I own Sony XM5, XM4, Bose QC Ultra, JBL Reflect Flow Pro, Marshall, Beats, Jaybird, Sennheizer, 1More to name a few. IMHO as normal consumer, Sony's strength is "Neutral" while other brands depend heavily on their own signature sound. Sad to say there no such thing as 1 earpiece/headphone for all genre and use. If i were to pick only 1, the best overall.. ill pick.. SONY. Not ultimate but can never go wrong. Sony.. Simply Satisfaction. Still.. if prefer certain type of music more than others or for movie then Sony is not the best choise. For rock, metal, punk or any band music, nothing defeats Marshall. For rap and hiphop, Beats the best. For EDM, pop, jazz - Jaybird. If looking for the ultimate bass and hometheater-ish.. BOSE. For JBL.. meh. Sennheizer kind of like JBL only lesser bass. All have 1 weakness and that is relying on 1 driver to produce every sound. Why can't big companies provide more drivers for certain sound?! It's not like nobody done this before. 1More has quad-drivers! No matter how good that 1 driver and software is, more hardware is better and has greater potential. Obviously 7.1 surround system is far better than only 2 speakers stereo.. OBVIOUSLY. Thanks reading my little rant. :)
Irony, i just listened to this through WHXM1000-5's. It was important to do so due to these headphones clarity. Frankly, i'll get some ULT's, because that bass, mmmmmmmm mmm mmmmm, YUM! movies will sound so much more in depth, and I love my bass tunes. My '5's will serve their purpose for everything else as i travel over 10000kms to go to and from work each fortnight. The talk through feature is a pain in the arse.
@smilee7338 ults bass is good, but i ended up getting annoyed with the sound quality. So I gave them to my other daughter and strictly use the XM5's now as you loose way too much theatre with the drop in sound quality.
Nice, not a bass head but I can see using the ult wear for certain types of music and it sound like you really don’t sacrifice much in terms of anc. Once they drop the requisite 25% to $150 in 6 months then I might buy them.

I don't understand. Many of you prefer XM4. But if I tried to listen XM4 and XM5 in all scenarios XM5 has better and cleaner sound. Even if I tweak EQ.
08:09 - It'll be fairly easy to achieve more of an 'XM5 sound' just by tweaking the EQ in a media player app around the 3.5KHz/4KHz up by about 10 Db, so, a reasonable quick fix for the Ult Wear & XB-910N... 🤔😏. I still have an old set of MDR-XB950 (cabled) amongst my multiple headphones, and, after a bit of tweaking of the EQ in my preferred choice of media player app - 'PowerAmp' (AND.. with a slight 'Hardware tweak' - small squares of black Gaffa tape covering the Bass vent holes at the top of each ear cup), I've improved the sound of these XB950's greatly! I still get great LOW Bass, but, NO more sound smothering 'Boomyness', noticeably more brighter, detailed and a lot mroe balanced overall! 👍 Other sets I own - Sennheiser PXC-550II, 'Hur-Dur-six-Hungeo' (Haha Dankpods), Meze 99 Neo, DT770 Pro, and I'm currently looking at the new Sennheiser HD490 Pro as a potential next buy... 😎🇬🇧
I had the Ult Wear for a while and they were great because of that bass. With the EQ, I made the sound bass-heavy and clear at the same time. However, I got the new XM5s for 180 euros, so I returned my Ult Wear. I would prefer the Ult Wear over the XM5s if you had to buy them for the retail price. If you really love bass, get the Ult Wear; they were amazing.

Of course, there are also the XM4s, which are also great, but I have not tried them myself. So maybe the XM5s if you want to spend more money, the XM4s for less money and great quality as well, and only get the Ult Wear if you want that huge bass.
Thank you for your detailed videos. I've been looking for headphones with noise cancelling for a while but I'm still a bit overwhelmed. The sound is very important to me when I listen to music as well as the noise cannceling. Bass is actually not important to me. I prefer very good sound quality. In fact, I can't quite make up my mind yet - the Sony WH-1000XM4 are still a bit too expensive for me at 270 euros. I'm thinking about getting the WH-CH720N or the Sony Ult Wear or Bose quietcomfort sc. Which would you prefer? Or do you have any tips for better headphones up to 200 euros?
I recently purchased the Sony XB910N and if you like bass, they are NOT it! Sony’s bass is a joke. Get the Skullcandy crusher evo instead. You’ll be much happier.

