So New Austin is not available till the epilogue portion of the game and does not contribute to any portion of the game's story. Kind of a shame that they redeveloped this whole region beautifully and left it rather bare with Armadillo contaminated by cholera and Tumbleweed beginning to decline as a boomtown. I expect that they recreated New Austin for either its use in Red Dead Online, its use in a single player DLC or because its not a Red Dead game without Twin Rocks... or because Rockstar really wanted the character of Herbert Moon to return.
i imagine in the online it will be the go to place for most players

@@markmichalek8623 From what I've seen, yes. I haven't actually played the game yet. I am gonna start playing it this Friday when I finally get a chance, but I spoiled the entire game for myself already and briefly looked at each mission on RUclips already. Several of the epilogue missions with John Marston take place in the new map and I've seen a lot of folks doing stranger missions as John in that territory too, so yeah you can explore the whole map still.

It's because most of the population of Tumbleweed moved to Armadillo between RDR 2 and RDR 1. Marshal Johnson explained how the railway being right next to Armadillo attracted people.

I’ve played RDR2 for about 15 hours now and I was kind of disappointed because I thought that it doesn’t include classic desert areas. I am so happy right now! Seems like I was wrong thankfully

If you didn’t know, you can only go to the old map once you’ve completed the story mode.
It has a slow start. But it gets insanely good.
You have to get quite far in order to actually go to the old map and stuff

I actually stopped playing the story mode and only did multiplayer stuff in RDR undead nightmare after John just stood there and watched Herbert Die. I was like, wtf this guy is hilarious I totally would save his life but the game didn't even let me.

Best game of all time hands down. Its like a sad, action packed movie that you get to make choices in. I never thought id like a character as much as Marston, but i LOVE Morgan. Bravo rockstar! Well worth the wait!

It’s so funny how people have just up and turned on John after playing this game. Yeah John was a bit of a dead beat. But this story shed a lot of light on his development as a character and i appreciated Him that much more for trying to get his life together. As for playing as John at the end. I kinda had my suspicions, even much more so after Arthur got sick. Arthur was dope but ending the story and continuing as John felt right.
Watching Arthur get sick was cringy. I wish he wasn't sick for this long.

Corn Flakes there’s TONS of unused map that you can’t get to because the game either makes you fall down a cliff trying to, or makes you drown trying to cross the river to Mexico. They really could’ve done something and made an ENORMOUS map if they put more time into it. Overall tho, the game is pretty amazing ig. It’s just so weird to me seeing all that land yet you can’t get to it cuz rockstar didn’t intend for players to go that far. Just kinda kills the whole “you can go anywhere” vibe you get from an open world

@@blue_flag7601 I guess they probably wont include Mexico in single player because of storyline reasons, since now we are playing as John, and he wont go to Mexico until the events of RDR1, but they could of let us play as Arthur, there's no story impediment there! We spent 8 years playing as John Marston in that map, I have not much interest in doing that again. On the other hand, exploring the old map with Arthur would be amazing.
Maybe Mexico will be available in MP, or they just modeled it so we could se something from the other side of the river.

that was mentioned in rdr1 when john rode out to tumbleweed the sherrif mentioned that when the train came through they made it go clear past tumbleweed and the residents left it to head towards areas that were closer to the train leaving it a ghost town where the waltons took up residence

The thing I have always found crazy about RDR2 is how you don't even get to see HALF OF THE MAP for the entirety of the main story. Imagine playing a game for 50+ HOURS, and then you're subtly reminded there's an entire other half to the map. Like-hey, by the way.
And when you FINALLY see it for the first time?
It's fucking incredible.
One of the most beautiful areas I've ever seen in any game. The desert is absolutely gigantic and immensely beautiful and it's SO underplayed-it almost feels like an afterthought. An easter egg.
You don't even get to see it for nearly the ENTIRE game. This gigantic, sprawling, absolutely gorgeous landscape that's HALF of Red Dead Redemption 2's entire land mass... an afterthought?! An easter egg?? The desert alone would be lauded as one of the most beautiful open-world spaces in the history of gaming... and it just comes off like cut content. It gives you serious "bonus level" vibes except it's like double the game's original area. It's insane. Just crazy.

You'll find it about as likely that they will remake GTA San Andreas with GTA 5 graphics and mechanics.
That's a massive undertaking, and I really doubt that anyone want to spend that many resources and money on making that. It would be a huge net loss.

I'm not complaining, but isn't this whole thing a bit of a continuity error? In RDR 1, the implication was that John had never been to New Austin. He seemed unfamiliar with the area, which is further reinforced by the fact that he has to buy maps. When Bonnie was kidnapped and Bill's goon said to meet them in Tumbleweed, John didn't know where it was and had to ask Marshal Johnson about it.

There's way too much detail to simply write off as non-canon. The side mission with the sheriff in Armadillo essentially explains how and why Marshal Johnson was there in RDR1. I don't think Rockstar added New Austin simply for fun and what's shown and experienced isn't supposed to matter. Maybe the plan was originally for Arthur to be able to travel to New Austin, then it changed later in development for whatever reason. Rockstar's been known to do things like that in the past.

It's funny because RDR1 after when John died and Jack replaced him everyone I spoke to hated Jack and wanted to be John.

