watching Shara Bullet and Umar last night made me feel that Taekwondo is actually valid in MMA as a striking base, mix in some limb work, and wrestling, you're good to go. Shara at 185 jumping around like that was quite impressive to watch.
Merab needs to listen to what Umar has to say about how to fight O' Malley. The fight between Umar and Merab would be cool. Who has the better cardio? We'll come to know.
I felt like both fighters were quite tentative. Umar could have had more success if he was lulled by Cory's constant lateral movement and distance control. He shouldve walked forward more and trusted his striking more. He had a lot of success with his 2s. Also in the grappling, he focussed too much on back control, allowing Cory to escape using the same technique everytime. He should have done what he did later in the rounds, by focussing on getting on top and disallowing Cory from sitting up/controlling the legs. Cory could have engaged more often. He was too respectful of Umar's wrestling, and played at distance for majority of the fight. He found the most success when he had Umar on his back foot. Cory's only PTV was to scramble through the grappling exchanges and force the action. A rivetting and enjoyable tactical chess match. Umar beats O'malley. A fight with merab would be very interesting.