@@Quast I don't know what to tell you. The 910s sounded so boring and messy to me. Bass was boomy and not well defined. The rest of the range was distorted and muffled. ULTs sound way more airy and make me feel like I'm part of the music. The difference was so dramatic to me that I returned the 910s (and I hate returning stuff), while the ULTs are probably my favorite headphones of all time :) I'm also not sure why you'd turn ULT off? It's what makes them feel good. And it doesn't just turn up the bass, it changes the general sound signature. If you really hear something different, it must just be different people perceiving sound differently and different tastes.
Listening to my Sony WH520. WH520 is my starter headset and i’m already impressed planning to get another headset from sony so planning to get either ULT or XM5. XM5s are 2 years old product maybe imma wait for XM6. Not really a bass head but the other features of the ULT is amazing and waay cheaper than the XM5s. Naaah! I wanted to upgrade from my MDR XB650 so obviously went on ULT. They are very comfortable, ANC is life changing, very good bass but... I am going to return them. With ult I miss basically crisps mids and highs that I had in my old MDR. I couldn't even equalise it to have it back. If you listen ONY hip hop could be fine (to me Eminem voice, which is high, sound different from the normal) but I also listen to rock. So sad
No thanks the xm5 sounds way better in this comparison. I mean it makes sense that they sound worse but im not willing to make that compromise just to save 100 Euros.
XM5 is the first of the WH-1000 line-up that has nice sound overall. I also like to hear the other details, and not have stuff covered up by overly boomy lows.
So here's my only concern. I got the ULT Wear and I love them for the most part, with one exception. They need more volume. One or two more volume steps would do it for me. I also have the crusher anc 2, and they have slightly higher max volume. So I'm gonna spam this comment around, maybe we can convince sony to give this to us via a software update. I know they want to protect our ears (avoid lawsuits), maybe they can program the headphones to give a loud volume warning like many phones already do and keep it pushing. some content is just recorded at a lower volume... LETS ALL BEG SONY FOR THIS UPDATE!!
The XM5 has much better and cleaner sound. The ULT is too boosted and just doesn't have clarity and the ULT button is horrendously bad with adding Bass. It's just muddy and rattling and sounds like the headphones are broken.
does anyone know how to permantely fix the whitenoise during ANC in CH720N? Sony says it's normal but when it blow it with hair dryer it's disappered temporately
There's nothing you can do to fix it. I have the same headphones and it's sadly just a quirk of them. I used to have Xm3s and they didn't have the same issue so I suppose it's dependant on price.

