    Important takeaway: the strongest card in this video wasn't on the ban list. Force of Negation is extremely powerful.

    • @couchpotatoe91
      @couchpotatoe91 Год назад +7

      Before that card was available in eternal formats, Force of Will was often times referred to as "the glue that holds the format together" because it at prevents turn 1 all-in decks from dominating while allowing blue decks to not just fold to a chalice on 1 on the first turn.

    For the next no-banlist modern, can you make a Yawgmoth Pod deck with Deathrite Shaman? I feel as though the deck could be an acceptable power level for modern. It's fun to showcase the most broken decks in no-banlist, but I think it would be helpful to also show cards that could be candidates for being unbanned.

I still feel like some UR tempo list with only 4 DRC, 4 ironclad iconoclast and 2 brazen borrower as creatures and the rest urza's baubles, ponder, preordain and treasure cruise and dig through time with only bolts, mental misstep, pact of negation and subtlety with 14 lands (8 blue fetches, 4 steam vents, 2 islands) would be an insane deck ready to take on this crazy metagame.

      AFAIK it's considered one of the best deck in the format. It turns out being able to just slam a threat on turn 1 then make your opponent play regular Magic while you durdle around with free counterspells and cantrips is really good. G/B Depths, Oko 8-Cast, and U/R/x Tempo are probably the top 3.

      I don't think they are manually disabled, they just don't show up if the automatic captions can't pick up any meaningful subtitles. The audio quality is a bit messy in some places so that's probably why it didn't register the captions. Still a really unfortunate situation, though.

    I really like these videos. The better way to present it I'm not too sure. I think when there are two videos from each players POV there is more insight into plays etc. With both players in the video like this one there is less insight into plays because each player doesnt want to give too much away to the opponent, but there is the back and forth banter which is good. Tough to say but I think I slightly prefer the two individual videos just based on more commentary on plays, and there being more content. But i would like to imagine that both methods of presenting these grudge matches could exist because they are both high value.

    I feel like having you on the call together is not great because you can't really talk about your hand or your plans without them hearing as well. Even if there's nothing really at stake you can't say like ok I'm going to pass and leave up x and if not I'll do y at end of turn and so on. Also if you are going for this style then having their hand visible on the screen as well would be great.

    I feel like Reid overrated the power of the format pretty significantly when making some of those mulligans. Mulligan at 24:11 seemed particularly wild. While it wasn't the absolute nuts, I don't think you can throw back the full combo on the play. It had everything required to win, plus a bit of redundancy and disruption for an X/1. Even if you could pick your perfect 6, it would only be one or two cards different.

      The UG list Gab played is a few cards off of the list LSV played, both to easy 2-0 wins. LSV took my list which I took to the finals of the kanister nblm tournament and made a few changes. Gab literally just took my updated list. It is one of the best decks in the format, probably tied with the depths deck at #1. Reid’s build is just too clunky. Ledger shredder is great, Urza is not.

    • @JohnFromAccounting
      @JohnFromAccounting Год назад

      I think a Sultai midrange deck with DRS and Oko might be a strong candidate because it has good matchups against Dark Depths and artifacts. You get to play cards like Once Upon a Time, Green Sun's Zenith and Ponder. A trusty Tarmogoyf is strong enough for legacy, and he's strong enough for NBL modern.

    • @adam_jri
      @adam_jri Год назад

      @@JohnFromAccounting unfortunately not. The dynamics of nbl are different from legacy. Without wasteland, vanilla creatures can’t compete with urza’s saga. That’s why eldrazi which dominated nblm before is now just meh. Oko is very good, but midrange in general can’t fight through everything.

      Nah I think it shows exactly what force was designed for. People playing degenerate combos trying to win on turn on get blown out by force. It keeps the format honest. And unlike force of will it can't protect sorcery speed combos so it is almost always just to stop people from winning. Force makes the format more interactive which makes it healthy to have in the format. Nobody wants to play their whole combo and get it forced on turn one, but nobody wants to sit down for a game of magic and lose the game before playing a single land either.

    I feel like the real thing this video showed is that Reid's deck choice was extremely suspect here. 8-cast was a good pick into a bad matchup, but belcher and reanimator are both just really bad decks that don't get improved much in no ban list. They're both decks that go incredibly fast with a good hand, but they're not very likely to actually *get* a good hand, and they fold to basically any removal. Never mind complaining about the force of negation countering his big plays, even if everything had resolved, he only even put a combo on the stack twice in four games, one was Empty the Warrens for 8 goblins, the other was Through the Breach Atraxa on turn 7. Even when these decks "do the thing" it's almost always wildly underwhelming.
