, with larger valves of course, a stock head, no need to go over 20mm, a 24mm carb isn't going to help much on a stock head, maybe if it's ported, and the valves are unshrouded, if the valves are like my stock head, valves were, it would actually flow better with the valves chucked up and ground down about 1mm or do, they seated on the smallest part of the valve, putting a lot of valve in the way of the flow, and the machined Ridge from the seat being installed, shrouds the valve a good bit, improvement of the low lift flow, 80% of the flow is in the low lift portion of the valve opening and closing ramp, it's only fully open for a fraction of a second, but either opening or closing for a couple fractions, so improvement by removing obstacles to the flow, can improve power through out the power curve, possibly flattening out the curve by improvement at low rpm and high rpm power, slot of this can be done without cost, at home, but even a stock engine can use a jet change, going up 1-2 sizes, and adjust the needle to fine tune, if it does not want to even run properly with the needle in the lowest setting, the jet needs to be 1-2 jets larger, then set the needle about mid way, I'd test it out with the jet with the needle adjustment first, if the engine doesn't run with it lowered fully, go to a larger jet, it should run much better even stock with a slight jet change, but the spark plug will tell the truth, always check the plugs, it shouldn't look new, and it shouldn't look black a slight tan color of the insulator and the carb is about as close as it's going to get!

    • @FIFTYmil

      Nice read and great job. The spark plug is great way for crude tuning, but once it gets close to perfect tune you'll have to tune it with better equipments.

      It's entirely up to you- drilling holes provide a more direct path for which the air can flow into the engine. If you're not happy with the results you can always cover the holes back up making this modification quite versatile. The malossi red air filter on the other hand provides less filtration than the stock one. When you're using race filters like those, strict maintenance guidelines must be followed or you will risk contaminants getting into the engine

  • @csb772

    Not necessarily. Your not running a supercharger which forces air in then you need more fuel. These engines can run without a filter. They will not suck in more air than they need. This is why the carb has the flaps that open to allow air in. Run with a pod filter screw the box all together.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  4 года назад

      You are incorrect in assuming that only a supercharger will require more fuel. The air flow is restricted by the airbox baffles which are in place to muffle noises. Providing a more direct path will create more noise but also improve airflow. A pod filter is largely unprotected from the weather and elements and therefore not a practical suggestion for scooters that commute to work daily.

    • @csb772

      @@FIFTYmil FIFTYmil Not sure what you mean by your statement but any Supercharger or turbo engine will need more fuel than a non supercharger or turbo engine will. No way around it. Not sure what your back ground is but I have 20 years experience with all types of engines. Racing, commercial, mitlitary civilian etc. Yes you can run a pod air filter in the rain if you do it right. Not going to get into that but its been done on many applications. You can run a cold air instake also with a ram air if you do it right. How do you think car that come from the factory like the Trans am ram air is built? Rain doesn't mean nothing unless you are not creative.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  4 года назад

      @@csb772 My statement was in response to yours. Your first sentence immediately stated that I am not running a supercharger and therefore does not need more fuel. I am indicating that my modification provided a more direct path of intake which increased the amount of air going into the combustion chamber. As such, I had to increase fueling and thereby created more power.
      The fact that you "can" run a pod filter in the rain does not say anything about practicality and it certainly doesn't mean you should either. You "can" run an engine without a filter but clearly all manufacturers adopted the airbox and filters on all of today's vehicles for obvious reasons. Therefore I will not discuss further on that point.

I really hate it when accelerating. I mean it's really slow. When it is cold it goes like a rocket! But when it heats up... Such a pain. Tried carb adjusting- didn't help. I consider of changing the main spring to a red one in the clutch so this may help. Pretty sure the belt is done too. The top speed i can get to is 34 mph. The scooter has a 2T engine and I don' t think that this is all it can do..

      A 2T 49cc should perform better than 34mph for sure. You observed that it performs very well but once the engine warms up, it goes very slow. That's indicative of your fuel/air mixture being too lean. If you richen up the carb by first tuning the idle mix, followed by need clip position adjustment (if available), and then increasing your main jet your should preserve the performance you desire while running cold.