Could you test the XM5 for gaming. in regard to windows drivers and software and battery (wireless + mic) and possible wireless sound interference and noise reduction from the pc case fans and key clicks. maybe make a video about it. it would be really cool. cheers.
I do not really understand why everybody forgot XM4, they sound much better from rest of this crap,and the 40 mm drivers are the most obvious reason why they sound better
I tried both XM4 and XM5, and the XM5 sounds much cleaner overall (while still fun), and has a more controlled, cleaner, better quality bass, rather than the "boom boom" of the XM4... Even if you EQ the XM4, they just don't sound as clean overall as the XM5. I also owned the XM2 and the XM3, and the XM5 is the best when it comes to the sound. I'm curious how the sound will be improved on the XM6, whenever they'll come.
You lost some pounds, looks good, Aaron! I chose the xm4 over the xm5 due to the plethora of reports of broken hinges with the xm5 in the internet. Even my xm4 have a tad to much bass for me and start to hurt the top of my head after a short while of wearing them, so I usually grab my Bose qc45. The Ult are still interesting though, due to the good anc for way less money than the xm5 and I like the green color option though.
I was also worried about the XM 5 hinges but really i think its totally avoidable by not holding the head phones up by one ear cup as that will make them swing around and that puts a lot of pressure on the hinge. Still a design flaw but not a fatal one, i just hold it by the head band or both ear cups.
The ULT sound more bassy and fun. The XM4 have slightly nicer feeling build and are going for a more "accurate" sound, but don't sound as fun and bassy.
I really want to know about the on-ear fit. I've tried all of the headphones compared above, and the 720n have the most comfortable fit for me. How does the ear fit of the ULT Wear compare to the 720n?
I want to buy headphones from Sony. I will listen mainly to rock, soundtracks and other instrumental music. I also sometimes listen to electronic music. Which ones are better to take? @@arress2052 First charge was strange. Even though they stayed connected through the night, the LED didn't went off and it should according to the manual. Then I had some crackling in the with some songs. Have to investigate. Maybe it's my Bluetooth setup but the WH-1000XM5 work fine with the same PC. I think they have less rumble than Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 but more pure sonic bass. Also the mids and highs are much more clearer. In Skullcandy they are more smoothed out. But I'm not an audio expert and it's just how I feel.
@@arress2052 So after a week of daily usage I had no problems with them. There were no issues with sound quality (using them all the time in the ULT 2 mode). I've discharged them completely down to 0% and the charging LED turned off when finished charging. So everything is working nicely and I have no regrets. I will keep them together with Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 because of great WH-1000XM4-like ANC. I always dreamed of ultra bass headphones but with superb ANC and I think the ULT Wear is the answer. Skullcandy will be the most immersive solution for gaming and VR because of that extra rumble.
@@ferry7613 ULTs are lighter and more comfortable. They also have a wearing detection sensor - Crushers must be turned off manually. ULTs also have a much better ANC. I still use Crushers though as they are better when gaming, watching movies or listening to certain types of music . ULTs may be overall a good general choice but if you want that extreme rumble, then Crushers might be your pick.
I just purchase the XB910N at Best Buy on sale for $149. I chose the XB910N because for me it looks aesthetically better and premium looking. Not really a fan of the tubular headband. I had a chance to test the ULT Wear, and the difference is marginal. The ULT button can be good and convenient for people. Other than that, I am happy with the quality of XB910N and maybe upgrade the next generation XM in the future. But, for those that can grab the XB910N at a good discount, it still hold on its own.

It is totally unacceptable that no wi-fi content vlogger does not notice that the Sony WH-1000XM5, even after the 5th generation of headphones, did not manage to solve the hearing problem on the telephony side. It sounds metallic and awful and the noise cancellation in this area is light years away from Bose. In vain, the people from sony are trying to lie that they have solved the problem of telephone audition. Is it really true that no vlogger in this world is correct in this matter? Maybe in the tenth generation of headphones sony will solve this problem as well. :)

I'd probably go for the ULT. For higher end features, I would get the XM4 instead of XM5.
I bought them yesterday, the bass is amazing, the whole headphones shake with deep tones, and at the same time there is no noticeable distortion.

I agree with you 100% they sound great but need more volume which can be done with a firm ware upgrade and if that was done these would really shine!
The XM5 has much better and cleaner sound. The ULT is too boosted and just doesn't have clarity and the ULT button is horrendously bad with adding Bass. It's just muddy and rattling and sounds like the headphones are broken.

does anyone know how to permantely fix the whitenoise during ANC in CH720N? Sony says it's normal but when it blow it with hair dryer it's disappered temporately
There's nothing you can do to fix it. I have the same headphones and it's sadly just a quirk of them. I used to have Xm3s and they didn't have the same issue so I suppose it's dependant on price.

@@8dsongs859 ive already had the XM3/XM4/XM5. 2 weeks ago bought the 720N tho, in my opinion for a budget headphone its really really great its worth it for the prize, but yeah staying with the XM5 for sure nothing really beats it in my opinion.

