  • Опубликовано: 19 авг 2024
  • Video Checkpoints:
    1:21 - Removing the carburetor
2:34 - Removing the non-serviceable or "tamperproof" screws on the carburetor
6:38 - Swapping the main jet
7:50 - Introduction to the new performance exhaust
11:25 - Removing the stock exhaust
13:55 - Installing the new performance exhaust
    17:05 - First start-up with new exhaust
18:13 - Inspecting the spark plug to check the tune
19:52 - Reaction to the upgrades
21:54 - Exhaust gasket has failed
23:34 - Adjusting the carburetor's mixture screw (bleed screw)
29:00 - Replacing the blown headlamp (headlight) bulb
32:38 - Final thoughts on the carburetor re-jet and performance exhaust
In my experience working as a technician in independent motorcycle shops I worked on everything from CVO Harley Davidsons to Honda CT90s. But there was one bike that always stood out with exceptionally poor quality. The Tao Tao 50cc GY6 (139QMB) scooter. And now I'm going to put this scooter to the test and find out if they really are little money pits, or if the issues with the bike are a result of the people who buy these kinds of scooters.
So I purchased a Tao Tao "Pony" ATM 50 and my plan is to make it my main means of transportation for 6 months. Yes from June 1st to January 1st this little scooter is going to be my daily driver. I'll be logging all of the miles, issues and expenses of keeping this scooter running in a log. Doing this will allow me to present a true cost of ownership at the end of this experiment.
The Tao Tao Pony 50 is based on the generic GY6 139QMB platform. They were sold under many different "Brand" names like Wolf, Bintelli, Fly, Rocketa, MotoBravo, Italica, and Dongfang just to name a few. You may be riding one and not even know it!
My scooter has been running lean since it was delivered. This is not unusual for a 50cc GY6 scooter. They are typically jetted extremely lean. This might be because it helps them pass the strict emissions regulations for the United States or to purposefully slow them down in order to meet the "Moped" regulations here in the US. Either way my scooter was running so lean I didn't expect the engine to last long. So I ordered a cheap jet kit off amazon (to stay in the spirit of the experiment with one of the cheapest scooters of all time).
There are a few reasons I did not just re-weld the bracket when I got to work or when I got home. The biggest one is I'm not sure what I would have to "charge" for that repair on my service sheet. In addition to that, most shops wouldn't repair something so cheaply made with such a high likelihood that it will fail again. But the main reason I didn't weld the bracket back on was my ethos of repair. If something fails, it's an opportunity to replace it with something that will better serve the machine. Rather than spending $70-100 getting the same unreliable part back on the tao tao I'd rather spend $40 on a lighter exhaust with better brackets that will be less likely to break in the future.
The exhaust and jet kit did make a pretty significant improvement in the performance of my scooter, but at the expense of the fabulous fuel mileage I was experiencing.
The parts I've used in this experiment are so far are:
    Bel-Ray 10w40: amzn.to/3d623vR
    Bel-Ray 80/90 Hypoid gear oil: amzn.to/2N3yFft
    NGK CR7HSA spark plug: scooter911.com...
    Brake line: www.scooterwor...
    Performance Exhaust: amzn.to/2GfzQs4
    Carburetor Jet Kit: amzn.to/32UtBTu
    Drive Belt: amzn.to/3hC3rt2
    Headlamp bulb: amzn.to/37huSVn
I make my adjustments to the mixture screw using this Digi Synch Manometer/Synchronizer: amzn.to/37B81nl
Follow my experiment in real time! Here is a link to my Tao Tao log/Health Report!

Damn thank you so much!! I just bought my girlfriend a 150cc gas razor scooter. When it got delivered 75% assembled. I completed the assembly and my girlfriend was really happy and excited to try it out. Well that didn't last long when she went to ride it she pulled back on the throttle just a little bit and the scooter took off surprisingly fast I wasn't expecting it to be that powerful when starting from stopped position. She ended up crashing into the curb and now scared to ride it until I adjusted throttle

I prefer the LED BA20D bulbs. most suck, but I found a couple good ones. Bad ones either don't work at all or flicker horribly at different revs, and require Capacitors and other components to be wired in to your harness to eliminate it. After going LED I haven't needed to replace it, They're also much brighter (which is great for safety). If you do get the incandescent bulbs still, go with the Sylvania bulbs, they're half decent. Also keep an eye on your Voltage Regulator if you pop another bulb again, that's one of the first signs that your regulator is going bad. Lastly, avoid the halogen BA20D's, they run so hot, they'll melt your headlight housing.
Also, while you're at it, put in an LED Brake light, you definitely don't want that burning out on you! They work great, and are easy to find.

The automatic choke adjust screw often being glued. It can release by boil it in water about ten minute. The basic adjust is: Heat it up by battery and put it in its place. It needle must shut its jet completely. When it cool down, needle rise and jet opening.