    Thanks for this great vid...I have a new '16 Vespa Primavera 150. It's fuel-injected and I've installed the Milossi exhaust system and the red air filter element. It improved my top end by about 6mph (from 66 to 72). I just did the Variator mod and installed lighter sliders to replace the rollers and that made a BIG difference in power but reduced my top end by 2-3mph; now maxing out at 70mph. I'm a believer in better intake systems feeding more air to help maximize the combustion efficiency. What do you think about doing your mod to my airbox? I ask because it's a pain to remove the airbox on this bike... ;-) I know...no pain, no gain.

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      Lighter sliders, if they gave you better acceleration, shouldn't reduce your top speed. What RPM were you at previously at 72mph and what RPM are you now at 70mph? I believe the lighter rollers may be slamming you into the rev limiter and holding you back.
      The airbox mod should work but two things to consider: 1) If you exceed the flow rate of your fuel injectors, you will be starving the engine of fuel and any additional airflow on top would equate to more power. Fortunately you can always tape the holes back up and perfect it to match your max injector flow rate. 2) The malossi filter element already filtrates less than the stock filter and the airbox mod would subject the engine to more direct (and often dirty air). Strict maintenance guidelines must be followed to ensure as little contaminants getting into the engine as possible.

    • @raymaramara1979
      @raymaramara1979 7 лет назад

      Thanks! I don't have a tach hooked up yet so I don't know the RPMs...when you say slamming to the rev limiter, how and with what does the factory set that up? Can I override it? I'll do your airbox mod next rainy day! Cheers!

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад +1

      Often found on 4-strokes the factory ECU governs at what RPM to cut back the engine, and thus forming the rev limiter. Certainly a lot of aftermarket CDI's can and will override this because peak horsepower can be found beyond this limit. One way to do this is to fool the factory ECU into thinking that the RPM is not exceeding the limit. I installed a NCY CDI into my 4-stroke Honda Ruckus and I ride it at 9900RPM.

    • @raymaramara1979
      @raymaramara1979 7 лет назад

      Unfortunately, I don't have a tach so I can't tell your the RPMs. I DO have the add-on tach that clips on to the spark plug wire but I can't open up that door yet until after warranty period. I was warned by the dealer. However, opening up the clutch/variator cover was OK. Go figure...

      That's hilarious. Add-on tachs are non-invasive and tachs like the one I use (episode 0) virtually just wraps around the splug plug wire and it can already tell you the RPM. No wiring, no soldering, no plugs. Just wrap a simple wire around the spark plug wire and you're good to go.
      I'd be impressed how they would find out if you have ever installed a tach to your bike.

    And it rains

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      Yes but it depends on your airbox. The effectiveness depends on how restrictive your airbox is and the path of travel for the air. Create unnecessary turbulence and your airbox will flow even worse than before. The good thing about this mod is it is reversible. If you're unhappy with the results, plug the holes back up!

    • @FIFTYmil

      Jason, if it's only a mid range issue I would consider just adjusting the idle mix (check out my other video on that) but are you sure your bike is performing fine at WOT? (wide open throttle). Typically with a pod filter I see both a idle mix adjustment, needle clip enrichening (if available), and stepping up the main jet. Pod filters are one of the more intensive modifications for the engine compared to something like a roller weight change.

    Use some Motocross Air Filter Oil on that foam and no dust will enter ...

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      Using yamahlube filter oil already.
      A common misconception is that filtration is either 0% (no filtration) or 100% (perfect filtration) when in reality the foam filter's performance is a spectrum depending on variables like how much oil you used, how dusty your riding condition is, how direct air is being fed to the filter, etc.

    • @clausb2063
      @clausb2063 7 лет назад

      perfectly right. I meant applying some filter spray on the surface, followed by a soft massage to penetrate the top layer of the foam, forming a thin, but yet homogeneous pelicule of fine oil catching any potential harmful city dust. Drowning your foamy is not a solution!!! :-) by the way I use Putoline

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      Yes - too much oil would in fact gum up your carburetor and can also decrease performance.

    -Näätä

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  8 лет назад

      Most of the time exhaust spitting flames can be associated to a overly rich condition. This does not mean it's bad as many tuners like to err on the richer side for better engine longevity at the cost of poorer fuel mileage.