Could you test the XM5 for gaming. in regard to windows drivers and software and battery (wireless + mic) and possible wireless sound interference and noise reduction from the pc case fans and key clicks. maybe make a video about it. it would be really cool. cheers.
XB-910N is better for gaming because it has a lot more bass than XM5

I do not really understand why everybody forgot XM4, they sound much better from rest of this crap,and the 40 mm drivers are the most obvious reason why they sound better
I tried both XM4 and XM5, and the XM5 sounds much cleaner overall (while still fun), and has a more controlled, cleaner, better quality bass, rather than the "boom boom" of the XM4...
Even if you EQ the XM4, they just don't sound as clean overall as the XM5.
I also owned the XM2 and the XM3, and the XM5 is the best when it comes to the sound. I'm curious how the sound will be improved on the XM6, whenever they'll come.
I also thought that "40 mm should sound better than 30 mm, right?", but I was proven wrong. Size is not all that matters.

You lost some pounds, looks good, Aaron! I chose the xm4 over the xm5 due to the plethora of reports of broken hinges with the xm5 in the internet. Even my xm4 have a tad to much bass for me and start to hurt the top of my head after a short while of wearing them, so I usually grab my Bose qc45. The Ult are still interesting though, due to the good anc for way less money than the xm5 and I like the green color option though.

I don't have brake hinge and I can't understand how it brakes. I am not carefull. But again I don't throw my headphones.
I was also worried about the XM 5 hinges but really i think its totally avoidable by not holding the head phones up by one ear cup as that will make them swing around and that puts a lot of pressure on the hinge. Still a design flaw but not a fatal one, i just hold it by the head band or both ear cups.
These are similar in price to xm4, are these better?

The ULT sound more bassy and fun.
The XM4 have slightly nicer feeling build and are going for a more "accurate" sound, but don't sound as fun and bassy.

@@arress2052 First charge was strange. Even though they stayed connected through the night, the LED didn't went off and it should according to the manual. Then I had some crackling in the with some songs. Have to investigate. Maybe it's my Bluetooth setup but the WH-1000XM5 work fine with the same PC. I think they have less rumble than Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 but more pure sonic bass. Also the mids and highs are much more clearer. In Skullcandy they are more smoothed out. But I'm not an audio expert and it's just how I feel.
@@arress2052 So after a week of daily usage I had no problems with them. There were no issues with sound quality (using them all the time in the ULT 2 mode). I've discharged them completely down to 0% and the charging LED turned off when finished charging. So everything is working nicely and I have no regrets. I will keep them together with Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 because of great WH-1000XM4-like ANC. I always dreamed of ultra bass headphones but with superb ANC and I think the ULT Wear is the answer. Skullcandy will be the most immersive solution for gaming and VR because of that extra rumble.

@@ferry7613 ULTs are lighter and more comfortable. They also have a wearing detection sensor - Crushers must be turned off manually. ULTs also have a much better ANC. I still use Crushers though as they are better when gaming, watching movies or listening to certain types of music . ULTs may be overall a good general choice but if you want that extreme rumble, then Crushers might be your pick.

I just purchase the XB910N at Best Buy on sale for $149. I chose the XB910N because for me it looks aesthetically better and premium looking. Not really a fan of the tubular headband. I had a chance to test the ULT Wear, and the difference is marginal. The ULT button can be good and convenient for people. Other than that, I am happy with the quality of XB910N and maybe upgrade the next generation XM in the future. But, for those that can grab the XB910N at a good discount, it still hold on its own.

ULT sounds sooo much better, it's not even close. They're a successor of the 910n, better in every way.

How do you record the frequency response and sound demos? Do you use head and ears simulator like miniDSP EARS or do you use diy flate plate coupler?
It is totally unacceptable that no wi-fi content vlogger does not notice that the Sony WH-1000XM5, even after the 5th generation of headphones, did not manage to solve the hearing problem on the telephony side. It sounds metallic and awful and the noise cancellation in this area is light years away from Bose. In vain, the people from sony are trying to lie that they have solved the problem of telephone audition. Is it really true that no vlogger in this world is correct in this matter? Maybe in the tenth generation of headphones sony will solve this problem as well. :)