I have to say, it’s pretty cool to see tumbleweed, and at that inhabited. There’s one thing I don’t understand, though. I would assume the game ends in 1906, which is the year that John left the gang. Considering the five-year gap between then and when red dead redemption 1 starts, what could’ve caused tumbleweed to become abandoned, and how did it fall into the state of decay we see it in during the first game so quickly?
Actually it's 1908. I know it's a little confusing but John left the gang and then along with Abigail and Jack just moved from place to place for two years, usually because John would lose his temper and presumably end up injuring or killing someone. Anyway, Marshal Johnson explained in RDR 1 that Tumbleweed was a popular town until the rail line came through right next to Armadillo, resulting in the residents of Tumbleweed packing up and moving.

Tumbleweed was a more important location, and that changed when the railroad from Blackwater got built in Armadillo, fully diminishing Tumbleweed's importance, making it a ghost town and making bandits and outlaws go there.

Arthur 😭 he turned out to be a good character, but at least it ends on a happy note with John getting to be with his family for a while. I really hope since they already have the map they just do a full remake for RDR 1, that'd be really amazing

Okay so I'm going to try this on as much videos for rdr 2 as possible for the sake of the game only being out a few days, those who are going to use SPOILERS that are story related please try to make it read more, nearly every video I click on has something to do with a SPOILER in the comments and whilst it may be considered people's fault for looking, some people just like reading what people say related to the video they're watching and clearly spoil the game in the process. Luckily for me I've already finished the game and didn't run into these problems myself but for the sake of making this game an experience for each person I thought I'd leave this comment. Feel free to copy this comment and plaster on as many rdr 2 videos to try and subdue the amount of spoilers going around, it may not end it all but it's worth a try, have a good day 👌

Fascinating to see how they've handled the RDR map in this game though. It's both familiar, yet different. Seeing Armadillo as a cholera-ridden ghost town before the train station was built.
Overall though, this amount of work gone into the map suggests Rockstar have to at least be considering adding the RDR1 story as DLC. Swap out a couple of buildings for the 1911 versions, add in Mexico, then just insert all the story assets from the first game they already have. Much of the work has been done. In fact I think the only reason they didn't put in Mexico (yet) is that it would have tipped their hand that it was definitely coming.
And it's not definitely coming, it's just... well, it'd be damn nice to have, would make them money, and they've effectively done 90% of the work. PC players never got the first game, so for them it's more than just a shiny remaster of an old favourite, it'd be a chance to actually play the whole story for the first time. The extensive epilogue with John in RDR2 really only makes sense if you consider it as a setup to a replay of RDR in this game engine too.
Funny thing is, you can see El Presidio (Mexican Army Fort where Javier is located in RDR1) from the riverside shack in Hennigan's Stead, as well as another boat dock across the river. It's definitely a possible DLC location considering that alone.
Even then, however, it's only a possibility. A very SLIM possibility.
What about Blackwater? Blackwater was part of Red Dead Redemption too. I’m pretty sure the only reason some people play as John Marston is to explore Blackwater and New Austin.
I love riding into armadillo on that mountain path where you can see it in the distance.

I'd love to see a remastered version for the original RDR, something similar to what they did with LA Noire. A remake might be stretching it, but you never know.

This game has hundreds upon hundreds of doors that you can interact with, but never open. You can dynamite it, shoot it, run into it, nothing works. But you can see an interior, and the door is clearly functional. But that lack of access to 98% Of what Ive encountered so far, pisses me off.

the old map was put into place for RDR Online mostly word is that in the game files there is a few areas the players can purchase here as well as various other activities and online mission givers.

Mary-Beth and Arthur would have been a much better match. She consoles him and they really hit it off. I think it would have been great if they had left the gang at the end and moved out to Tumbleweed. She gets pregnant, the sickness takes him, and then RDR3 could have Jack Marston and Arthur Jr meet up and start a gang together further West with a map that includes the original RDR1 lands, California and an early days Vegas-type place (like how Saint Denis is New Orleans). They could be the last outlaw gang of the West, play both sides against each other in the Mexican-American Border War (the real life version lasted from 1910-1919), and have them raise hell at the founding of Vegas. Los Angeles was still very young as well, and you could even have a second major city to stand in for San Francisco.
My other idea was that RDR3 could be called Red Dead: Origins and follow the life of Hosea. He was born sometime around 1835-1840, so it could show his family pushed out of Texas while he was very young during the Texas Revolution, only to settle in the mountains of California (remember in RDR2 he says he was practically raised in the mountains). Then follow him as he travels back East, eventually culminating in meeting Dutch and Arthur and starting the Van Der Linde gang. You could even have Hosea as a civil war vet or an abolitionist that fought the Westward expanse of slavery a la John Brown. Show how he meets Bessie and all that. Include the great gunslingers like Red Harlowe, Landon Ricketts, Mr Kelley, etc. Maybe even meeting/seeing a young Nigel West Dickens in the port of San Francisco peddling and hustling to build his fortune or an appearance by Javier Diego as a Mexican junior officer in the war.

Is there any content in New Austin? Like stranger missions or something? I went through it and it seemed empty.

It sucks that there is no random events in the old map, in rdr1 there were that one hooker with bandits that would ask you to stop and help and other events, i wish they wouldve had put more in rdr2
Just curious when Arthur dies and you become John do you get like you money that you had on Arthur and skills? Or dou have to restart?

I think R* is going to launch a remastered RDR1 at some point. There was literally no other logical reason for them to sink the time into RDR1’s map recreation for a game that barely utilizes it in the main storyline.
Everyone here is disappointed that New Austin is empty but I kinda like it like that. It’s one of the reasons the gang liked the west so much. Because there ain’t much civilization.
