What Is The Food Cost Living In Thailand?

  • I take you Grocery shopping with me at Big C Extra in Pattaya, Thailand to figure out my monthly grocery bill. This video will give you an idea about how much it'll cost you to eat for one month in Pattaya, Thailand if you only eat groceries and don't eat restaurant food for a month.
I eat healthily so shopping in Thailand compared to the US has been a pleasant surprise. The food I buy is 1/3 the cost of what I pay in the US. To live and eat healthy in the US is expensive. In Thailand, it is very affordable. So if you're planning a long stay or moving here, it's a great opportunity to make a lifestyle change and start eating healthy if you haven't already.
Pork and especially chicken are the best deal if you're a meat-eater. The beef is terrible unless it's imported from Australia and that of course is expensive. The fish in Thailand is ok but not great. Vietnam is a much better place to be a fish eater. I eat fish almost every day in the US but here in Thailand fish doesn't seem to be their specialty. Stick with Pork and Chicken, especially at restaurants. I've had good fish but it's been a rarity.
I think it's worth a person's time to learn how to cook Thai food so you can enjoy eating at home without relying on restaurants. Thai food is simple, delicious, and usually quick to prepare.

If you want a cheaper price than BigC. You have to go to Makro. It's a large wholesale mall. You can get very cheap prices if you buy large quantities. But if you want the freshest and cheapest, you have to go to the big fresh market in the morning. Because pork and chicken or meat will be very fresh. Unlike shopping malls that have to be transported through refrigerated trucks to the mall, it takes almost a day. But the meat market will come straight from the slaughterhouse. And the fruits and vegetables are fresher than the ones in the mall. Some in-store products may have been in the freezer for a few days. I think that if you buy a lot and often like this, it must be fresh market only. You'll save a lot of money.😁😁🙏🙏

One thing foreigners always tend to overlook when living in Latin America or Southeast Asia is that it is far more convenient and cheaper to just buy a reverse osmosis water treatment system. In Thailand you can buy these for $100 USD or $200 USD for a very nice model. For me, it's not the money savings by reducing what you spend on water that is appealing. It's eliminating the need to haul heavy liquids around every week just to drink water or make coffee.
You just hauled 60 liters of water around the store and into your condo...and you said that was only a 4 day supply. 36 liters / 4 days = 9 liters of water a day (for 2 people). This means in a year, you've had to buy & transport 3,285 liters of water from the store to your condo/house. 3,285 / 6 per pack x 51 THB = 27,923 THB per year. On Lazada, you can get a 5 stage reverse osmosis delivered to your condo with a tank for 2,667 TBH which is still less than 10% the cost you spend annually on buying and hauling water to your condo.
A liter of water weights 1 kilo or 2.2 lbs. So you are hauling 7,227 lbs of water every year instead of just buying the machine that does it for you.

Thank you for the good information, Max! I never considered any type of home filtration because I've never seen it in anybody's home in South East Asia or in Peru when I was there. I assumed the water was so contaminated that there was not a home filtration system available that would make the water safe to drink.
The number of water bottles I throwout/recycle every week is insane. Especially during the super hot months. Plus, I don't like drinking out of plastic.

@@JakeSnowLiveSimple Yes, it's more common than you may thing. A fellow blogger - chuck (I assume you know who he is) uses one in his house. You may have to change the pre-filter (the carbon filter) more frequently than you would in the States but that's a 10 minute task maybe 4 times a year. No big deal and not a big expense.

Good details on price of groceries in Big C Extra, Pattaya. Many other supermarkets cost more. Fruits are cheaper in outdoor markets, but not always available. Pork and chicken are probably safer in air-conditioned supermarkets. Outside, stick to well-cooked and watch out for cheap pork. Swine flu in pigs has been found and were supposed to be destroyed, no danger to humans except maybe humans with pig-heart transplant. Some expats claimed diaherra, due possibly to last night's burger. But, I got sick for 5 days after eating a 7-11 tuna sandwich lightly toasted after 10 minutes in the toaster.

@@tilapiadave3234 IMO when you first go to Pattaya you've got to get to know a few expats.
The expats are going to tell you where the best deals are for eating, where to get the best 99 baht breakfasts and other meal deals. Where to shop for groceries, clothes, etc. Where to rent a condo or motorcycle or car. Where the best entertainment is.
My first time in Pattaya I was lost till I had a few drinks with some Brits who were retired there.
The women told me always carry change for the baht bus and learn the routes. Carry change for the toilets because in some places they cost 10 baht. Carry toilet paper. Some women even carry soap for washing your hands after using the toilet. What food to keep in your hotel/condo when you don't want to go out to eat. Most 7/11 carry a wide range of American style food for every meal. Of course never drink the tap water or you might not be going out for a few days.

@@JakeSnowLiveSimple I'm Thai. Sometimes I like to buy at the supermarket. Sometimes I buy it at local market.
The price wasn't that much different. I prefer convenience. Don't have to pay much attention.

Ewwww!! I would never buy meat or all of my produce from BigC. The hygiene is not proper and sits out collecting dust particle and aircon dirt that they never clean 😷 I love how the snowflakes compare everything in Thailand to 50 states aka America. Are you really telling us we can’t find the same prices get real? The quality is not that great anyway.

      Hi Global Citizen,
I like Big C and their produce has always been good everytime I've been there. I'm not telling you what you can or can not do. I'm only sharing my personal grocery shopping experience and of course I compare it to my US grocery expense, because I have 30 years experience buying groceries there in multiple states. The comparison I chose to use was my Wyoming grocery expense, it's the least expensive of the states I spend time in.
What grocery store do you recommend? I'll go check it out.
If dust freaks your frog I think it's best to avoid all developing countries. Lol
      Thank you for watching.

People who are careful about hygiene,
They tend to die quickly because they have no immunity.

That's something my family would say. I grew up on a ranch and some times our food had a little more than just dust on it. Lol