      @FIFTYmil  8 лет назад

      ***** BraapBraapWheelie It is hard to tell what is the cause of the backfiring based on just the information you have provided. As Randal mentioned, engine detonation could be one of the many scenarios - but not the only one. What size engine do you have? Is your engine carbureted or fuel injected? Does the backfiring happen after you shutoff the throttle abruptly, while accelerating, or in other situations? What was the last change you did to the motorcycle you noticed the backfiring?
      Based on the improvements you found, regardless, I don't think you will have "blown up valves, engine, or pipes that will blow apart" lol. That seems like a bit of a over-generalized paranoia coming from someone who ruined multiple bikes already, doesn't it? ;)

      1) Tachometer
      2) Determine your current RPM and identify your engine's peak horsepower RPM
      3) Complete any modifications you would like to do to increase engine horsepower
      4) Determine the new RPM and how close it is to your peak engine horsepower RPM
      5) Tune the roller weights to target your peak engine horsepower RPM.

      Cal-Metal Desu yes but with fuel injection you are limited by the flow rate of the injectors. Providing more air than their flow rate will result in a lean condition. The good thing about this mod is if that problem arises, you can just tape the hole up and tune on the go.

    • @roythearcher
      @roythearcher 7 лет назад

      With fuel injection it's best to leave the airbox and induction well alone unless you have access to a rolling road dyno and can re-map your ECU. Just let the mass air and air temperature sensors compensate for exhaust changes untill you need to go further and are prepared to spend a lot of money for what is, not a lot of gain!

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  3 года назад +1

      @@2SmokeyGuru Good point about the leak in. If a scooter is parked in a heavy down pour the rain will definitely get into the airbox. However, more water would make their way into the engine with an open filter while riding because the carb is directly facing the rear wheel where the water is being kicked up and splashed around. With holes in the airbox you can easily tape the holes up and it would perform as well as stock against the weather.

    that doesnt give you more power... unless the airflow thru the snorkel is better

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      Airflow through the snorkel has increased and more power was found as shown in the following episodes...

    • @reiniervanderheijden1260
      @reiniervanderheijden1260 7 лет назад

      FIFTYmil yeah but i was talking about the air filter, the snorkel has increased air flow because its more smooth thru the corners and it has less corners. sure it will gain hp but not because of the air filter

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад

      offroad idiot That didn't make any sense at all. It gained horsepower because of what I did to the airbox cover. The air filter was left untouched.

      FIFTYmil oh im sorry, didnt watch the whole video lol, but i wanted to say was that a simple filter will do a good job as well but the airbox is restrictive but you fixed that in the way you could for the less amount of money :)

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад +1

      A less restrictive filter will improve airflow at the cost of less filtration, regardless of airbox design. A more direct approach shown here is to bypass the baffles and pathways integrated into the airbox design. Agreeably they are there in the first place to reduce noise, emissions, and provide better all-weather performance so you are indeed giving some of that up for better performance under ideal conditions/conditions I ride my bike in. That is the cost of modification tuning

      Yeah all of my scooters including insurance and gas money are now basically free (or have paid themselves off) with a total view count of more than 2 million views. Thanks!

    do I need to rejet the carb after doing this ?

    • @FIFTYmil
      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад +1

      If you leave all the holes covered/plugged, in theory it should be the same as original and no jetting is required. When you increase the airflow by opening up the holes, then you must rejet in order for the engine to produce more power.

    HI BRO.
    am from india and own an APRILIA too, mine scooter is APRILIA SR 150, with 155 cc engine max. torque 10.4bhp @6750rpm max. speed 120kmh. can you please suggest me helpful mods for practicality and cosmetic and technology ,not performance. and is it OK if I colour the silver cvt box as BLACK.
    love from India 😊

      @FIFTYmil  7 лет назад +1

      Yes it is absolutely ok to paint the CVT case black if you know how to do it correctly. One of my favorite mods to the scooter is a side kickstand, lower handlebars, and a cell phone holder. Check out the holder at this affiliate link: goo.gl/YRppLv

      +THE KILLA - Had an Iridium spark plug, gap it to 0.9/1mm.
      Keep the scooter clean and well maintained. Tires pressure checked.
      Lube all the key locks/hinges (WD40 or equivalent).
      Maintain the air filter immaculate clean. Had a good fuel filter.
      Had a couple of hooks for cargo load, carry a few bungee cords,just in case.
      Had some carpet in the under seat compartment... Enjoy. ;-)

      Marcel Celliers So based on your analogy, since I own two superbikes, I ought to say - "Marcel, please buy a real bike and stop playing around with your little thing that you call a motorcycle"