Dude...I just did this same thing you did in this video today... but when I did it, I snapped an exhaust bolt that mounts the exhaust to the engine block and...that...that took me all damn day to fix :/
Between the exhaust bolts, and the crappy exhaust pipe not being made for the Tao Tao (yes...I used the same one you did...even after I watched the video...) AND doing the valve adjustment and oil change... I am tired.
But the Tao Tao looks and sounds good. Now I just need to tune the carb ( which means I have to drill out the tamper seal for the fuel mixture screw :(... ) And then it'll be ready for springtime Funtime :D
Thank you for your kickass tutorial videos. You are a great teacher :)

Hello, I have a problem, I have a Peugeot Speedfight 1 100cc that recently seized up/heat seized. It was not tuned. I then changed the cylinder, piston etc. It now starts up right away, but after a while it dies all of a sudden (as if you had turned off the key) and then I can start it right up again, this usually happens when I go over 60 km/h or uphill.
When I changed the cylinder etc, I also cleaned everything thoroughly, such as the carburettor, intake, new air filter, new fuel filter (there was no fuel filter before) new spark plug. I also removed the oil pump and put a metalplate with a gasket over the hole instead, I now mix the oil directly into the gasoline.
Some other info that might be important.
    - When I drive over 60 km/h, it starts to make a noise from the variator (CVT), it´s sounds quite a lot.
    - When it died, I tried to start it again while it was rolling and then it started right away, but it made a noise from the variator, like something "let go" that had been seized up, like a rubber sound, maybe from the belt.
    - The variator belt touches the variator cover on the inside and has grinded a cut in the metal.
    - In the variator, where the weights are, the belt does not go down to the bottom of the wheel.
    - The clutch bell had turned blue from the heat.
    - The place where the connecting rod attaches to the crankshaft had turned blue from heat.
    - There was no fuel filter on it before. But i now saw there is an internal fuel filter in the gastank, can it affect the vacuum if you now have 2 fuel filters.
    Please help me.
    Regards
    Andree.

I've got a taizhou mp50, which is like a generic tao tao with different plastics, and the exhaust bracket broke off the bottom of my muffler, so I just cut the bottom mounting bracket off, chopped the tip, tore the inside of the muffler out so it was no longer reverse flow, and welded a 2 inch piece of steel pipe off the bottom of a broken cattle gate on the end, so far its holding up great, i picked up 1mph on my top speed, and it sounds like a honda fourtrax now, even more so with the 100cc bbk I just installed yesterday.
Also that's a LOT of backing out on that idle adjustment, the PDQs I've got on mine want 1 and ⅞ turns for sea level, and I'm only at 1000, so that's where I stick em, if I need too, adjust until the exhaust smells right

I have not seen a mechanic since the 70s when I was in high school and my first boyfriend in 1977 who was a tuneup Masters Pro, could look at a spark plug and tell you what was going on with the engine or carburetor in a bike or car!!! you're too young to know that tune-up Masters technicians were considered professional mechanics back in the 70s lol! I love your wit and your smarts!! and yes living with two taotaos has been rough, but I believe that if I can't fix something then I don't need it! lol.

I have the same exhaust on my stock 150cc Roma and it dose fantastic, I was In the same boat myself though didn’t come with the bolt I needed that goes with the clamp to mount and I had to weld/modify because the pipe they sent me was to Short too reach the head on my scooter 🤦‍♂️ upgraded the spark plug as well and runs and sounds amazing after everything I’ve done so far (not finished with it yet)

Be careful. Main jet only changes 3/4 to full throttle. Needle and pilot jet does the rest. 0-3/4. Not such an issue with a 4 stroke but a 2 stroke will lock up at half throttle with said changes 👍

American prices are a rip off. I got a full replacement exhaust with EGR valve and gaskets for £19 for my 50cc gy6.

I always wondered how they get the float bowl screws in the carb tight from factory

    • @Scooter_911
      @Scooter_911  3 года назад +5

They actually are special break-away screws. They have a regular hex drive head on them initially but when they bottom out they keep tightening them until they snap the drive head off. Leaving behind a "tamper proof" fastener

About those weird headlamps 29:45, the only reason they use these is because they are slightly cheaper to manufacture.
Feel free to swap them for halogens.

Thanks for the video series. I know it may be an illusion, but it looks like there is an in-line fuel filter on the crankcase ventilator tube and none coming down from the fuel tank.

It truly depends on your evaluation not just the mods. In general it's better to be richer then leaner. So, go up like 5-jet sz.
Then back down tell you start losing power. You should find your sweat spot.
      Good luck to you!

If you have the front piece off I would put a better head light in than stock,I put a 1400 lumens in and can see everything and also in there should check brake fluid

I have a tao tao also. It runs great. It's pretty zippy. Picks up speed well right off and cruises nicely. I'm wanting more speed going up hilly terrain. Can that be achieved through carburator adjustment or through CVT upgrade or both? It has almost 5,000 miles on it; everything stock except CDI and coil. Thanks for the exhaust tutorial. Most useful as I'm replacing mine also. After that it's brakes. Oh another question I have is about wheel bearings? When/if they need replacing... Thanks again. I've enjoyed and benefited much from your videos.
